27. Suicidal
Jennifer lets my arm go as I back away from her, wide-eyed. Seeing her standing in front of me in the elevator alone made me realize how lethal she really was. I was terrified as I stood in here, no longer having the dagger on me to use for protection.
"So, Corey," Jennifer says, turning to me as she smiled slightly. "Tell me a little more about yourself."
It made me glad that she didn't know more about me. That meant that she didn't know I was a seer and could potentially ruin her whole plan. I had to make sure she didn't find out, or else that could mean the end of me. I was sure she'd stop at nothing to kill me if she found out I could see the future.
"There's nothing much to me," I say, for some odd reason asking myself in my mind what Stiles would do if he was in this situation. "I'm just a guy who hates people who look like they have hamburger meat for their face."
She laughs at me, knowing I was talking about her. "What, this face?"
I regretted saying that the moment her face formed into the monster I had seen earlier, her white eyes staring right into my own. By the time I looked away and back at her, she was already back to normal, laughing at me shyly. It made me nervous.
"You wanna know why I even have this face?" she says, looking away as she picked at the dirt under her nail. As she started her story, I decided to make a run for it as soon as those elevator doors opened.
"I'm sure you know Kali," she informs me, still not looking at me. "Well, she did this to me. I was her emissary before she had the nerve to turn her back on her pack. She killed all of them and then came after me...only I knew how to survive."
I lick my lips slowly, the scene I had seen awhile back of Jade killing that alpha flashing through my head for some reason. "That's fascinating. Now really, why am I here?"
She look at me then, lowering her hands. "You're leverage. If Derek or any of your other little friends try to come after me, I guess I'll just make sure they know I won't hesitate to kill you."
"That's a little harsh," I say, suddenly growing some confidence. I felt like I needed it if I was going to be talking to her. "But you could threaten to take my life away all you want; I don't care. It's not like I'm scared to die."
Jennifer smiles then, noticing something about me. "Maybe not, but you are scared you'll lose her; Allison. Am I right?"
My expression goes cold. "Don't you dare lay a finger on her."
"I won't unless she comes after me first," she adds, raising her eyebrows. "That is kind of cute though; you staying alive just for her."
I was tired of her talking about Allison. I wanted to make sure she knew that if she were to hurt Allison, she would have more than a messed up face, but that was before the elevators dinged open. My heart races as I start to go towards the opening to get away, but I stopped the moment when I heard claws clicking down the hallway, making my blood run cold.
Kali.
Jennifer stands still and waits as we both watch the end of the hall, seeing Deucalion and Kali come into view. Her eyes narrow as she snarls lowly, and it wasn't until then I saw that Jade was right behind the two of them, following them like a little puppy.
"Well won't you look at that," Deucalion says lowly, raising his chin slightly. "The two people I came here for are standing right in front of me."
I reacted then. I wan't going to let Deucalion gets his hands on me, but I could care less about Jennifer. My hand reaches for the buttons on the elevator as I jolt back inside, pressing it as if my life depended on it, which it did. Deucalion lifts his cane and picks a top piece off of it, revealing the same sharp piece I had seen awhile back in the school when the twins came after Scott, Isaac, and I. He throws it at Jennifer but misses by a few inches, burying itself in the wall.
Kali runs forwards then, claws extending. Jade holds her ground as she stares at the scene unfolding in front of her, and it made me wonder what she wanted. Her face told me that she wanted Kali to get us, but her eyes told me that she hoped we got away.
The doors slowly started to shut again just before Kali gets her hands in the crack, starting to pull them apart. I press my back against the walls of the elevator as I grab the railing, knowing that she was going to get inside. I really did believe that too, until Jennifer did something I didn't expect.
Suddenly, her eyes started glowing white once again as she held out her hands, pushing them forwards as if she was exerting some type of force. She lets out a low grunt as her hands slap the doors of the elevator, causing Kali to go flying back across the tile flooring. I don't get to see her much longer as the doors fully close, Jade's glance at me being cut off.
Jennifer looks over at me, out of breath. "Why in the hell do they want you?"
"Well, I'm a lot prettier than you."
--------
When we reached the third floor yet again, the first thing I did when I stepped out of the elevator was grab the dagger I had left behind the first time around. I thought for a moment about running away from her, but then I reconsidered. She was sort of on our side right now, and I needed help defending the alphas if they were coming after me. She showed me that she could do such a thing, so I figured I should stay close until I found the others again.
I wondered where they were.
My eyes examined the hall as blood covered it, one of the lights being knocked over as well. I worried that some of the blood was Allison's, but I held onto the hope that it wasn't. I could tell that some of it was black, meaning that it had to of been Cora's.
"What are you doing to Cora?" I ask Jennifer suddenly as I stared at the blood, desperate to know. I cared for Cora, and I didn't want to see her die or for Derek to lose another family member. He's already lost too much.
Jennifer glances over at me, giving me a pathetic look. "I'm not doing anything."
"Then how do you know how to fix her?" I ask, remembering Stiles telling me something like that over text earlier tonight.
She starts to walk forwards. "Just be glad I know how."
I might need to stick close to her, but I sure as hell didn't trust her. "What about Stiles' dad? I know you know where he is."
