"Emily, don't be such a downer!"
"I'm not a downer Jess, I just don't feel like going anywhere," I answered, as I was going through my notebook.
I have so many things that need to be done before studies.
"It's the end of August and very soon we'll be studying at Stanford. You'll plunge yourself in studies, then you'll find new friends and won't have enough time to spend with me."
"Jess, you're my best friend. Today, I really don't want to go out anywhere."
We are childhood friends, but so different. She likes to go out, have fun and meet new people, while I dedicate all my free time to learning and self-development.
"Emily, are you listening to me? Let's go, it will be fun. School is over, let yourself relax, just a little bit," Jess kept insisting. She was coming up with new arguments.
"I don't think that your 'to get wasted' parties will somehow help me to relax. Maybe today it's better we watch some movie and next time I'll go out with you for sure," I suggested.
I know that we spend almost all our weekends like this. In my opinion locking up in the room and watching your favorite movies is much more fun than going to parties.
"No, you told me that the last time! Come on, get yourself ready and we're leaving!"
"Jeez, what a clingy," I thought to myself. Usually it was easy to convince her, but I guess not this time. Jess seriously wants to pull me out of my room today.
"But my parents won't let me go," I mumbled.
My mom was always against this kind of pastime. She thinks that parties are a waste of time, which I totally agree with. Parents are my main argument against Jess. They won't let me go, that's for sure.
"But they won't even know! I have a great plan! I'll go home now, as if our sleepover is canceled. You go downstairs and tell your parents that you have a headache, so you want to go to bed earlier. Then you go back to your room, put some incredibly beautiful dress on and sneak out through the window, while I'll be waiting for you outside. So, how's the plan? I told you that I'm a genius!" my friend said with laughter. I blinked in surprise, how did she even come up with this? I'm not going to sneak out and lie to my parents.
"Hey, calm down genius. Firstly, I'm not going to lie to my parents. Secondly, I don't wear dresses, and thirdly, I'm not going to sneak out through the window, my room is on the second floor after all. What if I fall?" I was still hoping to change her mind. Maybe these arguments will finally work.
"You're such a goody, Emily! Nothing is going to happen, let's just once in your life do something reckless and fun," Jess kept convincing me.
"Reckless and fun usually ends up badly," I replied. Looks like she's not pleased with my answer.
"Emily, let's go. We aren't going to stay there for long and if you don't like it, then we'll leave right away. Okay?"
My friend sighted wearily and looked at me with a plaint in her eyes. I don't like this kind of expression on her face. It always works, it's just impossible to refuse her this way.
"Fine. But even so, I'm doing it only because of you," I resigned, although I have already regretted about it.
"Hurray! Finally!" Jess shouted in triumph, jumping on my bed and clapping her hands. I screwed up my face, I should have better refused. Well done Emily, you have just signed your own death sentence and looks like this party thing won't have a good outcome.
"I need to call Michael, so that he won't get worried," I said, as I took my phone.
"Of course, there's no way without your handsome boyfriend, right?" Jess started laughing at me, but I ignored her.
"You two downers are made for each other," my friend grinned.
My boyfriend Michael is a year older than me. He is already studying at Stanford University. We spent a wonderful summer together, but he had to leave earlier due to some circumstances. I miss him already. He has something to do at fraternity, but we will see each other very soon.
"Emily, what are you thinking about? About your blondie?" my friend didn't stop making fun of me.
"Stop it, Jess. I'm going to the bathroom," I said and grabbed my cosmetics bag along the way.
"Okay, but please hurry up," Jess added.
It didn't take me too long to get ready, as I didn't put much make-up on. I applied some mascara, lip gloss, fixed my hair and here you go - I was ready to go. Before going back to Jess, I glanced once more at myself in the mirror. We even look different with Jess; she is one of those model-looking girls in bikini with a beautiful tanned skin. I wonder, how should I describe myself? A bookworm? No, I'm quite cute looking, if you look closer. I have red shoulder-length hair, blue eyes and pale skin. Physical appearance isn't important and in fact I am a notable example of it. Maybe I'm not so pretty, but I am successful. There a great future awaits me. I got into Stanford, perfectly graduated from High School and I am an honor to my parents.
"Emily?" Jess shouted from my room, interrupting my thoughts.
What am I thinking about? Oh, yes, I was imagining my future and lost track of time.
