Chapter 127 - Devil's Backbone
Elijah hummed as he walked up to Morgan and Fleur's door, eager to spend some time with Hank.
"It's open!" Fleur shouted down.
Elijah opened the door, walking inside,"I have arrived."
"Welcome." Morgan chuckled.
"How are things going?" He asked.
"Good. Flo's just coming with Hank." Morgan nodded.
"Great." Elijah smiled,"I am ready to be of service."
"Hank's hyper, so have fun." He laughed.
"I will." Elijah pointed.
"Eli." Fleur smiled as she walked downstairs.
"Flo." Elijah hummed.
"Someone's happy to see you." Fleur pointed as Hank tried to reach out to Elijah.
"Oh, hello sweetheart." Elijah held his arms out.
Hank babbled as Fleur helped Hank go into Elijah's arms.
"Aren't you just the cutest?" Elijah hummed.
Hank took ahold of Elijah's finger and immediately began to try to put it in his mouth.
"Honey, you can't eat me." Elijah tried pulling his finger away.
"He'll try." Fleur chuckled.
"I am not edible." Elijah reached down to tickle Hank.
Hank giggled and looked up at Elijah.
"Have you been good?" Elijah asked him.
"As good as he can be." Morgan hummed.
"Very good." Elijah smiled,"Do you think he knows he's my favourite nephew?"
"Have you told Henry and Micheal?" Fleur gasped.
"They don't need to know." Elijah shook his head.
"Might need to tell JJ." Fleur chuckled.
"Nope."
"No?" Fleur laughed.
"No." He repeated.
Hank giggled and clapped his hands.
"Is that funny, little man?" Eliajh chuckled.
"He finds everything funny."
"Have I told you how much I love him?"
"All the time." Fleur hummed.
"Well.. I love him." Elijah kissed the top of his head.
"He loves you too." Morgan patted his arm.
"How could he not?" Elijah's raised a brow.
"You will have to fight Addy for him." Fleur pointed.
"I will." Elijah nodded,"And I will win."
"Over Addy?"
"..Yes."
"You sure?"
"Nope."
"So if I were..to call her right now?" Fleur grabbed her phone.
"Don't you dare." Elijah pointed.
"I'm joking." Fleur hummed.
"Better be."
"You wanna come help with breakfast?"
"Of course." He nodded.
"Let me see the little man." Morgan held out his hand.
Elijah sighed, holding out Hank,"I'll be back soon."
"We'll be waiting." Morgan waved Hank's hand.
"Goodbye, Hank." Elijah waved as he headed for the kitchen.
"You okay?" Fleur asked.
"Mhm, you?" Elijah hummed.
"Stressed." Fleur sighed.
"I can imagine." Elijah patted her back,"A little baby."
"A little nightmare." Fleur chuckled.
"Just like you then, huh?" Elijah winked.
"Hey." Fleur nudged him.
"I'm just saying." He hummed.
"It's so different than with Addy.. I only had her for a few hours a day if I were lucky." Fleur nodded.
"Then when you got her back she wss.. Well, child-age." Elijah agreed,"It's going to be hard, but I know you'll get through this."
"And I've got help." Fleur smiled.
"Lots of help." Elijah nodded.

"Two years ago, twelve year old Adam Morrissey vanished on his way home from school from Franklin, Virginia. At the time he was living with his mother who had just gone through a bitter divorce." Garcia spoke as everyone sat down.
"I remember this. His mother and local authorities believe he was abducted by his father and taken to Mexico." Rossi pointed.
"Yes. And then three months after that, thirteen year old Jimmy Bennett went missing from Richmond, Virginia seventy five miles away. He was in foster care because both of his parents were drug addicts. He had run away once before, so police just assumed that it happened again." Garcia explained.
"The cases were though to be unrelated until last night." Hotch nodded.
"That is when prison guards at Fletcham Correctional Center intercepted an incoming package containing the clothes both boys were last seen in." Garcia showed images of the clothes.
"DNA samples from skin cells found on the clothing were confirmed to match the missing boys, so we know the items are authentic." Hotch added.
"And there's dried blood on the clothes. That's not a good sign." Tara shook her head.
