Ten Features of an Interesting Book

I found these on the internet and changed them slightly to suit here on Wattpad. This was originally written by Corey Freeman and adapted by me. These are ten features on how to make your book more entertaining for readers.

1) Title

The title is what the reader first looks at, so you need to make sure it catches people's attention. The title is a symbol of how people will remember your story and the books overall message.

2) Cover

The cover is the second thing readers will see. Aim for an interesting angle; make your cover mysterious, exciting, fun, interesting, etc. It's your choice, but the cover counts alot.

3) Characters

The characters are what the book is all about, so obviously they need to be well constructed. If you're writing a Fanfiction, this doesn't matter as much as you don't make the characters yourself. But you still need to make them act like themselves. It can be strange when you read a Fanfic in which the people are completely out of character. But when writing an orignal book, creating interesting believable characters is essential.

4) Dialogue

Dialogue is obviously what the characters say, and it is obviously a big part of any book. Each characters personality almost dictates what they say and how they say it. You also need to consider the age of your tageted readers. Adult prefer a bit more description while children/teenagers prefer more dialogue. It can be hard to balance it out with an even amount of both.

5) Struggle

In every book, the main character (protagonist) faces a struggle which they must overcome, whether it be external or internal. To make things more interesting for the reader, the conflict must be both interesting and believable.

6) Fillers

Try not to use fillers in between main events. This can be difficult for new writers especially. People don't want to read about things that have no impact on the story whatsoever. Mentioning those sort of things is okay, as long as very, very little time is spent on it. However, readers don't want to have to read through pointless time fillers.

7) Food for Thought

A great story always causes the reader to think, and walk away with something they didn't have before. When you write a book, try to make it thought provoking and give the reader a new precpective of something.

8) Fulfilling

Nothing is worse than reading a book with plot holes. A good book should leave the readers wanting more, but not more questions. There's a difference between ending with mystery and leaving a gap in the story.

9) Interpretation

A good book should let the reader imagine things themselves. Give away just enough detail to set the scene and what's happening, but leave some things to the imagination. Give the story room to grow. While you don't want to leave huge gaps in the story
