16: Memories

Maya sighed, rubbing her temples. She's been in the dungeons for a few years now, the citizens of Sky City would like to see her rot for what's she's done. And honestly, she doesn't blame them in the slightest.

At first she tried to fight back, constantly trying to escape and snapping snarky comments at whoever entered her sight. Maya kept up with it for a long time, her anger only beginning to break down just last week.

Maya slowly lowered herself into a the dark corner, hugging her knees to her chest. Without her anger raging inside her anymore, everything she's been trying to run from has finally caught up with her.

"Hey Lukas, any idea what we're doing for the building competition this year?"

A sob broke out of Maya, it was always this one. Always coming back to haunt her, never leaving her.

"I was thinking fireworks, but now I really want to make a TNT cannon. Although I can't think of anything more exciting."

Lukas, why did she push Lukas away so furiously? He never did anything wrong, he was such a great friend. Maya cursed herself, the self-rage and regret burning within.

"Oooh! Oooh!" Gill madly shook Lukas as an idea popped into him. "What about colorful explosions?"

Aiden smacked his forehead. "That's what fireworks are Gill."

"Actually... Gill just gave me an idea." Lukas's eyes glazed over, but a smile formed. "If we dye theTNT correctly, we could make rainbows in the sky! It'll be much better than normal fireworks, much more colorful and exciting and booming."

Tears ran down Maya's face as she buried her head in her knees, trying to muffle the sounds of her sobs. Closing her eyes as if that could block out the scene from playing itself.

Aiden rolled his eyes and smirks. "So we're basically building a fireworks cannon?"

"No no!" Gill jumped up excitedly. "We're building a cannon that will have bright colors burst in the air!"

We all blinked as we processed what Gill said, and started to laugh. Gill having no idea what's going on, laughed too. Only making our laughs louder.

In that moment, Maya couldn't care less if the idea was actually going to win or not. In that moment, Maya was just so happy to have this life with all her friends.

Maya lifted her head and cried out, her sobs howling down the prison hallway. Her entire body trembling as she brought her shaking hands to hide her face in. Her lungs wheezed as the lump her throat turned the simple act of breathing painful.

Maya wished with all the shattered remains of her heart, that she was in that moment again.

"Come on Cassie! The Festival of the Cat has started!"

Cassie looked up at her older brother, before realizing what he said and jumped out of her seat. Sprinting out the door, leaving her brother to catch up.

"Whoa, slow down there pumpkin. I..." Her brother huffed down the street, trying to stay with the ten year old. "...don't have your energy..."

Cassie looked behind her when she heard how far away her brother was, a whole ten blocks. Cassie dashed back towards him, only to start yanking him forward to get him to go faster.

"Hurry! Hurry! I'm finally old enough to get my own cat!"

Despite Cassie's frantic state, her brother chuckled. "I don't know Cassie... the Elders might not think you're responsible enough..."

The words stopped Cassie dead, her green eyes widening. "But- NO! I am! I'll, uhh, I'll prove it to them!"

With that Cassie streaked down the street, her red head hair flying behind her as she left her brother in the dust. It was an important day for her, you only get a cat once in your life.

Cassie rocketed pass the colorful stalls and delicious smells of the festival. She ecstatic to meet her cat, the one creature that she would always have. The one creature that would never leave her.

She had to slow down when she got to the park though, having to squeeze herself in between people to try to get to the front. Cassie just had to get to the man who would give her a cat, her cat.

Panting heavily, the small redhead got to the front. The old man smiled at her when she tried to talk, but simply didn't have the air for it.

"So you want your cat, don't cha little one?"

Cassie nodded furiously, too excited to form the words. The man rub his gray goatee thinking about it. He nodded and smile after a moment, getting up to undo one of the leaches on the fence.

With wide eyes, Cassie watched the stop by a calico cat, mainly orange speckled with black and white. And Cassie knew without a doubt this cat was going to be absolutely perfect and stunning in every way.

The old man placed the cat in Cassie's arm, the calico barely out of the kitten stage. "Now there you go, though now you gotta name it now. It's not yours 'til you name it."

Cassie scratched the calico behind the ears, smiling when it purred. "I'm gonna name you Winslow."

Cassie bolted up in bed, panting heavily. She looked down at her Winslow, lips trembling as she look at the only creature she has from home. The only creature that has been with her through everything.

