Chapter 30: Last Letters And Coded Messages

I continued to look at the calendar on my phone. January 10. 2 days.

I sighed. There still hasn't been any progress. Robby hasn't showed up and Danny still hasn't woken up.

Kate, Kameron, Gomin and Jemin are still trying to solve the riddle. And to make matters worse, there might just be war.

The kings and queens have been very busy having meetings. I haven't seen my parents for the past three days. They decided to talk to King Jared, the king of Dormaselor, but he won't talk to them. And none of the Maligns or Damgals have been seen anywhere. They were all at Dormaselor, no communication whatsoever.

James called me yesterday and told me the worst news. The Orb was completely red. This means we have been betrayed. And war.

Our parents won't tell us anything, so won't James's or Jordan's but we all know something is going on. Kent has been training everyone so hard. He even started training me.

I can now hold a weapon without hurting myself.

I got up and decided to take a walk. I was about to open the front door when Fany walked in.

"Oh. Hey Fany. How are you? It's been a while." I said.

"Ya. I've missed you. How are thing?" She asked, giving me a hug.

"I would say good but you know that's a lie."

"Ya." Fany didn't look her usually self. She wasn't happy and jolly. She seemed sad.

"How are you? Is everything ok?"

She sighed. "Ya I guess."

"Come on. Lets go for a walk and you'll tell me what's bothering you." I suggested.

She agreed and we walked out. It was a nice day. There was a little breeze but it was comforting.

"So. What's bothering you so much?" I asked.

"Stark."

I froze, shocked. I still haven't told anyone about how I saw Cole and Stark together. Not even Gomin.

I continued walking. "What about him?"

"He's been very distant. I don't see him much and you know we're always together."

I chuckled. "Yes you guys are inseparable ."

"But not anymore. We barely see each other. This always happens when it's someones turn to disappear. He becomes distant but never this bad. I think he blames himself."

"Why would he blame himself?"

"Because of his father."

"Oh. But that's not his fault."

"That's what I keep telling him but....he never listens."

We continued to walk in silence.

"You like him, don't you?" I asked.

"Of course I do. What kind of question is that?"

"I don't mean like him. I mean like like him."

"Oh." she said. I could see a blush starting to rise. "I don't know what your talking about."

"Oh please." I said, rolling my eyes.

"Oh who am I kidding. Of course I do."

"Haha ya. It's kind of obvious."

"It's obvious to everyone but him."

"He likes you too."

She scoffed. "Ya right."

"I'm serious. It's obvious. To everyone but you."

She kept quiet, lost in thought.

We decided to head back home.

"You guys are cute together." I said
If he isn't backstabbing us I thought to myself.
******
"Guys I have a question." Kameron said.

"Ask away." Gomin said.

Kate, Kameron, Gomin and I were sitting on the floor in the main room.

"You know how the riddle is pointing us towards an object."

"Ya." I said.

"How is that going to help? I mean, let's say its an album, so what? We go look at all the albums and The Great Book is in there? That's not even possible." Kameron said.

"He's right." Kate said.

Silence.

"Maybe we're looking at it the wrong way, maybe it's not an object." I suggested.

"But it says you buy it." Gomin argued.

"I don't know!" I exclaimed. "I'm just trying to be helpful."

"Geez calm down." Gomin said.

I was about to yell at him but I caught myself. I got up.

"Where are you going?" Kate asked.

"To my room."

"Aw come on Mickey. I'm sorry." Gomin said.

I ignored him and walked away.

I can't stand this anymore. We literally haven't done a single thing.

I yanked my door open and walked in. Then I turned back around and walked out. I wasn't ready to read the letter on my bed.

I leaned against my door and closed my eyes. Please let it be something useful, please. I stood there for a few minutes then walked in.

I read the letter.

'Remember me? Of course you do. I have bad news hon, this is my last letter to you. Now here is a secret, there is a code hidden behind all my letters. Solve it, you'll get a hint as to where the Great Book is. A little hint, search at the heart of the place. The place that kills your heart.
I'll miss you
Love
Z'

I stared at it. And smiled. Yes yes yes yes. This is the last letter. And probably the most useful one.

I raced downstairs, letter in my hand.
Fany was sitting there.

At that moment I didn't care. I trusted her.

"Guys guys guys guys. Guess what? Guess what?" I laughed.

"Wow. Weren't you just mad. Man, girls are weird." Gomin said.

I rolled my eyes and waved the letter.

"Oh not this again." Kameron said.

"What's that?" Fany asked.

Everyone looked at each other, shocked. But I told her everything.

"Oh wow." She said once I was done.

"Yup. And this is the last letter." I said, smiling.

