Sokka x Yue (AU)
"Lord Sokka, we are approaching the destination," a butler said, peeking into Sokka's room on the ship.
"Thank you," Sokka said, trying to polite. He was trying to work on his swordsmanship but the butler had to interrupt him. "Where is Katara?"
"Lady Katara is having tea with the liaison from the Earth Kingdom."
"Suki?" Sokka asked, trying to sound nonchalant. "She's on the ship with us?"
"Of course!" the butler said. "Princess Yue specifically requested her to join you and your sister."
"May you bring Katara and Suki here? I'd like to have a word with them," Sokka said, setting his sword down. He grinned at the butler and said, "This time, don't let Katara say no."
"Yes, sir," the butler said, bowing. He walked out of Sokka's room, shutting the door behind him.
Sokka glanced out of the window, steeling himself for Suki. She was one of the most beautiful girls he had ever seen. For some reason, he always acted like a fool around her. Sokka made sure that this time he wouldn't act like a fool.
Since Sokka was the chief of the Southern Water Tribe, he went all over the world, meeting the liaisons and generals and all the other higher ups from the three other nations. Though, there was only one higher up for the Air Nomad's. It was Aang, the Avatar, and Sokka was really close with him.
He only wished he could've joined them to the Northern Water Tribe. Unfortunately for Sokka, Aang was already meeting with Fire Lord Zuko. There was one thing that Sokka didn't like about Aang and it was how he liked his sister. Sokka knew Katara liked him back but he didn't want to say anything.
Another higher up Sokka was close with was Toph Beifong, the daughter of the wealthy Beifong family. They had a lot of fun when they were younger but they couldn't do that anymore since Sokka was the new chief of the Southern Water Tribe. Every once in awhile, though, they hung out and reminisced about their younger years.
A knock on the door jarred Sokka from his memories. He stood up and plastered a smile on his face as he opened the door. Suki had a smile on her pretty face and Katara was behind her, a frown on hers. "H - hi, Suki," Sokka said nervously. He moved out of the way and she walked in, Katara following.
"'H - hi, Suki'," Katara said in a mocking way. "Can you be even more dorkier?"
Sokka shoved Katara into his room and said, "Suki, is there anything you would like?"
"Well, I was just having tea with your sister so I'm good," Suki said politely. "Is there a reason as to why you wanted us in here with you?"
"Oh," Sokka said, frowning. His mind went a mile a minute trying to figure out why he wanted them there. Besides wanting to see Suki. He would never admit that out loud.
"He probably forgot why we are seeing Princess Yue," Katara said, coming to Sokka's rescue. He shot her a smile while she said, "She wants to discuss an arranged marriage with us, remember?"
"Yeah," Sokka said, nodding. "Thanks, Katara."
"No problem."
"Is that all?" Suki asked, tilting her head to the side.
"Um, yeah," Sokka said, taking in a deep breath. Of course he couldn't think of anything else to say. "I'll walk you to the door. Katara, you may stay."
"Thanks," Suki said, smiling. Sokka thought he would faint with that smile but then she touched his arm and he nearly died. The next thing he knew he was sprawled out on the floor, groaning in pain. "Sokka, are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he said, sitting up. Suki was kneeling next to him, looking at him with concern. "That was super embarrassing."
"What did you trip over?" Suki asked, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. She grabbed the hilt of his sword and said, "At least you didn't impale yourself with it. I'm not sure what I'd do if you died."
Sokka nearly did a double take. Was Suki flirting with him? "I don't know what I'd do either," he said, chuckling.
"I know what I would do," Katara muttered from the back of the room.
"I'll see you later, Sokka," Suki said quietly. She left him room, shutting the door with a soft thud.
"I am embarrassed to be related to you," Katara said, laughing. "Who falls in front in their crush? Only my brother, that's who."
"At least I can speak to her," Sokka said, rolling his eyes. "You and Aang are horrible about your crushes."
"Aang has a crush?" Katara asked, her face falling. "Oh, of course he does. There are much prettier girls out there than me."
"How oblivious can you be?" Sokka asked, throwing his hands up into the air. Katara looked up at him with a black face. "Aang likes you."
"You're only telling me that to mess with me," she said, sniffling. "I don't believe you."
"I wouldn't lie to you about relationships," Sokka said, shaking his head. "Trust me on this, Katara."
"We'll see about that."
"Hey, have you ever met Princess Yue before? I haven't and want to know what she is like."
"Yeah," Katara said, sitting down on Sokka's bed. "Aang and I went a few years ago when we both wanted to train together."