"Who was the package being sent to?" Reid asked.
"Antonia Slade." Garcia showed the picture of Slade.
"You don't say." Elijah blinked.
"She was a serial killer captured fifteen years ago, right?" Fleur looked up.
"The runaway killer." Rossi nodded,"She was a clinical social worker and she started this runaway hotline in order to lure her preferred victims, young teens, to her home. Gideon was on that case."
"It says here that she lived with her long time lover, Phil Garmin, who shot himself when police arrived. They found nine bodies. Five girls, four boys. Wrapped in plastic, encased behind the drywall of her basement. All the victims had been shot in the back of the head." Reid read the file.
"It drove Gideon crazy that she never talked about the murders after her arrest. She never explained why she did it." Rossi sighed.
"And she never has." Hotch shook his head.
"Any information on the package istelf?" Tara asked.
"The package was postmarked in Roanoke. The return address was the prison. When police went to question the post office, no one could recall who sent it." Garcia pointed.
"Okay, I'm going to ask the obvious question here, but do we really think these boys are still alive?" JJ asked,"Based on the clothes, I'd say it doesn't bode well."
"Well, there is the timing of the package. I mean, why send it now, two years after the kidnappings, if the boys have long been dead?" Fleur tilted her head.
"Someone might be trying to replicate one of Antonia's crimes." Elijah suggested.
"Well, the boys were too young when they were taken, but they'd be the right age now. What if Antonia's orchestrating this entire thing from behind bars?" Tara suggested.
"We need to talk to her." Hotch agreed.
*********************************
"You must be Agent Hotchner." Shulman walked through.
"Yes, sir. This is Agent Jareau and Agent Howards." Hotch nodded, shaking his hand.
"Pleasure. I'm the warden here. Bart Shulman." Shulman introduced himself.
"How long has Antonia Slade been in solitary?" JJ asked.
"Four weeks. We found a road map of the state in her cell. She claims that a groupie sent it and we missed it during mail inspection." Shulman explained.
"Would you send a copy of her mail and visitor logs to our analyst in Quantico, please?" Hotch asked.
"No problem." Shulman nodded.
"Thank you." Fleur hummed,"Did she have a lot of groupies?"
"More than you'd think. But every so often some sick son of a bitch shows up outside our gates hoping she'll see him." Shulman sighed.
"And does she?" Hotch raised a brow.
"No. No, other than her lawyer when she was first incarcerated, she refused to see anyone till now." Shulman shook his head as they walked to her cell.
"Open the gate." A guard ordered.
"Did she say anything when she agreed to see us?" Hotch raised a brow.
"Yes. She'll only see you one at a time. She insisted on it. She says too many people make her feel claustrophobic. She's in C-306. And remember not to take anything from her or give her anything." Shulman told them.
Hotch nodded and walked down the corridor, entering C-306.
*********************************
After meeting with Slade, which turned out to be a fail, she threw a piece of paper at Hotch before he left. Now, back at the station, everyone gathered as Reid opened it.
"All work and no play makes Agent Hotchner a dull boy'." Reid read the paper,"She's always refused visitors until now. So why play a mind game?"
"Well, to be honest, rid she really have a choice with us showing up? Maybe her silence was a form of protest." Fleur suggested.
"It could be a gender bias. And Hotch represents the establishment. Plus, I'm sure she hasn't forgotten the BAU put her away." Elijah added.
"It could be about power and control." Hotch nodded.
"Now, that's true. I mean, she chose victims she could easily dominate, and even after she was arrested, she withheld information to maintain control." Tara agreed.
"So she needs to feel important." Fleur looked up.
"What are you thinking, Hotch?" Elijah asked as he watched Hotch stare at the letter.
"She was writing in a notebook when I walked in. And after I introduced myself, she turned the page and wrote this." Hotch held up the letter.
"There's an imprint of what she was writing before on that note." Reid realized.
"Get that to the lab." Hotch handed the letter to Reid.
*********************************
Next, Fleur was asked to speak with Antonia. When she reached her cell, she was cleaning a wound on her ankle.
"Hi Antonia. I'm Agent Fleur Howards from the BAU." Fleur tilted her head.
