One Shot #9

Baby Mischief Masters Missing Bir

"What happened, Annie? Why is Ayaan walking like that? And what happened to Arman? Why is he clinging to you?" asked Khushi, with confusion as she saw Annie descending the staircase with her two-year-old twins, Arman in her arms, Ayaan walking ahead of her, with his tiny arms crossed over his tiny chest.

Anaisha didn't answer and quietly took her seat beside her father, with Arman still in her arms. She looked down at Ayaan, who still was standing with crossed arms, and said wearily, "Do you want me to help you, Ayaan? Or you'll managed that as well?"

But Ayaan didn't say anything in answer, and rather he moved toward his uncle Aarav, and tugging his trouser, said, "Aalav Mamu eelp me sit please (Aarav Mamu, help me sit please)."

Aarav looked down and smilingly said, "Sure Ayaan, come here." He picked Ayaan up and made him sit in his high chair.

Anaisha sighed, and looking at Ayaan, said, "Baby, what do you want to eat?"

"Ayaan not talking to Annie," Ayaan said without looking at his mother, apparently miffed with her over something.

Anaisha's family looked amusedly at him and Khushi again asked her daughter, "What happened, Annie? Why Ayaan's not talking to you? And what happened to Arman?"

"Ayaan's angry with me and Arman's upset," Annie said, "I didn't let their father talk to them, so now they are behaving like this."

"But why did you not let them talk to Kabir?" Arnav asked with confounded tone.

"Haan, Annie, kya hua (yes Annie, what happened)?" asked Zaina, who was making her nephew, Shivin eat his mashed bananas.

Annie took a deep breath and started narrating the reason for her kids' behaviour.
"They wanted to talk to Kabir, so I called him. But as he's in London and I called him at 8, which must be half past two there, I think two hours after he checked in his hotel suite and probably was sleeping. He didn't attend the call and it went unanswered. So both Arman and Ayaan were upset. Ten minutes later, he called back but he sounded very tired and sleepy certainly because of the long flight. And my twins, well Ayaan didn't talk to him and Arman started crying as he was missing Kabir, still is. I ended the call because I mean c'mon what was the use of keeping him off his sleep when neither of the boys were talking to him. And this infuriated Ayaan as I didn't let his Dada pacify him and abruptly ended the call. And Arman's sulking and crying because he's missing Kabir. And I don't know what to do. Next time, whenever he has to go for any medical conferences, I'll send these two with him and would come here to stay with you all."

Anaisha looked down as she finished speaking. Kabir had gone to attend a medical conference in London, and she along with her kids, came to stay with her parents for some days. But her joy vanished as her twins were troubling her like anything.
She was exhausted as hell as the kids stayed awake till four in morning and she was having severe backache. Being sleep deprived and tired with her kids' behaviour, she looked as if she was about to cry. Being a mother is honestly a tiring job, but being a twins' mother is even more exhausting and Anaisha was really drained of all her energy.

Arnav passed her a sympathetic smile and said soothingly, "Don't be upset princess, try make them eat some food and put them to sleep. After that you take rest as well."

"Yeah that's what I'm thinking to do," said Anaisha in a weary voice with red baggy eyes.

"And if you want, I'll give you a mild painkiller, which will ease your pain and won't have much chemical effects since you still breastfeed the boys," Leher said while pouring juice in a small plastic baby sipper for her seven-month-daughter, Alisha.

Anaisha nodded and mumbled, "Okay."

She then turned to her younger son, Ayaan, who was sitting across her, and in a very sweet voice, said, "Baby, what do you want to eat? Bananas? Oranges? Toasted bread? Or baby formula?"

But Ayaan didn't respond to her, instead, he turned to his grandmother, who was sitting next to him, and said, "Nani, Ayaan want toast." He pointed toward the stack of toasted breads which was kept on the middle of the table.

Khushi looked at Anaisha with a small smile and turning back to Ayaan, replied to him, "Yeah, sure, Ayaan. Let me cut it into small pieces for you." She picked up a toast, buttered it and then cut it into small pieces so that Ayaan could eat it with ease with the 16-18 teeth that he had.

She passed it to him and Suhana got him his chocolate milk in his milk bottle and passed one to Anaisha, for Arman, who had rested his head on his mother's shoulder, still in tears but his face was hidden because of his mother's wavy brownish black hair which were no less than a bird's nest at the moment.

