FORTY SIX
I made sure my room was cleaned extra well before Drake showed up. "Char, are you almost ready to leave? Drake's going to be here any minute!"
"Don't worry about me," Charlotte said, stepping out of the bathroom. "I'll be gone in no time and then you can have Drake all to yourself. All alone. In a dorm. With a bed."
"Charlotte!" I said, throwing a pillow at the blonde. My face was probably a tomato. "We are not going to have sex and you know it."
"I don't know," Charlotte said in a sing-song voice. "You look super cute in that dress."
I looked down at my outfit and bit my lip. "Is it too much?"
"It screams, 'I'm desperate.'"
"Now you're lying," I said, picking her pillow up off the floor. I fluffed it slightly and set it back on my bed.
"Oh, you caught me," Charlotte said giggling. "It's nice to see you finally trying to impress a guy."
"What happened to the real Charlotte? She's never this mean."
"She can't come to the phone right now. New Charlotte is a b - witch and won't let her come out."
"Thank you for catching yourself," I said. I grinned and said, "See? I'm a good influence on you."
"Nah." Charlotte smiled back at me, and I felt all the nerves dissipate. Of course I could do this. It was just Drake. That's all.
I lied. A knock on the door sent my heart hammering in my chest. "Char, you get the door."
Charlotte frowned and said, "Why me? It's your guy."
"I'm nervous." I gave a shaky smile, and Charlotte laughed. "Hey! Don't laugh at me!"
"You're hilarious." Charlotte opened the door but not wide enough for me to see who was there. For a few seconds, Charlotte stood there and talked to the person. I got suspicious. Why would she need to talk to Drake? Before I could say anything, Charlotte moved over and let Drake in. "You two behave. I'll be gone for a couple hours so don't do something I would do."
A strangled noise left my lips as Charlotte slipped out the door, her laugh echoing down the hallway. "She is the worst."
"She's funny," Drake said, a grin on his face. "She means well."
"Says you," I said, sighing. "I don't know how I'm friends with her."
"Maybe you're like Lara Jean and Chris from To All The Boys I've Loved Before."
I giggled and said, "You've read the series?"
"No. I watched the movie," Drake said seriously. "It was pretty good."
"The books are way better," I said, scoffing. "Books are always better than the movies."
"Mhmm. Sure." My mouth dropped, and Drake burst out laughing. "I was kidding, Luna."
"You better be," I said pointedly. I hopped up onto my bed and patted the seat next to me. "Come here so we can make our wholesome playlist."
Drake slowly made his way over to the bed, and my heart rate soared. I thought I could do this, but now I'm doubting it. Drake slid in next to me, his shoulder slightly touching mine. I stopped short suddenly. "Are you okay?"
"I'm great!" I said, my face flushing. I reached forward on my bed and grabbed my computer, bringing it forward. "So, what's the first song that is going in our playlist?"
"Hesitate by Sincerely, Gray," Drake said immediately. "Such an underrated song by them."
"I don't think I've heard it yet," I said, frowning. I searched for it on Spotify and quickly added the song. "Okay. The next song I want to add is The Midnight Bride by The Whys. Ooh, I absolutely jam to that song!" I started humming the song as I added it to the playlist.
"I think I heard that song once," Drake said. "It was nice."
"It's so much better than nice," I said, glancing over at him. "It's one of my favorites by them."
We continued back and forth for a bit until Drake leaned back and sighed. I looked at him. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. It's just . . ."
"It's just what?"
"I'm tired," Drake sighed. "I'm just tired."
"Okay then," I said, leaning back as well. I settled in next to Drake and said, "Do you want to talk about it?"
"What's there to talk about?"
"I don't know," I said. "Talk about whatever you want."
"Okay," Drake said quietly. "Okay." He stayed silent, and I was afraid he was going to stay silent all night. "Have I ever told you why I wanted to become a lawyer?"
"No."
"Well, it all started when my brother died," Drake said, his voice low and raw. "My brother wanted to be a lawyer when he grew up. He didn't get to do so I decided to do it for him."
"How is that going?"
"Not well. I hate everything about the classes I've taken," Drake said. He chuckled ruefully. "Sometimes following in your families footsteps isn't a good thing."
"No, it isn't," I said, shaking my head. "I have a funny story that involves that."