"This ulcer is from diabetes. Had it over a year. Just won't heal." Antonia commented, not looking up at her,"Doc says if it gets infected, i might just have to have my foot cut off. So, what can I do for you, Agent Howards from the BAU?"
"I think you know. Will you tell me about the missing boys and who send their clothes to you?" Fleur hummed.
"Well, that's a heavy subject. We just met. Why don't you tell me something about yourself first." Antonia suggested as she stood up, limping closer.
"What would you like to know?" Fleur looked at her.
"Where are you from?" She asked.
"Versailles, France." Fleur nodded.
"A foreign girl. Grew up in a little town?"
"Mhm."
"Uh-huh, I grew up on a farm." Antonia tiled her head,"You an only child?"
"No." Fleur shook her head.
"I was. But I suppose it was good training for solitary confinement." She hummed.
"..So about those clothes that were sent to you?" Fleur asked.
"Those clothes- Everybody's asking me about those clothes. It's getting tedious." Antonia groaned,"They were sent by a zealous fan. Do you have any idea how much mail I get? Ridiculous, fawning letters. I barely read 'em before I toss 'em."
"Well, you must have some idea who sent the clothes to you. Did he tell you a package was on its way?" Fleur tilted her head.
"He? Well.. Well, now that you mention it, it could be Steven. Or John. Yeah. He had a crush on me. Or maybe it was Edward. Tom, Dick or Harry." Antonia listed names, looking around.
"Look, the missing boys were taken-" Fleur began.
"How long have you been with the BAU?" Antonia questioned.
"Eleven years." Fleur sighed.
"Are you respected as much as Agent Hotchner?" Antonia asked.
"Yes." Fleur answered.
"Really? You and he are treated just exactly the same?" She raised a brow.
"Other than the fact that he's head of the team, yes." Fleur nodded.
"Well, Agent Howards, just in the short time that we've been speaking, I can tell that you're very capable and intelligent." Antonia told her,"I have no doubt in my mind that you are smarter than Agent Hotchner so therefore you should be in charge of the BAU. But you're not, are you? Because the world first and foremost sees you as a young, attractive woman, am I right? But if I were you, I'd just stop worrying about being nice and well-liked and just.. Take charge."
"But you're not me." Fleur shook her head.
"No, unfortunately I'm not. I'm just old and withering on the vine and I can barely walk." Antonia sighed,"Do you know what I crave now? Comfort and familiarity. And if you do something for me, I think I can do something for you."
"And what's that?" Fleur tilted her head.
"Now, I know I'm never gonna be released, but I would like a transfer to a prison back home in Kentucky, so I can smell the Bluegrass Hills again." Antonia hunmed.
"It's not possible." Fleur shrugged.
"Well, until you can step up and make that possible, I got nothing more to say to you." Antonia turned and walked away from her.
Fleur sighed and walked out of the room.
*********************************
Next Elijah went to speak with Antonia. When he walked up to the cell, she was eating.
"My name is Agent Elijah Deans. This is a copy of a letter you wrote earlier. What happened to the original?" Elijah asked, holding up the paper.
Antonia gave a small chuckle,"Oh my. You're not terribly bright, are you? I threw it out. It's been incinerated by bow. Poof."
"I know there's a cipher in it. You wouldn't have gone through taht much trouble to destroy it." Elijah shook his head.
"You've got everyone fooled, don't you, calling yourself an Agent?" Antonia didn't look up at him.
"Who is this for, and who helped you send it?" Eliajh questioned.
"You're really a phony, a puffed-up, little fraud. Is that why you're sad?" Slade hummed.
"I know what you're doing and it won't work. You're treating us all in the opposite way that we're used to being treated because you want to throw my team off balance." Elijah sighed.
"I guess you're not a complete idiot. I still think you look sad. Why is that?" Slade tilted her head.
"Because two boys are missing." Elijah told her.
"It goes deeper than that.. I haven't seen it in a while, but it looks very much like.. Grief?" Slade guessed,"Who'd you lose? Someone in your family? A good friend?" She looked at him,"..Ah, what's your friend's name?"
Elijah stayed quiet, he really didn't want to talk to her.