"I forgot about that," Sokka said, his eyes widening. "I couldn't go because I was just made chief of the Southern Water Tribe."
"You always have to bring that up, don't you?" Katara asked, almost bitterly. Sokka frowned and sat right next to her. "We all know that you're the chief."
"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked, frowning. But before Katara could answer, the ship shuddered to a stop.
"Nothing. It's nothing."
Katara got up and basically ran out of his room. "Katara!"
She didn't respond to Sokka's cry. Sokka sighed and shook his head. Of course Katara was jealous of his role in the Southern Water Tribe. He knew she would be. But maybe she was right. He did talk about being chief a lot.
Sokka scrambled around his room, trying to find his sheath. He didn't want to be late to the meeting but he didn't want to walk in there without his sword. He found it underneath his bed so he quickly put it on and sheathed his sword. He walked quickly from his room to the opening. Suki and Katara were already there most likely waiting for him. Before he could say anything to them, a loud noise pierced the air. It was the royal horn, announcing their arrival.
"This is so exciting!" Suki said brightly. "I never get this kind of welcome."
"At times, it's annoying," Sokka whispered in her ear.
The three of them were quickly ushered into a large igloo, though it didn't look like any from the south. It looked more of a palace to Sokka. "Thank you for joining us," Chief Arnook said, bowing to Sokka. "We have a lot to talk about."
"Thank you for inviting us," Sokka said, bowing back.
A girl stepped into Sokka's view, knocking the breath out of him. All the thoughts of Suki left his mind as he stared at this new girl. Her hair was white, which was out of the ordinary. But it looked so natural on her that he didn't even question it. Her bright blue eyes shown with intelligence and warmth. "Excuse me, are you listening to me?"
"What?" Sokka said, his cheeks burning.
The girl's eyebrows shot up ever so slightly and she said, "I was introducing myself. I am Princess Yue of the Nothern Water Tribe. It is so nice to meet you, Chief Sokka."
So, that was Princess Yue. She was prettier than what he thought. "It is also nice to meet you," Sokka said with a smile.
"Let's all sit down so we can talk," Chief Arnook said. Sokka sat down next to Yue, with Katara on his other side.
"You didn't tell me she was gorgeous," Sokka whispered in Katara's ear.
"I didn't think I had to."
"We are here today to discuss the arranged marriage of my daughter," Chief Arnook said. "We have a couple of men that she could marry but I know who my favorite it." He chuckled but shook his head. "The men we have are Haru from the Earth Kingdom, Aang from the Air Nomads, Prince Zuko from the Fire Nation, and Chief Sokka from the Southern Water Tribe."
Sokka went still. He didn't know that they wanted him to marry Yue. "All of the men we chose are for alliances only," Yue continued, sounding a bit bored. "Though, if Father would listen to me, I would like to marry someone I could fall in love with."
Sokka glanced over at Yue and she was staring down at her hands. He nudged her and said quietly, "Do you want to go somewhere?"
"Yes," she said, nodding enthusiastically. Yue stood up and said, "Sokka and I will be back soon. I want to get to know him before I make my decision."
Yue latched onto Sokka's hand and dragged him away from the igloo. "Where are we going?"
"The Spirit Oasis."
Yue didn't explain any further so Sokka stayed quiet. He didn't think he could speak either with her hand wrapped around his wrist. Sokka was getting confused by all the twists and turns they took to get to the Spirit Oasis. But he wasn't worried because he was with her.
Soon enough, they had entered a place with soft looking grass. "Welcome to the Spirit Oasis," Yue said, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. "We can talk here without Father interrupting us."
"Why won't your Father let you marry someone you love?" Sokka asked immediately. "And why wasn't I notified that I was a choice?"
"Father told the three others," Yue said, frowning. She walked over to the little pool in the center and sat down in front of it. "Come and join me."
Sokka walked slowly over to her, thinking. "What is this place?"
"Like I told you, it is the Spirit Oasis," Yue said, pointing to the pool. Sokka saw two fish swimming in circles, never deviating from their paths. "Those two fish are Tui and La, the moon and ocean spirits. I like to come here to think." Sokka plopped down next to her, unhooking his sheath. He threw it to the side as she said, "My father is a stickler for traditions. All of the other females in my family have been in an arranged marriage so I'm not any different."
"I don't think anything can change his mind," Sokka said, shrugging. "Do you see yourself falling for any of the choices?"
Yue stared at him before saying, "Perhaps."
"Nice," Sokka said, feeling a bit lighter. "Who is your favorite choice?"
"You."
"Sweet." Sokka grinned at her and said, "I'm not as opposed to it like I was before."