Tears flowed out like rivers and her trembling lips broke out into a sob. Gently, she picked up Winslow, rocking him against her chest.

The calico, still mostly asleep, purred quietly as his owner pets him. Although another painful sob burst from Cassie. Wishing her brother was here to see how much Winslow has grown.

But her heart thumps broken, when Cassie knew she would only ever see him in her dreams.

Otto smiled as he watched the competitors play in the Walls, all of the teams working hard so that they might win. Now that respawning didn't carry such a heavy punishment, players seemed to be playing happier.

There are even other competitors watching from the stands now, cheering on their favorite teams or competitor. They aren't allowed to spoil anything, but things are how they should be.

Otto frowns when he remembered what the games were like, before Jesse came along and turned the tables on his old friends. What they did was cruel and wrong, and Otto has put in rules to make sure that will never happen again.

"Ugh, this is so boring. We should be allowed to explore! Be free!"

Otto's back straightened as the uninvited memory rose within him. He shouldn't be thinking about that, he should be enjoying the games. Where it looks like the red team has created axes to collect more wood.

"You know the rules Hadrian, no one is permitted to go into mist. Everyone who goes in there never comes back."

Harper looked up from whatever contraption she was working on. "What are the odds that there are even things to explore out there? It could all just be empty space for all we know."

"I'm with Hadrian." Mevia pulled out her diamond axe. "My new toy has been itching for excitement."

The crowds go crazy and Otto shook himself back into reality. The Walls were down now and the red and green teams were clashing furiously. The yellow and orange teams hanging back to take out the survivors.

"What da ya say Harper?" Hadrian slid over to Harper. "Think you can make something up that can protect us?"

Harper snorted, rolling her eyes. "Of course I can, but that doesn't mean I will."

"Should've know that you couldn't do it, but please don't make excuses Harper."

Harper stood up, cocking an eyebrow at Hadrian. "Oh buddy, I can and I will. And when I prove yourself wrong, you have to collect whatever I want for entire week."

"You're on Harper." My two friends shook hands, and I just smiled at them. Despite all of our teasing, there's little that could break us apart.

Otto stood and left, he's suppose to be narrating the game and isn't suppose to leave. But no matter how many times he swallows, the lump in his throat refuses to move. The only sounds he can make are strangled sobs.

His face crinkled up as he fights back his tears. Hadrian and Mevia are bad people now, Harper has her own life now too. But their times as friends is just too strong to ignore, strong enough to continue to break his heart.

"NO! Please! STOP!"

Romeo gasped, and backed away from the building. His eyes widening when he saw the building morph before his eyes.

The house exploded from the inside, anything not destroyed burst into flames. The woman that was just begging Romeo fell to her knees, crying out from the loss of her children that were in her home.

"That's what you deserve for living in the town created by the traitorous Xara."

Romeo bumped into a woman and whipped around, gaping when he saw the same woman begging him standing right in front of him.

Romeo raised his hand, the weeping mother completely oblivious. He pointed his hand, and silenced her cries. Smiling he turned back to the crowd, floating above them.

"Who's next?"

"No!" Romeo desperately grabbed his head, covering his ears and squeezing his eyes shut. But just because he could shut out the world doesn't mean he can escape his own mind.

The crowd screamed and the people frantically ran in all directs, tripping over and shoving others out of their way.

Romeo laughed and clapped his hands, summoning his new creation. A gaint ghast appeared, completely black with three faces. At once fire rained down on the Oasis citizens, their howls of pain making Romeo smile even more.

"Xara always bragged about how great her city is! Well watch this!"

Romeo lifted his head, trying to look for an escape route. Any way out of this. But he only smelt blood and burning flesh, his eyes stung with so much smoke that he can't see. All his ears could hear was screams of pure agony.

Romeo sent TNT raining over the town, chuckling that his backstabbing friend will no longer have a home to return to. And no bed anymore to rest in. But it was time to cover his mistakes. It was time to rebuild.

Romeo raised his arms, power crackling within his fingers. He sent it out, and bedrock swirled in the sky. With a pleased smile, he watched the light go out all over the land.

This chaos was really fun for him, as he vanished to go make some more.

With a cry of anguish, Romeo collapsed right there on the street. Sobbing into the ground as all of his horrific actions played in his mind. Sheer joy once traveled throughout his limbs as the event took place.

