Chapter Thirty
"Oh, I've never felt so alive!" Esme cackled in Delphine's voice. I couldn't believe that this was happening. Delphine was no longer the sweet girl that she once was. Instead, she was possessed by the most evil creature known to Mermaids. "Delphine, don't do this! Please!" Veronica begged. Delphine just cackled like seeing our pain was an amusing joke. "Pathetic child, I'm not Delphine! Now, give me the trident, unless you want Rose to scratch the hell out of you," she growled.
"SWIM AWAY!" I shouted. The others complied, and we hid behind large, white stone pillars that surrounded the throne room. I held onto the trident as tight as I could, hoping that Delphine would not try to sneak on me and snatch the trident. "What are we supposed to do?" Violet asked. "We can't let her have this. We need to keep her distracted, so we can use this to extract Esme from Delphine's body," I answered.
It may have seemed impossible, but it was the only way to save Delphine without having to hurt her. If we did any damage to Delphine's body, Esme wouldn't feel the pain, but Delphine would. "We can't try to hurt her. We'll hurt Delphine instead if we do," I shouted to the others over Delphine's fit of evil laughter. "That seems like a very complex plan!" Klaus replied. I looked down at the trident, and I knew that in order to keep Delphine distracted long enough, we would have to go in different directions but also avoid Rose and Emily at all costs.
I explained to the others about the diversion, and they all seemed to agree with the plan. I silently counted to three and came out of my hiding spot and swam as fast as I could around the throne room, and watched as the others came out of their hiding spots as well. Violet and Sunny went in one direction, while Klaus and Quigley went another way. "You think swimming in different directions is going to distract me, your wrong!" Delphine shouted. Suddenly a small ball of light blue appeared in her hand, and she threw it in my direction, but luckily I dodged it before it hit me.
Delphine kept throwing the small balls in my direction while I looked down and saw the other were getting closer and closer to her. I knew that she was going to keep throwing the balls of light in hopes that I would drop the trident so she could take it. But I wasn't going to let her. Without a second thought, I called out Veronica's name and threw the trident to her, and she caught it in her hands. Delphine stopped throwing the balls of light at me, and I watched as Veronica started swimming as well and threw the trident to Klaus.
Klaus did the same and threw it to Isadora, and the game of hot potato had continued for a while until the trident made it back to me. Delphine growled in anger and frustration and swam towards me, not giving me enough time to think fast. "Give. It. To. Me." She growled as she tried to pull the trident away from me. "No, Delphine, you must fight the urge, come back to me," I begged as I pulled the trident towards me.
She had a tight grip on the trident that was stronger than I expected. Every time I would pull the trident towards me, she somehow mustered enough strength to pull it towards her and cause my grip to loosen. "You cannot defeat me! I will destroy you and your precious legacy," Delphine snarled. It hit me deep, hearing Esme say that in the voice of the girl who I would give my life to save, and my grip on the trident began to show it.
"My, touch a nerve, did I?" she taunted. She yanked on the trident one more time, and it flew out of my hands and into hers. "At last! The trident is mine!" She swam down to the center of the throne room and plunged the trident into the ground. Esme was zapped out of Delphine's body, and Delphine hit the ground, falling unconscious.
A bright blue light came out of the trident as the moonlight shone brightly on the trident, filling it with power. "You won't get away with this, Esme!" I shouted. She wickedly glared at me, and with one swift movement, she threw half of my friends out of the throne room and covered the door with large rocks preventing them from coming in.
"Are you guy's okay?" I asked, quickly swimming down to the blocked door. "We're fine. We're going to try to find another way in. Veronica's still in there!" Klaus answered. I looked behind me, and I could see her hiding behind one of the white stone pillars with a look of fear spread across her face. "Arthuas, be careful in there!" Duncan said. "Don't worry. I will. And I'll protect Veronica and Delphine," I promised before turning to face Esme, getting ready for round two of the battle.
