Chapter 28: Spells And Hidden Controllers
I told everyone what Kasdar told me. After he told me his story, we sat outside for an hour longer, just talking and I honestly felt better and normal. It was nice for a change.
Before he left, he gave me permission to tell the others about what he really is. But only those who can be trusted and won't tell anyone so I got back, waiting for everyone to wake up. Once they woke up, I told my siblings, the royalties, James and Jordan and Gomin's parents, Fany and Stark everything he told me.
Gomin shook his head. "Man, I feel bad. It must be hard for him."
"And we were pretty harsh. To be honest I would have done it. Taken the bracelet and stolen The Great Book to bring back my dad.... I mean, now that I know he wasn't all bad." Stark said.
I saw Fany take his hand in hers.
"So what do we do now? I mean the spell obviously didn't work for him but now what?" Gomin asks, walking back and forth.
"Kasdar said that he might have found something. And even then, he might try to do the spell on Kameron and Kate." I replied.
Kameron didn't comment on this. He hasn't been talking much since we got back. Him and Chase would sometimes have a conversation but it was short.
"Well I think we should look for Jemin. He would probably know what to do and why the spell didn't work on Kasey and Kasdar." King Philip said.
"I think we need to send a spy."
Everyone turned to look at Kameron, shocked.
"What do you mean a spy?" I asked carefully.
"A spy. We need someone to give us report. To know what's going on, what they're up too. We have no other choice, we can't just sit here and hope that someone finds Jemin." Kameron explained.
It was the most he said since he came back.
"He's right." I said. "I'm going to do it."
At this, everyone started talking at the same time. I could make out Gomin refusing to let me go and my parents threatening to ground me if I left again.
I raised my hand so they could be quiet but everyone continued to talk at the same time.
I closed my eyes, frustrated. A few seconds later everyone fell silent. I opened my eyes to see everyone looking panicked.
"I put a spell on you and don't bother trying to undo it. I learnt it from Jemin so ya." I said.
"Now as I was about to say before you all interrupted." I continued, ignoring their outraged faces. "I'm going to go because firstly, I am more powerful than you guys. Secondly, he needs me. Maybe the spell didn't work because he needed the bracelet and that's what he realized. And I kept the bracelet in a place where only I can get it so he will not kill me if I am found."
Kameron raised his hand as soon as I finished talking. I nodded towards him, releasing the spell.
"I'm coming too." He said, his voice full of determination.
"It's too dangerous for more than one person to go." I countered.
"If one of us gets caught then the other can come for help." Kameron fought back, his eyes squinted.
I half smile appeared on my face. "I can make a spell that will be able to keep me in contact with you guys. Heck, even humans use walkie talkies to communicate."
Kameron frowned. "What if the other needs help?"
I smiled. "I won't need help because they won't hurt me. I need you all here so if I do need help, I'll contact you and you can help."
Kameron glared at me. "I'm going and that's final."
"You are not."
"Yes I am."
"No you're not."
Before we could say anything, someone smacked my head. I turned around and glared at Gomin.
"What was that for?" I demanded
He didn't reply and I realized why he hit me.
I released everyone from the spell and they all started yelling.
I cleared my voice and loudly said. "If you do NOT stop talking RIGHT NOW I will put the spell on you again."
All at once, everyone stopped talking. "Thank you. Please take turns so we can all be heard." I said, calmly.
"You are not going. And that is final." Gomin deadpanned.
"Whose going to stop me?" I challenged.
"I am." He replied.
"I can escape and you know it."
Gomin sighed and held the bridge of his nose, irritated. "Mickey, why do you have to be so difficult and stubborn. It's too dangerous for you to go. It's my job to protect you and that's what I will do."
At this, my expression softened. "Gomin, I know you are trying to protect me but I am the princess. I have to protect my people."
"Why can't someone else do it?" Gomin whined.
"Because I have to do it. Not someone else."
"Fine. Oh well, it'll be an adventure for us."
"Us?" I asked.
"Well obviously I'm coming with you."
"No! You are not!"
"Wait wait wait. Who said we were going to let Mickey go?" My dad demanded.
I sighed. "Please guys. I'm going one way or another."
My mom and dad looked at each other. It looked like they were having a secret conversation with their eyes. Finally my mom looked at me.
"Just please be careful."
I smiled at her. "Aren't I always."
************
"I'm coming with you." Gomin said for the hundredth time.
I continued to ignore him, packing a bag that I would need to take with me.
Kameron and Gomin were arguing with me while I packed.
Kameron groaned. "Mickey. Please."
"Nope."
Kameron sighed. "Please. I...I have to know."
I stopped doing what I was doing and looked at Kameron. "You have to know what?"
"What they did to her."
I knew he was talking about Kate.
