Chapter 4 Part 2
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! I'm so sorry that this took so long to get here. I just haven't felt like writing or checking wattpad at all until that last two days. There was so much that I wanted to add to this chapter, but it was long enough already. Like the other 'part 2' this mirrors the events of 'part 1' but from Yami's point of view. This chapter has a bigger emphasis on our two favourite albinos rather than the main ship. But I promise you'll get to see more adorableness from them soon. :) Every read, vote and comment is greatly appreciated, so please don't be shy to give feedback. Please tell me if there are any gramatical errors or spelling mistakes. I do go over and edit but I know that I miss some. I do not own any of the characters apart from Mr Kumo. Please enjoy! :)

"I can't do it!"
"Yes you can!"
"I can't do it!"
"Yes you can!"
"I can't do it!"
"Yes you can!"
"I promise, I really can't."
"Don't make me come over there!"
"I'd like to see you try," Yami mumbled under his breath. It was period 6. On a Friday. On the last day of term. And he was in P.E. Running an 800 metre 'race'. What fun. Yami usually liked running, especially if it was to get away from something; like security guards, police men, Bakura. But running for fun? That seemed pointless and a big waste of time and effort. He would much rather be in history with Yugi, but the gods of the timetable had denied him once again.
His breaths came as laboured heaves. His shirt was never going to be warn again and his legs felt as though they would stop working at any second. He recalled that there was supposed to be a proper way to breath to make it easier, but that information had decided to recede into the depths of Yami's brain. He had only just finished the first lap of the oval, one more to go. He felt like crying. All the sporty kids were practically finished, even most of the girls only had half a lap to go. If it weren't for Ryou who was running beside him, he would have given up and started walking ages ago. Ryou had his hair tied up in a ponytail to keep it off his neck. His cheeks were flushed but his chocolate eyes were bright and determined. Yami admired his attitude but couldn't find it in his heart to feel the same. There was nothing to motivate him, not even Ryou could change that.
A surprised sound from the albino pulled Yami from his thoughts, "What is it?"
Ryou glanced at him briefly before smirking. Yami didn't know if he was hallucinating, but in that one moment he looked just like Bakura.
"I know how to make you run faster,"
Yami widened his eyes in shock, he gulped, "How?"
Ryou smirked again, "Did you know that I have a pet tarantula?"
Yami saw where this was going.
"If you don't beat me to the finish line, I'll put it somewhere in your house."
Yami stared at Ryou, he wouldn't really do that, right? Ryou smiled dangerously and his eyes flashed. Oh Ra, he would. Ryou quickened his pace and sped ahead of Yami. Oh no!
Yami growled, there was no way he was going to let Ryou win. He could feel determination replace his fear and forced his legs to move faster. As his breathing became more rhythmic he felt the adrenaline lending him its strength. Slowly he gained on Ryou. As he passed he noted to never let Ryou and Bakura meet, together they would actually end up killing him. He could hear Ryou right behind him and forced himself to run even faster. He could see his teacher standing at the finish line with his stopwatch. Yami narrowed his eyes, and lengthened his stride; he was not going to get another D in P.E. He flew across the finish and jumped triumphantly. He didn't care that he placed second last, to him it felt like he had won. If Yami had looked back he would have seen the proud smile that was gracing Ryou's face.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You weren't actually going let loose a spider in my house right?" Yami laughed hopefully. He and Ryou were walking to their lockers after getting changed back into their uniform. It was the end of the day, at the end of the term and the excitement could be felt, radiating from the students, infecting others with its unconditional happiness. For once, when other students decided it would be a great idea to stop in the middle of the hallway, Yami didn't get irritated. He had noticed however, it was bothering him less and less ever since he had met Yugi and Ryou. He actually looked forward to walking with them to classes, so he didn't mind having to wait for inconsiderate students to get out of the way.
"Of course I wouldn't," assured Ryou, his tone sly. Yami chuckled, he didn't believe him. He glanced over at Ryou; he had taken his hair back down and his cheeks had returned to their snowy complexion. If it weren't for his eyes and his kind smile, he would look exactly like Bakura. Ryou had never mentioned any brothers or cousins, so Yami didn't know if he was straying into dangerous territory.
