Chapter 48: Valt and Robin
Yes, finally Lui doesn't get a turn, yadda yadda yadda, but whatever. This is the last match of the season, so I hope I did a good job on it! Please comment and vote if you think it's good! ty!
OKAY ON WITH THE STORYYYYYYY
Robin:
She tapped her foot impatiently against the cool marble floor. Nika waited beside her with Shu. The albino wore a look of extreme impatience on his face as he paced with nervous energy. Nervous energy? Jeez. Phoenix was laughing her tail off at the expression on his face while Robin was trying to figure out how to get Shu to the stadium on time.
"I'll take care of this," she finally told her brother. "But clearly Valt needs you, so get outta here."
'Here,' as Robin had told Shu, was an airport. Specifically, a very nice airport. One with fancy marble floors and painted glass and well dressed people walking around with their noses turned up.
"If you go now, you might be able to catch Valt," Nika said. "Or not. He's fast."
Shu needed no more convincing. He sprinted outside in about two seconds. Robin heard yelps of surprise coming from people, and the insistent ringing of a bike bell.
"Also, why are half the Aois here?" She added curiously. Mrs. Aoi and Nika were standing together patiently at the stairs. Took was nowhere to be found.
"We're waiting for Dad!" Nika cheered. "He's coming today! Probably on the same flight as your parents."
Robin winced. "I'm sorry for your loss."
Mrs. Aoi frowned slightly, tilting her head in a bird like fashion. "What do you mean? They're nice, right? Your parents?"
She shrugged and tilted her hand from side to side. "You'll see."
Right on cue, the first people emerged from the top of the stairs. Mrs. Aoi pumped her fists excitedly. Now Robin saw where Valt's incredible energy came from.
Nika suddenly gasped and pointed. "There he is! Finally!"
Robin gave her the derp look. "It's been five seconds."
She stopped speaking when her companions ran over to the man at Valt Speed. He had dark blue hair with the same Valt headband, a black suit and tie, and an airlines pin, which meant he was a pilot. His chocolate eyes fairly glowed with happiness when he saw his family. A good person, Robin deduced, checking his warm aura so much like her friend's.
The next people to the stairs made her good mood flee, and she swore silently. Her parents.
To prevent anything bad from going down concerning Shu, she raced to the top and smiled charmingly like her mother had taught her. She had also taught her to conn men and wear hundreds of different faces, along with manipulate people into buying stuff for her. The white-haired girl knew that she didn't really love her father. It was a mutually beneficial pairing, made to create the best business in the world with... benefits.
Some happened to be two children running their house for them.
"Hello mother, father. Welcome back from your trip. May I get your suitcases?" The professional mask the businesslike parents preferred slipped on seamlessly.
Her father, a man with close cropped blue hair inclined his head slightly. "Please do. See to it." His crisp grey suit matched the indifferent expression in his brown eyes.
Sweet jasmine perfume reached Robin, and she tried not to gag. She hated jasmine perfume, or perfume at all. Yet Mother used jasmine shampoo, wore jasmine flowers in her long purple hair, even wore diamond jasmine bracelets.
"Where's Shigure, darling?" The sugared voice that she always used to charm enemies was suddenly turned towards her. It took a lot of effort not to snap. Besides, using a true name in front of a whole airport? Not cool.
"I told him to support his friend," Robin told her with the same polite, detached voice. "I would take the punishment."
A pale hand gently traced the side of her face, and she shivered with fear. Her mom was known in business as the Serpent. Less polite people (Robin included) called he the Flytrap. She excelled in luring CEO's of competing companies in, seducing them, then flawlessly changing from sweet honey to poison. Deadly.
"Oh, Azura. You should know not to take a punishment when you don't even know what it is, sweetie."
Robin flinched, her real name from a sinister mouth causing her pain. The luggage's (Why were they so heavy?) dug into her skin.
"I apologize. However, if Shu doesn't want to be found somewhere, it's near impossible to find him. I suggest waiting until the finals are over."
Her father, the "Reaper" nodded. "Of course. Meanwhile, we will go back to our apartment and talk about your performance in the tournament. Come along."
Mrs. Aoi looked like she wanted to intervene, and Nika looked even angrier. The dad who looked so much like Valt looked relaxed, which she recognized as the calm mask. Before they could say anything, Robin hastily put a finger over her mouth. If they were say anything, she would be in some deep s- um, trouble.
Nika couldn't take a hint.
She ran in front of them at the door, arms held out on either side of her. "That was so mean! How can you be so rude to your own daughter?"
"Neko," Robin warned quietly, purposely getting her name wrong. "You should-"
"No! You shouldn't have to put up with this and you don't need to protect me!" Nika faced her parents again, who looked extremely amused by the outburst. "Robin did the best she could! How could you want more than that?"
The best I could? No.
I failed of my own doing.