"Wait what? How do you know. And why are you so happy?" Kameron asked.

"See for yourself." I said, handing him the letter. He read it out loud.

"Wow. Ok." He said.

"Yup. Come on. Lets go to my room and get all the letters so we can solve the mystery." I said.

We went to my room and everyone sat on the floor. I took out the letters and spread it around the floor.

"Ok. So what now?" Gomin asked.

I shrugged. "I don't know. We have to try and find a pattern, I guess."

"Well the only place Z ever mentions is the cookie store. Maybe it's there?" Kate suggested.

"I don't think so." I replied. "We're supposed to use all the letters to solve this mystery. Not just one."

"I can't believe you guys knew all this all a long." Fany said. She stared reading the letter. Then frowned.

"W-why is the person warning you about me? And Stark?"

Oh no.

"I-I don't know." I said.

"I can't believe this. You honestly don't think we would ever betray you guys, do you?"

"Of course not." Kate said.

"Don't lie to me. If you didn't believe that then why haven't you told us about all this?" Fany demanded.

No one said anything.

"It's because of Sam isn't it? Your no better than the Maligns." Fany said.

"We're sorry." I whispered.

"Look, we are all sorry. But we don't have time for this. Help us solve the problem and be mad at us later or leave." Kameron said, calmly.

She looked furious but nodded "I'll help. Because thats what friends do."

Ouch.

"Ok. Now what?" Kate asked.

"I wish Robby was here. He's good at these kinds of things." Kameron said.

"Ya. He used to love coded messages. Remember his trick with Rodger. I still can't believe I didn't get that." Kate said, smiling to herself.

Suddenly I got an idea. "Guys, what if that's what Z did?"

"What? Use the first letter of each word? That's too long." Gomin complained.

"And besides, he said if we find the coded message, then we'll get a hint as to where The Great Book is. How long could a name of a place be?" Kameron said.

I closed my eyes. "What if it's the first letter of the first word in each letter?" I asked.

"What does that even mean?" Fany asked.

"Ok. On the first letter, the letter started with the world Dear. So we take D. Then on the second letter, the first word is Oh. So we take O." I explained.

"Ok ok. I see what your doing. You might just be right." Kameron said, looking excited.

We did just that and came up with one word that set shivers down my body.

"Well Mickey, I'm sure you are right. But I wish you weren't" Gomin said.

We stared at the word on the paper we wrote.

DORMASELOR.

10 letters. 1 word.
******

"What do we do?" Kameron asked

"I don't know." I whispered.

"I can't believe The Great Book is at Dormaselor. I knew the Maligns and Damtals couldn't be trusted." Fany said.

"I'm going." I said.

"Going where?" Kate asked.

"Dormaselor." I replied.

"No. No your not. We have to tell the adults." Kameron said

"I'm the child of the prophecy. I'm going to go and find The Great Book and I'm going to break the spell."

"Mickey you can't go. You don't even know where to look. It says Dormaselor but it doesn't say exactly where." Gomin said

"I know where it is." I said.

"Where? How could you possibly come up with a place?" Kate asked.

"It's obvious." Fany said.

I looked at Fany. "You realized, didn't you."

"Can you guys just tell us where it is!" Gomin demanded.

"You know how Dormaselor slowly kills the soul of a Lari? And so it also affects us, Charis." I said.

"Ya."

"And the farther in you go, the faster it kills you. Well, the Maligns built their palace at the heart of Doramselor. That's where it is." Fany explained.

"That makes sense but why are you so sure?" Kate asked.

"Because of what Z said in the last letter. He said search at the heart of the place. The place that kills the heart." I said.

"Wow. That's genius!" Kameron exclaimed.

"But your still not going." Gomin said.

"Gomin please, you have to under..." I started but Gomin cut me off.

"Your not going without me." He said, smiling.

I smiled. "But it's too dangerous." I argued, half heartedly.

"Remember I'm you protector. I'll always protect you." Gomin said.

"Ok. Lets go get ready." Kate said, standing up.

"Help me up, will you." Kameron said to Kate.

"Wait, you guys can't come." I protested.

"Oh drop it. We're coming or we're all staying. Their our siblings too. You might be the child of the prophecy but we're all a family." Kate said.

"Just in case it's not clear, I'm coming too." Fany said.

"No." We all said, simultaneously.

"Geez, am I this unwanted." Fany replied

"It's too dangerous for you. We're half Laris so it takes time for us to die. But your full Lari." I said.

"Too bad. I'm coming or I'll tell the grown ups." Fany said.

"We don't have time for this." Kameron said.

I sighed. "Lets go."

"Yay." Fany said.
