Chapter 14: How Had This Come To Be?
N: Saxon, although he was told by Anglo to sleep, did not out of spite of what he did with the bug incident, so he laid on his bed until he heard a loud thud outside. Despite his movements being sluggish, the moment he saw Anglo and Derogan lying on the ground his adrenaline kicked in from seeing them hurt.
He rushed out of his room and came across a servant, who he told to find Mandoria quickly to help his son. When they rushed off he called another servant to follow him as he sprinted out into the greenery where the winged countries were, first going to check on Anglo.
Anglo, since he took the brunt of the fall, could barely move, as whenever he did, he contorted in pain but stayed conscious enough to see Saxon head to him. When he did, he told him to check on Derogan first.
"Are you sure," asked Saxon, his face filled with worry.
"I've survived this long through wars and conflict, a little fall will not stop me," he replied unconvincingly, as Saxon could hear the pain in his voice, but he went anyway while the servant stayed to check on Anglo.
Saxon knelt down next to Derogan and panicked when he saw that he wasn't moving. Not knowing what to do he gently lifted him up and took him inside, making sure that he didn't hurt the kid even more.
M: "Your Majesty, there is trouble!" The servant screamed, he threw open the doors to Mandoria's office with a bang, startling the king so bad that he knocked over his inkwell onto the paper he was writing on.
"Damn it, that's the fifth paper," he grumbled, then with a sigh he stood from his desk and looked to the human, "I hope the trouble is severe enough to ruin my alliance proposal to Russian Empire."
"Sire, Sir Saxon said he saw Sir Anglo and Prince Derogan injured outside," the servant exclaimed, "he spoke in a panicked voice so it must be very serious."
Mandoria's whole body went cold at the explanation, he bolted past the servant and ran as fast as he could to get to his son. First Mandara injured his wing and had gotten a cold, now Derogan and Anglo are hurt and he doesn't know how or how bad.
When the panicked father ran into the throne room he saw Saxon coming in with Derogan in his arms, it seemed to be a theme that the entity would be carrying Mandoria's injured sons to him. He took Derogan without a word and lay him down to examine him. There was a small gash above the teen's right eye from where he hit his head but otherwise looked uninjured.
"Derogan, can you hear me, please wake up," Mandoria asked, he was even more panicked than with Mandara because Derogan could have received serious brain damage. His fright escalated when his son didn't respond, he didn't move or make noise and even his breathing was barely noticeable.
N: The second Saxon saw that Derogan was in safe hands, he immediately rushed outside to check on Anglo, who was looked after by the servant. He came up to the servant and asked about Anglo.
"Sir Anglo expressed how his arm-," he pointed at Anglo's right arm, "-couldn't be moved without extreme pain, so there may be swelling, even a fracture."
Saxon's eyes widened at the news and asked the servant, "could you bring some splits and bandages so that I can treat the arm?" The servant nodded, he stood up and ran back inside to get the necessary supplies.
Saxon knelt beside Anglo and started to question him, asking if he was hurt anywhere else. When he was done, he crossed his arms and said, "Seriously, you scolded me for accepting a challenge from a kid and look what you just did."
"In my defense," Anglo croaked through a smile, "I challenged him."
The servant came back with the supplies and handed them to Saxon, who laid them next to him. He sighed as he grabbed Anglo's arm, he looked at him to apologize in advance, "this is going to hurt." Anglo nodded and braced for the incoming wave of pain.
Saxon pulled his arm so that if his bone was fractured it would line up in place, and he needed to position his arm so that the muscles were at the greatest extent of relaxation. While he did, Anglo shouted a bunch of words that he was happy the young princes were not around to hear. Saxon placed the two splints on either side of the arm, and with the servant's help, tightly bound them with the bandages. He checked on Anglo to see that he had passed out from the pain since at the time there were no anesthetics.
He gently picked him up, although he had to be careful of his wings and not harm Anglo even more, and slowly made his way to his room.
M: "Derogan wake up, please!" Mandoria cried, he hadn't moved his son from the throne room and was desperately trying to wake him up.
Derogan still wouldn't react to his father, he was knocked out so cold it was like trying to wake a corpse. Mandoria leaned down to check his breathing, it was so quiet and shallow that he couldn't hear or feel it.
"N-no," the king whispered, "no you can't do this Derogan, you can't leave me too."
When the teen again didn't respond Mandoria held him close and started crying, believing that he just lost his eldest son.
N: Saxon arrived at his room and laid Anglo down, trying to make him as comfortable as possible, worried that his wings went slack while he carried him. He sat next to him and held his hand, hoping his husband would wake up soon.
He was so stressed from Anglo being injured that when the servant came in to check on them Saxon snapped at him, but quickly apologized for his action.
"It is best if you leave, Sir Saxon, so Sir Anglo can rest, I will bring someone to see to him."
"But what," his voice broke a bit from worry, "what if he wakes up?"
"Then I will call you, but for now you should leave." Saxon reluctantly nodded and left, walking to the throne room to check on Mandoria.
