Chapter 1: Forest Breeze
"Hurry up, Kotsu!" I ushered to my best friend, running through the bushes, holding two rabbits in my right hand.
Within a moment, a Deer flashed past me, followed by a stray arrow.
"Dammit! I had that one, Iyosa, but you had to yell." Kotsu got frustrated, climbing down from his vantage point on a nearby tree. At this, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Sorry, bud." I said between laughs.
"Yeah, well, I hope you'll be okay with eating only those rabbits for dinner tonight." Kotsu pointed out.
"How about you start looking for berries and wood for the fireplace, I'll keep hunting." He continued as he came towards me and took the Rabbits from my hand.
"Alright." I replied, searching through the bushes nearby, finding which ones were good to eat and not.
After many hours had passed, Kotsu and I had reconvened near a large rock in the middle of the forest. I had put all the Berries in a small pouch tied to my belt and carried a surplus of dry wood in my arms. I went ahead and dumped all the sticks on a clearing Kotsu had organized to make sure the grass wouldn't catch fire.
"And the Berries?" He asked as he took off his gloves to reveal the Rune on his hand as it glowed a bright Orange-Red.
"All accounted for." I grinned, removing the pouch of berries from my belt and tossing them to Kotsu.
Kotsu had jolted upright from the pile of wood and barely managed to catch the berries with his opposing hand.
"Don't toss the Berries at me when I'm about to use a Fire Rune." He replied calmly yet sternly, although he must have been scared half to death. That's just something Kotsu tends to do. Sometimes he'll get a bit frustrated about something, and other times, he'll just act completely plain towards a problem. Something that definitely makes up for my recklessness at times.
"Uh... yeah, okay." I nodded, surprised at his reflexes.
Kotsu extended his hand once more over the bundle of wood, and as the Rune was cast, the wood lit aflame. He proceeded to stand up and walked over to the carcasses of the Deer he had hunted. They hung upon a higher tree branch. He began to skin the Deer and pulled out any edible Meat, such as Venison from it. While he carved out the Deer, I took the Rabbit meat he had pre-prepared and hung it over the fire.
I sat, staring into the fire, helplessly reminiscing that day. It had been almost a year since Ayase Village burned to the ground before us. Hunting for the foretold Relic had been our only motive for months now, but to no avail. The Forest seems to be endless, although we haven't traveled any more than a mile each day. Not to mention these runes. Kotsu's Fire Rune has been the most helpful thus far, while my Rune is only useful in actual fights. If I had been born with a Water Rune, everything might have been easier in terms of Survival. That's just the way it is.
All that way back in Ayase village, Kotsu and I never really had parents. We only had the grand elder to turn to for help and advice, if he wasn't busy with other ordeals. To earn our place in the village, Kotsu would hunt wild animals with his bow, and I would gather various Berries, Edible Leaves, and help grow crops in the village farms. Not many opportunities arrive to be able to hunt with only a sword in hand.... except that one time I beheaded a hostile Bear.
"Iyosa, how's the rabbit doing? I can really smell it from here!" Kotsu called as he continued to skin the deer. I had completely lost track of time, and looked up to see a Well cooked Rabbit. If it was on any longer, it would start to burn. I took the rabbit off of the Wooden Rotisserie, and lay it upon a fresh, large leaf I had found earlier this morning to serve as a plate. Kotsu and I usually stayed in the same place for a while before moving forward, just to stay familiar with the areas. If we were to run north for days upon end, we'd surely be out of the forest eventually. However, covering 3,000,000 acres isn't something you can do overnight.
I always wondered why we lived in such a large forest, so far from any other civilization. However, the truths Kotsu and I salvaged from the Grand Elder's Documents after the destruction of Ayase Village were... astounding, to be said in the least.
Ayase Village, the land of multiple colors... is the home of "Runeweavers". If the world were to know the powers Ayase village held... they would have been gone a long time ago. Kotsu and I, after we uncover the Relic, will use it to bring justice for Ayase Village. Someone did something to our home.
And we're travelling far and wide to uncover the truth.
