How did I feel when my parents got murdered? No one ever asked me that. Not even my own brother because he was too shaken up about the whole thing that he couldn't do anything. He had trouble sleeping, eating, and even talking to others. Not to me, and not even to our own butler, Alfred.
My name is Rebecca and Bruce Wayne is my brother. Our parents were murdered last week and I still can't stop crying about it.
Alfred constantly checks on us both, but mostly Bruce since he's suffering way more than I am apparently.
I was too upset to stay in place, so I decided to get out of the manor for a while and go for a walk. I went into downtown Gotham to breathe a little. I know this is the most dangerous place ever, but at this point, I didn't really mind all the crime happening around me. I've already seen worse and have yet to see if anything can top it.
I am a free-spirited child and will do just about anything. I'm not naïve like Bruce is, he may be older than me by a year, but I'm smarter than him. He barely even knows what Gotham is capable of, though honestly neither do I. I mostly just focus on the Gotham City Police Department and what they constantly do. Also with the villains they catch, some are kind of interesting. Scary, but interesting.
What I didn't realize though is that I was completely lost.
I've never been to this part before and it was kind of freaking me out a little bit. As it also turns out, I wasn't alone. A man in a ski mask holding a gun walked up to me.
"Hand me your money!" He shouted at me.
"I don't have any on me," I raised my hands up in defense.
"Then give me that bracelet you're wearing," he bargained. No way in a million years am I giving this creep my favorite bracelet. It was the last thing I got from my mom and I am not going to lose it.
"No," I stated bravely, but it was a huge mistake.
"Kid, I'm not going to ask again, give it to me!" He threatened and pointed his gun right at me. I decided to somewhat be more brave and see if I could attack this guy. Alfred has taught me a little bit about self defense because being a girl in Gotham can be dangerous. I was able to punch him and it left quite an impact.
The gun did go off though and it scared me out of my brave moment.
I was able to knock the guy out at least, but when I said that the gun went off, I didn't expect where it hit. It hit me right in the stomach and I didn't realize. I was bleeding out pretty slowly. I tried my best to walk, but the pain was too great to move. Instead, I whipped out my phone and tried to call the police for help. Before I speak though, I completely fell over and blacked out.
What felt like a while, I woke up in a small looking hospital room. A lady in a doctor's coat was there with me.
"What happened?" I asked her.
"Thank goodness you're awake, you lost quite some blood back there, it's a miracle you made it out," she stated.
"How did you find me?" I wanted to know.
"We were able to trace your phone's location and found you on the brink of death, Jim arrested the crook that shot you," she explained.
"Thank you, I really appreciate it," I laid back down.
"You're very welcome, my name is Dr. Lee Thompkins, if there is anything you need, my door is always open," she then walked out.
Bruce and Alfred then came in.
"Miss. Rebecca, glad to see you're doing well," Alfred smiled at me.
"How are you doing?" Bruce asked.
"I'm alright, I didn't even feel it," I said.
"Us Wayne's are just so unlucky," he stated sadly.
"You aren't wrong, but then again, this is Gotham after all," I told him to try and lighten the mood a little. A man wearing a badge decided to walk in. Geez, I didn't think this many people cared about my well being.
"Nice to meet you Rebecca, my name is detective Jim Gordon, I heard that you were quite a fighter," he smiled at me.
"Thank you Detective," I smiled back.
"If you ever need any more help, you can always call. Lee also told me that you can leave in a couple of hours," he said. A couple of hours in a police department? That certainly is something. I can't walk around, at least I don't think I can. I sat up and felt completely nothing.
"Please lay back down Miss. Rebecca, you need your rest," Alfred told me.
"But I don't feel any pain," I said back.
"She really is strong Alfred," Bruce spoke up, taking my side for once. I was able to step out of bed and noticed I was wearing different clothes instead of a hospital gown or something.
"Would you possibly like a tour of the building?" Jim asked.
"Yes please!" I said excitedly.
"Well you've already seen the Medical Examination Room because that's where we are now, this is where Lee works," he pointed out. Then he walked me out and I saw all the busy cops working at their desks. We went up some steps and Jim led me to his desk where another detective was sitting on the other side.
"This is my partner, Harvey Bullock," he said.
"Pleasure," Harvey tipped his hat with a smile. I waved at him and then Jim led me to a few other rooms. I saw the Files Annex, the outside of the Captain's office, and many other cool places. Except for the morgue, which was where we were now.
I didn't like this room at all since it was filled with dead bodies. I only took a peek through the door because I didn't want to fully step in. Jim noticed this gesture and decided to move on from that.
"Sorry, I know most people don't like this room." Once we made it back to the main corridor, someone urgently ran up to Jim.
"Jim, sorry to interrupt your tour, but we have an emergency and we really need you to investigate," she told him and handed him some files.
"Oh, sure Captain, umm," he started scanning the room and found the person he was looking for.
"Hey Ed, do you mind showing Rebecca here where you work? You know, show her a little bit about forensics?" He asked a dorky looking man in a gray lab goat. He was kind of cute though.
"Sure Detective," he smiled and then looked at me with curiosity in his eyes. He led me to his office and it was very dimly lit.
"My name is Edward Nygma and I work in the forensics department, basically figuring out how someone died," he stated, yet it also looked like he was going to drop the files he was holding.
I couldn't help but ask, "Um, Mr. Nygma, are you alright?"
"Right as rain," he didn't look fine. He then stopped what he was doing and looked right at me.
"So what happened to you exactly?" He wanted to know.
"Got in a little accident, was being robbed, defended myself, and didn't realize I was shot," I answered him. He looked at me with awe.
"Fascinating," he stated. I smiled at him.
"Do you like working here?" I decided to ask him a question to make it fair.
"It has its ups and downs," he answered truthfully.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I responded.
"Don't worry about it," after he said that, an idea popped into his head. "Tell me, what has hands but can't clap?" He questioned.
"What?" I grew confused with what he just asked me.
"It's a riddle." he stated. "Do you give up?"
"Wait, let me think for one second," I kept tapping my head to think of the answer. Then it made sense. "A clock," I answered. He smiled.
"Correct," he said and gave me a thumbs up.
"Do you like asking riddles?" I wanted to know.
"I always love solving puzzles and riddles are definitely my forte, so yes I do," he said, but looked away a little in shame.
"I think it's really cool," I stepped forward to put my hand on his shoulder.
"You're really nice," he couldn't help but smile at me again. I really like Edward, but felt bad that he couldn't exactly be himself here. Then Harvey stepped into the room.
"Hey Rebecca, just wanted to let you know that Alfred is looking for you," he said.
"Thank you Detective," I told him and then he left. I then looked at Edward.
"It was very nice to meet you Mr. Nygma, may I visit you sometime?" I asked him.
"Nobody's ever wanted to visit me before, sure!" He was pretty happy. I went in for a slight hug and then left him. He really is a sweet man.
I found Alfred and Bruce by the door and we headed back to the manor.
"Did you enjoy your little tour?" Alfred curiously asked.
"Yes, it was amazing!" I beamed. "I liked getting to know Mr. Nygma more, he's a really nice guy."
"I hear he's a little weird," Bruce spoke up.
"But we all are," I told him.
"No, he's more out of his mind crazy," Bruce corrected me.
"Well I don't care about that, I think he's great just the way he is," I argued. Bruce rolled his eyes and left the room. "Well someone's a little bitter," I said aloud for Alfred to hear.
"Oh don't mind Master Bruce, he's still a little cranky from earlier," he reassured me.
"I'll bet," I retorted and then headed to my room.
