Chapter 4 {Fire on The Mountain}

There they stood, below the towering Mountains. "Is it wrong I feel short?" Zoe asked, Emily smiled and facepalmed. "Zoe, we're on an epic quest, we could possibly die up there, trying to get a sword we don't even know if it's up there. And you feel short?" She said with a smirk, Zoe just shrugged.

"Alright, let's get going." Candy said, shaking her head, sometimes she felt like she was the adult, always having to look after them. Mostly Emily, she tended to get into the most trouble of the four. They all began walking, up the Mountain that made Zoe feel short.

"Do you smell that? Candy asked, "Yeah. Smells like... Smoke? Fire." Emily stated. "Are there Bandits up there or something? Refugees, Thieves, or more Adventurers?" Abi asked, worry evident in her voice. "Maybe, but not a lot of people live up here, aside from the guy who stole the sword." Zoe told them, "Who are we looking for anyways, didn't the auctioneer tell us who he was." Emily asked, they all shrugged, "I didn't really listen, plus I don't remember." Candy stated.

"Okay, well... we'll just look for a guy with the sword of Arthur Mystic!" Emily said, and they trudged on. It was snowy, cold, and windy. It was beginning to get dark, "Should we camp someplace for the night?" Abi asked, "Yeah. How about here?" Zoe said, as they came across a cave. "As long as it's abandoned, and there's no one else in it. Yeah!" Emily agreed.

So, Zoe took out some bedrolls and sprawled them out a ways from each other, while Emily made a fire, and Candy transforms into a raven, and checked around to be sure there were no Bandits or Thieves. Abi rummaged around her bag and found some food for dinner.

"Ok, I have canned beans, a few loaves of bread, and some cookies." She stated, "I am not eating canned beans." Emily said as she hacked a rabbits head off. "I'm havin' rabbit!" She exclaimed. "Sounds good!" Candy agreed, "I'll just have some bread." Zoe stated.

So they ate their supper, and three of the four slept, while one kept watch. Emily was on first watch, She was starting to doze off, then she heard a faint screeching noise, She stood up, checked the perimeter. Nothing. Then the noise got louder, it sounded as if it were right above her, She turned. Sure enough, there was a large flying thing in the sky. She ran back to the others, "wake up!" She whisper shouted, and kicked them.

"what's the hell, Emily?!" Zoe complained, "Dragon." She whispered, pointing up. The others got up with a jump, "where?" Candy asked, "Up, it's just circling around the camp. Put out the fire, quickly Abi!" She yelled. Abi used water to put out the fire, and ran back under cover.

"Be very... quiet." Emily said, a finger over her mouth to hush them. She slowly walked out of the cave. She drew her sword, and looked up. It wasn't there, She signaled them to come out, and follow her. "Slowly, and quietly." She whispered. They left the cave, and started going up the Mountain a good ways, Emily looked back, still no sign of it.

"C'mon!" She said, and began running up the Mountain as best she could. "The sooner we get out of here, the better." She said, "maybe it's gone." Abi stated, They heard the noise again, "Spoke too soon!" Emily yelled, "Come on!" She yelled. They ran as fast as they could. They came across another cave, almost at the top of the Mountain. "In there!" She yelled, the dragon right on their tails.

They dove into the cave, the dragon lunged at them, biting. It couldn't reach them. It left after Zoe had used a spell on it, it was an ice spell, to freeze it, but since it was a fire dragon, it barely did anything. "That was close" Candy said, They heard creaking, they looked down and saw they were standing on an old wooden door in the ground.

"Ah, Sh-" It broke and they fell down the hole. "Ow!" Zoe exclaimed. Emily got up, brushed herself off, and saw that there were four tunnels, "Crap!" She yelled, it echoed. The other got up ad saw what she was mad about.

"What do we do now?" Abi asked, "we split up, and find the sword." Emily said bluntly. "Alright." Zoe said, "what!? No. We shouldn't split up, what if we get in trouble?" Candy questioned, "then you scream as loud as you can. But if your dead, don't make a sound." Replied Emily, "Such a way with words, Em." Zoe smiled.

