5: Poison
I fume silently as I think of the oh so mighty Order of the Losers. How dare they think that they're better than me just cause they got a little lucky! We deserve that treasure! I could've done anything they did ten times better! But no, they're the ones who just get handed everything!
"What losers, don't ya think so Aiden?"
I whip around to Maya, the mere mention of those vile twerps making my face crinkle in disgust. She recoils back, fear showing in her eyes.
"I don't think they're losers." Maya takes a step back, Gill too cowers back. "I think they're THIEVES!"
I lash out with my sword, and my two friends scamper back. They know better than to cross me, not when they know I actually have true power. Not just some luck. I have true skill, skills that I've worked for. Jesse and his nitwits only have luck, and a lot of it.
"Those dummies take EVERYTHING they DON'T deserve! Think about it, they just so happen to be with Gabriel when the Wither Storm attacked and he protected them until they got to the Nether. They just so happen, to get a magical amulet to show them exactly what they needed to do! And SOMEHOW they didn't die because they were blessed with crazy amounts of luck!"
Maya and Gill stop being afraid and nod, knowing that I speak the truth. At least these two aren't blinded by the loser's lies like Lukas. It was so sad when we bumbed into him and he was practically worshipping them. Just another thing Jesse has taken away.
Gill stomps his foot in the ground. "If only we could get back at them! Take what's ours!"
I smile at Gill, a glorious plan forming. "There is way a Gill, it's called Karma. Since those 'heroes' have never really worked for anything, all we have to do is something good luck can't beat. Only what strength can, something that Jesse servely lacks."
"Well then," Maya smirks at me. "What do ya have in mind?"
"It's obvious that any external problem is just brushed aside, not even the Wither Storms were strong enough to take down Jesse's luck. So we need something that will get straight into him, a plan with no variables."
"Like, uh, a sword!" I face palm at Gill's idea, scowling at him.
"No you idiot! Poison. One well placed arrow dipped in the strongest poison will do the trick. Nothing can save him after that, and we will finally be able to do what we want without the mighty Order of the Stone blocking our every move!"
"Uhhh..." I narrow my eyes at Maya. "What about like, the poison? We don't have anything that strong."
"Ooh ooh!" Sighing, I raise an eyebrow at Gill. "Jesse's wearing that amazing armor that was just given to him. We can just shoot him in the head!"
I gaze up to the night sky, muttering "Why do you both have to be block heads?"
When I look back at them, they're shrinking in shame. "After our little scuffle with Jesse, I noticed that underneath his shoulder there's a weak point. Weak enough for an arrow to go through."
Maya cautiously glances back up to me. "What about the poison...?"
"Simple, we steal it. They stole our glory, one little bottle of poison isn't even close to even. That Ivor guy they're friends with is a potion's master, he'll have what we need."
Maya opens her mouth again, but closes it once I glare at her. "If Jesse and his annoying friends were able to break into his lab at Endercon, then so can we! All we have to do is get to Beacontown before them, wait until people flock over to them like flies, and steal it."
Maya nods, finally out of dim-witted questions, but Gill isn't. "Where would we do it? Too close to town and they'll be able to heal him."
I'm about to yell at him, Gill already bracing himself. But what he said made sense, too close to town and Jesse's good luck still might be able to save him. Then because everyone's blinded by his lies, everyone will think we're the bad guys.
"Wow, it's a miracle. You make a good point Gill." I ponder it for a moment, when I remember what the Order of the Idiots forgot about. "They're going to revisit the temple, and we'll take action when they're on the path."
"So, I know you're right..." I cross my arms at Gill, scowling. "But why will they be doing that?"
Sighing, I explain. "There were two floors to that temple, they only explored the basement. They said something about that Ivor guy knowing about it too, so he's probably going to point out the same thing. Since they're impulsive and never had to face consequences, they'll leave at once. By then, it'll be broad daylight to hit our target."
Maya and Gill both look at each other before turning back to me. Delightful smiles stretch across their faces as they start to clap. This plan is full proof. It's time for the tables to finally turn on our side.
"Okay, here's the plan." I point at Maya. "Since you're the fastest, you're going run ahead and get to Beacontown before those thieves. Wait until everyone's attention is caught up, then go in and take the strongest poison there. You know what? Just take all of the strongest harmful potions you can find. Just come back on the path and we'll call out to you."
She nods and dashes off. I swear if she fails I will send her into the Nether with nothing and block her way out. It's critical that we get that poison for this to work, so much is riding on her.
"What about me Aiden?"
I smile at Gill, and gesture for him to follow me. "We are going to make the hideout. Which means finding the perfect place, concealing it, and making sure we can actually fire an arrow out of it."
