178. Victory
Ken: (thinking There's only one way to win this bout. Or at least, only one way I can think of...)
Max pointed his hand at Ken, electricity sparking in it.
Ken lifted his head up and placed his hands to his left and right.
Ken: (thinking: Here goes nothing...)
And then, he looked directly at the ice, his eyes glowing red.
Max: What the!?
Of course, Max had already figured that Ken was checkmated. However, he'd never thought that Ken would actually go so far as to melt the ice.
Back with those watching the battle...
Rose: What is Ken doing?
Tiffany: I dunno.
Luke: Beats me...
But to Luke and Tiffany, as they knew Ken quite well, he had something planned. Something interesting.
It wasn't like Ken's predicament had gone unnoticed by the other three, but rather, that they'd all counted Ken out.
However, seeing as he hadn't given up, there had to be something hidden under his sleeve.
Tiffany and Luke. They both knew this about Ken. He wasn't the kind to act without reason.
And as for Max, he knew quite well that he shouldn't let his guard down.
Max: (thinking: What is he planning? Lasering the floor?)
However, Ken still did it. He lasered the icy floor, bit by bit, quite rapidly, not even aiming anywhere close to Max, leaving him quite confused.
Max: Uhhhh.....
As for those watching the fight...
Julianne: (thinking: Keep your eyes peeled sweetie. This guy is definitely up to something.)
Rose: What is he...
But before Rose could finish her sentence, the idea soon came into full formation.
Ken wasn't trying to melt the ice, he was trying to super heat it.
The result? Steam.
But as the steam cooled in the air, something of a....
Max: Mist...?
Ken: Yes. Mist..
The hot foggy air covered the battlefield, keeping those watching the fight in the dark about what was going on.
Max: Jeez
Rose: I... I can't see.
Tiffany: Hmph. (thinking: So he did have one trick left up his sleeve. Should've known.)
Luke: (thinking: So this is what Einstein had planned. Heh. Well, Max. What are you gonna do about it?)
Julianne: (thinking: Be careful baby.)
For the entirety of the fight, she had been silent. But now, she felt almost as though she should say something. But still, she kept her tongue.
No use worrying about her son at a time like this. After all, she would only distract him.
Back at the scene of the battle...
Max: Ken. What the heck!?
Ken: Whaddya think?
Neither teen could see the other.
Ken: It's kinda like a smoke bomb, don't you think?
Max: Well... yeah... but. Sheesh...
He never would have imagined that Ken would go so far.
Max: Isn't this going overboard?
Ken: What!? It's only the sudden condensation of gaseous water once it meets a cool front.
Max: Huh!?
Ken: Eh... nevermind....
Back at the scene of the fight....
Rose: What's going on in there?
Tiffany: I dunno.
They all remained silent as they watched the steam slowly dissipate.
This dissipation was noted also by Ken. He knew once the steam cloud had been made that he didn't have that much time.
The steam reached the top of the room and then, small droplets begun to form on at the top, dropping back to the ground.
Small droplets also begun to form on the ground.
Ken: (thinking: Gotta make this quick)
Max: Well... now the both of us cant see what's going on.
Ken: Not necessarily.
Max: Huh!?
Ken: You forget. My eyes can scan things. For example... your heat signature.
Max: Mmmm.... (thinking: Drat. I should'a known he had something planned)
Meanwhile, Ken's eyes locked onto and targeted Max.
Ken: And so, I suggest that you surrender.
Max: Well.... I...
The fog cloud was slowly dissipating. But Max didn't have enough time to think of a way out.
Max: I won't quit.
He said this, but was genuinely unsure of what to do next.
Ken: You sure...
Max could hear soft foot prints being made, but couldn't quite tell form where.
Max: Yeah. I'm sure.
Ken: Ok then. (thinking: The hard way it is then.)
From his left, a pair of red eyes could be seen. And Max instinctively dashed out of the way.
However, anticlimactic as it was, Max tripped before he could even move and thereafter fell flat on his back, hitting his head.
The culprit?
Not ice.
Rather, the damp floor that Max had failed to notice.
And Ken, not missing a beat, fired two lasers at the right and left of Max's head.
Ken: I win.
Max: What the.... but...
Ken: Intriguing strategy, dont you think?
Max: Mmmm....
And at that point, the fog cleared enough for Tiffany to see what was going on, and she finally raised her hand.
Tiffany: Match! Ken!
