Effecting Me

So I asked my friend what she would like to hear about diabetes and she wants me to talk about how it effects me and those around me.

Now before I start I'd like to share some things. I am at Orlando Florida at Disney World this week. Yesterday I went to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where they shoot the movie Dolphin Tale. I saw Winter and Hope and it was AMAZING. Anyways I was buying a frozen lemonade because it was so hot. Anyways I was checking my blood at the counter and the cashier asks "Does that hurt?" I had to explain that I have had it since I was two. As we left my mom said that I should have told him "No, would you like to try." I was laughing so hard. Then I told my Dad what happened and he said I should have said "If it does do I get it free?" and I was laughing even harder. And if you are ever at Disney World you're gonna be happy you're a diabetic. You can get a disability pass and skip the lines! And you're in charge of your entire families passes. The guy handed me my pass after he entered my disability and said "She has the power." you all have no clue how amazing I felt. So there's some funny/good ways it effects me.
...
Okay I am back. Last night I went to Disney. Listen here and listen good. If you have a pump or pod change to do at Disney World go to the first aid to do it. Why you ask? I changed my site in the bathroom and I was sweaty so it started coming off. I decided to walk to first aid and hold it there until I got some medical tape(if you read this before it was changed I'm sorry) from first aid. It probably would have been fine if it was close. Nope. They only have 1 first aid station near the front of the park at Magical Kingdom. I was on the opposite side of the park. It was so bad when I got there that I didn't have an extra site ON me. I used medical tape and a bandana to make it stay until I got to the hotel, which was very uncomfortable(as in it doesn't feel all too great when you can feel the tube in your body). Well now that that rant is over, I'm sorry it really was a great experience I just think they need to have a first aid station at every section of the park. So I did have a wonderful time. I got to see the parade with lights, I rode tons of rides, I even saw the castle (real pic that I took in the top). Now back to some other things. I guess that was a bad effect, cause I was in a terrible mood.

Now when I am low, as in my blood sugar, my legs feel like jelly. I can't think straight and I normally can feel it. But I get easily irritated so I normally just stay away from everyone until I'm better. Now it is possible to get so low you pass out, if that happens make sure the diabetic can't eat anything before shooting them up with the glucagon. With some they are mentally passed out but can physically eat something. I know that I've passed out at thirty something before but have also felt fine at 24, which is dangerously low. At 24 I was swimming and didn't feel it til I got out. My friends know to get me help if I feel low and tell them I need help but mist trust me to do my own thing unless I ask for help.

When I have a high blood sugar....well..... I don't really know how to describe it. I just fell.....irregular. I hear that some get dizzy and all. It doesn't really effect my friends too much.

If I have ketones I have to drink tons of water and go to the bathroom a lot too. I can't do any physical activity and, if I'm in school, I normally stay in the nurse's office. Once, about a few weeks ago, I had my pod on but I had dialed down my insulin and wasn't aware that I'd left it there (.5 units an hr) I had high ketones for 3 days until I realized the problem. I missed so much school and I almost went to the ER cause we thought I might have ketoacidosis. Glad that's over.

Now despite what I will mostly say diabetes has it's perks. For example, if you're low you get to eat sugar. Like once when I was little and still taking long acting insulin and shots my Mom gave my shots to me. She was on the phone dialing up the insulin, lantus, and she gave me my shot. 5 minutes later she bursts into my room. Of course I didn't know what was happening. Well my mom had accidentally given me regular insulin, novolog, she told me I had to eat tons of cake and milk. The idea sounded glorious at first until I was at my 4th glass of milk and 3rd piece of cake begging my mom to let me stop. It was an accident so I have forgiven my mom, even if I do bring it back on her every so often.

Sports
When I do sports such as color guard at school I have to dial back my insulin and drink gatorade. This is because the more I exercise the more my blood levels drop. So I have had to tell my guard sisters that. Some freak out and others are very careful. Some treat me just the same. That is until it's water break and my friends Mouse and Jenny yell "Recharge!" which is their reminder to me to drink my gatorade. But they're great friends. Lots of my friends are. Which basically means they know what to expect if I'm low or irregular and help me through that but they treat me all the same. :). And some of my friends like Jenny, Mouse, and Jade are protective, meaning if anyone ever is mean to me, especially about my diabetes, they will willingly and gladly beat them up or teach them a lesson.

So that's basically me and how it effects me. My friends are great. If there is anything you guys want to hear about next I am very open to suggestions. #diabetic