Since not being a winged entity, he did not feel the sadness coming from Mandoria before he arrived at the throne room, but it was clear how devastated he was when Saxon walked in and he saw Mandoria holding on to Derogan. Saxon saw the country as strong and benevolent and wasn't ready to see the king crying over his son, so he stood at the doorway, not knowing what to do.
M: Mandoria didn't know Saxon was there, he was too busy crying over Derogan's apparent "death" to notice. How had this come to be, one minute his son was running around being a teenager, the next he was unresponsive in his father's arms.
"P-please Derogan, you c-can't die," the king sobbed, "I already l-lost your mother, I can't lose you t-too. Y-you and your brother are the b-best things that have e-ever h-happened to me, I c-can't live with myself if either of you p-perished, so please wake up Derogan, your b-brother needs you ... I-I need you."
As Mandoria wept, Mandara had arrived behind Saxon from feeling the sadness in his wings. "What's going on," he asked when he saw his father on the floor crying, he couldn't see his brother from behind Mandoria's wings.
N: Saxon turned around and was about to ask why Mandara was out of bed since he is ill, but he thought better, so he answered instead.
"It is your brother, something happened while he raced against Sir Anglo, and now both are unconscious," he looked at Mandoria and continued, "Anglo may have got the brunt of the fall, but Derogan has not been responding ever since I found him."
He walked into the room and headed towards the king, and he stepped aside to allow Mandara to get in.
M: Mandara's face became horrified and he ran to his father and brother. Mandoria looked up in surprise that Mandara was there but he didn't scold him for being out of bed, he just closed his eyes as he didn't want to see the kid's reaction to seeing his brother "dead".
Mandara didn't start crying like his father, he knew his brother was still alive, it took a lot more than a hit to the head to take his big brother down.
"Derogan, wake up, you're scaring everyone," he said, shaking Derogan a bit.
"Mandara, it's no use, h-he's gone," Mandoria whispered in despair.
"No he's not, he wouldn't go that easily," Mandara protested, "come on brother, stop fooling around, you don't want Father to think you're dead, do you?"
Derogan still wouldn't respond, so Mandara plucked a feather and started lightly brushing it on his brother's face, right where his nose would be if he was a human.
"Mandara, what are you doing," Mandoria asked.
"Shh, just watch Father," his youngest son responded, so the king stayed quiet and stared at Derogan for any sign of movement.
After a few minutes of feather tickling, Derogan's face finally started scrunching up until he let out a small sneeze. That was enough to wake him up and his eyes slowly opened, seeing his family's happy and relieved faces.
"Oh Derogan, thank the gods you're alive," Mandoria breathed out in relief, joyous tears now replacing his sorrowful ones.
N: Saxon smiled as he stood a few meters away from the family, happy and together, and was glad that Derogan was ok, but just then the servant walked in and called him to follow him. He solemnly obeyed as he was told about the situation.
"After an examination, we found that the shoulder joint of his wing was swollen, so we flipped Sir Anglo around so that he laid on his front and not putting any pressure on his wing."
When they opened the door, he noticed that Anglo was still unconscious, so he asked why he was brought here.
"While we were watching, Sir Anglo began to twitch suddenly despite being unconscious." Saxon dipped his head and walked so he was beside Anglo, and told the servant, "At least he is asleep, but he might be experiencing nightmares," he knelt beside the bed and held his hand, "life isn't sunshine and rainbows when you live a long time."
He began to try to calm him down, and for the most part, it worked, but when it didn't Saxon would gently stroke his flight feathers to ease him down.
M: Derogan, what happened, how did you hurt yourself," Mandara asked, softly petting his brother's feathers to keep him awake.
Derogan softly groaned but didn't respond, he had a bit of a blank stare and wasn't moving much either. Mandoria knew that his son most likely had a concussion so he stood with Derogan in his arms and took him to his and Mandara's room. Once the teen was laid down he immediately passed out again, this time Mandoria knew he was going to be ok, so just focused on treating the cut above his eye.
"I'm sorry I was out of bed, Father," Mandara apologized after a while, "I felt your sadness and I was worried."
"It's alright, my son," Mandoria reassured him, "you knew your brother was alive and you woke him up, so I'm glad you disobeyed me."
Mandara smiled a little then let out a soft yawn, even though he was sleeping most of the day he was still tired. When Mandoria was done patching up Derogan he tucked Mandara back into bed since it was getting late anyway, and once he was certain both his sons would be ok he left the bedroom and headed for Saxon's to check on him and Anglo.
N: Anglo couldn't stay asleep, so while Saxon was calming him down, he opened his eyes a sliver and smiled when he saw Saxon's efforts at helping him. He tried to stretch and move about, but he quickly stopped when his wing and arm hurt.
Saxon saw what he tried to do and was worried that he would pull something, so he helped Anglo ease him into a more comfortable position without injuring him. He got a pillow so that his head was raised and that Anglo faced Saxon, but he remained on his stomach for the sake of his wing.
