Chapter 18
"I am begging you to not bombard her like you did to the other people I dated," Lauren pleaded. She was FaceTiming her two best friends from Miami.
"Relax, Laur, we won't," Alexa assured.
"I make no such promises," Vero said, texting someone on her phone.
"Vero-"
"Don't worry, I'll make sure she won't," Alexa rolled her eyes. "You must really like her if you don't want Vero to see if she's 'worthy' like she did to Luis and Keana,"
"Are you kidding? Luis was a beard and Vero made Keana never want to talk to her again," Lauren chuckled. "But I know Camila's intentions are pure so I don't need the examination you guys give,"
"Aw, that's sweet. Is she hot?" Vero asked. "Do you have a picture?"
"Not a good one,"
"Does she have an Instagram?"
"No,"
"Facebook?"
"Nope,"
"Twitter?"
"Not that I know of,"
"Oh my god, she really is a lumberjack in the woods," Vero said, wide eyed. "How does she not have any social media?"
"It's just not important to her I guess," Lauren shrugged.
"Oh god, she's not one of those weird hippies who live in the forest and like, bathes in mud, is she?" Alexa asked.
"Ew, gross. No, she's normal,"
"And she's still dating you after she met your parents?"
"She hasn't really met them yet, but she will before we leave since they want to be able to sit down and talk to her. She should be here soon, actually,"
"That poor girl,"
"I know,"
"What time's your flight?"
"Like 2, Dad said we will get at your house at like, 4ish,"
"I am excited to meet your girlfriend, I want to see how hot she is," Vero said. "Thanksgiving this year is going to be bomb AF,"
"Laur! She's here!" Chris called.
"Send her up!" Lauren yelled.
"Is that her?" Alexa asked, trying to crane her neck, as if she could see outside the computer screen.
"Hellooooo," Camila dragged out, throwing her suitcase at the foot of Lauren's bed. She jumped on top of her girlfriend and attacked her face with kisses.
"Oh my gay," Vero said, mouth dropped open. Alexa smacked her arm.
"Are these your friends?" Camila asked, cheeks flushing. Her voice dropped, and it sounded possessive. "One of them isn't Keana, is it?"
"No, it's not, don't worry," Lauren murmured, still pinned down under Camila. She tilted her head up to kiss her again.
"Keep it in your pants, Lauren Michelle!" Alexa called.
Lauren turned to glare at her friends. "Alexa, Vero, this is my girlfriend Camila,"
"Hi," Camila smiled.
"Wow you are hot," Vero said bluntly. Alexa cupped her hand over the other girl's mouth.
"Hi, I'm Alexa," she grinned. "This is Vero. She is very gay,"
"Nice to meet you," Camila said. Her eyes lit up. "Don't you mean Vero gay?"
Alexa looked at the computer screen like she was on The Office while Lauren laughed and Vero tried to get out of her grip.
"Camz, shut up," Lauren said, trying to stop laughing.
"You guys were made for each other," Alexa said. "I can't wait to experience your gayness in person,"
"Lauren!" Clara called.
"What?"
"Bring your friend down so we can talk to her!"
"Oooh, you're in trouble," Vero laughed. Lauren shut the laptop.
"Am I in trouble?" Camila asked.
"No, why would you be?" Lauren giggled.
"For giving you that tattoo,"
Lauren looked at the crescent moon inked on her wrist. It was usually covered with bracelets.
"I don't think they noticed, I mean if they did, why would you think that they would know you gave it to me by biting me?"
Camila looked down at her hands. "I dunno,"
Lauren led her off the bed. "They're going to love you. C'mon,"
Camila couldn't shake the thought that Lauren's parents would hate her, or worse, pity her. She hated the looks people would give her like she was some helpless orphan who lives in an overcrowded foster home.
"Mom, Dad, this is Camila," Lauren introduced, pulling Camila to sit next to her on the couch.
"Hello, I'm Mike," Mike said, waving.
"I'm Clara," Clara smiled.
"Nice to meet you," Camila nodded, voice cracking. She mentally cursed herself.
Lauren grabbed her hand to comfort her.
Are you okay? Lauren asked.
I'm just nervous, Camila admitted. Sorry
Don't be sorry, everything is going fine
If Mike and Clara noticed Camila's nervousness, they didn't acknowledge it, probably understanding that meeting the parents is a scary thing.
