TWENTY SIX
The phone rang in my hand, and I almost dropped it. I didn't know why I was so afraid; it was just DP. On the fourth ring, I answered the call and put it next to my ear. Neither of us spoke, neither of us made a noise. I heard him take a deep breath. "Hello, LP."
His voice was low and deep, warming me up on the inside. There was a part of me that felt like I knew his voice, but I couldn't place it. "Hi, DP."
"That is so not how I picture your voice," DP said, chuckling slightly. His laughter made me smile. "Yet, it's exactly you."
"My God, you're just as weird as you are over text," I said, snorting. "I had hoped it was just a facade you put on over text, but I guess not."
"Hey! That's rude," DP said, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "You're just as mean as you are over text."
"Nah, I'm not mean." I grinned and said, "I'm just blunt."
"Sometimes blunt is mean." I rolled my eyes. "I kind of like talking to you this way. Maybe we could do it more often."
"Maybe," I said, nodding. I leaned back on my bed and settled in. I pulled my favorite blue blanket over me and said, "What if I said I wanted to meet you?" There was a gasp on the other end of the line and then silence. "DP? Are you still there?"
"Yeah, I'm still here," he replied quickly. "Did I hear you correctly? Did you say you wanted to meet me?"
"Well, yeah," I said before I could convince myself otherwise. "We've been talking for a couple months over text. I think I'm ready to meet you."
"I never thought this day would come!" In the background, I could hear creaking and thudding noises. His breath became labored.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm dancing, LP." The noises continued for a couple more minutes until there was silence. "When do you want to meet up, then?"
"I'm not sure," I said, furrowing my brow. "It should be sometime soon, but not in December, since I'm going back home for Christmas."
"You're going home for Christmas?"
"Yeah. I'm not sure if my siblings will be there. It may just be my parents and me."
"Okay," DP said. "You text me the details, okay?"
"Okay." I smiled and closed my eyes. "Goodbye, DP."
"Goodbye LP. Talk to ya later."

Charlotte grumbled in my ear. "Why are we up this early?"
A grin graced my face as I said, "It's finally our time to do the Senior Snowball Fight."
Charlotte frowned, pulling her covers closer to her face. "Why did it have to snow in November? Why couldn't it have been unconventionally warm?"
"Come on," I whined, sitting down next to her. I shoved her shoulder. "It's going to be fun!"
"You say that now. Watch us get jinxed."
"I'll make sure we're on the same team."
Charlotte groaned and threw her covers over her head. "Why can't we live in Florida?"
"Stop with the questions, start getting ready." I pulled back her covers and shoved her out of bed. She fell onto the floor with a thud, and I said, "There's more where that came from."
"I don't like you, Luna," Charlotte said, glaring up at me. Slowly, she stood up, and I pointed to her snow pants hanging from a chair. "I can see, you know."
"Says the one with glasses," I said, snorting. "Hurry up. I don't want to be late. Paul's going to be here in ten minutes, so we all can go together."
"You recruited him, too?" Charlotte said, sliding her snow pants on over her pajama pants. "Hey, where's my winter jacket?"
"Where you last left it."
"Which is where?"
Walking over to the closet, I grabbed her jacket from its spot on the hanger. "Here it is!"
"Okay, how are you a morning person?" Charlotte asked, frowning. She grabbed the jacket from me, shaking her head. "I don't like peppy-morning-person-Luna."
I laughed and said, "The only reason why I like mornings is because it is so peaceful. People aren't up to annoy me."
"That's actually a great reason."
"I am a tad bit smart."
A knock on the door interrupted our friendly banter. I opened it to reveal Paul standing at the other end, a huge grin on his face. "Are you ladies ready for the famous Senior Snowball Fight?"
"Not you too!" Charlotte said, groaning. "Stop being so peppy!"
"What's gotten into her?" Paul whispered to me.
"She's not a morning person."
He nodded and walked forward, giving Charlotte a quick hug. "Let's get going," he said, handing her a pair of gloves. I shoved a hat over her unruly hair, and we headed out of my room.
That morning, I got up early just to get ready for this event. Winter was my favorite season, and this whole event was basically famous in our little town of Evergreen. Every year, I heard stories of the game and couldn't wait to finally try it out for myself. Last year's group of seniors had an epic fight, according to my ex-boyfriend. Though, I couldn't really trust his word on anything, so I wasn't really sure if it was epic.
"This year, it's going to be amazing," Paul said, bringing me back to reality. "We have a smaller group of seniors, and I heard that the teachers slightly changed the rules since we are so small. I think you can get hit twice before getting out."
