Rollan x Meilin AU
This one shot is based on the song Nobody Knows by Gunnar Gehl. I linked it above, so you should listen to it while you read it! It's a really good song! :)
Meilin sat in front of her vanity, putting the finishing touches on her makeup. She wanted to look good for the party she was going to, even though it was just with her friends. She always liked to make a good impression no matter where she went.
Meilin flicked her silky black hair behind her shoulder, standing up. Her green dress hung near her knees, and she slipped her feet into a pair of black heels. She glanced at herself in the mirror, feeling pleased with her outfit. Her dark green dress hugged her curves in all the right places, which was unusual since she hardly could ever find the right dresses. Her heels made her a couple of inches taller, though she didn't need to be any taller.
Meilin grinned at her reflection before moving away from the mirror. She stopped at her dresser, grabbing her clutch. A pair of arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her close to their chest. She melted into the embrace, and the man kissed the side of her head. "Where have you been?" Meilin asked him, turning around. "I've missed you, Rollan."
"My business trip took longer than planned, but I'm here now," Rollan said, a smile on his face. He glanced down at her body, saying, "You look amazing. Where are you going?"
"Abeke and Conor just moved into their new place, so they're have a party." Meilin kissed Rollan gently, wrapping her arms around his neck. "But I can stay here if you want."
"No, that's alright. We'll go together."
Meilin's lips turned down into a frown. "Abeke and Conor don't know about us yet."
"I know," Rollan said, a smile playing on his face. "We don't have to tell them yet, either. I just want to try to pull it off and see if they notice."
Meilin laughed, shaking her head. "You are funny. Fine, we'll do that. We can tell them that I picked you up at the airport and decided to bring you along."
"Good idea," Rollan said, letting go of Meilin's waist. He ran a hair through his hair, stepping in front of the mirror. "Do I look good enough to go?"
"You always look good, so I'm kind of biased." Rollan turned his head, giving her a half smile. Meilin walked up next to him, sliding her hand into his. "It's going to be hard pretending not to be a couple, but I think we can do it."
"Hm, I don't know about that, babe. You're the prettiest girl on this planet, and the smartest one too. I might slip up."
Meilin grinned, hitting his shoulder. Her cheeks warmed up, and so did the tips of her ears. "If you keep saying stuff like that, then they'll know."
"I'll slip in a few compliments here and there," Rollan said, pulling her into another hug. "Are you ready to go?"
"Yeah." Meilin let go from the hug, gripping her clutch in her hand. She pulled Rollan toward the front door, smiling at him. The night was dark, and clouds covered the moon and stars. It seemed like the sky didn't want to see them together, to tell their secret to the world. Rollan jingled the keys, unlocking the car. Meilin slid into the passenger's side, and she watched as Rollan got into the driver's seat. He quickly started the car, immediately putting the car in reverse.
Rollan placed his arm against the back of the headrest, glancing behind them. In the faint moonlight, Meilin could see his side profile. He had a clear, strong jaw that could cut through the strongest ice. His cheekbones weren't that defined, but she could still trace them out with her finger. Her heart thudded in her chest when he saw her looking at him. "Do you like what you see?"
"Of course," she said, smiling. "I love when you do that when you back up."
"I figured." Rollan pulled out onto the road, the headlights cutting into the dark night. "I didn't know Abeke and Conor were moving in together."
"They decided to while you were gone. I helped them move into their apartment," Meilin said, shrugging. "Conor wants to propose soon, but he isn't sure when the right time is. Maybe you could talk to him tonight about that."
"Wow," Rollan said, sounding surprised. "It feels like just yesterday that we were in high school. Where'd the time go?"
"I have no idea." Meilin felt a little sad about growing up. She didn't want to graduate high school, and then she didn't want to start her new business. There was something about growing up that scared her. She felt like she wasn't ready to be an adult, and that she still needed time to be a kid. "Can we stop growing older?"
"We can try to go to Neverland, but I don't think it's open," Rollan said, laughing. He grew serious, looking her way for a second. "I used to be afraid of growing older, but I'm not anymore."
"Why?"
"I found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. With you by my side, I'm not afraid of anything."
"Oh," Meilin said, looking down at her hands. "Wow, Rollan. I didn't know you thought that."
Rollan shrugged one shoulder, staring straight ahead. "Yeah. I think I've always known that you were mine."
"You know, I liked you in high school, but I didn't think I had a chance with you," Meilin said, placing a hand on top of his that was on the gear shift. "You were always - hey, turn here!"
Rollan slammed on the breaks, letting out a breath. "What?"
"You have to turn here," Meilin said, giggling. "Their apartment is this way."
Rollan turned down the road, shaking his head. "You scared me so bad, babe. Please don't ever do that again."
"I'm sorry," Meilin said, trying to keep her giggles in. However, they bubbled out of her mouth, growing louder when Rollan joined in. "At least there wasn't anyone behind us."
"Oh God," Rollan said, looking over at Meilin. His eyes were huge saucers. "What if there was someone behind us? That would've been terrible!"
Meilin laughed at him before pointing out the apartment building. "They live there."
"Woah, that's nice."
"Yeah. They got a really good deal on the down payment too, which was awesome."
"Too bad we already live together," Rollan said, looking over at Meilin. "We could've lived here."
"Hey! I love my house, and so do you," Meilin said, frowning. "And you only moved in with me because you didn't have a place to go. Though, it was a good thing you did that because I don't think we would've gotten together."