"Are you also a junior at Prep?" Mike asked.
"Uh, yes," Camila smiled. "I like it there, it's fun,"
"Do you play any sports?"
"No, but I hunt,"
"Like with a gun?"
"I use my teeth,"
Lauren felt a sense of terror wash over her.
Mike narrowed his eyes at the girl. "With your teeth?"
"Oh, um," Camila cleared her throat. "You know sometimes I make jokes that I think are funny in my head but when I say them outloud they... aren't,"
"That's okay, sweetie," Clara said. "Do you have a job?"
"Oh, yeah, I'm an amateur autobody engineer at one of the shops downtown," Camila said.
"What's that?" Chris asked.
"It's, uh, a mechanic," Camila blushed. "I'm a mechanic,"
"Do you work at that Malik Auto Shop?" Clara asked. Camila nodded.
"Me and all of my friends do, there's eight of us, so Zayn doesn't really need to hire other help, and the money is my allowance,"
"And Zayn is..?"
"My foster father, I've lived with him since I was ten,"
"I hate to ruin this nice meeting, but we should start heading to the airport now," Mike said, getting up. "Where's your suitcase, Camila?"
"Oh it's in my room, I'll get it," Lauren said. Her and Camila made their way upstairs.
When Lauren shut the door, Camila flopped on her bed.
"Oh my god, they hate me!" Camila exclaimed, sighing dramatically.
"What? Where'd you get that?" Lauren asked, sitting down next to her girlfriend.
"Didn't you feel the tension? Oh wow, I can't do this. I suck at meeting new people and that's why I don't really branch out but when I do meet new people it makes me look like an idiot and-"
"Camz! Hey, relax," Lauren cut in, cupping Camila's face gently. "They love you, trust me,"
"Are you sure? Because they-"
Lauren stopped her rambling by pressing their lips together.
"They love you," she reassured. "What's not to love?"
~~
"Where is she?" Camila heard someone yell at the top of the stairs.
Lauren rolled her eyes playfully. "And there's Vero,"
Camila nodded, setting her bag down at her feet. She didn't anticipate a force to tackle her.
She stumbled backwards, trying to place her footing. She failed, falling over onto the ground.
"And I thought you would be excited to see me," Lauren said. The girl who was on top of Camila looked up.
"Hey, Laur!" she smiled. She got off Camila. Another girl helped her up.
"I'm Alexa," the other girl introduced. "We met this morning,"
"Hi," Camila said, shifting on her feet.
"And I'm Vero," the girl who tackled Camila smiled widely. "But you obviously knew that,"
She's scaring me a little, Camila told Lauren.
Yeah, she's a little forward Lauren said sympathetically. Sorry
"How was your flight?" Mr. Ferrer asked the group.
"It was fine, unless you were trapped next to the two lovesick puppies who insist on sharing two seats so they can sleep together," Taylor said.
"No way you guys joined the mile high club?" Vero asked. Lauren and Camila's eyes almost bugged out of their heads.
"You have no filter," Alexa murmured.
Clara awkwardly cleared her throat. "Thank you for having us,"
"No problem," Mrs. Ferrer said, "Alexa, why don't you help Lauren and Camila with their bags, they're sharing your room,"
On the way up the stairs, Lauren grabbed Vero's wrist.
"I can not believe you said that in front of my parents," Lauren growled. Vero shrugged.
"I've said worse when you were dating Keana. I'm just warming up,"
~~
"So what's Georgia like?" Alexa asked, setting down the bags. Vero had been staring at Camila with a sly smirk on her face, making the werewolf uncomfortable.
"Woodsy," Lauren said. "Not as eventful as Miami, but it's nice,"
"How did you guys meet?"
"We have a lot of classes together," Camila said, as she thought The moon goddess made us destined to be together.
"So Camila," Vero said, leaning her head on her hand. "Do you have any sisters as hot as you?"
Lauren glared at Vero.
"Uh," Camila looked like a deer in headlights. "I, uh, have three sisters. But, um, two are straight and one has a girlfriend,"
"Aw, dang. How did Lauren snag you?"
"Don't you have somewhere to be?" Lauren said, annoyed. She crossed her arms and huffed.