Now though, remorse and self-bitterness make his body shake when he remembers those times.

Jack slashed the armor stand, and then twirled around to deliver a more powerful blow on the stand. Practicing has always been Jack's way to deal with things, although it's not always the healthiest.

"Hey Jack, where are we going next? How about Mooji Lake?"

Jack chuckled and turned to Sammy, already bursting with excitement for the next adventure even though they just left the Sur'gao Pass.

"Easy Sammy, why don't we take a little break? Relax a bit."

Vos immediately laid down right there on the path. "I thought my prayers would never be answered..."

Jack released a fearsome war cry, quickly thrusting at the statue. His muscles started to tremble, but over exertion was no where near the reason.

"Awww... come on Jackie. Don't you want to keep going?"

"Yes but..." Jack settled on the ground next to Sammy. "I would rather eat this beef jerky that the Apex Hunters gave us."

Sammy suddenly plopped down next to the two. "Well I want some of that too!"

With scream of rage Jack used both hands to crush the head on the statue. Stumbling into it when he was unable to stop his momentum. He leaned against as he panted heavily, but still not physically tired.

With a chuckle, Jack reached into his pockets and pulled out the jerky. He tossed it to his two friends, who devoured it on sight. Not even bothering to say thank you.

Jack bit down on his. "Man we should've asked for the recipe for this stuff! It tastes so good!"

Both his friends nod, too busy chewing to reply to him.

Jack fell to the ground, leaning his head back onto the stand. His eyepatch started to burn his eye, or maybe that was his own tears.

"Although Jack..." Vos licked his fingers. "The recipe would be unless to you, you would somehow find a way to burn it!"

Sammy busted up with laughter, Jack rolling his eyes to Vos but couldn't help that small smile that found its way on his lips.

Tears flowed from his good eye, the eyepatch became damp too. Jack didn't even bother to wipe them away, just bringing his hands to his face. So he might be able to hide behind them.

While he's grateful for his new friends, his old ones have left a scar that will forever burn within him.

Stampy stood over the graves he made for Captain and Lizzy, sentimental since there wasn't actually any body that could be buried. He placed pink flowers on Lizzy's and red ones on Captains, before he kneeled down in front of them.

"Well it's been a year now guys... you wouldn't believe what's happened in such a short time."

Stampy swung his arms around Captain and Lizzy, bringing them closer together. "I can't believe you guys threw me a birthday party! Thank you so much!"

Lizzy chuckled. "Aww Stampy, it's no big deal."

"Yeah, it's the least we could do for you after helping us so much. And you better get used to it, we're throwing you another one next year!"

Stampy whimpered, suppressing a sob. "My birthday wasn't as much fun, and you wouldn't believe the new psychopath I encountered. This one was impersonating Jesse... and was way more deranged than Cassie."

A tear fell onto the ground as Stampy chuckled. "Although I bonded with so many awesome parrots..."

"Okay Stampy, truth or dare?"

"Truth!"

CaptainSparklez rolled his eyes. "Another truth then... If you had a pet, what would it be?"

"Pfft, that's easy." Stampy smiled wide. "I'd have a parrot!"

"Really Stampy?" Lizzy arched an eyebrow at him. "Why would you want a parrot?"

"Uh duh, because they're so colorful and a dog would eat my cake."

Captain and Lizzy smiled and shook their heads, Stampy always amuses them at some point or another.

"I... uh, really miss you guys." Stampy wiped one of his tears. "It's just not really the same y'know? Pranking Dan doesn't have the same feel anymore..."

Stampy burst into tears, his stomach pounding painfully as he sobbed into his hands. That stupid prank he pulled on Dan, maybe none of this would have happened if he didn't do it.

Even though it isn't really his fault, Stampy will always be plagued with guilt whenever he thinks of his two fallen friends.

~

All of these pasts of different people, some of them good and some of them bad. It's all only in their heads, but they know how painful memories can be.

****

Hmmm... hmmmm.... Does Stampy actually have a dog in the videos he makes? I'm sorry if I got that wrong, I don't really know.

So the ending's a little weird, I know, but I didn't really know how to do it... so that's the best I can do. Just... really don't know how to do it better.

I was planning on doing different people and a few more, but I felt like it was getting repetitive, so these are the six you get!

ANYWAY, tomorrow's oneshot is Petra! Bye!