"Can you believe it's already been a year of us being together?" Rollan parked the car, shutting it off. They were plunged into the darkness, but Meilin wasn't worried about it. "It feels like a whole lifetime."
Meilin reached over the armrest, pulling Rollan into a kiss. She didn't need the light to find him. He pulled away too soon for her, and she pouted. "I want more."
"Do you want Abeke and Conor to see us?"
"No." Meilin grabbed her clutch, stepping out of the car. She slammed the door shut, walking around the car to Rollan's side. "Are you ready to fake it?"
"Yeah," Rollan said, grinning. "Though, I think Abeke and Conor will suspect that there's something between us. They know us pretty well."
Meilin nodded as they walked toward the apartment building. There was a small foyer, and Meilin stopped in it, pressing the buzzer for Conor and Abeke's apartment. "Come on up!" a female's voice said, sounding excited.
"They're ready for us," Meilin said, grinning over at Rollan. She led him up the stairs, knocking on the door to the apartment. Abeke and Conor must've been standing near the door because it opened right when Meilin knocked.
"Rollan! I didn't think you were coming home any time soon!" Conor said, pulling Meilin's boyfriend into a hug. "It's so good to see you, buddy!"
"I literally just picked him up at the airport," Meilin said, laughing. "I didn't know he was back either." Meilin laid her eyes on Abeke, and she saw a certain glow behind her eyes. "Congrats, guys. You both deserve the love you two give each other and so much more."
Abeke threw her arms around Meilin, pulling her into a hug. "Thank you," she whispered. "We never thought we would get here, with my illness and all, but we did."
Abeke had gotten sick in their senior year of high school. For a whole year, the doctor's weren't sure what was wrong with her, and then they finally found out that she had thyroid cancer. It had been a long struggle, but Abeke was finally cancerfree. During her illness, Abeke and Conor started dating, so he was there for her throughout it all.
Abeke and Conor moved out of the way, and Meilin and Rollan walked into the apartment. The living room looked better with furniture in it, Meilin decided. Rollan's hand brushed her, and it took everything in her not to grab it. The two of them sat down on the couch, and Conor asked, "Do you guys want anything to drink?"
"No, thanks," Meilin said, shaking her head. "I'm good."
"Me too." Rollan cleared his throat, saying, "This is a really nice size for the living room."
"You should see our room," Conor said, grinning. His blonde hair fell into his eyes, so he brushed it away. "Come on, Rollan, I want to show you the rest of the apartment. Meilin, you don't have to come since you helped us move in."
"I'll stay with Abeke," Meilin said, smiling at her best friend. The two men walked off, leaving the two girls alone. "How has it been so far?"
"Amazing." Abeke's eyes shown happily. "I thought living with Conor would be weird, but it just feels so natural, you know?"
"Yeah," Meilin said, thinking about Rollan. "His room back in high school was always so messy. Did he grow out of that?"
"No," Abeke said, laughing. "But it doesn't bother me like it used to." Abeke grew quiet, staring at Meilin. She fidgeted under hear gaze. "You seem . . . happy."
"I've always been happy."
"No, it's a different happy." Abeke grabbed Meilin's chin, turning her head so she would face her fully. "Yup, there it is."
"What are you talking about?"
"You're in love. And I think I know who you're in love with."
Meilin frowned, shaking her head. "No, I'm not in love with anyone."
"Drop the act, Meilin. I saw you kissing Rollan."
Meilin gasped, saying, "There were no lights on in the car! How did you see us?"
"I didn't," Abeke said, grinning. "I knew I could get it out of you if I said that." Meilin cursed underneath her breath, looking away from Abeke. "Why didn't you tell us that you two were together?"
"Because we wanted to keep it a secret." Meilin shrugged, looking down the hallway. She could hear Rollan speaking, and it made her heart beat harder. "Rollan and I both are private about romantic relationships, so we didn't want to tell you guys."
"How long have you been together?"
Meilin grimaced, turning back toward Abeke. "A year."
Abeke's mouth fell open, and she said, "What? You've been together that long and we didn't know?"
"I feel terrible now," Meilin said, dropping her head. "I should've told you."
"I don't mind, Meilin. I know how private you are," Abeke said, nodding. She had a soft smile on her face, and she placed a hand on Meilin's shoulder. "I always knew that you two were going to get together."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Apparently he did too," Meilin said, cracking a grin. She glanced back down the hall, saying, "Don't tell Conor yet. I want Rollan to be the one to tell him."
There was a strangled yell, and Conor came running down the hallway. "You two are dating?"
"I think he already knows," Abeke whispered to Meilin.
"I'm sorry, Meilin!" Rollan said, quickly. Meilin stood up, shaking her head. "I didn't mean to let it slip!"
"Don't worry, Abeke knows too."
"When were you going to tell us?" Conor asked, placing a hand on his chest. "We're your best friends."
"I'm a private person, so I didn't want everyone knowing that Rollan and I were dating," Meilin said, shrugging. "Why didn't you tell Rollan that you and Abeke were moving in together?"
"Good point," Conor said, nodding. "It was a little surprising, that's all. I'm happy for you two."
Meilin finally grabbed hold of Rollan's hand, giving it a small squeeze. He smiled down at her before saying, "You don't know how happy I am now that you guys know. I wish I could tell the world that I have the best woman by my side."
Meilin laughed, hitting him across the chest. "Come on. Really?"
"Really!"
The four friends all shared a smile together. Meilin had been terrified about growing up, but with these guys, she wasn't as scared. She knew she had people that loved her, and she loved them. She didn't know what life had in store for her, but she knew it would be great.