"No,"
"Actually," Alexa cut in. "Why don't we get coffee or something? We could take Dash and my dog to the park?"
Camila's ears perked up. "Park?"
"Yeah, there's a dog park downtown, do you have a dog?"
"I am a dog,"
Alexa eyed the girl, confused. "What?"
"What," Camila blinked.
"So," Lauren cut in. "Park, um, yeah, let's go,"
"She has a weird sense of humor," Alexa whispered to Lauren as they walked out. Lauren just nodded.
"What are your sister's names?" Vero asked Camila, squeezing herself between Camila and Lauren instead of sitting up front with Alexa.
"Dinah, Bea, and Ally," Camila said, fiddling with her hands.
"Do you only have sisters or do you have brothers too?"
"I have three brothers. Michael, Luke, and Shawn,"
"Jeez, big family. How old are they?"
"We're all sixteen, except Michael who's seventeen,"
"So are you guys like, quintuplets or something?"
Camila looked down, almost sad. "N-no, that's not it,"
Lauren reached behind Vero to touch Camila, to show that she was there for her even though they had another body squashed in between them.
"They're her foster siblings," Lauren said quietly. Vero's eyes widened.
"No- oh my god," Vero gripped Camila by the shoulders, before bringing her in for a hug. She rubbed the werewolf's back soothingly.
"I am so sorry for your loss," Vero said. Camila gave Lauren a look as if to say help me.
"It's okay," Camila murmured, patting Vero's back awkwardly. She wiggled out of the embrace.
"So Lauren tells me you live in the forest," Vero switched the subject. "How's that like?"
"It's interesting," Camila shrugged. "I live in the woods with six other teenagers and a foster father who's 25,"
Vero narrowed her eyes. "Is that legal?"
"No, but it's Georgia, so no one cares," Camila shrugged.
Alexa cleared her throat. "And you're a mechanic?"
"Yes,"
"That's hot," Vero said.
"Vero, I swear to god if I weren't driving I would smack you," Alexa threatened.
"What? Do you want me to lie and tell her that chicks working on cars isn't hot? Lying is a sin, Alexa,"
Alexa groaned loudly. "I apologize for her, Camila. If she makes you feel uncomfortable, please tell me and Lauren will kick her out of the car,"
"Hey!"
"While it's moving,"
"I'm not making her uncomfortable,"
Camila cleared her throat, "Actually-"
"How dare you insinuate that I make girls feel uncomfortable!" Vero continued. "I am offended!"
"Shut up, Veronica," Lauren grumbled.
"Lauren hasn't even been in Miami for an hour and you made her want to leave. New record," Alexa said sarcastically. She pumped her fist in the air.
"Hey look, there's that park I think you were talking about," Camila said as Alexa parked the car. She hopped out and sniffed the air.
When Lauren walked up next to her she slapped her arm.
"Do you smell that?" she asked excitedly.
"No,"
"It's grass!" Camila squealed. "Oh my gosh, I want to roll in it,"
Lauren stopped her from dashing off. "Easy there, there are people around,"
"Oh, screw them. Would it really be weird for a sixteen year old to roll around on the ground?"
Lauren gave Camila a look as if to say are you fucking serious?
"Don't look at me like that. I know what I want," Camila said, leading Lauren towards the park.
"Wow, I did not anticipate a lot of people to be here," Alexa said, looking at all the teenagers playing with dogs.
"Oh my god, there's a Frisbee," Camila said, excited. She turned to Lauren. "Can you throw it? Please? Just once?"
"Is that Lauren Jauregui?" a voice said.
Alexa, Vero, and Lauren froze, Camila was confused about the change in their demeanor.
"Do you think she saw us?" Vero asked.
"Obviously, she said hi to Lauren," Alexa murmured back.
Lauren huffed, putting on a fake smile. "Keana, hey,"
"I thought that was you," the other girl smiled, leaning in for a hug. Lauren reluctantly obliged. "Why didn't you tell me you were back?"
"Because she never talks to you anymore, not since you cheated on her," Vero scoffed. Keana turned to her and forced a smile.
"Victoria, what's up? How are you?"
"My name is Veronica-"
"Did I ask?"