"Are you ok?" asked Saxon, ready to provide Anglo anything.
Anglo narrowed his eyes at him and said, "yes, I'm fine, absolutely ecstatic. I can probably spontaneously go on a mile-long flight."
Saxon raised his hands in surrender and laughed, "ok, I understand that you are not great, you don't need to attack me like that."
Anglo tried to laugh but his lungs didn't allow him to so he just groaned instead and looked into the distance. Saxon saw this and asked, "another nightmare?"
"I simply dislike it when people mess with my wings," he grumbled, so Saxon sat next to him, faced him, and smirked, "well, Phoenix, I'm pretty sure you don't like to be messed with in general," and proceeded to tell him of an embarrassing story about him. Anglo tried to cover his face in embarrassment but failed.
M: Mandoria passed the servant that helped Anglo and they told him about the country's condition, the king frowned and sighed, it seemed that everything had gone south since Saxon first arrived, Mandoria didn't blame the entity for all the misfortune but it was starting to get on his nerves.
With another sigh, he kept walking to Saxon's room and knocked on the door, "Sir Saxon, I have come to see how Sir Anglo is doing, may I come in?"
N:
"-and remember when Spanish Empire mistook you for Scotland's father because both of you have a cross on your face," Saxon laughed as Anglo tried to give his best 'you are so annoying' face. He was about to continue when he heard the voice at the door and recognized it as Mandoria's.
"You may come in," he called out, and the moment the king stepped in, Saxon asked, "How is Prince Derogan?"
M: "He is resting," Mandoria said, "I believe he has a concussion and should hopefully be fine after a night's rest."
There was an awkward pause as Mandoria studied Anglo's injuries, the man who was supposed to be taking Saxon home was now unable to move.
"I am terribly sorry for your injuries," he solemnly apologized, his wings sagging with guilt, "I never intended for so much misfortune to happen while you came to collect Saxon, I promise to make it up to you both in any matter you wish, starting with helping you recover, Sir Anglo."
N: "Please, don't apologize," replied Saxon, "you have done so much for us already."
"And, Sir Mandoria, you have withstood Saxon's behavior, which in of itself is an achievement," muttered Anglo, then he smiled, "welcome to the club."
Saxon crossed his arms in indignation, "I'm not that difficult to handle," he muttered, but when Anglo glared at him he took back his word.
The entity looked out of the window at the setting sun, so he turned back to Mandoria and asked, "we're fine as we are, but I only ask if I could stay in another room since Anglo takes up the whole bed with his wings." He smirked when he heard Anglo grumble," I would stay here; however, sleeping on a chair would not help my posture."
M: Mandoria chuckled at Anglo's comment about Saxon, "as I said before, it was like I was raising three children when he came here," he teased.
When Saxon asked the question Mandoria nodded, "of course, the two rooms next to this one are open if you wish to remain close to Anglo."
After a bit of hesitation, Mandoria asked, "before I leave, I was wondering when you two would be fit to travel? I understand that sounds a bit rude but I'm beginning to think it is dangerous for you both to be here with all these accidents occurring."
N: Saxon slowly nodded and replied, "we understand. I would probably be able to travel by tomorrow, as I tend to heal faster compared to others, but Anglo, since he is no longer the head of a country, he heals slower than other countries. He may need a day," he looked at Anglo when he mumbled in disagreement, "or apparently two."
"I will be fit to travel, even if my wing has half-healed, it simply means I will not be able to fly home," Anglo added, but his shoulders sank when he realized he would not be able to fly for the next couple of days.
"Do not worry about us," concluded Saxon, "Anglo would not be moving anywhere, and I will most likely be here taking care of him.
Saxon was about to leave when Anglo asked him if he could stay a bit with him, at least until he slept, so Saxon agreed, and joked, "if I get a bad posture, I know who to blame."
M: Mandoria nodded slowly, he couldn't help but feel worried for Anglo and Saxon, but if they insisted they would be fine then they would.
"Ok," he said simply, "if you need anything just let me know, goodnight then," and with that, he turned and left the room.
Mandoria's nerves were once again on overdrive so instead of going to bed, he headed back to his office to keep working on the alliance proposal to Russian Empire, which still took him hours to get right and by the time he was finished he was so tired that he fell asleep at his desk.
N: Once Mandoria left, Saxon got a spare pillow from the bed, sat down on a chair, and used the pillow as a headrest. He watched over Anglo as his eyelids shut, he himself was going to sleep when Anglo spoke.
"What happened in Saxony?"
"Can this not wait," moaned Saxon, "you are injured and in need of sleep."
"You were gone for months," Anglo opened his eye a smidge, his golden eye staring at Saxon trying to analyze him, "and you want to delay your explanation. It better be good." He turned his head so that he no longer faced Saxon, which disheartened him to see, and fell asleep.
When Saxon was sure Anglo was asleep, he quietly left the room and went into the room next door designated by Mandoria. As he climbed into bed, he wondered if he should eventually tell Anglo, but he believed it best be told later.
