Chapter 6 - New Faces
George glanced around the room, there were a few faces he didn't recognize and it really made him think about how much he had missed. How did he let this happen?
"Aunt Nava!" A little boy ran down the stairs towards Nava, Fleur was walking down the stairs with a little girl in her arms.
His eyes widened, as he watched the little boy hugging her. He glanced over at Fleur at the little blonde girl in her arms. He had forgotten that he was an uncle. He felt a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach he had missed so much. Was this night going to get any better?
Nava looked so happy with him in his arms, it's the most he had seen her smile all week. She looked up at him and stood up; placing her hands on Teddy's shoulders and walked him towards George.
"Teddy, say hi to your Uncle George," she smiled and Teddy looked up at him.
George smiled back, Remus and Tonks' son had grown up so much since the last time he saw him as a baby.
"Hi Uncle George," Teddy smiled and glanced reassuringly towards Nava then back to him.
He squatted down and looked at the little boy in front of him, his brown hair was a little past his ears, "Hello Teddy, you look just like your dad do you know that?"
Teddy grinned, "Really?"
"Of course, really!" George ruffled Teddy's hair. Teddy giggled and instantly his hair turned to orange.
George's eyes widened and he laughed, "And just like your mom too I see!" Nava laughed along with him and just for a moment he felt like nothing had changed, for one second he felt like his old self.
A grasp on his shoulder brought him out of his focused state. He turned to face Bill, who had a comforting smile, before turning to the little girl in Fleur's arms.
"George, this is Victoire," Bill moved to stand next to his wife and wrapped his arm around her waist, smiling at his daughter. The little girl's laughter filled the room as her father tickled her, "Daddy!" her soft little voice spoke out her father's name for him to stop, but as soon as she caught sight of George she looked at him with wondrous eyes. Bill gave his brother a look a nodded before he kissed the top of his daughter's head and nudged Fleur forward.
George took a step forward hesitantly, gaining a closer look at the newest member of their family. She had the same eyes as her mother, a vibrant shade of blue. She smiled and continued to stare at him, glancing at her father before turning her full attention back on George.
"Hello Victoire," She smiled and continued to stare at him, glancing at her father before turning her full attention back on George and lifting her arms out towards him.
"Would you like to hold her, George?" George was taken aback by Fleur's question. He had no idea what to say, least of all do. This was so new to him. He should be happy or at least excited, but he was already so distant from his family and he couldn't really figure out what he was feeling. His eyes only shifted to Fleurs for a moment before he hesitantly nodded and lifted his arms up to accept this blonde Weasley.
Victoire clung her arms around her uncle's neck and leaned back observing him closer. He couldn't resist a smile as he looked down at his beautiful niece. "Uncle Deorge!" She squealed an attempt at his name and he gave her a brighter smile, this was the family he missed out on.
"Dinner's almost ready!" his mother called out from the kitchen, "Everyone to the kitchen to help bring everything out!"
Gradually, everyone walked past and gave warm hugs and greetings as they began filing into the kitchen, their conversations picking up again inside. Bill smiled warmly as he took Victoire from her uncle's arms, "Come on sweetie, let's help out."
They parted from their embrace and Victoire clung to her, leaving George alone with Teddy and Nava. She walked up to him, the little boy in her arms. He smiled at her, as she looked at Teddy once more, pure admiration filling her eyes. He could tell how happy being around family had made her, something he had forgotten all too well.
He turned over to see his brother Percy and his girlfriend slowly getting up from their chairs turning towards the doorway to the kitchen. George took a subtle breath before walking over to his brother. He wanted to clear the air with the people he hurt the most.
He placed a hand on his brothers shoulder, pulling him away from his conversation with his girlfriend. They both turned around and he cleared his throat, "Sorry, I uh, can I talk to you Perce?"
His brothers eyes widened slightly, obviously shocked this was happening. Percy nodded and turned to his girlfriend, "Sorry, go along and I'll follow after." Her eyes shifted between the two of them before giving him a reassuring smile. She nodded and kissed him on the cheek lovingly before heading to the kitchen. Nava gave him a approving smile and walked into the kitchen with her and a giggling Teddy in her arms.
It was a little reassuring seeing this, his brother finding someone who loved him so much. He deserved it; especially after all he put him through.
He turned his attention back towards his brother who was obviously watching his girl walk into the kitchen. He didn't looking like he was looking forward to this conversation; in fact he looked like he was extremely uncomfortable.
George had a strong desire to break the tension a bit, but he was a little rusty. He smiled lightly and nudged his older brother, "So, were you not going to say hi?" He already regretted saying that, that was so dumb. Why couldn't he have thought of anything else? His new girlfriend? Nothing? He really was losing his touch.
Percy nervously rubbed his left wrist and shifted his eyes around the empty room, "I just figured..."
George frowned a bit and shook his head mentally hating himself for saying that, "Sorry, I was trying to lighten the mood... obviously not good at that anymore..." He wanted to hide under a rock, this was the worst way to start this conversation. He needed to salvage it as quick as possible.
Percy obviously didn't know how to respond and was confused on what was happening in front of him. George was a nervous wreck.
It was now or never.
George walked forward and rested his hands on his brother's shoulders, "I am so sorry, I was a horrible brother, and everything I said was out of line. I should have never blamed you for any of it."
Percy's eyes softened, he obviously wasn't expecting an apology, "Thank you, George."
"Fred wouldn't want us to be like this," the corners of George's lips rose a bit, "he'd want us joking and laughing."
"You mean pranking?" Percy smiled and patted George's left hand,
George's eyes lit up, "One step at a time, brother." He pulled his brother into a hug and there was a peaceful silence between them, something that he could be happy with. It was nice, feeling some comfort from his family. This was something he hadn't felt in a while now; the bond between family was more than he remembered.
They pulled apart and George looked up towards the stairs as Hermione was walking down, "How is she?"
Hermione frowned a bit, "She won't come down."
He looked over at his brother, "I should go check up on our little sister, we will catch up later, yeah?"
Percy nodded, "Yeah, of course." Then turned towards the kitchen following Hermione.
George took a deep breath before he took his first step up the stairs. He had a feeling that this would be one of the hardest conversations he was going to have all night.