"Don't you want to know about the missing boys?" She taunted.
Elijah swallowed,"..Derek Morgan. We worked together."
"Derek Morgan." Antonia repeated,"I'm guessing you have to suppress your grief around your teammates because they aren't quite as affected. They didn't lose a protector, did they?"
"What about the boys?" Elijah asked quietly.
"You've lost protectors before, haven't you? That's what makes it so hard, history repeating itself." Antonia sighed,"Well, now we got that out of the way..Give me the letter. Do you wanna know the cipher key?"
Elijah nodded, tensing his hand as she grabbed it through the bars.
"It's okay. Relax." Antonia hummed, keeping a grip on his hand, leaning down and throwing up food onto his hand and writing with her finger,"They took away my pencils. This is the man you're looking for. And by the way, in case you were wondering, those boys are still alive. But for how long? Off you go, little Elijah."
*********************************
Elijah and Hotch were walking in the BAU hallway to the Conference Room, Elijah still thinking about Slade.
"She wrote 'CH' in my hand, but there's no one in the mail or visitor logs with those initials." Elijah shook his head,"We were talking about the letter at the time, so it could have something to do with the cipher."
"Hey, so we checked with the Roanoke post office. We showed them photos of Antonia's Virginia based fans. Still nothing." Fleur sighed.
"Let's think about the Unsub. We know he's one of her followers. It's plausible he sent the clothes to try and impress her." Rossi pointed.
"He kidnapped the boys just to get her attention?" Hotch asked.
"We talked about someone trying to replicate one of her crimes." JJ looked around.
"She never held two boys captive for a long period, though." Reid tilted his head.
"No, but Antonia did take two boys at the same time. One of them escaped. Hector Ramon. He and another runaway he befriended, Sam Meckler, called a hotline one night when the temperature dropped below freezing." Rossi explained.
"Yeah. It says Hector described her as a loving mother at first. She made soup and sandwiches.." Fleur looked at the file,"I had a warm bed to sleep in for the first time in a year. But after a week or so, she changed. She would get mad about small things. If we left the cap off the toothpaste, or spilled something, she would say, you're old enough to understand the rules. You must atone when you break them. Pretty soon I knew she wasn't the nice lady she pretended to be, and she wouldn't let us leave."
"When did he escape?" Reid asked.
"We need to talk to Antonia again, but I think we've been approaching this wrong. It's time we use her own rules against her." Rossi hummed.
That's when Garcia walked in,"I just talked to the prison. They're looking at inmates and personnel who've had regular contact with Antonia Slade. One guard in particular, Orel Wilbur, has had more contact than anyone. He's picked up extra shifts in units where Antonia has been held, and this week he volunteered to fill in for a sick guard in solitary."
"That can't be a coincidence." Elijah shook his head.
*********************************
"It's important for Antonia to feel dominant. She establishes this by setting precise rules." Rossi began.
"It means she wouldn't engage in a long-term relationship with the Unsub if he wasn't submissive or detail-oriented enough to follow these rules." JJ continued.
"Her former partner Phil Garmin fit that model perfectly. He was an accountant, who, according to acquaintances, was robotic. After he met Antonia, he had no other social contacts." Reid nodded.
"So the Unsub we're looking for is someone similar to Phil, a loner who is emotionally dependent on Antonia and wants for her direction." Elijah sighed.
"Okay, I have managed to narrow down the John Smiths in Virginia from 2,780 people down to 1,900 by eliminating anyone over the age of seventy and anyone under the age of eighteen. But I still need more parameters." Garcia pointed.
"John Smith has to be a pseudonym." JJ shook her head,"The guard said Antonia wrote to different men, but what if it was the same man using different aliases?"
"That's possible, but it doesn't hurt to keep looking." Fleur wondered,"Garcia, try single men who live alone and have a profession that required attention to detail. Health care, science, math."
"Forging ahead with surgical precision." Garcia nodded.
*********************************
Antonia was on the jet with the team, going to help them.. Or so she claimed.
"So is this the private jet for all inmates or just me?" Antonia asked.
"Well, you're not special, if that's what your asking." Tara told her.