"I don't even want to be hit once," Charlotte muttered, her face bunched up in a frown. "Is there a way I can sit out?"
Paul and I glanced at each other over Charlotte's head. He slightly shook his head, so I said, "No, there isn't."
"Darn it."
"It's going to be fun, I promise," Paul said happily.
We all went silent, and my mind went to DP. I wondered if he was going to do the Senior Snowball Fight. He loved winter too, so I hoped he was doing it. I wanted to see if I could recognize him by just his voice.
Paul held the gym door open for us, and we filed in. Most of our classmates were already in there, sitting in a line on the floor. We made our way to the end of the line, and Charlotte plopped down on the floor.
"Can I take a nap?" she asked, her eyes closing.
"On the gym floor where hundreds of sweaty people played hours of basketball?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.
"Ew, you're right," she said, her eyes popping open. I sat down next to her, and she laid her head on my shoulder. "Goodnight, Luna."
"Nope," I said, pushing her head away from my shoulder. "It's not even that early."
"I always get up at this time," Paul said from my other side. "It's not that bad."
"I don't know how I love you two."
"Me either," I said, laughing. "You can't get rid of us, though."
"Ladies and gentlemen!" a teacher I didn't know yelled from the front of the gym. He had a huge grin on his face. "We are gathered here today for our annual Senior Snowball Fight! I'm sure you've all heard the rumors. We are allowing the twice hit policy this year."
"I told you!" Paul whispered excitedly.
"We advise you all to throw the snowballs at the middle area of the body," the teacher continued on. "Hitting someone in the face could really hurt. Trust me. I know this from personal experience." I laughed quietly, nodding in agreement. My brothers were the worst when it came to snowball fights. My sisters and I always got hit in the face every time we played against them. "I'm sure everyone knows the rules, so we're skipping that right now. Time to split you all up!"
The small senior class stood up slowly, and I watched as a teacher started splitting my classmates onto different teams. They went one by one, making them go to the right or left. "Char," I said quietly. "I'm going to stand behind Paul, so we can be on the same team."
"Great idea," she said, nodding enthusiastically. "Then we can strike up an alliance with Paul."
"Yeah." I turned around and smiled at Paul. "I'm going to move behind you."
"Why?"
"Why not?" I asked, shrugging. I leaned in and said, "You may end up on the same team as Charlotte if you let me move."
"Okay," he said, shrugging. We quickly traded places, and I sighed in relief. I needed to talk to Charlotte alone, and this was the only way to do that. I had a serious dilemma and only Charlotte could help me with it. I should've waited until the snowball fight was over to tell her, but it wouldn't leave my mind no matter what I tried.
I couldn't focus on that anymore since a teacher was coming this way to split Paul, Charlotte, and me up. "You, go to the right," the teacher said to Charlotte. "Boy, go to the left."
Paul turned around with a slight frown and said, "You lied to me, Luna."
Smiling sweetly at him, I said, "I need your girlfriend all to myself, Paul."
Paul only laughed, which was relieving. I thought he'd be mad. The teacher told me to go to the left, and I followed his instructions. Charlotte was waiting for me, a small smile on her face. "I can't believe Paul actually fell for your lie."
"Right?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. "He should be used to us doing that by now."
"So, why do you need me?"
"I have to tell you something."
She grinned and said, "Are you going on a date?"
"Everything I have to tell you doesn't have to revolve around boys," I said, frowning.
"I hear a but coming."
"This particular subject is about a boy."
"Ha, I knew it!" Charlotte said, jumping up and down while clapping. I slapped my hand over her mouth and glared at her.
"We are going to head outside!" another teacher yelled to our team. "Once we get out there, we will show you your area and where you can and cannot go."
"I'll tell you in a little bit," I said to her as we were shepherded out into the cold. The snow drifted in large tufts, which was good. Charlotte and I could hide behind them to try to stay in. "I just love it out here."
"I hate it."
"Lighten up, Char," I said, laughing. "It's a nice day out."
"Only morning people say that."
I shook my head, a huge smile on my face. Charlotte's bad mood would not bring mine down. "Okay, it's nearly time to start," Mr. Oliver said, coming out of nowhere. He wasn't even in the gym, so where in the world did he come from? "Once you hear the whistle, it is time to start."
A sharp noise hit my ears, and Mr. Oliver ran off to the side because he definitely didn't want to get hit by flying snowballs. "Time to begin," I whispered to Charlotte. Leading her to one of the many drifts, I plopped down into the snow. Chills traveled up my spine because of the cold snow. "Do you want to make the snowballs while I throw them?"
"No," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. She stood over me with a frown on her face. "I did not want to do this in the first place."