They split up, and headed down a tunnel. Abi was making her way down the tunnel furthest to the left, when she got snatched up! She tried to scream, but to no avail, her voice was gone. And whatever had taken her, was making it's way down another hole. Zoe heard a muffled scream, but it wasn't from beside her, as if from one of the other tunnels, it was ahead of her. She ran to find out who it was, but alas, she also was snatched by the creature. Voice gone as well.

Candy's wolf senses kicked in, and she smelled something. Going forward, she saw a cage. It looked like the one they kept her in when she was young, she was put in a circus when she was very young. And she now hates being confined to small places. She crept as far away from it as she could. She heard an old woman, cackling. Then she was snatched by the invisible beast as well. No screams to be heard.

Emily found it strange that it was so quiet, fearing for her friends. She came to a dimly lit room, only the light of candles. There was a large cage in the middle, and an alter to the right of it. Something, out of place, caught her eye. A large mirror in the corner. She walked to it, and looked into it. There was no reflection, She tilted her head.

She then heard whispers, and saw her friends, slowly and blurrily appear in the mirror. "They don't care." "They were never really your friends." "You think anyone could actually care about you?" "Your pathetic!" "Weak!" "Your...NOTHING!" The voices rang throughout her head. She fell to her knees, covering her ears.

The girls in the mirror had red eyes and evil grins. They laughed as they watched her, tears streaming down Emily's face. This was her greatest fear, that the people she loved most, hated her, or didn't ever really love her. "Your a failure!" "You will never amount to anything!" "You let us down, and now we're dead!" They yelled, and the mirror Zoe pointed to the cage, Emily saw three people lying in the cage.

She feared the worst, her friends really were dead, she did let them down. She did fail them. She felt as if she was supposed to keep them safe, it was her responsibility. And now, they were dead. The tears now stung her eyes, they were falling quicker then a downpour. "w-why? I f-failed....I can never..g-go back!" She screamed.

An elder witch appeared, "Dear child, why are you crying?" She asked. She touched Emily's shoulder, Emily turned around, She saw a large spider in the corner, holding her friends, gagged and unconscious. "Wh-what did you do to them?!" She yelled, and looked to the cage, it wasn't her friends in there, it was just some Bandits.

"You were the one who found my lair first, so you are worthy enough." She said, an evil grin on her wrinkled face. "Worthy enough for what?" Emily snarled, her sword drawn. The witch snapped, and an odd feeling overcame Emily. She felt like she wasn't in control, all she could hear was whispers, saying some of the same things as before.

She couldn't feel... anything. Her eyes went red, and she grinned wickedly. "Kill them!" The witch yelled, pointing at her friends. The girls were now awake. "Emily! Stop! This isn't you!" Zoe yelled, now crying. She feared for her friends, herself, and Emily. "Please, don't do this!" Candy screamed. "E-Emily...Please. You can fight this!" Abi yelled.

Emily just smiled wider, and her eyes blunted a darker red. She raised her sword. The sight of her 'friends' all cowering in the giant spiders grip, made something click. Inside her mind, she was there, just not in control of her body. "No! Stop!" She screamed in her head. Her body kept moving, not listening. "Stop! Please, stop!" She cried out. No one able to hear her.

She was about to strike, the girls were horrified. All it took was one second, and it all changed, "In order to stop this, I must do what I never wanted." She told herself. And the sword, instead of decapitating her friends, impailed Emily, not in a fatal place, but still. There was pain, stinging, and a lot of blood.

She smiled at her friends, and fell to the ground, her own sword had struck her down. But it was the only thing she could do, to protect her friends, from dying at their friends hands. Which weren't even her own at the time. Zoe used a fire spell to kill the spider, and Candy was able to tackle the Witch and stab her in the heart, killing her instantly.

