Wyatt Lykensen x OC
Y/N was buzzing. It was officially Prawn Night, and she couldn't be happier. She had been waiting for this night almost her whole life. She was always excited for Prawn because there seemed something so romantic about it, about dancing with a boy she liked and spending time with the best friends she had ever had. What she hadn't pictured was her spending the whole night with those amazing friends as she had never found a date for Prawn this year.
Still, she knew it was going to be a great night. She had a beautiful pink dress that accentuated her light eyes, and she was going to go with Addison, Zed, Bree, and a few others. They all had met up at one of the local restaurants and had dinner together before getting pictures at Addison and Y/N's house with their parents. After that, they all climbed into the limo that Zed's dad ordered for them and had a great time heading to school, where they were piling inside now for the start to Prawn.
Y/N glanced around the gym that had been transformed into a beautiful area. The dark curtains helped allow the bright florescent lights shine even brighter. Music blasted through the gym, loud and blaring, but it wasn't a bad playlist just yet. She bopped her head along to the song as she locked eyes with a few of the people sitting at the table closest to the gym doors, sipping on their water that they got from the teachers wandering around. However, she was wrong; they weren't people, they were the werewolves.
It had been a few weeks since the werewolves had joined their school, and every single time Y/N saw one of them, she was absolutely terrified. It felt like history was going to repeat itself with her when she looked in their eyes, so she steered clear of any and all werewolves if she had the chance. If she couldn't, then Zed would stick close by and make sure that the werewolves wouldn't get close to her at all, protecting her from her worst fear.
But there was a small voice at the back of her head that whispered to her about the werewolves, telling her that she didn't really need to be afraid of them. They had been afraid of the zombies when they first started going to school with them, but now almost none of them were afraid of the zombies anymore. Would the same be said about the werewolves in a few more weeks or months? Besides, the werewolves that were at school with them now were not the ones that had killed her parents all those years ago; they were different than the past generations.
Her heart still thudded against her chest at the sight of them.
She shook her head as Addison pulled her across the floor toward another set of tables that they were going to claim. Y/N placed her white clutch on the table, following Addison's lead. She didn't let go of Y/N's arm, though, and pulled her out onto the dance floor before she could sit down at the table. Surprisingly, Y/N didn't mind dancing with Addison, who let loose as song after song played over the speakers in the gym. Zed, Bree, and their other friends found their way to the dance floor as well, and they were the rowdiest bunch in the gym.
Soon enough, though, it was time for the Prawn king and queen to be crowned. The DJ quieted the music as Y/N's heart started thudding in her chest. Addison grinned widely at her as she held onto her arm, walking them to the front of the crowd. Y/N was worried about who would be crowned Prawn queen since she was in the running for it.
"Our Prawn queen is . . ." the announcer paused for a moment, allowing people to drum their hands against their legs in preparation for the answer. "Y/N!"
Y/N couldn't believe her ears. She had actually won Prawn queen! This night was turning out better than she had ever imagined. Addison screamed in her ear when she had heard Y/N's name, hugging her tightly, while Zed clapped her on the shoulder. Yes, she didn't have any guy to be excited with, but that was okay because she had her best friends around her, cheering her on.
Y/N walked up the stairs to the stage and stood next to the announcer. She gazed out at the crowd in front of her, though it was kind of hard to see with all the lights pointed directly at her, blinding her eyes. Still, she could see shining eyes in the crowd, and though there were humans, zombies, and werewolves looking at her, she knew that she was safe up here. There was no need to be afraid of those who were different than her. They were different, but that didn't mean that they were monsters. Monsters were made when they let that fear of being different come to the forefront.
"And our Prawn king for this year is . . ." The crowd drummed their hands against their legs again as Y/N held her breath. She had no clue who was going to dance with her. "Wyatt Lykensen! The werewolves have made it in their first year being at school!"
For just one second there, Y/N's heart constricted tightly in her chest. However, she quickly shook her head as Wyatt, one of the werewolves, joined her on stage. He offered her a small smile, showing off his long white fangs. There was nothing she had to worry about with him, with any of the werewolves at school. They were just like the zombies and the humans, that's all. There was nothing she needed to be afraid of.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the first dance of the night between the King and Queen!"
Y/N accepted Wyatt's hand, taking it in her own and stepping forward closer to him. She glanced out at the crowd and saw Zed trying his hardest to get on stage to protect her, so she quickly shook her head at him with a small smile on her face. Wyatt pulled her against his chest as they swayed in front of the whole school together. The lights dimmed down to a soft pink and red, and it covered them in a perfect ambiance. Wyatt's dark eyes reflected the colors as he smiled at her.
"Nice to meet you, Y/N," Wyatt said softly. "I've seen you around at school, but I don't think we've ever been introduced to each other before."
"No, we haven't."
"I would ask why, but I think I know the reason." He offered her a nod, and she glanced down at their intertwined hands, ashamed of how she acted around him and the other werewolves ever since they joined the school. "It seems like a lot of the people here are afraid of us, and for what reason? None of the werewolves I know have done anything to bring about that fear."
"My parents were killed by werewolves when I was a baby," Y/N whispered to him, not meeting his eyes. "That's why I was terrified when you guys entered during the rap match. I've been told all my life that werewolves took them away from me, and I guess I believed that."
What surprised her most was the fact that Wyatt was shaking his head with an angry look on his face. "There's always bad bunches in larger groups," he told her, his voice laced with anger that nearly made her shrink away from him. "They ruin it for the rest of us. One mistake by one of us affects all of us."
"I realize that now, Wyatt," Y/N said to him quickly. She nearly stopped dancing with him, but he continued pulling her through the first dance. He was leading her gently and easily like he had done that time and again. "They are the ones I should be afraid of, not the whole werewolf population."
"Trust me, Y/N," Wyatt said, and she couldn't help but smile at the way he said her name, "I will never do that to you or anyone else. That is despicable behavior for anyone to do, and I do not stand for it."
"I believe you."
"Thank you. And I'm sorry about what happened to your parents."
"Thank you, Wyatt."
Y/N realized the song had ended a few beats ago, yet they were still dancing together on the stage. She suddenly stopped and offered him a slightly awkward smile. As he smiled back at her, she noticed that his crown was crooked on his head, so she reached out and fixed it for him, placing it directly on top of his unruly hair.
"What do you say joining the rest of our friends and dancing the night away together?" Wyatt asked her with a grin on his face.
"That sounds great."
She took his hand and pulled him off of the stage toward their friends that had combined together. Addison and Zed both winked at her before they split off from the rest of the group as the dance pop music started playing again. Y/N whirled around and laced her fingers through Wyatt's own fingers and jumped to the beat, a wide smile on her face. Tonight was the best night of her life.