"You know, you really remind me of someone I know."
"Hmm,"
"Do you have any brothers?"
Ryou, looked over at him, confusion clearly evident on his features, "Not that I know of. Why?"
"Well, this friend of mine, he looks just like you. And I don't just mean face shape or anything, he looks nearly exactly like you."
Ryou looked back out at the hallway, his face unreadable, "Are you sure?"
"Pretty sure."
"So you ask me about how I look nearly exactly like a guy that you know and not how Yugi looks nearly exactly like you?"
"Huh..." He'd never really thought about it.
"Are you sure you two aren't related?"
"Huh..." Yami turned back towards the hallway as well. What if we are? I wouldn't really know...
"Isn't your locker just there?" Ryou snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked in the direction that Ryou was pointing, "So it is."
As he went to collect his stuff, he felt Ryou's presence behind him. He looked over his shoulder, questioning the albino.
Ryou smiled, "I thought that I'd go with you and Yugi to play rehearsals," he twisted his hands nervously, "if that's okay?"
Yami chuckled, "Of course."
He had accompanied Ryou to his locker before they made their way to rehearsals. The two were fine to walk in silence, both were thinking about what was said before. When they reached the Hall, Yami opened the door for Ryou, allowing him to enter first. Ryou muttered a small thanks before obliging. When Yami joined him on the other side he was oblivious to Ryou's searching gaze. He instead was focused on the middle of the room where Mr Kumo was pointing a group of students towards the door.
"Maybe we don't have rehearsals today," mumbled Yami. He was about to turn back towards the door himself when he heard a sharp yell from Mr Kumo, "Yami, I need you stay here. The main characters are to be fit for costumes backstage."
Yami nodded and looked towards Ryou who just shrugged. The two started following Mr Kumo who lead them over the floor and up onto the stage and then into a dressing room. Yami looked around, Yugi wasn't here yet. He turned quickly towards Ryou who was looking around at the colourful costumes, "Do you mind standing out on the stage so when Yugi comes he knows where to go?"
Ryou turned his attention to Yami. Their gazes locked for a while before his lips broke into one of his soft smiles, "Of course,"
Yami let out a breath, "Thanks, he has history last. It's on the other side of the school so he'll probably be a bit late."
Ryou nodded and headed back out the door that they came.
"Yami."
He turned. Next to Mr Kumo was a young lady with wavy golden hair and a smile just as bright. "This is Mai Kujaku, official costume designer for our play."
Yami bowed. Miss Kujaku smiled, "Oh isn't he a cutie," Yami was glad that Yugi and Ryou weren't there to hear that, "The lovely Mr Kumo has told me that you are going to be a pharaoh and I've got just the costume for you." Yami forced a smile, great. She gestured towards the change rooms. Yami made his way over, pushing his way through the heavy red curtain. It's bigger than I thought. He looked around the room and saw himself staring back at him. Oh great, a mirror. His eyes widened, did my hair look like that all day?!
"Okay sweetie," Miss Kujaku barged her way into the room, carrying a whole assortment of items," I've brought a whole lot of things that I think will work marvellously," she placed the items on a small shelf in the corner of the room, "tell me when you have most of it on so that I can fix it up." Yami nodded, she smiled, and he was left alone with his reflection. He lifted up the main article of clothing. It looked like a tunic, great. He took of his socks and shoes and then stripped down to his boxers.
He heard a loud crash from outside and jumped, bashing into the cold mirror with his back. When it touched his exposed skin he squealed and fell forward onto his uniform.
"Ugh..." he groaned. What in the name of Ra was that? He dragged himself off his uniform and grabbed the tunic off the shelf. It was softer than he thought it would be. Now slightly more optimistic he pulled it over his head. It sat perfectly on his frame. Not loose and not tight. He looked back towards the rest of the items. Now curious as to what was there. He saw a large cylinder of gold. He picked it up, judging the weight in his hands. Light. He saw that there was a hinge.
