TWENTY

The past couple of days have been so lonesome without DP texting me. I didn't understand why he just up and left. That wasn't the first time he's done it, either. Does he not like me? Or is there something totally wrong with him?

My mind didn't focus on that thought once I walked into the cafeteria. The warm aroma of tacos distracted me. Walking over to the table where Charlotte and Paul sat, I said, "Guys, it's Taco Tuesday!"

"Yeah, yeah," Charlotte said, waving her hand. Her eyes were focused on Paul's phone, watching something. She already had her food sitting in front of her, but it was discarded.

"What're you watching?"

"Funny fails."

That made sense. She always watched those when she was bored. I dropped my backpack on my seat and headed toward one of the four lines for food. The line was slow, but that was okay. I needed to think about DP and the situation we were in. It's been a little over a month since he first texted me, and we were still talking. That was totally unlike me. I was not one for constantly using my phone, and here I was, texting him daily.

It wasn't like he was crazy, though. And he went to the same school as me! Maybe there was a reason why he texted me, other than being number neighbors. There was something about him that was intriguing, and I couldn't just stop texting him. He had become very important to me.

"Are you going to move?"

I glanced behind me to see a long line glaring at me. I quickly said sorry and slid my tray toward the lunch lady. She set two taco shells onto my tray, and I moved on to the toppings. For one taco, I put ground turkey, lettuce, and cheese on it. For the other one, I put cheese and chicken on it. I quickly paid for my lunch and headed back to the lunch table. Sitting down, I said, "Char, are you going to eat lunch?"

"After this video," she said distractedly. I laughed and shook my head, knowing she wouldn't eat much more. Before I started eating, I grabbed the list I made a couple days ago about who DP could be. "What are you doing, Luna?"

"I'm seeing if there is anyone on this list who's in our lunch."

"Wait, why do you have a list of guys in our grade?" Paul asked, frowning at me. His eyes widened. "Are you going to kill them?"

Laughing, I said, "Thanks, Paul. No, I'm trying to figure out who is texting me."

"What's their name?"

"I don't know."

"Then how are you supposed to figure out who they are if you don't know their name?" Paul said, cocking his head to the side.

"I know their initials."

"That makes more sense. What's their initials?"

"DP."

"I know a couple DP's," Paul said, and my heart soared. Of course! I should've asked him before making my list! He was very popular.

"Tell me!"

"Okay," he said, nodding. "There's Drake Peyton, my roommate, Daniel Porter, Derek Principe, Daisy Piper -"

"It's not a girl," I said, frowning. "Who was the first person you said?"

"Drake Peyton."

"He's not on my list," I said, furrowing my eyebrows. I quickly wrote his name down and said, "Do you have any of their numbers?"

"Only Derek's," he said, shrugging. His eyes slid to Charlotte, and a small smile graced his face. "Charlotte, my phone is going to die."

"Too bad," she said. Paul grabbed his phone and turned it off. "Hey! I was watching something."

"You should eat," Paul said, pulling her tray forward. He placed his hand on her arm, rubbing it. She seemed to melt under his gaze.

"Fine," she grumbled, rolling her eyes. "You are too cute for me to go against your wishes."

"Thanks, baby," he said, kissing the side of her head. "Luna, do you want to compare Derek's number with DP's number?"

"You'll give her your phone, but I can't watch anymore videos?" Charlotte asked, sitting straight up. "You, sir, are rude."

I laughed, taking Paul's phone. He had Derek's contact pulled up, so I went to DP's. My heart sank. Of course it wasn't the right number. "Thanks, Paul, but that isn't the same number."

"Well, I tried."

"How don't you have your roommate's number?" I asked him, digging into my tacos. "Charlotte and I do."

"You two are best friends," Paul said, shrugging. "Drake and I aren't close at all. To be honest, I'm not a fan of him. He's really quiet and keeps to himself all the time."

"And that's a bad thing?" I asked, frowning. "I'm quiet. Do you not like me?"

"I do like you," Paul said, backtracking. He looked a little nervous as I glanced at him. "I've gotten to know you through Charlotte. Drake doesn't do anything to become friends."

I nodded and went back to my food. There was one thought sticking out in my mind, but I couldn't place it. I felt like I should have known who DP was, but it wasn't clicking.
