Ch. 13: About time

Misty almost tripped as she rushed over to the main door of the Ketchum's residence. She rang the doorbell God knows how many times.

"Ash!"

She brushed her bangs behind her ear. She was sure her French braid was completely ruined and her makeup was smeared, but she had more important things to worry about than her face right now.

The door opened. It was Reese. "Misty! Good to see you."

"Where is Ash?"

"It's fine, calm down." Reese placed a comforting hand on Misty's. "He's upstairs cleaning his bedroom. Calm down! Will you?"

"I'm calm." Misty breathed heavily. Reese got her inside, took out a napkin and wiped off the smeared eyeliner under her eyes.

"There, it's fine now." Reese giggled. "Is that the morning makeup? It's already the afternoon."

Misty just stared with a frown.

"You don't feel like joking?"

The redhead shook her head.

"Misty, it's alright." Reese smiled sympathetically. "It's not the end of the world. It's only a misunderstanding."

"I'm not sure anymore." Misty sighed and rushed upstairs. Reese watched her with wide eyes. Young love was... amazing.

"ASH! OPEN THE DOOR!"

Reese put her hand over her mouth. "I better stay around."

When the door swung open, Misty got inside instantly. She was the one who slammed it shut, and Ash just kept staring at her.

"Wha-"

"It's not true!" She shouted, flailing her arms everywhere. "What I said to Gary—I was mad—I was lost—I didn't mean it—It's not true—It has nothing to do with reality—it was for myself—I had no idea you felt the same—but you stopped coming to school—I thought it was my fault—I called but—I know you're mad at me-"

"Misty!" Ash called out with a chuckle. "Calm down!"

"Why is everyone telling me to calm down?"

"Because you're shivering and shouting!"

Misty remained silent. She put her hands down.

Ash pulled her close. Misty looked up and stared into his eyes. He placed his hands over her upper arms. "See? You're calm now."

"I was-"

"I know." Ash nodded quickly. "Gary just called me. I know."

Misty snapped. "It's unbelievable!" She pulled away from him. "I thought guys didn't talk much! Why do you two gossip so much? Why do you talk so much? It's a girl thing!"

Ash blinked. "We do?"

"YES!"

"I don't know. I grew up with Gary. We share everything."

"Hey Ash! I bought a new jacket!"

Ash laughed. "That's not-"

"Hey Gary! Look at my selfie! Hey Ash! I think I like a girl! Hey Gary! I went out with Misty today! Hey Ash! Misty told me she likes me and not you! Hey Gary! I hate Misty right now!"

"We don't talk like that."

"Don't interrupt me!" Misty huffed. "Hey Ash! Misty is coming right now to your house!"

"Is that all?"

"You two should learn how to shut up!" Misty started pacing back and forth in Ash's bedroom. "You're not any different from my sisters Daisy and Violet!"

"Is this all because he told me about when you called him?"

She shook her head. "He wasn't supposed to tell anyone."

Ash smirked. "Oh yeah? Then why did you tell him that?"

"You won't get it. It was a mad moment."

"It's not true, then."

"No, it's not." Misty shook her head. "That's why I'm trying to tell you that you two talk way too much for two guy friends."

"I'm sorry Gary cares about my feelings." They were getting to the most important point... "You know, right?"

Misty cleared her throat. "I thought you didn't like me. You friendzoned me."

"I what?" Ash blinked. "I did that?"

"Yeah, when you said that people don't get-"

"-friendship." Ash continued with a smile. "I wasn't trying to friendzone you, Misty. I was just talking-"

"I told you! You talk way too much for a guy."

"I'm sorry I grew up with three women." Ash chuckled. "Is that so? You thought I didn't like you because I said that?"

Misty brushed her bangs behind her ear again. "That, and you never showed you liked me."

"Did you?"

"No, but-"

"But what?"

"You're the guy! You're supposed to show it first!" She snapped and then pouted.

"I did." Ash smiled. "I told you let's go out on Wednesday-"

"-and I invited you over for coffee afterwards!"

