The forest (2)
Hazel picked up the receiver for the 27nd time today. Not that she was counting of course.
It was her job after all and she wasn't complaining.
"911 what's your emergency?" She said in a practiced and steady voice.
There was the sound of heavy breathing from the other end, and what sounded as if someone was being repeatedly thrashed by a hard object. She couldn't know for sure.
"Hello?" She tried again.
There was a muffled shout then a wet thud and all went quiet.
Suddenly there was a loud crack and the signal cut off completely.
Hazel had been working here long enough to recognize the sounds of a body hitting the ground and her fingers flew over the keys even before the call had disconnected.
No more than a few seconds later, she had managed to pinpoint the call down to a small patch of land in the forest and immediately dispatched the police who were in that area.
She sighed heavily. This was out of her hands now, she had done all that she could and she hoped that it would have been enough.
She took off her headset and closed her eyes, hoping desperately that the person, whoever that may be, was okay.
Will's Pov
Nico's body went motionless and limp on the ground, his blood splattered in tiny pools, staining the grass red.
This kill was harder than the last two dozen.
That was probably because Will had actually felt some sort of attraction for him.
Yes, it was fun while it lasted, but Will knew that they could never be. In the end, it had to be done. Nico had seen his face after all. And so, he had guaranteed a death sentence for himself ever since they had first laid (eyes) on each other.
He spared a short glance at the body lying facedown on the ground.
He contemplated dragging the corpse and piling it onto the other mounds of dead bodies but as he bent down to grab Nico's ankles, he noticed Nico's phone which was on the ground a little distance aways.
Will strode over and knelt to pick it up. It was cracked with the screen blacked out and it fell into pieces in his hand.
He stared at it for a moment. There was no way of telling if Nico had managed to call for help or no.
He decided that the chances were slim that Nico had managed to contact anyone, and even if he did, Will would be long gone before aid came.
He pocketed the phone with one hand, the other still holding the steel blade.
He would have to wipe his prints off of it later and then stash it back in its hidden place. Better safe than sorry.
He turned his back on Nico's corpse forgetting about him immediately and then mentally started selecting his next victim.
Reyna's pov
"Turn off the flashing lights and the siren."
Jason, who was driving raised an eyebrow but complied without an argument.
"We don't want to spook them." She explained and Jason nodded silently.
"You have arrived at your destination." The smooth sound of the GPS announced.
The two got off, and armed themselves as quickly as possible all while surveying the area.
"Footprints" Jason observed, crouching down to inspect the dirt.
Reyna followed suit, and her gaze followed the trial of footprints leading deeper into the forest. Thank the gods it didn't rain today, otherwise the footprints would all be washed away, leaving them with no further leads.
They went in silently, noting every small sound.
As they were coming into a clearing, Reyna put out a hand to stop them from approaching.
She listened carefully and could make out the sounds of soft shuffling footsteps.
She made a hand signal at Jason and he nodded, moving to the right to block any other escape routes and cover her as she confronted the culprit.
She took a deep breath and stepped into the clearing her gun raised.
("FBI OPEN UP" wait... that's not right is it)
In front of her stood a seemingly innocent person with blond hair and shocking blue eyes. He would seem like your typical guy you would meet in a supermarket if not for the blade he was cleaning.
It looked like a machete as far as she could tell but she wasn't an expert so she couldn't come to any definite conclusions just yet.
Next to his feet was a body.
"DROP YOUR WEAPON" she shouted, partly to the guy and partly to Jason who was hidden somewhere and calling for backup to notify them that the suspect was armed.
The guy just looked at her curiously.
He took a step forward.
"Don't" she warned, gritting her teeth. "I won't hesitate to shoot you."
To her surprise, he didn't move. Perhaps the threat of death was more effective than she thought. Who knew?
"Tell me, do you know who I am?" He said, his voice melodic as if singing.
She paused slightly at that.
He laughed not unkindly, it was a good look on him, if not for the whole murderer part.
"You don't do you? Well that's a shame."
Was he stalling? Maybe waiting for an accomplice? Reyna couldn't take that chance of waiting around and finding out.
"Sir, just put your weapon down and put your hands behind your head."
She instructed.
He smiled. Then bolted.
She cursed under her breath and fired a shot, aiming for his kneecaps.
It missed which was expected and she quickly gave Chase.
"Jason, where's that backup?" She half asked half shouted to the radio on her shoulder. "Suspect is on the run."
It crackled then Jason's voice came through. "They're close, and... RARA, I found these heaps of dead bodies."
She groaned silently to herself as she dodged a tree that wouldn't move out of the way. Uncooperative tree.
"Looks like we found ourselves a mass murderer." She said.
"Seems like it." Jason replied, sounding like he wanted to vomit.
She looked around her surroundings and noticed the trees thinning slightly.
The suspect was still in her sight and she was gaining ground.
It was going to be over very soon, and just like she had anticipated, he suddenly stopped.
The trees suddenly disappeared around her and she found herself on the edge of the cliff, cornering the guy.
He wasn't grinning anymore and he welded the machete(?) dangerously, like he had plenty of experience to get acquainted with it. And judging by the piles of corpses Jason had found, he had.
"Dude, it's over" she said. "Surrender your weapon."
His face flushed with defeat and he threw it off the cliff with a dejected sigh.
Reyna stared at him.
He only shrugged.
Backup came two minutes later and apprehended him without any further trouble.
Later, she would soon find out that his name was William Andrew Solace.
He was wanted in at least 13 states for homicide.
He got the chair 7 months later.
And that was that.