"Do tell."
"Okay, so in middle school, my eldest brother wanted to become a pharmacist like my father," I said, glancing over at Drake. "He took some classes in school for it but realized he hated everything about medicine. He didn't want to let my father down, though, so he continued taking those classes. My dad figured out that Matthew was failing his classes so he sat all of us down to ask what we wanted to do with our lives. I had no clue what I wanted to do so I made it up, telling my family that I wanted to be a freaking astronaut. Everyone was laughing at me because I have the worst fear of heights. My brother finally told Dad that he didn't want to be a pharmacist afterward."
"Oh my," Drake said, laughing slightly. "I wish I could've seen it in person."
"Uh, no thanks," I said, giggling. "It was one of the most embarrassing things that happened in my life." I let out a happy sigh. "What do you really want to do with your life?"
"I want to open a business. I'm not sure what kind of business yet, though," Drake said after a second of silence. "I can't go back in time and change my classes now."
"No, but you could explore other things in college," I said, shrugging. "Maybe we could open a business or something, since you want to get a business degree."
"What kind of business?"
"I don't know. Maybe a place where teens could go if they need emotional help or something like that," I said, shrugging. "I don't know. I want to help people, but I have no clue what to do."
"That's actually a great idea," Drake said slowly. "I would like to help people as well. I want them to know that there are good people and places in the world."
"That's the spirit!" I said, getting excited. I sat up and turned toward him and said, "I can see it now. All my siblings will work there and you and I and maybe Charlotte and Paul -"
"Slow down," Drake said, laughing. "We need to graduate high school first. Anyway, who says your siblings will work there?"
"Me!" I said, grinning. "They'd totally be on board! Oh my gosh, now I'm getting excited. Can you see it, Drake? Because I can!" I grinned as wide as I could at Drake and all he did was smile back. "What should we call it?"
"I don't know," he said, sitting up. "But continue talking about it."
"Okay," I said, my stomach flopping slightly. "Okay. We'll have therapy dogs. There could be a quiet place where kids and teens could study. I would be the in-house psychologist so I could talk and help the kids with their problems. Maybe we could have a living room area where they could just hang out."
"Where would the revenue come from?"
"Hm, that's a good question," I said, frowning. "We could find a rich friend?"
"Funny."
"Okay," I said, laughing. "Maybe we could have like members. You know how at the library they have a membership card? Maybe that could be what we could do at our business. It would be like fifty dollars or something for a membership."
"That sounds so nice, Luna," Drake said, smiling. "We still have time to figure everything out."
"So, you're saying you want to do it?" I asked, grabbing his hand. "Because that would make my day."
"Yes, I am saying that I'd like to do this," Drake said, nodding. "Whatever you'd like to do, I want to do as well."
"What?" I asked, taken aback. "What are you talking about?"
"You're such a good influence," Drake said, his deep brown eyes shining. "And you make me want to see the good in the world. You make me see the good in myself. That's a hard thing considering the state I'm in."
"Oh, well, I just am myself," I said, awkwardly. "That's nothing special."
"To me, it's everything."
"So, uh, are you feeling better?" I asked, my eyes wide.
Drake laughed and leaned back on my bed. "I'm feeling great. Better than in a while."
"I'm happy for you." I leaned back again and sighed. "I love my bed."
"Me too," Drake said, laying his head on my shoulder. "Your bed is much more comfy than mine."
"Well, you could stay here tonight if you want," I said slowly. "It's okay if you don't want to, though. Just a thought."
"I don't know," Drake said, wrapping an arm around my waist. His touch was electric. He tugged me closer, and I giggled. "It seems like a good thought."
"Drake," I said, grinning. "I don't want Charlotte to get the wrong picture."
"There's nothing wrong with just sleeping, Luna."
"I know," I said, enjoying how his arms fit around me. "Maybe we could stay here for a while."
"What if we fall asleep?" Drake asked, yawning.
"Then we fall asleep," I said. "The RA can't do anything about it. Charlotte has had Paul in here before."
"Buenas noches, Luna."
"Buenas noches, Drake."
I knew I shouldn't have enjoyed this so much, but I couldn't help it. There was something nice about the way he was holding me and how his head was resting on my shoulder.