"I won't tell you that until I get out of here safely," she breathes, her eyes scanning each room as we walked past, heading farther down the hall. I tried to pick up on anything that showed where they went, but there was nothing.
It's quiet for a moment before I ask the question I was really dying to know. "Why are you doing this?"
"Stop asking questions," she snaps back to me, her eyes glancing over.
I urge further. "You said something about Kali doing that to you face, right? Is that the reason? You want to get back at her?"
"At them," she snarls now, meaning I found the trigger point. "They've taken too many lives. They don't deserve to be the ones breathing at the end of the day."
"And you're not taking lives either?" I scoff, not believing what she was saying.
She stops and looks at me then, her eyes cold. "Why can't any of you grasp that these are sacrifices? They're going to the greater good; you should know that. Every time someone dies, I get stronger. The stronger I am, the closer I am to killing all of them. Think about how many other lives I'll be saving."
"You sound just as crazy as Deucalion," I snap before walking around her, not wanting to hear her talk anymore. What she's doing isn't justifiable; she's just as bad as them, if not worse.
I stopped in the middle of the hallway as I focus on a small trail of blood going into one of the rooms, and it wasn't until I looked inside when I saw everyone. My heart races as I quickly bust through the doors, more than glad to have found them. I wondered if Jennifer followed after me or ran, but I didn't care at that moment.
Allison looks up, her eyes filled with tears. "Corey!"
I run over to her as she pulls me into a hug, her warmth filling my chest. No matter what happened, I always knew I had her at the end of the day, and that's what mattered the most.
"Where's Jennifer?" Derek asks, hope and anger mixed into his tone. The moment I pulled away from Allison to look back where I came from, Jennifer stepped inside, her face cold as stone.
Derek started to run for her, but Peter extends his hand and stops him. "Where in the hell did you think you were going!"
"I was trying to protect myself," she says calmly, a little too calm for my taste. "You can't blame me for that."
Allison pipes up now. "You had to have Corey to protect yourself?"
She looks over at her, narrowing her eyes. "He was just in the way."
"Look, that doesn't matter," I say, trying to get back onto topic. I could feel the time ticking away. "What matters is that we need to get out of here."
"Which is why I'm standing here," Jennifer snaps back, looking back over at Derek and the rest of them. "There is an alpha pack in this hospital that wants me dead. I'll help you save Cora and find your father after I'm out of here and safe. Only then."
Stiles steps forwards then. "If you want to prove you're the good guy, then heal her!"
"Not until I'm out," she holds her ground.
Peter snarls. "How about another method: we torture her."
"I'm up for that," Derek snaps as Scott holds him back, making sure they didn't do anything. Just as I thought a fight was going to break out, a voice sounds over the intercom, causing all of us to look up towards the speaker.
"Uhm, attention please. Mr. Deucalion—no, it's just Deucalion, requests you bring the woman you call Jennifer Blake to the E.R. Reception. Do this, and everyone else can leave. You have ten minutes."
It was Melissa. I could tell by her voice and by the look on Scott's face. No one says a word for a moment as we think, not sure what in the hell to do. Everything felt as if it was falling apart, which it was.
"He's not going to hurt her," Jennifer jumps to say, trying to save her own skin.
"Shut up!" Derek points in her face, tired of her talking.
"He won't," Jennifer snaps back, looking at Scott. "Scott, you know why. Tell them it's true."
Derek turns to Scott. "What does she mean?"
"Deucalion doesn't just want an alpha pack," Jennifer starts, noticing that Scott won't talk. "He wants perfection. That means adding the rarest of alphas to his ranks."
It hits Peter first. "A true alpha. Our little Scott."
"What's that?" Stiles asks, sounding so broken it hurt.
Peter looks up at Scott. "The kind that doesn't have to take or steal their power. One that can rise just by the force of their own will."
"It doesn't matter," Scott says quickly, hating everyone's staring at him. "We still need to get her out of here."
"Scott, your mom-"
"My mom said there's one more ambulance coming in twenty minutes," Scott cuts Stiles off, putting the task at hand to work rather than to worry about his mother. I couldn't decide if he was brave or crazy for doing that. "I don't think we've been here for that long. So if we can get down to the garage, we can get out of here."
"I have another idea," I say, my mind still stuck on what Melissa said. "Deucalion wants me too; what if he settles for just me and lets your mother go?"
Allison looks at me. "I'm not letting you go with him-"
"If it will save his mother, I will," I say, looking at Scott dead in the eyes. I could tell that he was grateful for me to offer, but he also looked as if he would never let me do that. "We're running out of time."
Stiles speaks up then. "What if he doesn't just want you? What if he takes you and then comes after Jennifer?"
"Then I guess we'll figure out what to do then," I breathe, too many bad things that could go wrong with this plan flashing through my mind. "I have to try."
"I can't let you do that," Scott argues, just like I knew he was going to. "Let's just get down to the garage first, and then we'll worry about my mom. She's a tough girl; she'll be alright."
I tried to believe him, but I had a feeling that he knew that he was even lying to himself. I knew that I needed to give myself up to Deucalion to get her back, and not even Allison or Scott could talk me out of it.
I just hoped that it would work.