Bitting my lips, I walked up to him and gave him a hug.
"They didn't do anything to her. She chose to do this."
Kameron shoved me and I stumbled back, almost falling but Gomin managed to catch me.
"What the heck man!" Gomin yelled.
"She would never betray us! How could you think that!" Kameron yelled at me. The calm boy was gone.
"Kameron, please calm down." I said, gently.
"I'm coming and that's final." With that, Kameron left the room.
I sighed. "I shouldn't have said that."
"It was the truth. Sooner or later he has to come to terms with it and move on."
I didn't reply. I picked up the spell book that I needed most. The spell was already imprinted in my mind but I still placed it in my bag.
"Mickey, I'm coming."
"Please Gomin."
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't come with you."
I bit my lips. "Do you remember when I first discovered my ability to do magic?"
Gomin frowned. "Ya. It was when we went to Dormaselor."
"Ya. And you almost died." I whispered.
Gomin looked at me. "But I didn't."
"You could have. If I didn't have powers, you would have been dead. I can't let that happen again."
"But it won't."
"It might. And maybe next time, I won't be able to save you."
I sat down heavily on the bed and Gomin joined me. He put one arm around my shoulder.
"You can't protect everyone Mickey."
"I can try."
"It's my job to protect you. Not the other way around."
I yawned suddenly feeling tired. "You're my friend. I don't want you to get hurt."
"Just trust me. No one will be hurt."
"You can't be sure."
"You're right, I'm not sure. But I'm sure that I love you. And I want to protect you. I will always protect you. Mickey, even if you don't let me come, we all know I will find a way. I will always find a way to come back to you."
I smiled. "Well aren't you just a sweet little boy."
Gomin chuckled. "Go rest. You're tired."
"I'm so not." I replied, trying to suppress a yawn.
"Sure you're not."
I chuckled, feeling my eye lids getting heavy. "Maybe I should sleep for a few minutes."
"I'll go pack." Gomin got up to leave but before he got out, I said.
"Oh and Gomin."
He looked back towards me with a raised eye brow.
"I love you too."
*********
We were almost hidden by the trees when Chase came running after us.
We had already said our goodbyes and were on our way, when we heard Chase call our names. He had a backpack on.
We waited for him and when he reached us, he was panting. "You. Almost left. Without. Me."
I groaned. "Not this again. Chase you're not going."
Chase glared at me. "How could you not tell me?!"
"No one was supposed to know we were leaving until we left. Who told you?" I demanded.
Kameron stepped forward. "I did."
"What!? Why?!" I asked, incredulously.
"He deserves to know and he deserves to come." Kameron replied.
I sighed as Chase said. "Look Mickey, you know I love her. I've always loved her and I always will. I need to know."
Bitting my lips, I looked at Gomin who shrugged. "The more the merrier."
I rolled my eyes. "Fine but don't expect me to save your butts when we get caught."
A huge smile appeared on Chase's face before he gave me a bone crushing hug.
"Ok. Let me to!"
"Thank you Mickey!" He said, putting me down.
"As if you would have gone back if I told you too." I muttered.
Chase gave me another huge grin.
"Well lets get going then." Gomin said.
And so we started our journey. We kept out conversations light and simple, Chase and Kameron barely talking. They laughed a couple times, making me feel better but that was about it.
It took us two hours to reach Charilot and another hour walk to reach the palace without being caught. We came up with a plan during this long journey.
Guards were everywhere but I used my spell to disguise all of us as Maligns.
"This is so creepy." Gomin whispered to me.
I nodded. He was right. It was so quiet and deserted.
"Where do you think the other Damtal and Maligns are? Like the kids? I've only seen men." Chase said.
"I heard they were at Dormaselor." Kameron replied.
"How'd you know?" I asked.
"I heard a couple of Damtals talking."
I nodded and we continued in silence.
When the palace came to view, I stared at it. I bit my lips, trying to keep the tears at bay.
It wasn't fair. Why does this have to happen? Why is there another world? I miss Hilary and Danny. I miss Jace and Janet and Rob and Sadie. They're all probably worried to death and furious.
I felt someone gently punch my arms and looked up at Gomin. "You ok?" He asked.
I nodded. "Ya."
"You don't look ok."
I shrugged. "I'm just feeling a little down. The negativity in the air."
Gomin raised his eye brows, not believing a word I said but I didn't say anything else.
Once we reached the front door, Chase asked. "Is this a good idea?"
I shrugged. "Do we have a choice?"
Gomin bit his lips. "I don't like it."
Kameron nodded. "I don't like any of this."
For five minutes we stood there, just staring at each other. As if things would get better if we wished hard enough. But that's not how life worked.
"Ok. I'm going in. I'll see you guys around, I guess." I said.
