Ch 4: Explanation
Dabin's P.O.V.
"Well, my name is Kang Dabin and I was home when the apocalypse began. My mother came home bitten, and I had to kill her with my own hands." I started.
"We don't need a sob story. Four minutes and fifteen seconds." Shownu interrupted. I ignored his interruption and continued to tell my story.
"I couldn't stay in the house after I had to-that... Happened," my voice got caught in my throat, but I gulped and kept talking, "so I packed up what I could, and I left. I had nowhere to go, no one to go to, and the city was in complete chaos. I wandered about aimlessly for weeks, avoiding anything that looked or sounded like trouble and I eventually found my way out of the city and into the country, still alone. I had thought that since the countryside had been less densely populated there'd be less zombies; I was so wrong.
I came across a huge horde of them. There was no way around and many had spotted me by the time I could formulate an escape route. I was running out of options."
*flashback to the hoard*
My breathing was so loud I felt like it could be heard over the hundreds of groans and gargles coming out of the undeads' throats. I could feel the adrenaline pumping throughout my body and my head was throbbing from the increased blood flow.
As they approached me with their arms reaching out for the taste of living flesh, I knew that I was being cornered.
Desperately, I tried to climb the fence to escape, but my muddy shoes kept slipping off of the smooth boards.
10 meters. 7 meters. 5 meters. Closer and closer they scuffled. I was sobbing at this point, slowly losing hope. Suddenly, the closest one grabbed my arm and tried to take a chunk out of my arm. It managed to sink its teeth into my forearm before I drove a kitchen knife through it's skull.
"Fuck!" I yelled. It hurt like a bitch, but that extra adrenaline allowed me to scale the fence in one go, preventing me from becoming complete fresh meat.
I ran for what seemed like hours until I slumped at the base of a tree, exhausted. I looked at the bite wound on my arm and sighed; at that point, I welcomed death.
I sat there for hours, until the sun began to set. I expected the fever, and the delirious hallucinations that hit every victim before they turned, but it never came. I felt the throbbing pain of the bite and the soreness of my legs, nothing else.
*end of the flashback*
"Wait, so you were bitten and you didn't turn? Bullshit. For all we know, a dog could have bitten you" Kihyun said, incredulous. I held up my forearm revealing the scar from what had happened years ago.
"This is too small and rounded to be a dog, or any animal other than a human, bite." I twisted around from my to reveal more bite scars on my shoulder that weren't covered by the straps of my tank top. "I've collected plenty of evidence to prove my point." I stated bitterly.
"And the cuts on your wrists? Did you do that to yourself?" Shownu asked, gesturing towards them with his gun which was still pointed at me.
"No. Dear God, I didn't do this to myself. I didn't survive up to this point just to kill myself that way."
"Then who did?"
"Ah, well... I'll have to start where I left off then..."
*flashback once again*
After I was sure I wasn't going to turn, I decided to continue my destination-less journey deeper into the forest. I didn't get very far when I heard a man yell and a whole bunch of gunshots. Curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to venture over to where I thought I heard the sounds, being sure to stay hidden.
I spotted a group of three young adults, maybe a few years older than me in a small clearing surrounded by corpses. Two of them had their guns pointed straight at the skull of the third who seemed to have been bitten.
"I'm sorry Minseo, but you know how it goes. You've been my best friend for as long as I can remember. I'm sorry." one of them choked out, on the verge of tears. Out of pure instinct I stepped out of my hiding spot and said:
"Wait, I might be able to help."
I startled the living hell out of all three of them, who had immediately pointed their guns towards me.
"Who are you and how can you help?" One of them asked.
"My name's Dabin and I might be able to cure him..." I blurted out, "Now if you want even a sliver of a chance for your friend to live, I suggest you move out of the way."
Surprisingly, they obliged, I guess that they were desperate enough to trust a stranger to save their friend.
I kneeled next to Minseo, pulling out a small, clean knife. Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing or whether it would work but I thought: "it wouldn't really hurt to try, would it?"
"What exactly are you going to do with that knife? Cause if you kill him, I swear to God-" his friend started.
"I know it's hard to do, but just trust me" I spoke out calmly, "Minseo, can you let go of it?" I asked softly, gesturing to his bite wound. He whimpered, prying his hand off of it.
"Please, I'm not ready to die." He cried out quietly.
"Shhh. It's all right. I'm not going to let you." I said in a soothing manner.
I went ahead and sliced the palm of my hand, I winced at the pain but continued anyways. Closing my palm, I squeezed the blood out, dripping it over his bite wound.
