My POV
It broke my heart to see Edward being taken away. Oswald felt bad for me, but he wasn't too good at showing his soft side. He took me back home and I thanked him for letting me come.
I ignored the news recently because I knew they wouldn't say anything good. But I kept overhearing it from Bruce.
He was too obsessed with finding out our parent's killer that he was going all out. He's been doing this for months now.
Even Alfred thought it wasn't healthy.
"I need justice," was all Bruce would say when Alfred would tell him to give it a rest. I never bothered because Bruce doesn't listen to me anyway.
A week later, I saw that a cops event was in peril. Every single one was knocked out and the detectives were on the case. They got a call from a strange man who kept giving them clues as to where he would strike next.
I decided to sneak out and find out what was going on.
I found the place where it was being held and saw every cop in their chairs, asleep. The gas was cleared out, so I was fine, but didn't know where to go from here.
I headed out into the main lobby where I heard some voices coming from above me. I followed the sounds and it took me to a huge staircase that had to be at least 15 stories. I saw a chair leaning over. That was not a good sight to see, but I couldn't tell if someone was sitting in the chair or not. I started my way up the stairs, but stopped a couple of stories below when I recognized the voices.
One sounded like a distressed Harvey Bullock, another sounded like Edward. I didn't think he'd be freed from Arkham so soon! Since I knew it was them, I decided to keep going up, but I wasn't expecting the sight that I came across. Harvey was in the chair and Edward was holding a knife right by him.
"Mr. Nygma..." I couldn't find my voice. He looked right at me with shock.
"Rebecca? What are you doing here?" He put the knife away and came down the stairs to me.
"Better question is what is going on here?" My question seemed more important than his.
"Get out of here Rebecca! Nygma's a lunatic!" Harvey screamed from his chair.
"What is he doing in that chair?" I decided to ask as well.
"Look, I can't exactly explain anything to you, and I'm really sorry," he grabbed the cuff of my shirt and dragged me up the stairs and threw me by Harvey. I was confused as to what was happening.
So this is what people meant when they said Edward was insane. I didn't want to believe it.
"Detective, what is happening?" I asked Harvey.
"Ed's gone out of his mind and kidnapped me, what else is new?" He was panicking too much to joke.
If I tried to get him free from the chair, Edward would probably get mad. I'm sure I could fight him, maybe. But that would just crush me more because I really like Edward and not this new evil persona.
I quietly made my way to the ropes and tried to pull Harvey back very gently.
The chair was making quite some noise, but Ed couldn't hear it because he was a story below, on the lookout.
Once the chair was now in a safe position, I untied Harvey and he ran up the stairs to get away from Ed. What I decided to do next was very foolish, but I needed answers.
"Edward," I called out his name. He immediately turned around and was shocked that Detective Bullock was gone.
"No! You weren't supposed to do that," he started his way towards me again.
I was ready for him, but I hated it.
"Forget Jim Gordon, you're a better enemy for me," he grabbed me again and threw me down the stairs. My ankle came out twisted and I couldn't stand up.
"Why are you doing this?" I started to tear up a little.
"Because this is who I am, I finally found my true purpose in life," he stated as he began his descent to me. "And don't call me Edward anymore, my name is The Riddler," he struck a pose.
I just officially lost my best friend.
"Goodbye Rebecca," he took out a gun and pointed it at me. Since I couldn't move, I had no choice but to accept what would happen.
"Edward, I actually understood who you were, you are not The Riddler, you're a good man with a kind heart. I beg of you not to sink to this level, remember who you were before. Dorky, funny, kind, smart, my friend," I gave a cheesy speech and hoped it would get to him. He started to hesitate.
"No, you can't do this to me," he seemed to be having a mental battle with himself.
"Please Ed, be yourself again," I begged.
He then crouched down to my level. At this point, he was right in my face.
"I am myself," was what he said before he hit me in the head with his gun. He knocked me out with it and started laughing.
When I woke up, I was in the GCPD Medical Examination room. Lots of people were here since there were quite some injuries that happened. I still couldn't stand up because my ankle was broken.