"Oh." He opened it and clipped it around his waist. There were many smaller cylinders on the shelf. One at a time he placed them on his ankles and his wrists. There were still two more, "Huh," He looked in the mirror before clipping them onto his upper arms. He smiled at himself before looking back at the other items, "Yeaahhh, Miss Kujaku? I think I need your help now."
She stepped into the room gracefully before looking Yami up and down. "You look lovely sweetie." Yami stood still as she finished up the rest of the costume. A neck plate now rested on his chest and a night blue cape around his neck, flowing down his back. She tied a small blue cloth to the bottom part of the tunic and had clipped small golden wings to the shoulders. Clip on earing now hung unnaturally off his ears. "I hope you don't mind if I give you a bit of eyeliner sweetie?"
Yami shook his head.
"Great, now look up."
Eyeliner was not really an experience that he wanted to repeat. His eyes were threatening to water the whole time and Miss Kujaku had to hold his head so that he wouldn't move. "There," Miss Kujaku nodded at her work, "now just one more thing." She grabbed the last item off the shelf. It was a crown, a circlet of gold, with wings on the side and wadjet eye in the middle. She placed it delicately on his head. It was cold against his forehead but sat comfortably in place.
"Ah, Mr Mutou. Here at last I see. I was starting to think that you weren't going to show."
"Sorry Mr Kumo."
Yami's breath hitched in his throat when he heard the voices outside. Miss Kujaku had heard them as well. She turned Yami towards the mirror. He blinked. The pharaoh blinked back. Wow, I look...amazing. He heard Miss Kujaku giggle at his expression. He tried to sound irritated, "Ra, I look like an idiot."
"Nonsense darling, you look just like a pharaoh." I really do. The eyeliner made his eyes more prominent, shining like rubies. The gold and the blue made his pale skin see more browned. He looked regal, powerful. He groaned; it wasn't him. This wasn't Yami, "You know pharaohs had tall crowns right? This is just a band of gold." he gestured towards the circlet.
"It's called poetic licence sweetie. And besides, a crown would never fit on your hair." Yami smiled sheepishly at his reflection. Yeah.
"Miss Kujaku, if you please." Mr Kumo's voice called from the other side of the curtain. She giggled again before stepping out confidently. Yami knew that he had to go out next. He turned and stared at the curtain. He guessed that Yugi and Ryou were probably out there as well. He grew nervous. What where they going to think? Looking for answers intensely in the red folds, it was the only thing that separated him from the eyes of his friends. Normally Yami wasn't a very self-conscious person, but he cared greatly what Yugi and Ryou thought. They were the best friends he ever had, apart from Bakura of course.
"Don't be shy Yami, you look wonderful!" Miss Kujaku's voice shook him from his thoughts. He groaned, it's now or never. He pushed aside the curtain and stepped out into the soft lighting of the room.
Yugi was standing there, eyes widening as he spotted Yami. He felt Yugi's gaze rake over his body. For once in his life, Yami felt exposed. This fear subsided however when he saw a pink dusting over Yugi's cheeks. Oh that's how it is, he smirked. He wriggled his eyebrows, "You like it Yugi?"
Said boy jumped from his thoughts, crossing his arms and raising his chin, "Jerk."
Quite right, he couldn't help but laugh at the indignant figure in front of him. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Ryou looking quizzically at the two. This made him laugh harder.
Yami waited patiently next to Ryou while Yugi got his costume fixed up. Yami kept catching Ryou staring at him. Eventually he couldn't take the awkwardness any more, "So what do you think?" he asked hopefully. Now that he was actually allowed to take a good look at Yami he took in every detail that he could.
"It's actually pretty awesome. But if feels like something's missing."
Yami sighed, exasperated, "When I want costume advice from you, I'll be sure to let you know."