"Yes!" Gill excitedly pulls out his bow. "I can finally use my bow!"
"Oh no you're not." I snatch it out of his hands, not caring about his sad face. "You don't know how to shoot, I'm taking the shot."
He does that stupid puppy dog face, and I just roll my eyes. Although now I feel obligated to explain myself to this dim-wit I call a friend.
"I took archery lessons with Lukas when we both got bored waiting for you guys to finish practicing your building skills. And since I was naturally great at it, this shot will be a piece of cake."
"But you said that a bow is a coward's weapon and that-"
"I KNOW WHAT I SAID!" Gill scampers back as my spit nearly hits his face, I scowl before continuing. "That's why I only use a sword. Lukas and Olivia forever tainted this mighty weapon when they only use it to stay away from fights, but this is an exception. Understand?"
He nods rapidly and I hold my hand out for his arrows. Without a pause he reaches back and gives them to me. I put both in my pockets, and make sure Gill can see my disappointment. We don't say anything else to each other.
So for hours we continue to walk to the jungle silently. Once we get there, it's already midmorning. Giving us plenty of light to look for a hideout. It has to be elevated enough so where Jesse is walking won't be a problem, close enough to where the arrow can actually reach Jesse, but if it can't be too obvious or they'll see it.
Gill points out a lot of places to me, but I scold him every time. Can't he see that this hideout has to have everything. Not just the height or the placement or how concealed it is, but all of it and more. After a while I just tune him out and look harder myself. I hope Maya being smarter than Gill, but she generally can be decently wise.
Amazingly Gill realizes I'm ignoring him and stops talking. I mentally shake my head at him and continue to look. But when we start getting closer to the temple, I get more and more frustrated. None of the spots are good enough! I need this to be perfect! Can't I have some of that blessed luck Jesse somehow gets his hands on.
Then I see it. I see it in all of its magnificence. A cluster of huge trees creating the prefect platform at the perfect height with their branches. With a few well placed vines and leaves, it'll still look completely natural while giving us all the cover we need.
"Gill." My friend instantly stops and hesitates before turning to me.
"Yes?"
I point at the flawless spot. "That's our place."
He looks at it, and instantly nods. I know he doesn't appreciate its full glory like I do, but he just isn't smart enough to see it. But as long as I tell him what to do, everything will be perfect. Jesse won't be able to slide his way out of this one.
"Gill, make some shears and start collecting leaves and vines. I'm going up there."
"It's my last two pieces though! Why don't-"
I glare at me, his mouth hanging open in fright. "Don't question it and just do as I SAY!"
He scurries away and thankfully out of my sight. I begin to walk to the area, happy that I don't have to look at him anymore. Maybe I'll make him shave off his weird goatee thing later, but there are bigger fish to fry right now.
I climb up the vines and get a better look at the area. It's even better now that I'm up here. Only if Jesse's accomplices hug him while walking will they block my shot nor does it even matter where he is walking, I will be able to hit him.
Once Gill collects some vines and leaves, only my head will be showing. But even that will be covered slightly with some vines. The only way anyone will be able to see us is if they were looking for us. But the Order of the Idiots are much too arrogant and power hungry for that.
In fact, I bet Maya will walk right past us even though she'll be looking for us. I'll let her pass and call out to her when she's a good ways away. The look on her face will be priceless!
"Okay Aiden! I think I have plenty." Gill jumps off the vines and walks towards me, holding vines and leaves in his hands.
"I'll be the judge of that." I swipe the stuff out of his grasp, and look at the amount. Gill did get a lot, it'll be enough to make this place perfect. Not that I'll say that, I wouldn't hear the end of it for weeks.
"Hmm... yeah, I suppose this'll do." I hand the vines back to him. "Now place this all along the top, on leaves, everywhere. Conceal this place."
He nods and goes to climb higher up the tree. I begin to place leaves, making the whole thing just seem like a bunch of branches colliding into each other. It's absolutely flawless when I'm done, but that normal when I build. I am the main reason we won so many times during the building competition.
"Good Aiden?" I peel my eyes away from my masterpiece, I look at what Gill did. He must've learned from the best because it doesn't look too bad. Vines in the places they would naturally grow in given time.
"Yes, this is perfect. With it, we will rid this world of that lying thief known as Jesse who doesn't even deserve 1% of what he has. With him gone, true heroes who actually worked for stuff can be recognized."
I pull out the bow and point towards the ground. "Go down there and just walk. That way I can get a sense of how I have to make this shot."
Gill nods, but also nervously gulps. "You aren't going to hit me right?"
