Chapter Nine
"So, let me get this straight-" Thomas said.
"Unlike us." Morality said, sporting a huge grin.
Logic sighed in annoyance.
"Er- yes. Anyways, as I was saying..." Thomas said. "So, basically, my personality is dating, and I'm still single."
"Yeah. You need to up your game." I said.
"Anxiety, you're the reason I'm still single!" Thomas said.
I smirked. "Hey, it means I do my job well."
Thomas sighed.
"Don't you think you could let Thomas talk to someone without getting nervous?" Prince asked. "Just once?"
"Prince, I can't just not do my job." I said. "It doesn't work that way."
Before anyone else could say something, Thomas intervened. "So how does that work? Anxiety, Logic, you guys are pretty much the complete opposite of romance, and yet you both have boyfriends. How does that work?"
"Well, actually, Anxiety and I just discussed this recently. Sometimes, anxiety and logic aren't completely controversial to romance. Sometimes, they can be a part of it." Logic said.
"So being in a relationship isn't totally out of character for me," I said.
I noticed Prince's small smile at that.
The ding of a text tone could be heard in the room, and we all looked at Thomas.
Thomas checked his phone and read the text.
"What is it?" Morality asked.
"Joan invited me to... a party." Thomas said.
"Great, this is where I come in." I said. I looked at Thomas, and spoke with finality. "You're not going."
"Don't you think it'll be good for Thomas to get out and meet some new people?" Prince said.
"No." I said. "That's exactly why I'm here. To make sure that doesn't happen. Just think of all the ways it could go wrong."
"But think of the ways it could be a great opportunity for Thomas." Prince said. "If you let yourself get caught up in the negatives, you'll miss the positives. You'll never know what good outcomes you're missing out on if you don't take this opportunity."
"So you think I should go?" Thomas asked.
"No." I said.
"Yes!" Prince and Morality said.
"This might be a good opportunity for you to further strengthen your friendship with Joan." Logic said.
I sighed. "As usual, I'm outnumbered."
Thomas replied to Joan, saying he would go.
"Fine, I'll just be there the whole night, making you wish you were at home watching Netflix. Just saying." I said.
"You are good at that." Thomas admitted. "Or maybe Netflix is just tempting."
"Let's go with both," I said.
"You can watch Netflix another night." Prince said.
"And stay up until 5 am rewatching Parks and Recreation!" Morality grinned.
"Or Thomas could get some much-needed sleep." Logic said.
"Nah," Thomas shrugged.
"You need to maintain a healthy sleep scedu-" Logic's rant was cut off, and thank goodness it was. Logic probably would've gone off for hours.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. That's a problem for another time. Thomas has a party to prepare for." Prince said.
"The party isn't until tonight. I still have hours." Thomas said.
"Watch Parks and Rec!" Morality said.
"That I can do." Thomas said.
I figured I wasn't needed, and I left the scene.
~~~
Thomas took a deep breath, and rung the doorbell.
Joan let Thomas in, and greeted their friend with the usual small talk. You know, the boring "hey, how are you?" kind of thing that people only say to be nice.
Of course, I was watching the scene from Thomas's point of view, waiting for the moment to sink in. Thomas didn't get anxiety with Joan. Thomas was too comfortable with Joan. There were other people there, of course, but Thomas wasn't focusing on them. Thomas had to focus on the strangers.
Honestly, I was confident in my ability to do my job. Parties were easy, and I'm good at what I do. I've been giving Thomas anxiety ever since Thomas's awkward teenage years.
The time came when the casual conversation between Thomas and Joan died, and one of Joan's friends approached them. Joan started talking to their friend, and Thomas was left on his own. I mean, I'm sure Joan didn't do it on purpose, but they just gave me the perfect opportunity to strike.
I let the anxiety sink in as an emotion first, a sense of being uncomfortable as Thomas noticed someone looking at him.
"They're looking at you. They don't know you, so why would they look at you if not to judge you? You probably look really awkward compared to the rest of the crowd." I said. It wasn't my best, but it was a start. "These people all around you? They're all people with normal lives who would probably think that staying up until five am watching Parks and Recreation is weird. Heck, it is weird. Get some sleep, Thomas."
"Thomas's life is better than normal, though." A voice said from behind me, and I instantly recognized it to belong to none other than Prince. "Think of how many viewers he has! These people could only dream of being as famous as Thomas is."
I turned around. "Prince, what're you doing?"
"Look, I know giving Thomas anxiety is your job, but I have a job as well, and that's giving Thomas confidence." Prince said.
I sighed. "Great. So you're just going to argue with me?"
"Tempting, but maybe I don't have to." Prince said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Remember when Logic tried to control Thomas-"
"I remember that you helped as well." I said.
"It was mostly Logic." Prince said. "Anyways, Thomas was unhappy, and when Logic realized that, he turned to Morality for help."
"Your point?" I asked.
"Morality is the only one who can counteract Logic. He's Logic's opposite, and therefore was the only one who could help undo what Logic had tried to change. Morality and Logic realized then that they can't have their way completely. They need the other. When Logic tried to take full control of Thomas, it backfired. Thomas benefits from a healthy balance between Logic and Morality." Prince said. "Don't you think we could be the same way?"