"Arman baby, c'mon now have something. Arman? Baby look at mumma please," Anaisha said softly. But Arman, instead, clutched her even tighter, refusing to do what his mother said.

Sighingly, she turned to Aarush, who was sitting next to her and mumbled quietly, "Check whether Arman's crying or sleeping."

Aarush nodded and craned his neck a little to see if Arman was crying or not. He felt kinda sad seeing his little nephew with puffy eyes which were still glistening with tears.

"Still crying, Annie," Aarush informed her.

Anaisha felt like crying again as her one baby wasn't ready to talk to her and other was crying but wasn't ready to face her. Her father saw that and he squeezed her free hand as her other hand was wrapped around Arman's tiny body.

She cryingly looked at her father and her father wiped the lone tear which escaped her eye. Arnav patted her hand and blinked his eyes, giving her assurance that it'll be fine. Anaisha shook her head slightly and turned to Arman, who was still hiding his face in her nape.

Holding his little body with both of her hands, she tried to make him sit down, but Arman's hold was tight and he was stubbornly holding her. It took her a good five minutes struggle to finally make Arman sit in front of herself on the dining table and her heart broke seeing his eyes completely red and puffed up, and his chubby cheeks all stained with tears.

"C'mon, baby, don't cry now. Dada's gonna be back day in three days. Please stop crying Arman and c'mon now have some food. See," she said, indicating toward Ayaan, who was having his toast and milk with a grumpy face as he saw his mother looking at him and she added, "even Ayaan's having his food. You also have it now, baby. What do you want?"

"Dada," Arman cryingly said.

Anaisha grimaced as this was the tenth time Arman had said that and from the corner of her eyes, she saw Ayaan agreeingly shaking his head. Taking deep breaths to calm herself, she cupped Arman's face and said calmly, "Baby, I told you na, Dada's gonna be back in three days. You don't wanna stay hungry till then, do you? So c'mon, have this banana and toast."

She peeled a banana and passed it to Arman, who was reluctant to take it but seeing his mom in a serious mood and her angry glare, he took it and started having it. As Anaisha hadn't eaten anything as well, he made her have a bite of it while Anaisha's family awed at it and Ayaan frowned, though he couldn't maintain that look for long as he knew his mom was really tired and drained and she needed energy.

Somehow the kids and Anaisha finished their breakfasts and felt really sleepy. Annie then helped Arman to stand on the floor but he raised his hands up, asking her to take him in her arms, which she did, even though her back literally wasn't supporting her.

She then asked Ayaan if he needed her help, but he already had asked his uncle Aarav to put him down and without waiting for his mom, he started walking back to his mom's room. Anaisha shook her head and followed him, wondering if she was like this as a child, because if she was then she felt really sorry for her parents as she had realised how hard it is to have a grumpy little toddler.

They entered Anaisha old bedroom and Ayaan climbed on the bed, ready to take his nap as he was really very sleepy after having his breakfast. Anaisha made Arman lie down, next to Ayaan and stroked Ayaan's hair, who looked at his mom with a soft expression this time.

He held her hand in his baby hand and said quietly, "Ayaan sholly (sorry). Ayaan not angry with mom." Though Ayaan's anger was supposed to last long, but since he had seen how unwell and disturbed his mother was, he decided to let go of his anger and make it up with his mother.

Anaisha smiled with motherly love and kissing his forehead, said, "It's okay, baby. Chalo ab you both sleep. You had only five hours of sleep this morning."

Her sons nodded and hugging their mother, both of them fell asleep, tired with all the crying and full with food. She lied straight on her back with her sons on either sides of her, though her back was hurting like hell in that position.

Some time later, when she was sure her sons were in deep slumber, she carefully got up and made them lie properly and kept pillows and teddy bears around them so that they didn't fall off the bed while sleeping or after waking up.

Just then her sister-in-law, Leher walked inside the room with a glass of water and a strip of medicine for Annie's backache. Leher kept it on the coffee table and sat quietly on the bed, while Annie smoothed the creases on her purple kurta.

She then sat beside Leher and looking at her twins, who looked peaceful while sleeping, said, "It's so hard to be a mother, Bhabhi. And being a mother of twins is even harder. I'm not complaining, but at times it gets really exhausting and annoying. And then my sons, they are just as stubborn as me. When Kabir's home, they won't mind even if he don't play with them and do his work, rather. But now when he's away, they are missing him like this. I don't know how I'll manage them once they wake up again. It's so irritating, that even after I be with the kids 24/7, I'm unable to handle them. And this stupid backache."