They ran to the aid of their friend. Emily was breathing heavily, spitting up blood. "Emily!?" Zoe screamed, tears were staining all their faces. "I'm... S-sorry..." She whispered. "Shhhh, Don't speak, it's okay. It'll all be okay!" Zoe assured her, mostly trying to reassure herself and the others. "I-if I die...T-take my sword, to... my Family.." She breathed.

"Don't talk like that! Your not going to die!" Candy yelled. Zoe was using her healing powers to try and save Emily. It patched the wound, and the blood went back in, most of it anyways. Emily fell unconscious. "Emily? Wake up! Emily!?" Abi cried. They heard a cough and a groan. "Everything. Hurts. Everywhere." She said slowly, coughing up a bit of blood, the girls helped her up.

"I'm sorry." She said quietly. "What for?" Zoe asked, "You saved us!" Candy exclaimed. "yeah, but I almost killed you, and I nearly failed you! I don't ever wanna let you guys down." She said, a single tear going down her cheek. "You could never let us down." Abi told her. Emily smiled.

And in front of her feet, appeared the sword. She picked it up, and they began leaving the cave. "Hey, is that dra-" *Screech* "yup!" Candy answered Abi's unfinished question. Zoe conjured up a bow and handed it to Emily, "You've always wanted to kill a dragon. Now's the time!" She yelled, Emily quickly drew the string, and fired it at the white dragon flying towards them.

It hit the dragon in the eye, it screamed In pain, and fell. It roared and began walking towards them, "Crap!" Zoe put up a shield. Emily ran out of the protection, and leaped onto the dragons back, once it was close enough. "this is for the Dragonborn!" She yelled, and drove the sword through the back of it's head.

It was dead, it screamed and flailed around, tumbling down the Mountain a ways. Emily clinging to it for dear life. It stopped when it hit a rock, the girls ran after it. Emily crawled out from under it's wing, and held up her bloody sword triumphantly. "I just. I l killed a.....I KILLED A DRAGON!" She yelled and did a little victory dance.

"Emily! Your insane!" Zoe yelled, "I thought you already knew that?" Emily said as if what she did were completely normal. "You are such an idiot! But that was epic!" Candy yelled, hugging her bruised, bloodied, and scarred friend. "Why did you yell 'This is for the Dragonborn!'?" Abi asked. "Duh! Skyrim!" Emily said with a smile. They all shook their heads, and walked down the mountain.

"What? You can't say that it wasn't appropriate! I just killed a dragon, and you think I wouldn't yell that!?" Emily shouted, running after them. "I am so damn awesome!" Emily bragged, but not too much.

"Now where to?" Candy asked. "The swamps, which is where the dagger should be, hopefully that is." Abi replied. "To the swamps!" Emily yelled victoriously, and ran ahead of them. They stopped when it was turning dark again, they had been in the cave for a few hours, and it was already near nine. Emily sat by a tree, on a patch of grass. She took out her book, and began to write.

"Overcoming fears isn't easy, in fact, it's one of the hardest things you can ever do. But today, I overcame mine. Not to say I don't still fear failing the one's I love. Because I still fear that, very much. But when you have people that you love by your side, you can accomplish the unimaginable! As long as I have my friends and family by my side, I feel that I can do anything. Even kill a dragon! If I didn't have them, I wouldn't be the person that I am today, and I am proud of who I am. Slightly crazy, bad tempered, a complete nerd, probably the weirdest person you'll ever meet, but i'm also kind, brave, loyal, and strong. And my friends are too! And I need them by my side, I now know that, more then before. Without them, I would be nothing."

She looked up and saw Zoe throwing beans at Candy, and Candy was now a cat, pouncing at Abi. Emily smiled, and walked over. "Let's eat!" She announced, they ate and laughed, they got into their bedrolls, they looked at the stars. They were beautiful, "There's so many of them!" Zoe stated. They pointed out what they thought were constellations. But were most likely wrong, they didn't exactly play attention in astronomy.

They talked about life, stars, weapons and food, then fell into a silent, calm slumber. And when they woke, they continued their long, yet possibly nearly over, journey. The road of adventure wasn't always easy to walk upon, but when you have someone at your side, it is much easier.
