SIX

The bell rang, and I settled into my seat in AP Psych. I threw my backpack to the ground and put my computer on my desk. Hopefully, the only thing we were doing today is a project on the computer. That's what Mr. Oliver usually did, and I always depended on it for a little familiarity.

"Good morning, class," Mr. Oliver said cheerily. "Today, we are doing things a little differently. Since we are learning about the brain, I want you guys to make something. That's all I'm telling you as of right now."

Everyone in the class groaned, me included. When he made us do a project, it was always drawn out and confusing. I was also partnered with people I didn't really like, so it wasn't like I had fun. Some days, I wondered why I liked this class so much.

I watched as Mr. Oliver walked over to his desk, and my gaze landed on Brennan. He was in mid-laugh, and I nearly melted. His fair skin complemented his smile, and he had crinkles next to his eyes, signaling that he smiled a lot. His green eyes were shining with some unidentifiable joy that I wasn't aware of. I wanted to be aware of what he was so happy about.

"I will be partnering you all up, so don't get excited about picking your own partners," Mr. Oliver said. My heart started racing. What if he decided to partner Brennan and me together? I'd probably embarrass myself, which I did on a daily basis. A kid on the other side of the classroom raised his hand, and Mr. Oliver said, "Yes, Konnor?"

"What are we supposed to be making?"

"I'm going to be partnering you all first before explaining what you have to do." Mr. Oliver grinned at Konnor and said, "Let me take attendance, and I'll split you all up. You all know the drill. I shouldn't have to explain myself. I take attendance, partner you all up, and not allow guys to use your notes."

Of course he wouldn't explain what we were doing. I wasn't able to study before he made us do the project without our notes. I placed my computer on the floor since I probably wouldn't be able to use it. Leaning back in my chair, I let out a quiet sigh. I hardly had any friends in this class, and I doubted Mr. Oliver would put friends together, anyway.

I fidgeted with my skirt when Mr. Oliver stood up with his clipboard of the class roster. I hated doing group projects because no one I was partnered with ever did the work. I always ended up doing all of the work, which just ruined projects for me. Mr. Oliver started naming off my classmates' names. No one got up yet to move to their partners. My ears piqued when I heard him say Brennan's name. "Brennan, you will be with Luna."

My heart stopped when Brennan glanced over at me. He gave me a short smile, and I smiled back hesitantly. Soon enough, Mr. Oliver was done partnering everyone up, so I slowly headed over to Brennan. My heart picked up its pace the closer I got to him. "Hey, Luna."

"Hi, Brennan," I said, sitting down at the desk in front of him. He actually knew my name! "What do you think we're doing?"

"I have no clue."

"Great," I said, laughing. "Not even the smartest guy in the class knows what we're doing. I'm screwed."

"You think I'm the smartest guy in the class?" Brennan asked, frowning. I nodded hesitantly, and his frown broke into a smile. "That's awesome. I'm never the smartest of a class."

"Do you really like psychology?"

"Yeah. What about you?"

"I love it," I said, grinning. "I want to be a psychologist when I go to college."

"Same!" Brennan said, and my heart soared. Maybe if we dated after graduating, we could work together as psychologists. "I didn't know we had things in common."

"Me either!" I said brightly. He sent me a dazzling smile that almost made my heart stop. Smiling back, I decided to face the front. Mr. Oliver was up there, grabbing a stack of papers.

"Today, we are going to label parts of the brain," he explained, going to every group. He made it to ours and handed us one sheet of paper. It was a design of the brain with blank spaces for us to label the parts. "I want you all to try your hardest to remember the many parts of the brain. However, if you really need help, you can always come and ask me."

My smile faltered when I stared down at the piece of paper. Even though we had just learned about the parts of the brain, I wasn't very good at identifying them. "Do you remember the parts of the brain?" Brennan whispered, and I shook my head. "Okay, we might be screwed."

"Oh my Lord," I said, still staring down at the paper. I looked up at Brennan with a sheepish smile. "I didn't really pay attention to the lesson when we learned about the parts of the brain."

"Honestly? Me either."

I let out a short laugh, shaking my head. This would be fun. "The first group who finishes the brain will get extra credit!" Mr. Oliver called out.

"Do you need extra credit?" I shook my head. "Good. Me either."

"Let's just try to finish the brain so we can get credit," I said, nodding. Grabbing my pencil, I stood up to turn my desk around. My foot hooked around the pole on my desk, and I nearly went down. However, I played it off, even though my cheeks heated up. I quickly slid my desk right next to his and sat down. He didn't seem to notice that I nearly fell down. "So, do you remember any part of the brain?"

"I have a question first," he said, staring down at the paper. His light brown hair fell in his eyes, so he pushed it out of the way. "Are we just labeling the four lobes of the brain?"

I stared at the sheet of paper for a second. "I have no idea."

"That's what it looks like."

"If you guys want a more challenging one," Mr. Oliver said from his desk in the back of the classroom, "then you can do the one for the parts on the inside of the brain."

"I think that answers our question," I said, smiling. "Okay, so I kind of remember the lobes. There's the frontal lobe at the front, and the occipital lobe at the back."

"Those are the two that I remember as well," Brennan said as I wrote down the two lobes. My hands were shaking, so my handwriting didn't look good at all. He closed his green eyes, trying to remember what the other two lobes were. "I think there's the parietal lobe right behind the frontal lobe."

"Sweet," I said, writing it down on the piece of paper. "Okay, what's the last one?"

"I'm not sure."

"Okay. Let me try to think." I closed my eyes, trying to picture the page of the textbook that the parts of the brain were on. I could picture it, but I couldn't tell what the words were on the page. Sighing, I opened my eyes. Brennan was staring at me with a small smile on his face, so I said, "I couldn't think of it."

"What were you doing?"

"I was trying to remember the page it was on," I said, shrugging. My face heated up. "Sometimes I can see images from textbooks or slideshows."

"That's really cool, Luna."

Flustered, I said, "Oh. Thanks."

"You're welcome," he said, looking back at the paper. "I think I remember the last lobe. It's the temporal lobe."

A grin lit up my face, and I said, "Yeah! That's it! Good job, Brennan."

"Thanks." I quickly jotted it down and stood up. He got out of his seat as well, and we walked up to Mr. Oliver's desk together.

"Lookie here, ladies and gentlemen," he said, taking our piece of paper. "Luna and Brennan finished first! You all could learn a lesson or two from them."

"What can we do now?" I asked him. "Do we have to do the more challenging one?"

"You don't have to if you don't want to."

"Okay," I said, nodding. I started to head back to my desk, but Brennan stopped me by touching my arm. I whirled around, heart hammering in my chest. "Yes?"

"Do you want to sit next to me?" he asked. "It feels like I barely know you, and I want that to change."

"Oh," I said, my eyes widening. "Um, actually, I'd like to listen to music right now."

"Okay," Brennan said, nodding once. "Okay. I'll talk to you later."

I gave him a smile and walked back to my desk. I chided myself for not going with him to talk. If I had enough courage, I would have gone to talk to him. Perhaps we weren't meant to be after all.