"What is this witch doctor shaman crap? I thought you would cure my friend! This is bullshit!" One of his friends yelled.
I got up while wiping the blood onto my shirt, and looked at him with a strangely calm gaze.
"I'll stay here with you guys and your friend. If he turns, then you can kill me. If he doesn't then you'll let me know where I can find some supplies and we'll both be on our merry way." I stated with confidence.
"Deal." the temperamental one said.
So we waited, and waited, and waited. Hours passed and nothing happened. No fever, no hallucinations, and definitely no sudden craving for human flesh.
"I-I'm alive." Minseo stated in disbelief. I was just as surprised as him, of course I didn't let that show.
"So about those supplies..." I started, snapping the temperamental one out of his amazement.
"Oh, right. We're part of a huge group that's taking refuge in this reinforced bunker that's not far from here. We can negotiate supplies there." He said, still incredulous at the events that had occurred.
So we headed to the bunker. Our group was greeted by at least twenty guns cocked and pointed at our heads.
"You have someone that has been bitten. He must be given mercy as soon as possible." Someone in his early to mid thirties who I assumed was in charge stated with a hard tone.
"No, Mr. Ahn, you don't understand. Minseo has been bitten hours ago and he's fine!" Woojin, the temperamental one, exclaimed.
"I'm fine!" Minseo echoed.
"Impossible..." Mr. Ahn stated.
"Hold him under quarantine and see for yourself!" Woojin challenged.
And that's exactly what they did and Minseo was still fine.
"This is impossible... Minseo are you immune?" Ahn Hyenam asked him.
"I don't think so. But she," he pointed to me "is."
Hyenam turned to look at me as if he had just noticed my presence.
"Who are you and what have you done to acquire the cure?" He asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Kang Dabin, and I think I was just born with it..."
"What did you do to cure him?"
"I got some of my blood into his system and he was fine afterwards." I responded.
"Fascinating... Why, Ms. Kang, would you like to join us for dinner tonight? It's the least I could do to thank you for saving one of our own." He offered.
"That would be amazing." I responded with a smile.
That evening, I ate the biggest meal I had since the apocalypse. Hyenam would not stop asking about my immunity even though I repeated multiple times that I had only discovered it a few hours prior and that I did not know where it came from. Then, he offered me to stay overnight to rest before leaving the next day.
"It is dark outside and you must be exhausted. We have plenty of extra beds here, please, rest for the night." I knew that he would not take no for an answer, so I took his offer. I had missed sleeping in a bed anyways.
But then, in the middle of the night, I was grabbed and a cloth soaked in chloroform was placed on my mouth and nose and after a bit of a struggle I passed out.
*end of flashback*
"When I woke up, I had found myself strapped to a table in a cell with a needle drawing blood out of my arm." I stated, my voice starting to shake. I had long passed my five minute limit, but Shownu had lowered his gun and was listening intently with his other members. "I screamed and thrashed but Hyenam only stared and said 'The residents of this bunker thank you for your noble sacrifice. You're saving the lives of many people.'
"They continued to draw my blood every day to the point where I was barely clinging on to life. Turns out, they were injecting my blood into everybody twice a month like some sort of immunity shot."
"Wouldn't people have bad reactions with different blood types?" Wonho asked.
"My blood type is O negative." I responded with a bitter smile, "the universal giver."
"So after a while, they ran out of sanitized medical equipment to safely drain my blood and they couldn't risk giving me an infection and killing me that way, so they began to slit my wrists to bleed me out slowly, stitching me back up right when I was at the brink of death hoping that they'd find me alive the next day. Both fortunately and unfortunately, my will to live was too strong to just let me die in that wretched cell. Eventually, a zombie had breached their security just at the right time. The residents' 'immunity shots' had just worn off, so they were vulnerable and they had grown weak and reliant on Hyenam and his soldiers to protect them, so many were turned or they ran. I was finally able to escape and here I am now." I said, gesturing myself and the area around me.
"How long were you there? At the bunker, that is." Hyungwon asked.
"Ah, I lost count, but judging by the date, I would say almost two years." The boys let out a collective gasp. "It's left my wrists lookin pretty ugly, too." I attempted to joke, but no one laughed. I cleared my throat, "Anyways, now that you know that I'm not out to turn you all, I will take you to that now abandoned bunker and let you guys take whatever you please. Then, I'll leave and we'll never see each other again. Okay? Okay." I said with an overly sweet voice and smile.
"Okay, fine." Shownu sighed. "Pack up camp, and let's go." he ordered his group and they all went to work.
