Chapter 1 - Darren
"Hey guys and welcome to another Minecraft video. This is episode 47 of our playthrough with Pixel," I said, speaking into the cheap headset my mum had bought off of eBay for my birthday. I checked that I was recording while Landon introduced himself.
"Hello," said Landon. However, since his YouTube name was PixelPlays, I had to always refer to him as Pixel.
"And today we're finding some endermen."
After a few minutes of walking around and fighting off creepers and zombies, I saw a distinct, tall figure in the distance. "Finally, an enderman. These things never show up when you want them to," I said, swinging my overpowered Sharpness V diamond sword at its feet. The enderman didn't stand a chance.
"And of course, it doesn't drop a pearl. What else would you expect?" I muttered, irritated.
"Got one," Landon said. He gave me the pearl and I turned it into an eye of ender using the blaze powder I had collected the previous episode.
A few minutes later, we had five eyes of ender. Then I noticed the time, and realised that it was time to stop recording. "Thanks for watching. Remember to like and subscribe. See ya," I said, and closed my cracked version of Fraps.
"Want to mess around on some servers for a bit?" Landon asked.
"Nah," I said, "I'm gonna upload this as soon as possible. I bet my seven subscribers are going to love this." My voice was thick with sarcasm.
"Whatever, dude. See you later," said Landon, and hung up the Skype call.
For a moment I sat there, thinking about my YouTube career. Was it really necessary? Getting anything more than ten subscribers would be an achievement for me, but that wasn't going to happen any time soon. Was I even going to ever get another subscriber? A voice in the back of my mind always told me that I would never be big on YouTube, but I still dreamed of it.
I stopped thinking about it, and closed Minecraft, opening up the video clip in Windows Movie Maker. I edited in my crappy intro that I had flung together in about two seconds, and saved the video. Then I went to YouTube and clicked 'upload', and sighed exasperatedly as my slow internet connection valiantly tried to process the huge amounts of data.
I leant back in my chair and checked the time. 22:56. I stifled a yawn and stretched. My mum had fallen asleep long ago, and I should be considering going to bed soon. Taking off my headset, I walked to the bathroom and did my business, then looked at myself in the mirror.
I looked horrible. At the ripe old age of fourteen, I was a very spotty teenager. I tried to spike up my boring brown hair, but it simply flopped down again. I hated my appearance. Someday I would change it so that I would have spiky jet black hair, deep brown eyes and not a single spot in sight. That way I would actually have a girlfriend.
Trudging back to my room, I sat on the bed and looked out the window. The stars seemed to be shining brighter than ever tonight. I remembered the film Pinocchio. "When you wish upon a star..." I murmured, watching the stars lazily pass through the sky. I closed my eyes.
"I wish I had more subscribers," I said. Even though I knew that it was only a fairy tale, the child in me still believed in magic. Although it was a stupid wish for a stupid cause, it was still a wish. Maybe I would get one or two new subscribers someday. I checked my laptop, and left it open, waiting for the video to upload. I wasn't too tired yet. I decided to watch some YouTube videos on my iPod to kill some time.
I saw that Sky had uploaded a new video, and I plugged in my earphones. SkyDoesMinecraft was one of my favourite YouTubers, among Tobuscus and JeromeASF. The video was just another mod showcase, but I still enjoyed it. Even if it was just a short video, Sky always found new ways to be entertaining. The butter and the squids, although overused, were still hilarious. After the video ended, I scrolled down to the comments section to give some support to Sky.
Just before I commented, though, I saw a spam post. For a fleeting moment I considered spamming. I couldn't do that... could I? I knew that everyone hated spam - after all, I hated it myself. But what were the consequences? Sure, maybe the comment would get flagged for spam, but the commenter would still get some more subscribers. I couldn't do it. Without posting anything, I scrolled back to the top of the page.
The view counter was still stuck on the classic 301 views. However, it already had over five thousand likes. I snorted. If I ever reached remotely close to 301 views, I would be very surprised. Even one like was a lot for me, let alone five thousand.
A few videos later, it was nearly midnight. I really needed to go to bed now. I had agreed to meet up with Landon and a few other mates for a game of football in the park the next morning. When I hit the soft mattress of my bed, I saw a shooting star whizz past. I instantly remembered my wish again, and wondered if anyone would ever watch my videos. Sighing, I closed my eyes.
