Chapter 13: The Race

M: Derogan shrugged, "I don't know, today Father and I were supposed to have lessons about me being king-" he said that last part with a hint of bitterness, "-but I would much rather let him stay busy with the intruders that are after Saxon."

The teen thought for a minute about what they could do, then his eyes landed on Anglo's golden wings and a lightbulb clicked, "say, how fast can you fly?" He asked, trying to subtly hint at a race.

N: Anglo tilted his head in confusion when he heard the bitterness but quickly forgot about it when he heard the question.

"I think that I can fly at reasonably fast speed," he said humbly with a hint of pride, he glanced at the open sky through a window and challenged, "however, we shall put it to the test. Will you, prince Derogan, accept my challenge to race me?"

M: Derogan beamed and flapped his wings in excitement, "Sir Anglo, I do accept your challenge for a race, it has been so long since I've flown against someone who can fly properly. I propose we fly to Mount Triverboia at the edge of the forest here, circle over to the Eye of Ora, and then come back."

He added with a smirk, "and don't worry, I promise I'll go easy on you."

N: Anglo flexed his wing muscles as they walked to where they decided would be the finishing line, and replied to his comment, "may the best flyer win." They stood far apart so that they would give each other enough wing space to take off.

He thought about what would make him lose. Sure, his wingspan is larger and he has soaring wings, but Derogan's maneuverability and knowledge of the area could give him the edge, but they would soon know.

He turned to Derogan and said, "on your marks. Get set."

"Go."

M: Derogan was off the ground milliseconds after the word was said and had a very good start. Even though his wings more resembled owl than songbird wings he was still fast at take-off and quickly left Anglo and his passive souring wings in the dust.

However, one thing Derogan never learned was to preserve stamina, so when the two were nearing the mountain the teen already felt a little winded from using up the majority of his energy too fast.

N: Anglo, taken aback from Derogan's fast take-off, slowly caught up to him as they approached the mountain. When he passed him, he looked back and was concerned that the prince looked a little fatigued, but he continued to the mountain.

M: Derogan growled at Anglo for passing him, mentally facepalming for using up his energy too fast, and as the countries circled around the mountain and headed for the Eye of Ora the teen was very far behind.

Derogan wasn't going down without a fight though, if he couldn't win with speed he would have to use smarts. He angled his wings to climb higher into the sky, he knew that the airspeed was much faster up there and would push him forward past Anglo.

Only problem; elliptical wings were not built to be at such high altitudes, so when Derogan reached the tailwinds he was having a very difficult time keeping control and was wobbling a lot. Being the arrogant teenager he was, Derogan ignored his disadvantage for the prize ahead.

N: Anglo sped as he circled over the Eye of Ora, and as he did, he looked back and was confused when he didn't see Derogan, so he did a quick barrel roll to find him, that was when he saw him climb higher into the sky.

While he headed to the finish line, he thought as to why the young country was doing that; however, he felt sure that he was far ahead enough to win.

M: Derogan's plan was working, he was gaining ground fast and passed Anglo quickly, now he just needed to get out of the tailwinds. Derogan tried to angle his wings to go down but that just led him to spiral out of control and start falling. He quickly caught himself once he was in the slower winds and tucked his wings in to dive the rest of the way towards the castle.

He was coming in way too hot so he partially unfurled his wings to slow down, instead, the air caused his wings to fling open so hard that he lost control again and started plummeting towards the earth, unable to catch himself with the speed he was falling.

N: When Anglo saw that Derogan had passed him, and being so close to the castle, he accepted defeat, slowed down, and started to glide. However, the second he saw him falling, he used the prince's technique and began climbing up. Having soaring wings he did it with more control than Derogan, and when he got to a suitable height, he tucked his wings and dove. He needed to do this so that he can gain enough speed to reach the young country.

Derogan was getting too close to the ground for his liking, so Anglo dove then opened up his wings so that he would try to intercept him at a 90-degree angle. When he caught him, he did not anticipate the additional weight so they followed the young country's trajectory, trying to flap his wings to slow down the fall. When they got close to the ground, Anglo flipped so that he would hit the ground first.

They crashed and Anglo did a small roll before stopping, he just laid there in pain as the world kept spinning.

M: Derogan yelped when he was caught, thinking that he hit the ground for a split second, but as he felt the arms tighten around him and the heavy breathing on his head, he realized Anglo saved him. However, the prince felt they were still falling and knew it was going to be a rough landing, so he closed his eyes and braced for impact.

When they hit, the force of the impact knocked Derogan out of Anglo's grasp and he hit his head hard on the firm ground, he opened his eyes weakly and only saw Anglo's blurry, unmoving figure, then everything went black.
