The Salad Story is really funny, and true. Basically, The Monkees had just met and they were eating at a restaurant. Micky was a very bad eater and his salad was flying everywhere, and Davy was quite embarrassed.  

"You're a pig," Davy announced, looking disgusted.

"Me?" Micky looked up from his salad.

"Yes! Doesn't anyone teach you Americans how to eat?" Davy said, and silence fell between the men.

Davy could feel their eyes on him as he cut his salad and flipped it around etc. , showing off a bit.

"This, now this is how you eat a salad," Davy told the three other men. Davy then grabbed the salad with his hands, and smeared it all over his face, whilst the others laughed and they got the funniest looks from everyone in the restaurant.

That, I believe, was the start of the real-life Monkees friendship.