"I don't want you to think that I'm ungrateful for this prison transfer, so I'm gonna share something with you. The man you're looking for is trying to duplicate the circumstances of the two boys I crossed paths with." Antonia began.
"Yeah, we figured that out already." She nodded,"You told us you'd give us his location if we transferred you."
"Well, I don't know exactly where he is at the moment." Slade shrugged
"Other than mentioning the Bluegrass Hills, did she talk about any other connection to Kentucky?" Rossi asked.
"She told Flo she grew up on a farm." Elijah shurgged.
"She says she wants to go home, but somehow, she doesn't strike me as the sentimental type." Rossi shook his head,"Why the transfer?"
"What if that's where the Unsub is?" Elijah's eyes widened,"She wants to witness the murders."
*********************************
Meanwhile back at the BAU, Fleur, JJ and Hotch rushed into Garcia's office after she called them through.
"You found something?" Hotch asked.
"Yes. It is one of Antonia's earlier patients when she first started as a social worker in Kentucky. Claude Barlow. He saw her twice a week for three years. Then she moved to Virginia. He followed her here. He showed up at her new place of employment, the Centre for Social Services, multiple times, hoping to speak to her." Garcia informed them.
"And did he?" Fleur leaned down.
"Uh, that's unclear." Garcia shook her head.
"The center filled a restraining order barring him from the premises for threatening and erratic behaviour." Hotch tilted his head.
"And that seemed to work because he disappeared until a month after her murder conviction. Then, he showed up at the prison under the alias Peter Evans, hoping to speak with her but she refused." Garcia explained.
"This could be extreme transference. As a patient, he had a pathological attachment to his therapist." Fleur sighed.
"And he couldn't move on after she terminated the therapy." Hotch shook his head.
"I'm guessing Antonia encouraged the dependence." JJ pointed.
"Not only that, he has a history of dangerous behavior. She could be purposely fueling that." Hotch sighed.
Hotch then stepped to the side to call Rossi before hanging up and walking back as Garcia spoke.
"Check this out. It's a home business fun by Peter Evans, Aka Claude Barlow, in Roanoke. Didn't boy wonder say he worked with computers?" Garcia looked up at them.
"That's gotta be him." JJ nodded,"I'll check it out, see if he left any clues behind."
That's when Hotch's phone went again, Rossi.
"What have you got, Rossi?"
"Undo my chains, Agent Rossi." They heard Antonia speak,"Look at me. I can't run away."
"Why is it so important to you?" Reid asked.
"A little taste of freedom. Probably the last one I'll ever have." Antonia hummed.
"And if we don't?" Elijah tilted his head.
"Well, you can take me straight to the new prison. I'll leave the heroics to you." Antonia shrugged.
"Stand by Dave." Hotch lowered his voice,"Do you have an address in Kentucky for Claude Barlow?"
"Uh.. The house he grew up in has changed owners twice since he left, and I have nothing for Antonia either." Garcia shook her head.
"Dave, do what she says." Hotch ordered.
"Understood." Rossi nodded, signaling for Antonia to be released.
Reid leaned over, uncuffing Antonia as Tara pointed her gun at her.
"Dont get comfortable. My glock is gonna be on you the entire time." Tara warned her.
"I wouldn't have it any other way." Antonia held up her hands.
*********************************
The team arrived in the wooded area they believed Barlow was hiding the boys. They broke into the cabin but only found one boy inside. Jimmy. The team hurried over to him, Rossi untying him.
"You're okay. We've got you." Rossi assured him.
"There's no one else here." Elijah looked around.
"He took Adam." Jimmy shook his head.
"Okay- Okay." Rossi nodded as the others ran out.
"Show us where you would take Claude." Reid opened the door of the SUV, where Antonia was.
"Let's go." Tara added.
Antonia and Tara exited the car, Antonia looking around.
"There's a trail.. Devil's Backbone." She mentioned,"..Wait! It's that way."
They soon came across Claude, holding Adam close with a gun to his head.
"Claude Barlow, FBI, drop the weapon." Elijah called to him.
"Where's Antonia?" Claude held the gun closer to Adam.
"Let the boy go." Reid ordered.
"Did you bring her here?"