Leher squeezed Anaisha shoulder as Anaisha frowned grimly, unable to bear her backache. She passed Anaisha water and medicine and Annie gulped it down her throat at once. Leher stayed quiet for some minutes, as she wanted to Anaisha to calm down first.

When Anaisha was calmer, Leher stroked her hand and in a very soothing tone, said, "I know it's crazy, Annie and at times even I get irritated being a mother. There are times when I feel helpless while parenting Kanan and Alisha. But I've realised that though being a mother is not the easiest job in this world yet it's the most satisfying and heartwarming work and the warm feeling that oozes out of you when you are with your baby, it worths all the struggle. And I understand you completely but please don't be upset, you're an amazing mother. Not all the mother quit their jobs for their babies. And it's just a matter of mere 2-3 days, Kabir will be back by then. And don't worry about the kids missing Kabir. Kanan is 6, yet whenever Aarav's away for work, Kanan always a throw a fit which makes Aarav come running back as fast as he could. So calm down and relax. Take rest and you also sleep for some time, okay?"

"Yeah sure, Bhabhi. And thank you," Anaisha said softly. After Kabir and Anaisha's twin Aarush, it was probably Leher who could convince or handle Anaisha in her most vulnerable states.

"You're welcome, Chhoti. Now take rest," Leher said and walked out of the room.

Anaisha kept the empty glass of water on the coffee table and went to lie beside her kids. As she was quite sleepy and with effect of the painkiller, she fell asleep in just some minutes and only woke up three hours later, around 2 in afternoon, due to the buzzing of her phone.

Sleepily she got up and saw that her sons had also woken up because of the ringing sound of her phone. Her phone was kept on the side table of her bed and she picked it up. A smile spread on her face as she saw the name of the caller and she winked at her sons, who too understood that who's call it was.

Keeping it on loudspeaker, in a lazy voice, she said, "Hey, Bir! How are you now and how's the medical conference going?"

Her husband, Kabir smiled on the other side of the call and said, "Hey, wifey. I'm good and the medical conference is gonna start in an hour's time. But anyway I haven't called you to talk about the medical conference. Where are my kids? Are they still upset? You know it's so hard to stay away from you three. And yeah how's your backache? Took any meds? How are the boys doing now? What are they doing now? ... why aren't you answering?"

If Anaisha and the kids were missing Kabir, then he was no less missing them. Infact he was missing them much more than they were missing him. Which in its own sense was weird and surprising at the same time as the sort of man Kabir was earlier, who didn't even like going home, it was strange yet pleasing to find him missing his family so much, though it'd been only some hours away from them. Perhaps becoming a husband and father, and having his own family had changed him enough to not make this seem stranger than usual.

While Kabir was speaking, Anaisha looked at her sons, both of whom were smiling, listening to their Dada and eager to see and speak to their Dada. So an idea came into her mind and she waited for Kabir to stop speaking, to share her idea with him.

"I'm here only, Kabir, and the kids are sitting here next to me. Are you okay if I Skype you?" she asked as she knew her sons will be more happy with a Skype call than a regular phone call.

"Yeah sure, I'm anyway in my hotel suite," Kabir said while sitting on the soft red velvet couch of his hotel suite. He smiled sheepishly as the idea of Skype call didn't occur to him. But then his wife was more smarter in using this apps and all. Leaning back on the couch, he waited patiently for his wife to Skype call him.

Ending the call, Anaisha went to pick her iPad. She came back and settled on the bed while her sons looked at her with confusion, not getting why their mother didn't let them talk to their father, probably because being two little boys they didn't understand that their mother was going to make them video chat with their father.

Ayaan tapped Anaisha hand, who was making a Skype call through her iPad and asked, "Mumma, Dada?"

"Just a minute, baby. Dada's gonna talk with you two through this screen," she answered while pointing toward her iPad screen.

And as she said, the video call connected and Kabir appeared on the screen. As soon as the boys saw their Dada, they squeaked loudly and in unison, said, "Dada!"

"Hey, my big guys! How are you both?" Kabir asked his sons in a very delighted tone as he was missing be around them.

Excitedly, both Ayaan and Arman started talking with their Dada while their mother lovingly gazed at her little boys who both  were extremely happy and cheerful now, unlike some time back when they both were just to disheartened to even have their food.