Ryou giggle lightly before changing the subject, "So, are pharaohs afraid of spiders?" he asked teasingly. Yami gave him the best mock glare that he could, "Find out and see what happens, I dare you," he growled. Ryou tried to keep a serious face but failed miserably. His eyes lit up as laughter took over his body. Yami couldn't help but smile along with him.
Luckily he calmed down just in time as the change-room curtain was swept away and out stepped a nervous looking Yugi. Yami didn't let his face give anything away as Miss Kujaku moved Yugi into the centre of the room to fix up and tweak his costume, all under the scrutinizing gaze of Mr Kumo. It looked like he was wearing a pillowcase that had holes cut into it. Around his waist was a purple rope that perfectly matched his glittering eyes. He shuffled awkwardly from foot to foot, this made Yami smirk. He didn't expect to get a reaction from Yugi, but none the less, he got one: An angry glare that could give Bakura a run for his money. Oh Yugi, you're just digging yourself a hole. Yami leaned over to Ryou, "Hey Ryou, being the great friends that we are I reckon that we should make this 'interesting' for Yugi."
Ryou's eyes flashed and he smiled in agreement. When Miss Kujaku had her back to them, Yami poked out his tongue and widened his eyes. He felt Ryou shift next to him and assumed he was doing something similar. The look on Yugi's face however, was priceless. His jaw dropped in shock before his lips started pulling into a smile. Yami could see him shaking and could tell that he was trying to hold back a laugh. But Yugi seemed to have more self-control than he thought. His face grew blank and stern and he was standing as still as ever. Yami, not one to be bested, ceased in his clownery. He caught Ryou's eye and it seemed that he had the same idea. He and Ryou linked arms and started skipping around in circle. Yami couldn't imagine anything funnier than a pharaoh taking part in silly nursery games, and it seemed to have the desired effect. Every time that Yami could see Yugi it looked like he was having an internal struggle. He bit his lip and Yami had to admit, it was flipping adorable. Sadly Miss Kujaku finished with his costume, "You look wonderful darling!"
Yami and Ryou stopped dancing before they could get in trouble, and Yugi looked thoroughly relieved. Yami watched as Mr Kumo walked closer to Yugi to inspect him more closely, "This will suffice. Thank you Miss Kujaku, you may leave now." Miss Kujaku smiled and looked over at Yami and Yugi, eyes glittering when she was reminded of her work, "Okay, but may I ask that over the holidays you two could maybe work on a tan? You are to look like Egyptians."
What? With that she walked out, Mr Kumo following after, "You two may change out of these costumes and leave when you are ready. I will be outside ready to lock up, please do not dill dally."
Yami wandered back into the change room that he was in previously and took everything off and placed it in a neat pile before changing back into his uniform. He decided that he would keep the eyeliner on, and that was not just because he didn't have anything to take it off with. He left the costume in the room before leaving and sitting next to Ryou to put his shoes back on. Not long after, Yugi joined them. When everyone was accounted for Ryou smiled cheekily, "So Guys, how are you going to get tanned? Are you actually going to leave the pasty skin club?" he flicked his hair over his shoulder before sticking out his pale arm to put emphasis on his words. Yugi giggled and Yami couldn't help the sarcasm that slipped into his voice, "We might actually have to spend some time outside this holiday."
Yugi looked up at him will mock ignorance on his face, "Outside. What's 'outside'?"
Yami and Ryou laughed at this and even more when Yugi shook his head at their behaviour. A sharp intake of breath from Yugi brought an end to Yami's laughter.
"Hey Yami, what level of society are you doing for your history report?"
Oh, right, that thing. I nearly forgot about that. Yami then remembered what class he was doing. Crap. He looked down and hoped that he wasn't going red, "Pharaoh," he mumbled. Ryou laughed a maniacal laugh that would do Bakura proud. Looking back at Yugi, Yami saw him shaking his head like a disappointed parent, "How predictable. How very predictable."
Not one to back down, Yami shot back, "Oh yeah? What class are doing then?" This time it was Yugi who got to be embarrassed, "Servant..."
Knew it, "And I'm the predictable one am I?" he teased, smiling. His face fell when a familiar pair of arms wrapped them selves over his shoulders and chest, "Yes Pharaoh, you are."