"She lead us to you in order to stop you. Put the gun down." Elijah ordered.
Kayleigh
"Shut up! Where is she? Antonia!" Claude called out.
Tara and Slade were stood at a distance, out of view.
"Let me talk to him." She looked to Tara.
"Not a chance." Tara scoffed.
"We don't want to hurt you, Claude. Let Adam go." Reid shook his head.
"He's dead unless I see her." Claude threatened.
Elijah and Reid gave each other a look before the pair looked back at Tara, nodding for her to allow it. And so, she walked down with Antonia, revealing her to Claude.
"You came." Claude gasped.
"I want you to listen to me carefully. I've got something to tell you. But first.." Antonia pulled Adam away from Claude.
"It was all for you.. I did everything you said." Claude smiled.
"I know." Antonia hummed before she leaned in, whispering something in his ear.
Claude looked at Antonia as she began to walk off. He then raised his gun to his chin and.. Pulled the trigger.
*********************************
After they had put Antonia back behind bars, Hotch had stayed behind to talk to her. Fleur and the others had headed home, she was now stepping inside her house, careful not to wake Hank or Morgan. Morgan was half-asleep on the couch with the TV on a low volume. Hank was fast asleep against his chest. Fleur smiled softly at the sight, looking between them as she began to tidy up.
Morgan stirred slightly, slowly opening his eyes and smiling at her,"Hey, babygirl."
"Morning sleepy." Fleur chuckled, placing some of Hank's toys in the crate.
"Morning." Morgan yawned,"When.. When did you get back?"
"About.. Ten minutes ago?" Fleur guessed.
"And you guys solved it?"
"Kinda? I think." Fleur sighed,"You know Antonia Slade?"
"Yeah?" Morgan raised a brow.
"We dealt with her. And she practically killed the UnSub we were about to arrest. Said something to him and he..." Fleur made a gun with her fingers and shot her chin.
"It happens, we've seen that a hundred times before." Morgan sighed, shaking his head,"But you guys did your best."
"Hopefully." Fleur sat down beside him,"How long has he been out?"
"Eh, about and hour." Morgan hummed.
"Good." Fleur hummed,"God I miss you on the team..Everyone does."
"They do?"
"Elijah and Reid especially- Oh, and Garcia." Fleur chuckled.
"Ah, of course. I'll need to come see you guys." Morgan nodded.
"Soon, I hope." Fleur pointed.
"I'll see what I can do." Morgan kissed her cheek.
"Want to head to bed?"
"Very much so." Morgan nodded.
"I'll let you take him, hm?" Fleur kissed Hank's head.
"Yeah, but he missed you." Morgan looked to her.
"I missed him too." Fleur smiled.
"You've got time to spend with him in the morning." Morgan assured her.
"Here's to hoping I don't get called in during the night." Fleur joked.
"Don't jinx it." Morgan hummed.
"Knock wood." Fleur knocked on the wall.
"Definitely." Morgan chuckled, gently knocking on the coffee table.
"I'm gonna shower, hm?"
"Good idea, it'll help you relax."
"I love you." Fleur smiled.
"I love you too, babygirl." Morgan hummed.
*********************************
"Are you okay?" Reid asked as they walked into Elijah's house.
"I'm fine." Elijah sighed.
"Eli." Reid turned to him, he could see something was up.
"I'm fine." Elijah insisted.
"Sure?"
"I'm sure."
Reid took ahold of his hand and nodded,"Okay."
"..It doesn't get to me like it used to." Elijah sighed.
"Like?"
"Unsubs, y'know.. I used to not be able to sleep properly but.." Elijah bit his cheek,"I feel like I'm growing desensitized to it."
"I understand." Reid nodded, "I think..It's just the job."
"A blessing and a curse." Elijah nodded slowly.
"But, at least we can forget them easily the more we go on." Reid explained.
"The all start blending into one."
"Don't worry." Reid kissed his head,"I'll always be here to listen. "
"And that's why I love you." Elijah hummed.
"I try my best." Reid shrugged.
"Your best is always enough for me." Elijah smiled.
"I'll feed the boys and then I'll be upstairs." Reid pointed.
"I'll be waiting." Elijah hummed.