"Of course not. Unlike Lukas, I won't leave, betray, or hurt any of my friends."
Gill nods confidently this time and climbs down. It looks like Gill only had about 10 arrows on him. Too bad, but Gill can collect them for me. He's already down there anyway. Besides, it's slightly past noon now. Maya should be coming back soon.
I just watch as Gill walks, preparing how I'm going to hit that weak spot. It's pretty small and his arm will be blocking most of the shot. Yet as Gill moves past the hideout, there's this perfect angle that Jesse's arm won't block if it's swaying normally.
"Hey Gill! Take a few steps back... few more... STOP! Just stand there for a sec!" Now Gill's at the perfect place for a shot. And that spot is right in between a cluster of melons and a lone piece of coco beans.
"You can move now!" It's time to practice accuracy. Focusing in on a very specific spot about the same distance Jesse would, I fire. Dead on. I guess I'm just naturally amazing at archery, although this is the only time I'll abuse such luck.
"Whoa Aiden! That was amazing! We can't fail this time!"
"Of course not! We're winners, and Jesse will always lose against real winners." I spot someone running down the path. "Quick Gill! Grab that arrow and get up here!"
Gill quickly reacts, scooping up the arrow and booking it up the tree. I squint at the small dot slowly becoming bigger and bigger. Although I relax once I see it's just Maya, Gill releasing a sigh too. But why is Maya running so fast? Oh I swear if she messed this up...
"MAYA! UP HERE!"
She nearly jumps three blocks up before looking up at us. Taking one deep breath, she continues to sprint and launches herself up the tree. Something must have gone wrong for her to panic like this.
"Jesse.... and others.... close.... be-"
"Do you have the poison?" Now's not the time to have a conversation.
She nods and hands me three bottles. A shiny green, the beautiful poison. A dark gray, the wonderful potion of weakness. And a sky blue, as in the potion of swiftness.
"Figured... potion would... work faster... if it had... a little kick."
I smile, no amount of luck can save Jesse now. He'll have to rely on his own strength to get him through. No friends can help him, no luck, no powerful artifacts, nothing can help him. And he will surely perish.
"How close are they?"
Maya looks up, her face bright red and her features sagging in exhaustion. "They left.... before me... I had to... run off path..."
"Give me an answer! Do you know how close they are?!"
Maya lowers her head, still panting. "Close... a few minutes... Don't know... for sure..."
I huff and shake my head. If I were her, knowing that so much depended on getting here sooner than Jesse, I would make sure exactly how much time I had before the big moment. But I suppose she did what I told her to, can't expect much more than that.
"Rest, try not to make too much noise now."
She nods, curling up and taking quiet deep breaths. Gill too just quietly sits down, looking unsure and excited. They don't need to do anything now, I have it all under control. All they have to do is not mess anything up.
I pull out an arrow and dump some poison on it, even rubbing it on. Then I pour some of the weakness potion in the poison bottle and mix in all up. Then I rub some more on the arrow. I grab the swiftness potion and do the same thing. And then with the weakness potion again. Once the poison has been used up, I mix the rest of the other two and apply it onto the arrow.
Voices float up into our hideout, and we all freeze. Jesse is approaching, here's our chance. We can finally rid the world of these false heroes and take what's ours. I peek out and see him, smiling as if he doesn't have a care for the world. Makes sense, he never really had to work ever.
The arrow is perfect and I know I'll make this shot, nothing can go wrong now. Jesse's luck won't save him this time. I ready the bow and wait for Jesse to close to the spot, totally oblivious to the Karma about to impale him.
I suck in and pull the arrow back, aiming perfectly. His friends aren't in the way and just a few more steps, a couple of blocks, and he'll be there. I narrow my eyes right before he moves into the spot, and let the arrow fly.
The dark turquoise color glimmers as it soars throughout the air. I can see it already, I've hit my mark. Jesse walks right into the perfect spot as the arrow streaks towards him... and pierces right into his side.
He immediately staggers and falls, a big wide grin on my face. Gill and Maya each have their own. I giggle silently as his friends try to do something, to save him. But they can't, Jesse's on his own now.
Jesse will die, no one can survive that strong of poison.
****
Oh yeah, I totally think I nailed Aiden's perspective.
SO, there are two more oneshots also posted with this one and you get to read those now instead of waiting.
And just so you know, there's going to be a squeal to this. Not to spoil anything, but Aiden might have underestimated the strength of the Order. And definitely Petra's. (Although I still can't decide who's P.O.V. I should do it in... really need to figure that out)
So go on and read the next oneshot Nether!
