[22] Vow

The time has come.

Though no one is ready for it, the day snuck up quickly and crashed over them like a tidal wave.

It is time to bury Fae.

Chad grips on to Emmys hand as they enter the church together. He wears his police uniform whereas Emmy went for a slightly fancier outfit. The dress she chose covers her shoulder strategically to cover the bullet wound that has been sewn up by doctors and surgeons in the hospital just last week.

The strong pair walks into the church and takes their seats as the ceremony begins. Several of Fae's fellow officers exit the church to retrieve the coffin from the hearse. Chad follows.

The six of them carry the impossibly heavy wooden box holding their partner and friend. They place it on top of the pedestal and take their seats.

At the front, a picture of Officer Fae stares back at all of the guests here for her funeral.

Chad stares at it as he joins Emmy at their seats. He remembers that smile. He wishes Fae was giving him that look from across the room and making him laugh at the worst times, not just her smiling at him in picture form. He misses her laugh and her jokes.

He misses her.

She died doing her job. She died protecting Chad and Emmy and any other civilians who may have gotten hurt by those dangerous men. She was doing her job.

That's the part that hurts Chad the most. She risked her life every day beside him. They risked both of their lives day in and day out and yet she is the one who put everything on the line to protect Emmy.

It should have been Chad and he knows that.

The service is over quickly. Fae would have wanted it that way. Though Cop funerals tend to be big and flashy but that's just not how Fae was.

Chad and Emmy exit the church together silently. Emmy wants to talk to him to get his mind out of this negative space. But she knows he just needs to process things in his own way.

She can't help him grieve.

She wishes she could. She wants to end his pain in any way she can.

Chad turns around just before getting into his car to go to the cemetery. He watches his fellow officers carry the casket back to the hearse and watches it drive away.

Emmy and Chad drive in silence. Not even th radio plays. Chad stares blankly at the road ahead of him and Emmy doesn't take her eyes off of Chad.

Watching the casket be lowered into the ground makes Chad sick to his stomach. He excuses himself briefly to throw up. Emmy holds his hat so that it does not fall off and get ruined.

Chad returns to the ceremony with Emmy and grabs a handful of dirt to throw in the grave. He vows with every ounce of his being to never forget his partner.