"Charlotte, you sound like a two year old."
"You and Paul forced me out here," she continued on, "so I'll just let myself get out."
I sighed and grabbed her wrist. "I'm sorry, okay? I wanted to do this with you. You're my best friend, after all."
"Buttering me up won't work."
I let out a little laugh and said, "I hate how you know me so well." She continued standing, and I watched as snowballs flew all around, one nearly nailing her in the face. "If you sit down, you won't get hit in the head." She sat down and threw an arm around my shoulders. "Please make your best friend some snowballs so she can hit people with them."
"Only if you do something for me," she said, sniffing. I nodded, so she said, "Hit Paul for me."
"Okay." Charlotte got busy, so I stood up slightly and looked at the other team. They still had a lot of teammates, and I noticed Paul whipping snowballs in many different directions. His throwing arm moved in a blur just like in cartoons. Okay, how did he get that many snowballs done in a short time? "I see him."
"Perfect," she said, grinning as I sat down. "Now, talk to me about whatever you need to talk about."
I wished she didn't mention it so early on in the game. I had hoped she forgot about it, but I was wrong. "Is it normal to like someone you've never met before?"
"Do you like DP?" Charlotte asked excitedly. "Because I can totally set you up with him!"
"What?" I asked, frowning. My heart thudded against my chest at that thought. "You know him?"
Her eyes went wide. She looked like she said too much. "No, I don't."
I hit her arm and said, "You do know him!"
Charlotte shook her head frantically. Her blonde hair swung under her hat. "Nope."
"Why aren't you telling me who he is?"
"He swore me to secrecy."
"Great," I muttered, dropping my head. Anger rushed through me at the thought of her keeping something from me. We never kept secrets from each other. "Give me a freaking snowball. I need to hit someone."
She silently handed me one, and I stood up, searching for Paul. He seemed like a good target. He probably knew who DP was, too. I brought my arm back, my eyes locking onto my target. I threw and watched in satisfaction as it hit Paul on the stomach. "In your face!" I yelled. He glanced my way, giving me a dirty look. I didn't feel dirty, though; I felt great.
Dropping back down, I said, "I'm better now."
"I wanted to tell you, I promise," Charlotte said sincerely. "But he told me that he wanted it to still be a secret."
"Does he know who I am?"
"No."
"Okay," I said, nodding. That made me feel a little better. "Okay."
"So, you were saying you might like him," Charlotte said, grinning. "He's a good guy."
"I don't know if I like him," I said softly. I didn't meet her eyes at all. "I'm happier when we text each other, but that doesn't mean anything. Right?"
"I don't know, Luna. I think liking someone is different for everyone."
I sighed and said, "There's something about him that makes me feel like I'm on cloud nine."
"I'm happy for you."
Smiling, I nodded. "Anyway, did you send in your college applications?"
"Yeah. Did you?"
"Of course!" I glanced down at the growing pile of snowballs, and the roar from our classmates came back to me. "I think I'm going to hit people now."
"Can I join you?" she asked. "I made a lot of snowballs."
"Sure," I said, shrugging. I grabbed the first snowball and stood up, gazing at the other side. I spotted Brennen facing forward and a grin appeared on my face. I threw my snowball at him, hitting him in the back. He turned around with a frown on his face. "Char, hit Brennan."
"Yes, ma'am!" She stood up and threw her snowball at him, hitting him straight in the face. My mouth opened in shock.
"You go girl!" I said, high fiving Charlotte. She giggled.
"I'm on your team!" Brennen yelled, but he didn't stop me from laughing. Charlotte and I doubled over because we were laughing so hard. "God, I don't like you two."
"You hurt my best friend, you get nailed in the face with a snowball," Charlotte said, wrapping an arm around my waist. "For your information, we don't like you either."
Before I could say anything, something white came whirling at Charlotte's face. There was a split second where I had to make a choice. Jumping in front of her, I took the snowball instead. I landed into the snow with a thud and yelled dramatically, "Avenge me!"
"Luna!" Charlotte said, laughing. She dropped down next to me and said, "You didn't have to do that for me."
"I had to," I said seriously. "It was coming at your face."
She giggled and said, "I love you, Luna."
"I love you, too." I scrambled over to the other snowballs we had and grabbed a handful. There were people I needed to hit. "Are you ready, Charlotte?"
She gave me a grin, and we stood up, throwing whatever we had at the other team. Even though we may have gotten out during that game, I knew Charlotte actually enjoyed the snowball fight. But more importantly, I knew she meant well when keeping DP's identity a secret. I couldn't stay mad at her for one little secret.