Flash.
"Did you hear what they say about the weird girl? The one with the white boys haircut?"
"Yeah! I heard she went to a mental hospital!"
"Freak! You don't belong here!"
All the kids in first grade, gathered around her, laughing, pointing. Their shadows grew longer and longer. That was when Xander had saved her, but he wasn't always around. They laughed at her, hurling sticks and stones and words that burned more than anything.
Flash.
Her body giving out, the barely visible mark on Lui's shoulder. His angry yells as she collapsed, will flooding out of her. She had suffered patiently through everything Lui could deal out against her. She was about to win, Lui was about to break, but she messed up. I was too weak.
Flash.
She was thrown to the ground painfully as Yugo attacked. "You'll never become stronger like that. Try again."
Pain snapped at her arm as Robin stood slowly, and was promptly thrown again. Hurt made her nearly scream until she forced it to the back of her head and stood up again. This time, Ukyo joined the fight, darting in and out of the shadows, randomly tapping the back of her neck or a pressure point. Thank goodness he was being gentle, unlike the the six year old Yugo.
Xander came in and stopped, surprised at this. He glared at the two, and they backed off. "Don't worry," he said. "You just started. You just don't know enough yet."
Those words, they were so kind.
So kind, but somehow so cruel.
"We don't have to explain to you," the Reaper said. Startled at his approach, Nika took a step back. Robin blinked, coming out of torturous thoughts and back to slightly less painful reality.
"Look, sweetie," the Flytrap said condescendingly. "We just want the family name to be honored, not shamed. It's for the best. If they lose, they've shamed the Kurenais."
Robin kept the facade up and pretended the words didn't tear a hole through her.
"Please excuse her," Robin intervened, bowing politely. "She's only five. Neko doesn't understand the importance of who she's talking to."
Nika finally got the hint, that something bad could happen to the Aois if she kept bothering the older Kurenais. She backed up and ran to her parents, who grabbed her hands and left quickly.
"Perhaps someone should teach her better," the Flytrap mused. She almost paled at the thought of the teaching methods the woman could employ. Robin would not allow someone as kind and innocent as Nika to be hurt by anyone. Not as long as she was around. So instead, Robin smiled sweetly, dangerously sharp canines. "Please, allow me. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised."
Good job Robin, just dig that hole a little deeper, yeah?
They returned home in a taxi, her lugging their briefcases, Dad staring out the window, and Mom making eyes at the distracted cab driver. Yep. Good old dysfunctional family right there.
She just hoped Shu had made it.
Valt:
Lui was busy trying to freak me out, I was busy ignoring him. Yeah, that's me. A pro at ignoring people. Skills, huh?
Anyways, I was ignoring Lui, when Valkyrie suddenly screamed, Valt! Check it! The stands!
Instantly forgetting about Lui's irritating comments, I whipped around and madly searched through the spectators. Rideout, Swordflames, Iceblaze, nothing new. Superstars, as shiny as always. That left Beigoma. And the only new face there was...
"SHUUUU!"
Sweaty and tired and desperately struggling for breath, but that was Shu. His white hair was all messed up, well, even more than usual, like he had sprinted from the airport. Then again, considering the speed he had used this morning, I think he biked all the way here.
If you don't get it, picture this. The airport is three and a half miles from the WBBA building. To run that is about forty five minutes if you try really hard. It's my record, anyhow (blame Field Day.) To bike that is usually close to thirty minutes at best. But I spoke to Shu in the waiting room, and I heard airport noises. My match and waiting time was in total about five minutes long.
He biked three and a half miles in five minutes.
My boyfriend is officially crazy.
I gaped at him, and he gave me a smile. "Valt, beat Lui for me!" He yelled.
I grinned and nodded. Anything for my crazy Shu.
"Second battle!"
I backed up to the stairs again, this time doing something else. Hey Valkyrie!
What?
Just how high can that pegasus of yours fly?
She gave me a smile, putting on her helmet. I like your style, Aoi. Let's crush them!
"Three!" I closed my eyes and ran forwards. I felt Lui's subtle energy as he began Nightmare Launch.
"Two!"
"One!" I braced my foot and jumped. Valkyrie carried me twice as high as I could usually jump, but it felt like I jumped under my own power.
"Let it... rip!"
As I expected and hoped, she hit the stadium where I thought Luinor might land. I could see the spirits now, and the dragon barely flew out of the way in time. Valkyrie flew back up on her pegasus, helm glowing with just the faintest bit of my power.
Don't judge me, I was excited.
She almost hit Luinor the third time. Serious skills for Valkyrie. Now she touched down and startled madly chasing the dragon. On the human level, which I could also see, I noted that the two were on the outer rim and my bey was glowing. She was sufficiently charged up for Winged Launch.
"Go for it! Now!"