The three boys nodded and they left. Now it was only me. Bitting my lips, I did the one thing that would get me caught. That would get everything in motion.
I knocked.
********
I didn't know what would happen. Honestly, I knew no one would kill me, well not yet anyway. But I wasn't expecting Cole. And I wasn't expecting him to say what he said.
Cole answered the door and I could tell he was very shocked to see me there. He quickly looked over his shoulder and satisfied with what he saw, he stepped out and closed the door behind him.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Cole whisper yelled.
I wasn't expecting that reaction. "You seem disappointed to see me. Shouldn't you be happy?"
Cole closed his eyes and took a deep breath. I looked at him carefully. He had bags under his eyes and his hair was disheveled. He had lost weight and his eyes were red. There were worry lines all over his face.
Cole was tired. Very tired.
"Mickey, leave before anyone sees you."
I felt my jaw drop. Was Cole actually telling me to leave.
"Look I don't want to explain ok. And if anyone finds out I let you go, I'll be dead."
I shook my head. "Why would you let me go? You're evil."
Cole looked as if I had physically slapped him. "I know I've done bad things but I'm not evil."
"Yes you are!" I snapped. I was frustrated and sick of all this. So I snapped at him.
"Your father is an evil coward and you're no better. Don't try to act like you are a victim because here you are right now, helping him. I don't see you on this side, trying to stop your father. You. Are. No. Better. Than. Him."
At this Cole punched the wall making his knuckles bleed. "I'm not like my father!"
I shook my head. "He might be doing all this but you're helping. If anything, you're worse."
That's when I knew I went too far. Cole's eyes started to glow a dangerous red but before he could do anything someone came. Someone unexpected and I've never thought I would be glad to see him.
Now the fun begins.
"Well well well, what do we have here." Jared said, an evil smile in place.
I stood up tall. "I'm here to tell you to leave."
King Jared laughed. "Feeling high and mighty are we now?" He shook his head. "You are very amusing Mickey, coming out here all alone."
"How do you know I'm alone?" I asked, a fake smirk in place.
I know I had backup and it wasn't wise to let him know that but by saying what I did, he would be sure that I'm alone.
"Because Mickey you're careless. You want to protect everyone and if I know you, no one knows you came here. You wouldn't want to risk their lives."
Well guess what, you don't know me. But I didn't say that. I didn't say anything and he thought that he was right.
"Cole go get the guard so they can escort Mickey to her cell."
Cole glared at me before turning away. I noticed his fists clenched and his shoulders were tense. I felt guilty.
"Now Mickey." King Jared said, putting his arm around my shoulder. I shrugged it off and he laughed. I felt sick.
"We both know you're not here to just tell me to leave and then be put in a cell. Tell me, what do you want." King Jared said.
Here goes nothing.
"I know you need the bracelet. That's why you're having a difficult time trying to control the world by using twins. You're not strong enough."
I saw Jared clench his jaws and I knew I was right.
With a smirk I continued. "I'll tell you where the bracelet is."
At this King Jared stopped in his track. "Why?"
"Because I want something in return."
King Jared stared at me, trying to see if I was being serious. "What do you want?"
"I want you to tell me what happened to Kate. I want to see her."
King Jared chuckled. "Mickey, Mickey, foolish Mickey. I didn't do anything to Kate. It was her choice."
I smiled. "It wasn't her choice. You can't lie to me. I'm different Jared, I'm not the foolish girl I was. I know my magic. And I know my sister. She's not a traitor. She's not like Robby."
King Jared looked me and sighed. "How will I know that if I told you about Kate, you'll give me the bracelet."
"You have my word."
"That means nothing to me."
"I know she's under a spell."
At this, King Jared went silent. So I continued. "I've read this. It's a powerful spell, almost undoable but not impossible. She didn't die that day, you took her body. And you made her evil."
King Jared didn't reply at first. Then he started. "You're a smart girl. And I'm amazed. If her twin and her lover knew, I would have expected them to be here. But let me guess, you haven't told them."
This wasn't a part of the plan we made. I was to ask to see Kate. That was all. But I knew she was under a spell. I started thinking about it the day we were rescued and it made sense. So I went to Jemins room and started searching and I found something. Something that suggested I was right. I wasn't sure until now though.
I didn't tell anyone because I knew Kameron and Chase wouldn't think before acting and that would get them in trouble and maybe even killed.
"You're right, I didn't tell them. Because I know they can't save her and neither can I. But I know you can undo the curse and only you." I said.
King Jared smirked. "You've changed Mickey. You really surprise me. You're right, no one can undo the spell but neither can I."
At this I frowned. "But the person who did the spell is the only one that can undo it."
"Exactly. But I didn't do the spell on Kate."
"Then who did?"
My blood went cold when I heard his voice. "I did." Robby said, stepping out of the shadow.