I hesitated. "That sounded really... intelligent of you, Prince." I said. "It's uncharacteristic."
"Are you saying I can't be smart sometimes?" Prince scoffed. "Rude."
"So what do you propose?" I asked.
"Can't we find a balance? Thomas won't benefit from too much anxiety, but I guess..." Prince hesitated. "I guess too much confidence isn't a good thing, either." Prince mumbled the last bit.
"Alright." I said.
"So... I say Thomas talks to that girl over there." Prince said. "She's not talking to anyone at the moment, and she seems nice."
"If Thomas talks to her, he could slip up and make himself look bad." I said.
"Or he could meet a new friend and have a great time." Prince said. "It's good to take risks sometimes."
"But if it ends badly, Thomas will regret it." I said.
"But if it ends well, he'll be glad it happened." Prince said. "C'mon, Anx, just this once?"
"On one condition," I said.
"What is it?" Prince asked.
"Don't ever call me Anx again." I said.
Prince smiled. "Alright."
Thomas walked up to the girl and introduced himself.
"Relax. You're less likely to trip over your words if you treat it like no big deal." Prince told Thomas.
"Ha, good luck with that." I said.
Prince ignored me.
The conversation played out. The girl introduced herself as Taylor.
Taylor and Thomas talked casually.
"See, Anxiety? He's doing great." Prince said.
"Don't jinx it, P." I said. "Thomas could still make a huge fool out of himself."
"But if he did, would it really be that big of a deal?" Prince said. "Or would Thomas just think it was worse than it actually was?"
"Are you talking about cognitive distortions?" I asked.
"Cogni- what?" Prince asked.
"Eh- nevermind. It's something Logic and I talked about once... There was a whole debate and everything." I said.
"So you lost a debate and I didn't get to see it?" Prince said. "Aww, man."
"Why would you assume I lost?" I said. "Excuse you."
"So... you won?" Prince asked.
"No. I lost." I said. "But in my defense, I wasn't even trying. For one of my arguments, I hissed at him."
Prince smiled. "Solid argument."
"Hey, sarcasm is my thing." I said in a fake offended tone.
"Too bad." Prince said. "So when did you have a debate with Logic?"
"The day of Thomas's audition." I said.
"Oh, so that's why I wasn't there." Prince said. "I still remember that. Morality gave me soup that upset my stomach, which made me feel worse than I already was. That was not fun."
"This is why Morality needs Logic to keep him in line." I said.
"Exactly." Prince smiled. "Just like I keep you in line."
I scoffed. "Excuse you, but I believe it's the other way around."
"Prove it." Prince smirked.
"You tend to go overboard with your crazy ideas. You need someone to instill a sense of reality in you sometimes." I said.
"Name one of my crazy ideas." Prince said.
"Having a rap battle with Logic." I smirked. "He totally owned you. It was the best thing I've ever seen."
"Oh, like how you lost a debate to him?" Prince said.
"Touche." I smirked.
That's when Thomas stopped talking to the girl, and Prince and I noticed at the same time.
"We got distracted." Prince said.
"We completely forgot about Thomas." I said.
"Well, good thing he can manage himself." Prince said.
"I can't believe I let myself get distracted." I muttered.
"I am pretty distracting," Prince smirked.
"It's not always a good thing to draw attention to yourself." I said.
Prince ignored me. "Anyways, Thomas did pretty well on his own, don't you think? He had a whole conversation with a stranger."
"And he didn't do anything stupid, because you weren't influencing him either." I said.
Prince chose not to take offense to that. "You know, we might not have been paying attention that one time, but... you have to admit, we can actually work together if we're trying to. We don't have to bicker all the time."
"I guess," I said.
Prince smiled and lightly held my fingers in the clasp of his hand. "We are a good team."
I hope you guys liked that chapter! Also, if you recognized the show that I just referenced, comment the name of the show and I will love you forever.
I'll give you a hint: this show was referenced twice in Thomas's videos, once in "Impovable But Not Impossible", and another in "Growing Up". I died both times, because I'm a huge fan of Thomas, and a huge fan of this show.
Anyways, this chapter wasn't my personal best. It seemed kind of thrown together, especially the end. I just had to throw in the reference. I saw an opportunity and I took it. Prinxiety reminds me so much of my OTP from that show, and so if I have an opportunity to correlate the two, I will. I was originally planning on quoting Solangelo in this fanfic, using the "I apologize for my boyfriend" line set for Prinxiety, but I forgot to include it and now it wouldn't work for the timeline. For my readers that aren't familiar with Solangelo, the line set is as follows,
"I apologize for my boyfriend."
"Could you not...?"
"What would you prefer, then? Special guy? Significant other?"
"Significant annoyance, in your case."
"Oh, I'll get you for that."
Just imagine that as Prinxiety.
Anyways, thanks for reading my fanfic! Take it easy, guys, gals, and non-binary pals! (totally copying Thomas's outro... but it's for the sake of the reference)
Peace out!