"We're equal then, huh?"

The two remained silent for a moment. Misty moved to sit on the edge of Ash's bed. She suddenly started laughing.

"It's funny, I know." He laughed too. "But honestly, I was trying to show you I'm interested. I even took you with me to the clinic, Misty. I wanted to be with you."

"There is a fine line between being interested and being nice, Ash. If you like me, you have to tell me that face to face."

"And what if you don't like me back? There is a fine line between being interested and being nice, after all."

Misty narrowed her eyes at him. "Don't use my arguments against me."

Ash pulled his desk chair and placed it right in front Misty. He sat down. "Okay."

"Why do you talk so much?"

He grinned, showing his ceramic braces to Misty once again. "My sisters taught me."

"Didn't they teach you how to calm an angry girl who likes you?"

Ash tapped his braces. "There is a way but I'm not sure you'll like it."

Misty grabbed his pillow and threw it at him. Ash laughed.

"I didn't mean it in that way!"

"I know." He put his pillow back on the bed. "But honestly, don't try to make me look like the bad guy. You were the one who called Gary and confessed to him your fake confession."

She nodded. "Yes, I did."

Ash grinned sarcastically. "And since you can confess to guys this easily, you could have dialed my phone number instead and did it."

"You're so cute." She grinned sarcastically as well. "But girls can't confess to guys they really like. I did that to Gary because I don't care about him anymore."

"Anymore."

"Let's not talk about that. It's dead past."

"Okay, fine, it's dead past."

"Alright! That was really stupid! I know!" Misty gasped. "Oh my God..." She hid her face with her hands and let a groan.

"I guess it was a mad moment, like you called it." Ash nodded. "I get my mad moments too, you know. I was really mad for a moment—well, moments, a lot of them."

Misty stared at him. She noticed he's gotten a little thicker all over, especially around his waist. "Just... what have you been eating on your bad moments, Ash?"

"What?" Ash blushed slightly but Misty didn't catch it. "I don't comfort-eat! It's a girl thing! What the hell?"

Misty eyed all the pizza, candy and donut boxes hidden under his bed (what a  failed attempt to clean a bedroom) and raised her eyebrows at Ash. "What was that diet thing again? Lifestyle something?"

"I'm taking a break!" Ash defended himself. "And... I like eating! Okay? I have to eat to survive!"

Misty thought he meant he survived so he can eat. "Did you even leave the house once? You know, moved your legs?"

He whined. Misty smiled her dirty one again. "What are you really good at, aside from eating?"

"Really good at? Playing basketball and making you fall for me so hard you can't resist running all the way to my house. That's certain."

Misty instantly got up. Ash leaned back slightly, smiling a very dirty one. She slowly sat back on her spot.

"What have you been eating?" He asked this time.

"Why?" Misty beamed.

"I don't know. I'm just throwing back your questions at you."

Misty wanted to scream. She thought he really noticed she got thinner (which could have been really flattering). Well, anyway, he was an idiot.

"But, no, wait." He blinked. "You did change."

"How come?" Misty raised her eyebrows. Maybe he noticed, after all?

"You're nicer."

"Is that all?" Misty shook her foot. She was getting impatient. "Maybe I did change, physically? You know, maybe."

Ash looked her up and down. "Uhm, no, you didn't."

"Your sisters didn't teach you to look thoughtfully? Huh?"

"I thought that was rude."

"God, Ash! My head hurts!"

"I think you got thinner but I'm not sure."

Misty took a deep breath. Finally she got the chance to brag about the five pounds she lost. "Yes, I did."

"Do you want me to be more specific?"

"Can you?"

"Yeah." Ash nodded and smirked. "The gap between your thighs is bigger and your waist is small so it makes your chest look bigger."

Misty turned red in the face and she turned around quickly, faking to fix her hair. "You're not supposed to say those details loudly."

"You said I should look thoughtfully."

"Fine, Ash! Fine!" She chuckled. "Don't do that again."

