Headcanon: In my AU, night furies have a skin-changing ability like a chameleon.  Unlike a chameleon, whose skin color reflects its mood and can take on different hues, night furies only have one color unique to each individual.  A night fury will change its scale color from black to its "daytime skin" when it is daylight (hence where the name comes from), angry, territorial, or to attract a mate (the color change can also act the same way as blushing or the "wing boner" in my little pony).  The color of a night fury's daytime skin is typically a lighter version of their eye color with white markings.  Male night furies have two extra features that are only visible when in their daytime skin.  First, when a male night fury reaches sexual maturity, the tips of their wings and tail fins take on a reddish hue.  Second, males have a frill along their neck like a frilled lizard the frill's purpose is to attract a female, and the bigger the frill, the more attractive to the females (also acts like the MLP wing boner).  In this AU, there is no Grimmle the Grisly, no Light Furies, and the dragons stay with the Vikings instead of going into hiding (A.K.A. I don't like The Hidden World movie)

Down below is Alina in her daytime skin.

Backstory: Alina was born into captivity as part of a dragon fighting breeding program.  The Vikings would pit dragons against each other and make them fight to the death or till one surrenders.  In the dragon fighting ring, night furies were the most sought after because of their abilities and their rarity.  Once Alina was old enough, she was sold to the highest bidder and trained to be a ruthless fighting machine.  

As she got older, she made a name for herself as one of the best fighters in the ring.  Now, despite being a fighting dragon, Alina did not like killing other dragons, so she always gave her opponents the choice to surrender, and when they did, she would place her forefoot on their head and victory roar, but this would become her downfall.  One day as she was fighting, the dragon she was fighting surrendered so she gave her usual victory stance.  But little did she know, that the dragon tricked her so that when her guard was down, it grabbed hold of her free arm and yanked her off her feet.  Lying on the ground with her larger opponent's body weight holding her down, she was helpless as it continued to pull and tear at her right leg until it was torn completely off.  

Now normally anyone would have given up fighting by then, but Alina's will to live was so strong that despite being quite literally disarmed, she not only got out of her opponent's hold but also killed it and won the fight.  After the fight, even though she won, her owner had no use for a three-legged dragon so she was to be put down.  Fortunately for her, a Viking that was watching admired her fighting skills and decided to buy her.  Alina's owner was more than happy to sell her, as it would save him a lot of trouble and he would be getting paid, so he agreed.  Alina heard everything and was happy that she was leaving her horrible situation but she didn't yet know what she was getting into.  

Turns out that the Viking that bought her was Drago Bloodfist, and Alina had heard stories from other dragons about him and so was scared of him.  But Drago was surprisingly kind to her and treated her like a friend than a slave (Drago was so nice to Alina because he related to her when he watched her continue to fight against the odds with only one arm).  Aside from the bewilderbeast, Alina was his most loyal dragon, to the point that neither Drago nor the bewilderbeast had to forcefully control her.  This loyalty was further proven after Drago's defeat when instead of pledging loyalty to Toothless, she tried to fight him but was unsuccessful due to her former army mates stopping her.  So Alina flew away to a nearby island and on that island, she eventually made some friends, and together they all protected the island and its dragons from dragon hunters and trappers.  Alina and her group were so good that the island became a safe-haven for dragons and Vikings called it the forbidden island because any human, good or bad, was almost guaranteed to get killed.