"I'm coming," I said, returning to my room, whilst Jess was rummaging in my closet, trying to find a dress.
"Here, look what I've prepared for you. Although there was nothing to choose from, so I found only two dresses," Jess babbled.
She was holding two black dresses. The first dress is knee-length with long sleeves and the other one is a gift from Jess. It was more revealing and short, with two small shoulder-straps instead of sleeves.
"I'll wear the one with the sleeves," I quickly replied.
I hope she won't see the white label on the dress that she gave me as a present. My friend gave me it a long time ago, but I didn't wear it even once.
"No, this dress is for a funeral. You will wear the one that I gave you," Jess exclaimed, as she turned the dress around.
By looking at her, I could tell how she admires her choice. After a moment, her big gray eyes widened and I understood right away what she has actually seen.
"Emily, there is a label on it! You haven't worn it yet?" it seems that she started to get angry.
"Oh, so it was a dress? I thought it's a nightgown, so I saved it for a special occasion," I tried to make a joke and I guess I succeeded.
"Ha-ha, very funny. Okay then, I'm leaving. I'll be waiting for you outside. Don't take too long!" Jess said, being almost offended, and leaved my room.
I walked up to my bed and took the dress. I can already imagine how stupid I will look in it. I pulled an unhappy face on and heard voices coming from downstairs.
"Goodbye Mr. Bird!"
"You're already leaving? I thought you two are having a sleepover party?" my father's voice became audible.
"Yes, but my mom phoned me and asked to come back. Besides, Emily has a headache," Jess babbled.
"Okay, then good night and say hello from me to your parents," dad answered.
That's it. Now it's my part of a play. I tossed my dress aside; I need to look as if I am already going to bed. As I threw my robe on, I quickly leaved the room. I was thinking what to say, while I was going downstairs. I hate to lie, especially to my dad.
"Dad?" I called him, as I took another step below.
"Yes dear?"
"I don't really feel myself well. I'll probably go to sleep earlier," I said pulling the belt of my robe. I hope he won't notice that I am nervous.
"Jessica has already told me," dad smiled, as he came closer.
"Go, have some rest and I'll pretend that I didn't see that make-up on your face," he continued.
I see, so he figured it out. Damn! I am a bad liar, my cheeks began to burn.
"Dad, um...I just..." I started babbling, stuttering and not knowing what to say.
"Emily, I understand everything, you know there were days when I was as young as you are," father interrupted me with laughter.
"Emily, sweetheart," mom's voice came from the living room.
"And now it's time to quickly run to your room before your mother sees you," dad whispered to me.
"This will be our secret. But I hope you'll behave yourself well."
"Yes dad. I promise that I won't stay long," I said, going upstairs.
"I love you, dad," I said to him, turning around.
"And I love you too, baby," I heard his voice from behind.
I feel how he is standing and smiling at me. As I returned to my room, I quickly dressed up, opened the window and saw Jess.
"What took you so long? I've been waiting since forever," my friend started complaining.
"How should I get down?" I asked looking around me.
As lucky as I am, there were my mom's favorite bushes of roses under my window. She will kill me if I do something with them.
"You see those metal constructions for roses? Climb them!" Jess advised.
"Genius, you couldn't find a ladder or something else?" I muttered angrily.
"What if they won't withstand?"
"In the movies, everyone does so and they don't fall," the blonde replied laughing.
"But that's in the movies and this is me! I can fall even out of the blue," I couldn't calm down.
If only mom, or dad, or Michael saw me. Oh, Michael, I forgot to call him after all. Okay, I will tell him later that I went to the party. He will be very surprised. Michael isn't a huge fan of parties just like me. We are alike: we don't like noisy companies and prefer calm evenings.
"Get down!" Jess began to command, interrupting my thoughts.
"Fine, I'm coming already!"
I was getting down for about ten minutes. Jess kept laughing and even wanted to film me on her phone. We went on her car. During all our way there she was making fun of me. Soon, we finally reached the place where the party was held. It was a big house full of drunk people. There was already someone lying on the grass; red cups all around the place and it smelled with alcohol and nicotine. And who even goes to this kind of parties? I couldn't hear what Jess was saying, as there was loud music. I already regret that I came to this party. Just as I wanted to ask Jess to leave this place, I saw them...