With a great heave Yami threw him off and turned to face him, "I told you not to do that! People will think that we're gay."
Bakura blinked, "But we are."
Yami groaned, " Yes, but not with each other!"
Bakura just smirked to add to Yami's frustration. Wait, "How'd you get in here anyway?"
Bakura gave him the 'look', "Seriously, when are you going stop asking that and learning to live with the fact that I know how to open doors?"
Unbelievable.
It was at this time that Bakura lost interest in the conversation and turned to look at the smaller pair. His rust red eyes widened and he was visibly shocked at seeing a smaller copy of himself. Yami felt a change in the universe when their eyes locked. Bakura didn't shift his gaze off Ryou, "Hey Angel, who's your friend?"
Yugi sighed at being addressed as 'Angel', "This is Ryou. Ryou, this is Bakura..."
Bakura cut in with a growl, "Thief, actually. Why the hell does he look like me?"
He took a step and closed the gap between himself and Ryou. Yami looked on at the encounter. It was really something to behold. Bakura's gaze wandered Ryou's face before returning to their place looking into his eyes, "Are you a demon?"
Yami felt like smacking himself in the face. Of all the stupid things that Bakura had ever said, that was the stupidest.
Ryou didn't miss a beat, "Maybe," he shrugged, "I wouldn't test it if I were you."
Bakura growled again. To the untrained ear it might have sounded like a threat. But to Yami, and surprisingly to Ryou too, this growl sounded impressed. Bakura turned, "Pharaoh, Angel, Demon. I think it is time to go, we have a lot to discuss and I know just the perfect little café." Bakura opened a door that Yami hadn't seen before and allowed Ryou to go through first, Yami and Yugi following without a clue about what just took place.
The two albinos hadn't talked at all on the way to the café. Yami thought it was probably just as well. The tension between the two was beyond human. Yugi seemed to have the same idea, as he didn't spark a conversation either. Instead his purple eyes swirled with thoughts. When they reached their destination Yami was happy that he recognised that it was the same café that Bakura had taken him to months ago. He had tried searching for the café himself as he never did discover the name of it but he never had any luck. He quickly scanned for the sign but was rushed inside before he could lay eyes upon the name. Inside it was just how he remembered it. The comforting smells wrapped around him and lead the group towards the booth that he sat at last time. Once again Bakura went to order, leaving Yami sitting across from Yugi and Ryou. Both of them seemed to be deep in thought, but Yami was content to just sit and watch. He looked around, the place already becoming familiar. The timeless edge that the café radiated made it the perfect place for anyone. But it was innocent looking enough that it wasn't target to any unwanted guests. The air tasted spicy and sweet at the same time leaving Yami feeling warm and cheerful. The place seemed to have a similar effect on Yugi whose amethyst orbs were wandering the room, taking in every detail they could. Yami watched as slowly a smile spread across Yugi's face. It was small and delicate but so full of genuine happiness and awe that Yami couldn't help but smile at the beauty.
"Pharaoh, I never knew you could smile," exclaimed Bakura mockingly as he returned and dropped down elegantly next to Yami.
"It's probably because none of them are ever aimed at you," he snapped back, hoping against hope that Yugi hadn't caught him staring. Bakura chuckled, amused at Yami's attempt to try and level the score. A dry cough from Ryou brought both males attention back to the table. It was like looking into a dodgy mirror. Yugi was sitting across from him and Ryou was sitting across from Bakura. If it wasn't for the slight difference in hair, eyes and face the two pairs could be twins.
"Was this the guy you were comparing me to earlier today?" Ryou asked Yami. For once his chocolate eyes were unreadable and it scared Yami, "Um, yes..."
"Well let me tell you something," Ryou's voice was harsh and cold, " this man is nothing like me. He is a thief, a liar, a wicked villainous scoundrel!"