The video chat went on for almost half an hour, when finally Anaisha asked her husband to end the chat as it wasn't good for the kids to sit in front of an electronic screen for so long, though she was the same person who till some years back was addicted to her phone and laptop. Effect of being a mother, certainly.

Her husband obligated and before ending the call, made his sons promise that they won't sulk or act grumpily while he's away and will be good boys to their mother and everyone else (his wife had told him everything while his sons were busy bringing out the new toys and stuffed animals to the bed which their uncles got them).

"Boys, promise me, you won't trouble your mother now and will be good boys, okay? I'll be back in two days and if you both behave like good boys, then I'll get you both more toys and also take you both to zoo. Have your food on time and listen to your mommy. Now Dada gotta go. Bye and love you three," Kabir said, with a big smile on his face.

"We love you too!" said his wife and sons.

Anaisha was about to disconnect the call when Kabir stopped her and said, "And Annie stop being so grumpy and irritated yaar. They are kids and really aren't supposed to follow a specific sleeping pattern. So chillax and I know they won't trouble you much. Bye and take care. I love you."

This didn't go down well with Annie but she didn't show it and with a sweet smile, she replied, "Yeah sure, Kabir. Love you too and all the best for the medical conference." And then they disconnected her call.

As promised to their father, both the boys were back to their usual selves and enjoyed their time in their maternal grandparents' house with their cousins, uncles and aunts.

Three days later, Anaisha went back to her home as Kabir was supposed to be back by midnight. In their excitement to meet their father after five long days, both the boys stayed in their parents' room only, playing with their stuffed animals; 'Bir', a big brown teddy dressed in a pink t-shirt and 'Annie' a slightly small light brown coloured teddy with a blue frock. Both of these two teddy bears, christened after their parents' nicknames, were the most favourite toys of the boys, which their parents had gifted them when they were only a few months old.

The twins tried to their best to stay awake but failed and their mother, around nine at night, finally made them both sleep with their 'Bir and Annie' lying beside them in their parents' room.

It was around 1 in night when Kabir reached home with his father Karan, who had picked him up from the airport. Reaching home, Kabir met up with his mother, GM and chatted for few minutes with them before they retired to their rooms and Kabir made his upstairs while his wife got him a glass of cold water and some chocolates.

As much excited as his sons were to meet him, he was just as much excited to meet them. Since he was very happy to be back home with his  family, Anaisha hadn't informed that his sons weren't awake and were deep in sleep.

As they entered the room, Anaisha was about to tell him that when she saw Kabir's lips curl into a big grin and followed his gaze to find her sons sitting on the bed with a huge bright smile on their faces, holding Bir and Annie in their hands. They apparently had woken up due to all the commotion downstairs.

"Hello, babies. Missed me much?" Kabir merrily said, which made Anaisha giggle as the excitement and happiness he showed right now was comparatively, slightly greater than the time he came to meet Annie in Boston on her birthday. A smile broke on Anaisha's face as she saw the happy reunion of her sons with their father.

The father-sons trio continued to talk with each other for some good forty minutes when Kabir finally grew tired and turning to Annie, said sleepily, "Annie, why don't you put them to sleep? It's already quarter past two."

But his wife shrugged her shoulders and smirkingly said, "Bir, they have just woken up an hour back, I don't think so they're gonna go back to sleep anytime soon. So why don't you take them to their nursery and play with them, you know, catch up for all these five days you weren't here. While I'll catch up on my sleep, okay?"

"But Annie, baby, I'm really sleepy and you know, I don't know how to put them to sleep," Kabir said, glancing at his sons, who were grinning an ear-to-ear grin, absolutely in no mood to go back to sleep, rather they were in a happy mood to play with their father.

"Arre so what? They are in no mood to sleep. See their happy, innocent faces, how rejoiced they are to see you back. C'mon now, enjoy your father-sons time and let me sleep. Boys, go, take your Dada to your room and play with him," said Anaisha innocently and her boys immediately followed their mother's advice and gleefully dragged their father to their room while their father helplessly stared at his wife, who smirkingly went to lie on the bed and covered herself with the quilt. It was now Kabir's turn to stay awake till four and play with the kids. She purposely did this was her way to take revenge from him, which she successfully did as the very next day, Kabir apologised to her, making her laugh very loud.
