Chapter One
Another night. Dreamland. Thats what the white she cat had called it. Every night she found herself in a starry place. She had always fallen asleep just to go to that place. And in that starry place were many cats. They matched the starry atmosphere with their glimmering white eyes and sparkling pelts.
It always seemed as if they waited for her there as well. Of coarse there was no real way to find out if they were watching her closely or they couldn't see her at all. And every night she stared down at her housefolk's den. At her sister and her, sleeping peacefully in their soft beds through the wall of glass that separated them from the outside. She had occasionally caught glimpses of a silvery blue cat following her, even when she wasn't in 'dreamland'
It was skittish though, turning tail and running as soon as it was spotted. But White didn't mind. She understood how it felt to be shy. Or atleast, to be around a shy cat. She herself wasn't shy so to say, but her sister Patches was. White flicked her tail and did what she did every night. She sat calmly amongst the starry cats and looked down at her and her littermate as she always did. It was a beautiful sight, but she knew all good things have to come to an end.
The starry cats began to get up and move out as the sun broke the horizon. ' Time to wake up' White thought and closed her eyes, inly to open them slowly again, laying on her soft cushion. She stretched out and prodded her littermate in the side in the process. "Ow-" Her sister complained. White chuckled and stood up, jumping down from her elevated bed and making her way the what the housefolk would call ' The kitchen' "Hey!" She called up at the man. He looked down at her with a gentle look at patted her on the head. "Are you hungry, girl?" White purred at the attention and licked her chops.
She never understood what the housefolk jabbed about but she played along in any way she could. She memorized a few of the motions they would make, like how clapping their furless paws together meant that they are cheering for something, or how patting on a surface was a way of beckoning. She didnt quite get these strange rituals, but she loved her housefolk just the same, and he was very kind to her and her sister.
She was given her bowl of food and her fresh water, so she ate a bit, washed it down with some water, and went back to her bed. There wasn't much to do at her den, so she mostly stared outside and wondered what it must be like out there.
It seemed as if Patches had read her mind at the moment and she spoke up. "White?" White looked over. "Yeah?" she flicked her tail, urging her littermate to continue her thought for once. "This might sound strange, but do you ever wonder what its like out there?" she continued, "...Because I see you gazing out there alot..."
White smiled and softened her green eyes. "I do, actually..." Patches sat up and shifted uncomfortably. "You dont um... Ever think of running away... Do you?" She asked uncomfortably.
White looked down at her paws and clenched them. "I do..." Patches averted her eyes and sighed. "I figured as much... But as my big sister I also figured you would stay here for me..." White looked at the fragile she-cat with an expression of guilt. "I'll always be here for you Patchy, whether I live here or not..." she smiled, intending on lightening the mood, but to no avail.
Patches got up and walked toward 'the kitchen' and the rest of the day was silent between the two. And for some reason, only her great grandmother knew, it was at that time, White was most intent on leaving.