Everyone at the table was shocked by Ryou's outburst. His usually kind face was twisted with rage and tears were spilling from his scorching eyes. Yugi quickly scooted closer and wrapped his arms around the distraught teenager. While Yugi whispered comforts to Ryou Yami turned and glared at Bakura, "What the hell did you do?!"
Bakura's usually calm demeanour was broken. He looked at Ryou with surprise. Yami watched as sudden realisation washed over his features, "Oh my god..." a shaky hand covered his mouth and his eyes widened in slight fear, "it's you..."
Yami tried to keep his voice cool and collected, "What exactly happened? How do you two know each other?" He was looking at Bakura but it was Ryou who answered, "A few years ago this varmint broke into my house and stole from me!" Yami knew that Bakura was a thief but he never really thought about how it affected the victims. Yami felt his heart wrench to see how broken Ryou was.
"And that's not even the worst of it, " whispered Ryou, "if he stole money or technology it would have been fine." He took a shaky breath, "but what he stole was the Millennium Ring."
Bakura stirred himself, "I...I'm sorry,"
Yami stared in surprise at Bakura, he'd never heard those words escape those lips.
Ryou growled, "That's not all, Thief. The Millennium Ring wasn't just some piece of jewellery. It's important to my family. My Grandpa bought it for me in Egypt. It was our treasure. Me and him." Ryou's gaze softened slightly while he shifted through his memories. It grew stern again before long, "And then you took it! The thing that mattered so much to us. The thing that bonded us together, and you took it!" Ryou finally looked up to catch Bakura's eyes, "He never even got to see it again before he died. That is all. Your. Fault. And what did you do? You probably sold it! You bastard." he spat.
Bakura couldn't hold Ryou's broken gaze for long. He dipped his head in defeat, his own eyes drenched in regret, drifting through his own haunted memories.
Yugi continued in his comforting ministrations until Ryou was calm enough to sit up and start wiping away the tears. At his sniff, Bakura looked up, determination flashing across his face, "Ryou," he addressed him by name, " I promise you that I will find the Ring, and return it to you."
Ryou scoffed, "Yeah right." he sniffed again.
Bakura didn't respond but instead whispered to himself, " I heard your heart broken yowls that night, Ryou. Those screams have haunted me all my life. I promise you that I will give that piece of your heart back. Even if it takes me all my time on earth; I will find it and make you whole once again so that you can make your grandpa proud when you see him again. So you can live your life in happiness. I promise."
Yami didn't give any sign that he heard Bakura's oath. It wasn't meant for his ears. He saw Ryou jerk slightly and hoped that he heard it at least. It was the most beautiful and gut wrenching thing that Yami had ever heard and he hoped that Bakura would be able to fulfil his promise.
The waiter drifted in and delivered their beverages before any of them even noticed his presence. Yami noted that it was the same drink that he enjoyed so much last time. He took a quick sip, the bitterness of the coffee clashed with the spice of the cinnamon on his tongue. His tastebuds dancing as the flavours swirled and exploded.
"Wow. Really?" at Ryou's sarcastic tone Yami looked up, "You got me tea? Just because I'm British it doesn't mean I don't like other drinks too."
Bakura looked at him amusedly, "What, you don't like it?"
Ryou blushed slightly, " I didn't say that. I just don't like you conforming to racial stereotypes."
Bakura shook his head exasperated, "What ever you say, Demon."
Ryou ignored him and continued with his drink.
Yami had to stifle a laugh before looking over at Yugi who was sniffing suspiciously at his drink. From where Yami sat, it looked like hot chocolate.
Yugi finally stuck up the courage to take a sip. Using both hands gripping the mug he lifted it towards his face. Yami saw marshmallows bop to the surface before a tiny mouth engulfed them. Yami smiled when he saw Yugi's eyes light up at the taste. He put the mug down and a pink tongue flicked out to lick the froth from around his lips. Unconsciously he brushed one of his golden bangs behind his ear before going in for another sip. A nudge from Bakura broke the trance that Yami was in. He turned and looked at the thief, irritated, 'what?' he mouthed.
'Quit staring' was the reply. Yami looked back towards his drink, I wasn't staring was I?