"Anyway, when I asked you what you've been eating, I wasn't throwing your question back at you-"

"Hey!"

"It's fun!" Ash shoved away when she tried to hit his arm. "I noticed the second you got inside. Happy?"

Misty paused for a moment. She licked her lips. "Yes." Misty started shaking her leg again. "But you didn't ask me-"

Ash rolled his eyes. "Fiiiine. What size are you now, Misty?"

Misty giggled. "Two."

"Of course." Ash then froze. "Wait, what? How did you—how do you get that stuff on? It's so small!"

"Yes, it's small, and I can get it on." The second she find out she could get a size two jeans on in the store two weeks ago she screamed in happiness.

"So proud, huh?" He saw it in her eyes.

Misty nodded like a child. Ash smiled. "Good for you."

She sat straight when Ash got up and moved to sit by her side. He leaned forward and slowly wrapped his arms around her. She did the same.

"Hey, I'm getting to my own shoulders! You're so small!"

Misty giggled and hugged him tighter around his torso. Ash was so warm and comfortable, just like how she imagined him to be.

"Have your arms met yet?"

She giggled loudly. Their cheeks were touching and she liked the little spot on his shoulder and against his neck. It was really warm, and his cold necklace tickled her. He smelled like fresh shower gels. "The tip of my fingers."

"You're the one who has short arms! I'm in no means fat. Nope."

"You're not."

"It's worse. It's not defined. You don't really know if you're fat or not. I say it's the purgatory."

"Maybe you can define it like that."

"Purgatory?"

The two pulled away from each other. Misty was slightly blushing. "It could soon move to heaven. Who knows?"

Ash smirked. "How? Are you an angel?"

"Maybe, maybe not. You'll have to find out yourself." Misty shrugged and turned to look away, hiding her blush.

"I like that no one at school knows you're a nasty freckled redhead." Ash leaned back and supported himself with his arms.

"I'm not nasty!" Misty put her hand over her cheek. "But I'm a freckled redhead. See?"

"Oh, really? Where?" Ash faked to look for freckles on her face. "Here?"

She froze when he planted a kiss beside the corner of her eye.

Misty shoved him away and turned to look away, her face red. "Idiot."

"Humm? Idiot? Who? Me?"

She turned around. "Who else?"

"It's okay. I'm use to you calling me names." He leaned on the bed and grabbed Misty by the waist, making her squeal and laugh. She leaned right by his side. "Hey!"

"I guess as long as it's coming from you, I'm fine with it." Their noses almost touched.

"When did you learn the romance? You barely leave your house." She spoke in a soft tone.

"It's a secret." He bit his lip.

"Speaking about leaving the house." Misty patted Ash's cheek. "Next week it's our turn to pass in Com class. Though, don't get too surprised at what you can see. Okay?"

"Surprised? How?"

Ash approached his locker slowly. He let a chuckle, eyeing curiously the huge pile of notes stuck on it.

"I told you not to get too surprised. People have really nothing better to do than stick notes on my locker and yours." Misty joined him quickly after she got her books from her locker.

"Well, it's alright." Ash opened his locker, grabbed the book and then closed it. Misty blinked. "Take them off."

"It doesn't matter. Let's go."

"Really?"

Ash wasn't sure why he was feeling flattered the moment he looked at his locker but he chose not to share his thoughts with Misty.

Misty followed quickly after Ash who walked in fast steps to the classroom. The students were busy talking but as soon as they stepped in everyone turned to look at them.

"I told you." Misty whispered to his ear and went to put her bag on the teacher's desk. She and Ash were presenting so there was no need to take a seat. The teacher was sitting on the back, and Gary was on her right, giving his two friends amusing looks.

Ash glared at some of them and went to place his laptop on the desk as well. He plugged in the data-show as Misty started introducing their work.

It was thanks to this project that Ash and Misty got to know each other. They started off in a very bad way, called each other names, Ash kept avoiding working, and Misty kept running after him trying to make him work. It was impossible to believe they could end up liking each other.

Maybe it was the start of something beautiful?