At the same time, Luinor on the spirit level wrapped its wings around itself, creating a spiked shield. In front, at least. His back was wide open for attack, if Valkyrie's sword could slip between the scales.
No need, she assured me. I do have an idea, though...
WILL YOU JUST USE WINGED LAUNCH ALREADY?
I watched the beyblade shoot around the outer rim and crash into Luinor. Her sword hit the point between the two wings, and on the human level, Valtryek hit Luinor's forge disk.
Lui didn't stand a chance.
That unique sound of Luimor bursting was the best thing I'd heard all day. Other than Shu's voice, of course.
"YAASSS!!!!" I jumped up and down, cheering. On the second bounce, I stumbled and nearly fell on my face. Lui scowled at my antics, but I ignored him, collecting Valkyrie from the stadium. My hands shook, definitely not from fear. I was totally fired up and ready to take Lui down, but something was wrong. I was shivering and the floor was swaying a little. The stadium suddenly had a green and red copy. Valkyrie? W-what's going on?
She looked just as confused as me as she tugged the helmet off her head and pulled her sweaty hair into pigtails. I have no idea. Maybe a side effect of our sync? No, that's not it... I really don't know, but you're going to have to power through it.
How can I power through it when I can't even hold my launcher still? And the stadium is green! What is going on here!
Lui was staring at me. He looked straight at my eyes and tilted his head slightly, violet orbs narrowing. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, and was just forming an escape plan before he said, "I'm calling a time out."
WHAT?
He looked at me again and nodded slightly towards the stands. Then Lui turned and left the stage, and I went the opposite way.
In the waiting room, I put down my launcher and stared at my hands. They were shaking badly, and I scowled at them. "Hold still."
They did not respond. Mean hands.
"Yo, Valt!"
Honcho. But only the bladers participating were allowed in the waiting room. I turned around and saw the whole beyblade club here, complete with Shu. To be honest, I wanted to see what they looked like when I was synced, but I couldn't. I wouldn't know until I was battling.
"What're you guys doing here?" I asked. "And how'd you even get in?"
Robin grinned. "I talked to the guards. I'm very convincing."
Daigo rolled his eyes. "Valt. Stop it. You're using way too much energy for your jump boost. Hold still."
I couldn't, and he sighed in frustration. "Shu, your turn. I'm done."
Shu facepalmed. "Hold out your hands." He dropped two small bags into my hands. They were full of something square and heavy.
When they hit my hand, I discovered that they were also very very cold.
"WAAHH!!!! They're like ice!" I protested. I tried to drop them, but Shu placed his hands over mine and the bags.
"It is ice," he told me. "They'll make your hands steadier."
"Why were you being such an idiot!" Wakiya yelled at me, shaking my shoulders. "Are you going to waste all your energy like that again?"
Honcho broke in. "Actually, I'm just surprised you even had that much energy. The launch kinda looked like Robin's, and she's a descendant. How the heck did you even do that?"
Valkyrie, I'm the worst liar ever. I NEED HEELPPP! How do you help me!
I think I can talk in your voice? I'll give it a shot. "Superskillz!" she yelled at top volume. "Also, can I go back now?"
Valkyrie smirked, then let me talk again. I gratefully thanked her while listening to everyone else. "Of course," Shu said. "Just... do your best. It doesn't really matter if you win anymore. You proved Lui wrong."
There was that pressure taken off me, but I still wanted the victory. Duh. Didn't everyone want the victory? Right, time to go! But first...
I jumped and kissed Shu, then ran away towards the elevator, yelling, "I'll win this for you guys!"
The moment the elevator doors closed, I heard a super quiet sound of clothes moving. That was my only warning.
Lui hurtled out of the shadows, shoving me against the wall with his hands. I did not want to be stuck against the wall in a tiny elevator with Lui, so I pushed back as hard as I could. Somehow, I pushed him back a few steps before he released me. Surprised, I nearly faceplanted on the ground before stumbling and recovering.
Lui grinned at me, and for once, it didn't seem scary. "Just needed to make sure you're at full strength. For when I crush you."
There was a ding, and the doors opened. Lui stepped out, but I reached out and grabbed his boa. Oh my gosh, that was the fluffiest thing I've felt ever! Nice and warm, and it smelled good, like beybread. "Hey, wait!"
He yanked the fluffy scarf away from me. "What?" he snapped. "What is it?"
"Why'd you call the break?" I asked, ready to run for my life if the situation called for it.
Lui turned his head towards me, and his hateful purple eyes softened for a millisecond. "I owed you for yesterday."
Yesterday: The day I practiced, and also the day I convinced Hanami to give us a break. I had said that it was for the last day of school, but after the match with Shu, I couldn't help but pity Lui. He looked ready to drop, and I wanted to face Lui at full power. Otherwise, what's the point of battling them?
"We're even now," he added, his voice back to cold and unyielding. "So don't expect any favors."