"Dr. Thompkins!" I shouted to see if she could hear me. She then came in with a panicked look on her face.
"What is it, Rebecca?" She asked.
"What happened? How did I get here? Where's Edward?" I started asking question after question.
"Calm down, your heart rate is very high, the medical team found you and brought you back here, as for Ed, we don't know where he went, I'm really sorry," she explained to me
"I really thought he was my friend, I didn't think I'd lose him like this..." I began to tear up again. Lee came in to hug me. I accepted her embrace because I really needed it. Unfortunately since I couldn't walk, Lee said I had to stay here until my ankle heals, which who knows how long that will take.
At least I got to know more cops and hear about some interesting mysteries from Jim and Harvey. I heard that a man named Lucius Fox, who worked at Wayne Enterprises, took over forensics. He seems like a nice guy, but I miss Edward way too much.
These past couple of months have been way too much for me. I make a friend, he starts to go crazy, then I lose him to Gotham's curse of making criminals. Yet he also lost himself in the process. I need to find him and set this right.
With the mental battle he was having with himself, it looked like there was still some Ed inside of him, otherwise he would've killed me right then and there. My ankle was feeling a little bit better, but it still hurt to walk. I didn't care and decided to limp my way out of the police department. It was very hard to go unnoticed though. I had to talk my way out of here. To Lee, Jim, Harvey, and pretty much anyone else who was urging me to stay.
I needed to find Selina, I was not going through this alone. I managed to find her sitting in a corner, petting a cat.
"Selina," I called out to her. She noticed my limping and grew concerned.
"Woah, you're walking like Penguin, what happened?" She asked.
"Long story, but I need your help," I told her.
"With what?"
"Have you seen a man in a green suit and glasses around here?" I described the last thing I saw him wearing.
"You mean The Riddler?" She laughed at the name.
"Yes, I mean no, I mean, kind of?" I couldn't exactly answer that.
"Yeah, I've seen him, he likes to stand by the pier a lot," she pointed in the direction of where it was.
"Why do you need to find him anyway? He's dangerous from what I hear," Selina wanted to know.
"He was my friend, and I need to bring him back to his senses, will you please help me?" I said.
"I wish I could, but there are some things I need to take care of, good luck getting him back though," she then climbed a ladder to get up on the roof of the building we were standing by.
Great, now I'm stuck dealing with him on my own again. He may hurt me, but he won't kill me. The Edward inside would never do that, at least I hope not.
Funny enough, when I made it to the pier, he was actually there, gazing into the water with all the seagulls flying by.
"Edward," I said. He never turned around.
"You shouldn't have come here," he finally spoke.
"You're right, I shouldn't have, but I did," I told him. He then turned around and had a completely straight face.
"Let me help you Ed," I extended my hand out. He looked at it and was pondering whether he should take it or not. He made his way over to me and I began to sweat a little. I was scared of what he would do.
What surprised me is he actually took my hand, but then he led me to the edge of the pier.
"The view is beautiful, you know," he told me.
"Yes," I agreed. With him standing behind me, it was giving me a lot of anxiety.
"A nightmare for some, for others, a savior I come. My hands cold and bleak, it's the warm hearts they seek," he spoke.
"Dea-" I stopped myself from saying the answer. I knew he had a gun to my back, the riddle made it obvious.
"You know what Ed, just go ahead and do it. There's no point in living anymore if I can't have my friend," everything just left me. All the feelings, thoughts, everything. Ed was still hesitating. What's stopping him?
"Gah, I can't do it," he threw his gun in the water. I turned around to see him there.
"Edward..." I looked him in the eyes.
He took off the hat he was wearing and set it down.
"You really are my friend," it looked like a tear came from his eye. I went in for a hug and he returned it.
A voice then came from behind us.
"Hello there!" I let go of Ed to see who was there. I've seen him before.
"Now I know what you're both thinking, who is this handsome one of a kind guy and why have I never seen him outside of Arkham before? Well to answer that, hi, my name is Jerome Valeska, and I'm taking you both with me, cool? Cool," he announced.
