Backstory: Nightwing was born during the Great Griffon war before Princess Celestia and Luna ruled Equestria.  When she was old enough she joined the army to fight against the griffons and keep them from conquering Equestria.  She was one of the best fighters in her squad and would always risk her hide if it meant saving a life.  One such moment would change her life forever.  

More often than not, Celestia and Luna would fight alongside the soldiers, and on that fateful day Nightwing was nearby Celestia, close enough to see a griffon pull a grenade out.  Knowing exactly what he planned on doing with it, she ran toward Celestia all while dodging bullets and yelling to get her attention, but alas, the sounds of war were too loud.  So just as the grenade was nearing, Nightwing put all of her weight into body-slamming Celestia out of the way, and in turn took the full force of the explosion.  

Everything seems to slow down when you are in pain, because when Nightwing opened her eyes, she was looking down the barrel of the gun that belonged to the griffon that threw the grenade.  He was talking to her, but the explosion left her ears ringing so she couldn't hear him.  After a minute, he cocked back the trigger, Nightwing closed her eyes and waited for the shot, but it never came.  Ears still ringing, Nightwing faintly heard her name being called and when she opened her eyes again, instead of the griffon, she saw her friends trying to perform first aid and in the background Celestia was fighting with the griffon.  All she could do was smile at her friends before she blacked out again, the last thing she heard was Thunderstrike frantically yell her name, then all was silent.   

Months later the griffons had surrendered and the Great Griffon War had finally come to an end, and on that same day Celestia and Luna were crowned the new rulers of Equestria, all of pony-kind celebrated ... well ... not everyone was happy.  In a hospital at an unknown location, Nightwing was lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by her family and friends. She had not awoken since the battle, and her condition had not improved.  Her loved-ones had come to visit but were greeted with the worst news possible, she was brain-dead.  Her family knew that they had to make the choice to remove her from life support and were saying their last goodbyes when they got an unlikely visitor, Princess Celestia herself.  As Nightwing's family and friends stared on in shock, Celestia went on to explain why she was there.  

Apparently, ever since Nightwing had arrived at the hospital, Celestia would check in daily with the nurses to see how she was doing.  Then a month earlier, when the doctors said that Nightwing most likely wouldn't wake again, Celestia studied every book she could find about healing for a miracle, even the forbidden ones.  When she did find a spell, she knew that there were high consequences in using it, but she didn't care, if it meant saving the pony that saved her life then she would do it.  Nightwing's family were beyond ecstatic to hear the news and even after hearing the consequences, allowed the spell to be cast.  With that, Celestia proceeded to cast the spell and ... gave Nightwing alicorn magic.  Now, because Nightwing already had wings from her dragon genes the spell simply covered the top half with feathers.  When Celestia was done, everyone held their breath and waited.  

After what seemed like an eternity, Nightwing started to stir as her right ear flicked and she let out a soft groan.  The monitors started to beep as they struggled to pick up the sudden rise in brain activity, which of course, alerted the nurse.  It still took a few hours for Nightwing to wake up, but when she did, she saw not only her family and friends but some of her fellow soldiers and Celestia and Luna there to greet her.  When Nightwing was discharged from the hospital, waiting for her was a grand salute from many of the soldiers that survived the war, as well as Celestia, who awarded her a medal of honor and a purple heart.  

After the ceremony, Nightwing and her family were given a royal escort to their home.  After many years of physical and emotional therapy, Nightwing could finally go back to living life in peace.  Although Nightwing's new alicorn magic gave her an alicorn lifespan and she eventually outlived her old friends and family, she was happy and found comfort with her many, many other friends and few lovers.  And now she lives in Ponyville with her wife Pinkie Pie, her two daughters Diamond Meadow and Ruby, and all their friends.