I couldn't stop myself from smiling. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
I seemed to be the first person Lui had any respect for. And honestly? That alone was a victory.
"Welcome back to the final round!" Hanami announced. "After a little break, the final round and the deciding match of the championship is about to begin!"
Lui grinned and bared his shark teeth at the same time. Now since I had seen Luinor's spirit, they actually looked more like dragon teeth to me. He held out the blue and white bey. "I've gotta admit, you've given Luinor a solid workout so far," he said, a very tiny hint of teasing in his voice. What? Teasing? What is up with Lui?
I held up Valkyrie. "Same with Valtryek and I! And we're ready to beat you!"
You almost said Valkyrie! My beyblade singsonged.
Be quiet and get ready for the awesomeness to begin!
She was silent, apart from a sadistic smile. It quickly disappeared behind her helmet, along with her blue hair and bright orange eyes.
Something caught my attention. "Good luck, sweetie!"
Mom!
Another voice. One I hadn't heard in a while, one of a specific pilot who I loved very much. "You've got this! Keep going!"
DAD!!! YASS!!
"We're going to win," I repeated, more confident this time.
"We'll see," Lui replied.
Sync.
I started backing up as far as I could. This was the last match, so I had to pull out all the stops. My foot touched the back of the stairs and kept going. At the top of the stairs, I stopped. My eyes shut, and I zeroed in mentally on the stadium. Lui's menacing energy flared around him as the call was sounded. I yelled along as I started running.
"Three!" Keep sprinting with my eyes closed and pray I don't faceplant down the stairs.
"Two!"
"One!" I braced my foot and jumped as high as I could. My eyes were squeezed shut, but I heard another whoosh as well. Lui must have jumped, too, and I could tell it was as high as me.
"Let it... rip!" I released my beyblade at forty five degrees with all the strength I had.
I opened my eyes as I was falling. Luinor and Valkyrie were falling at the same speed their bladers were, and about to collide in midair. To make sure I didn't faceplant or brake my foot, I turned so I was standing in air. I hit the floor hard, but it didn't hurt me much. Lui seemed to have the same landing, and we were immediately focusing on our beyblades.
The dragon and the valkyrie hit the stadium at the same time, almost colliding, then pushing off and jumping back into the air. Luinor's tail hit Valkyrie's sword, then they sprang apart and hit the stadium again on opposite sides. She instantly sped across the outer edge, chasing Luinor. I switched back to the human level of the battle and saw the two beyblades marking up the stadium with scratches. They collided on the outer edge, energy pouring off them and throwing both Lui and I backwards. We scrambled to our feet and ran back just as the two blades sprang apart.
"Valkyrie! Winged Launch!"
She crashed into two of the walls, sparks careening off of her and the energy trail.
"Lost Spiral!"
Luinor began to glow, and blazed towards the center, the front glowing more. On the spirit level, the wings were wrapped around himself for added protection. The two beyblades got closer, closer, then I was seeing through Valkyrie's eyes again. Our sword was out offensively in front of us, ready to parry or stab or slash at the dragon's hide. Our enemy glowed with power, and we collided. For a few seconds, it was just a storm of glowing attacks and defense and more attacks, and we broke apart, him moving sluggishly, us refreshed with more energy. We sped at him, ready to destroy him finally.
Our pegasus stumbled over a crack, a small one, and collapsed. We fell with him, and I remembered this crack was the one made in the first match.
I was yanked from our sync, and saw Valkyrie had burst. I stared at this scene for what felt like an hour. After everything, we failed.
The ref broke the silence. "Burst finish for Lost Luinor, Lui Shirosagi wins the ma--"
"Stop!"
I hadn't realized how quiet Lui had been until he yelled that word. He should have said something rude or something, not gape at the pieces like I had been doing.
Now, he stormed forward and looked extremely angry. "I want a rematch! I'm not going to accept victory over a freak accident! Valt!"
I blinked, realizing he was asking my permission for another round. Normally, I would have said yes, because I love battling. But Lui had won fairly, and now our roles were switched. He was asking for the battle, and I was the one with the answer.
"No."
He blinked. "What?"
"You won that match fairly." I smiled at him while I collected Valkyrie. "Besides, I wouldn't feel right about it, and there are plenty of other times I'll get a shot at beating you."
He groaned and rolled his eyes as the results were spread across the whole of Japan, and probably the world. "Lui Shirosagi has taken the championship for the fifth time in a row!"
He won, and even though he had destroyed Shu's bey, I didn't feel too bad about failing. I mean, I still cried about it when I got home, and dissected my performance and practiced a ton after that, but I thought I had done the best I could.
Besides, Lui now respects me, and really, tell me that isn't an achievement.

Yoyoyo! Robin here as you probably already know. This is NOT the last chapter of the book, there will be one or two more!