He was the guy smiling at me when I walked into Arkham to visit Ed.
"Um, no thank you," I bluntly answered him.
"See, I knew you'd both be a challenge, but your friend Penguin told me to get you by any means necessary, so yay, my way!" He ran over to us both. Ed took out a knife for defense, but Jerome just took it out of his hand.
"Really? You don't have anything else?" He taunted. "Oh yeah, you threw your gun in the water," he saw that happen.
"What does Penguin want anyway?" Edward asked.
"He didn't exactly say, but can we please make this easy? Just come with me and nobody will get hurt, at first," Jerome told us.
"Fine," Ed gave in and we both followed Jerome to a car that led us to a huge house. I'm guessing it was Oswald's house? This is where he was, so it made sense I suppose.
When we walked in, there were a couple others standing in the room, surrounding Oswald.
He was sitting there, smiling at us. The other people consisted of a girl in a fire suit, a man with white hair in a robot looking suit, a man with a top hat, and another person who looked like Jerome.
"What is going on here?" Edward was the first to speak up.
"We were bringing you here for the league of villains get together," Oswald announced. I hid behind Edward because I didn't like it here as much.
"Rebecca, step forward please," Oswald noticed me.
I did as he said, even though I didn't want to.
"I'd like you to meet Firefly, Mr. Freeze, Jervis Tetch, and Jeremiah Valeska," he introduced everybody in the room. I awkwardly waved at everyone, yet didn't know what I was doing here.
"I'm not a villain though," it was a really bad idea to speak up.
"But you're friends with one," Jerome said.
"So?" I looked over at him. "That doesn't mean anything, Ed has been my friend way before he changed." I still wish he never became The Riddler, I miss the old Nygma.
"Jervis?" Oswald asked the man in the top hat. "Think you can help us out a little?" He smiled and made his way to the front.
"Wait a minute Oswald, what's really going on here? You have intentions to change Rebecca?" Edward caught on.
"Well yeah, if we want to take over Gotham, everyone here has to be on board, even Rebecca," Oswald responded.
"So I get no say here?" I spoke up.
"I mean if you did get a say, how would we know if you didn't remain at bay?" Jervis rhymed.
He strikes me as a major weirdo. How have I not seen him in Gotham before?
"Quick question, can you hear my watch ticking?" He casually took out a pocket watch. Yes it was ticking, but I didn't know what he was doing. Edward didn't like this plan.
"Tetch, stop," Ed warned him.
"I'm only going off orders here, anyway, look into my eyes, not above them or below them, but right in the center," he kept giving instructions. I did that, but nothing was happening.
"What the," Jervis immediately stopped.
"What's the problem?" Oswald looked annoyed.
"She's immune, I can't hypnotize her," Jervis didn't like saying that. That managed to calm Edward down, but he was also confused as to what happened.
"That's not possible, you're the freaking Mad Hatter for crying out loud!" Oswald started to get mad.
"Can we just kill her then?" Jeremiah plainly asked.
"Pardon?" I looked at him like he was crazy, then again every single person in this room was crazy.
"No, get Ed instead," Oswald turned his attention on him.
Ed couldn't take it anymore, but before anything could happen, he took my hand and we ran out of the house. We could hear Penguin yelling from the inside.
"I thought he was your friend?" I grew confused because Oswald was so nice to me before.
"I never liked that bird, he was just acting," Ed pointed out.
At that moment, my phone started to ring.
"Oh no, it's Alfred, do I answer it?" I asked.
"I would," he insisted.
"I didn't exactly tell him I was leaving earlier," I confessed.
"Then I wouldn't, here," he took my phone and threw it to the ground.
"Ed!" I yelled at him.
"I have a plan, and nobody must know, not even your guardian or your brother," he said.
"Did you really have to smash my phone?" I scolded him for that.
"Look, I'm sorry, but we need to do this," he seemed in a hurry.
"Do what?" I still didn't know what was going on.
"Run away with me," he stated. Run away with Edward!? Wow that's ummm, huge.
"Where to?" I committed to his plan.
"Follow me," we then began our journey.