Vero looked like she was about to blow. She clenched her fists and stalked towards Keana. Alexa grabbed her arm, restraining her.
Keana sent a wary look to the girl, before turning back to Lauren.
"So how long are you here for?" Keana asked, giving Lauren a flirtatious smile. "If you need a place to stay, you're always welcome at my house. It could be like old times,"
Lauren didn't realize Camila walked up next to her until she heard the smaller girl speak.
"Actually, there's no need for that since she'll be staying with me. Her girlfriend," Camila clasped her hand in Lauren's and sent Keana a death glare. Keana smirked, taking in the other girl's appearance.
"Where'd you find this one, Laur? Pick her up at the kennel?" Keana spat.
"No, that's where I got you," Lauren fired back. "C'mon Camz, let's get out of here,"
Camila started to protest. "No, let me-"
"Now, let's go," Lauren dragged Camila away, she didn't want her to like, bite Keana or something.
"Lauren-"
"If you walk away I'll throw the Frisbee for you," Lauren bargained.
Camila's eyes lit up. "Okay,"
"Not now, I will eventually, but not while my ex is watching us," Lauren promised, kissing the younger girl's forehead.
Camila made a noise that resembled whimpering as Lauren led her towards Vero and Alexa. They were talking to some guy.
"Lauren! Hey," the guy greeted, hugging Lauren. She looked uncomfortable.
"Who's your friend?" he asked.
The guy seemed too nice that he was fake, like the kind of nice someone is when they're trying to get into your pants. Camila felt something fishy going on with this guy.
"I'm Camila, you must be Luis," Camila smiled. Luis pretended to be impressed.
"Hey, yeah. Lauren must talk about me a lot then, right?" he smiled cockily.
"No, I just smelled a fuckboy,"
Lauren made a choking sound as she tried not to burst into laughter while Alexa had to slap a hand over Vero's mouth to keep her from hollering. Luis stood there, mouth open in shock.
"Yikes, never been called one of those before," Luis said, running a hand through his hair. He put out a fist, waiting for Camila to bump it.
"Respect, I won't even try to deny it,"he said. He cleared his throat. "Well, I better get going. Mom needs my help in the kitchen. It was good seeing you, Laur. Catch you guys later,"
Lauren turned towards Camila. "What has gotten into you?"
"I don't know but I love it," Vero cheered. "Keep this one close, Laur,"
"I'm really possessive," Camila murmured lowly. "You're mine. I just need a way for everyone to know,"
Lauren stared at Camila, trying to see if she could figure out what the girl was thinking.
"You were thinking about peeing on me, weren't you?" Lauren asked.
Camila's ears turned red. "God, Lauren! I'm not a dog!"
"Mhm, say whatever you want, Wolf Girl,"
~~
"Your girlfriend kind of acts like a dog," Alexa observed. It was 2 AM, Alexa and Lauren were on her bed, talking quietly while Camila was sprawled out at the foot of the bed like a canine.
"You think so?" Lauren asked, trying to act surprised. "I never noticed,"
"Really?" Alexa furrowed her eyebrows. "She literally is like a golden retriever,"
Lauren pursed her lips. "Yeah, well... she had an interesting childhood,"
Alexa shrugged. "That's okay. I swear, you guys were like, made for each other. It's like you're soulmates,"
Lauren found herself rubbing the moon tattoo on her wrist. "Why do you say that?"
"I don't know," Alexa paused. "But like, when I see you guys together, something just feels, I dunno... right. You seem really happy with her,"
"I am," Lauren said, almost immediately. "She makes me really happy,"
"That's good," Alexa smiled, then yawned. "I'm really happy for you, Laur,"
Suddenly, Camila sprung up from the bed, clutching her head as if she were in pain. It made Lauren and Alexa jump.
"Are you okay?" Alexa asked.
"Uh, yeah," Camila stuttered. She stumbled off the bed. "I, uh, gotta take a call,"
"You don't have a phone in your hand?" Alexa stated.
"Gotta go," Camila burst into the hallway, trying to rush to a secluded spot in the house.
Lauren sprung up after her, telling Alexa to wait in the room.
"It's probably something with her brothers... everything is probably alright," Lauren reassured, rushing after Camila.
She knocked on the bathroom door, seeing the light coming out of it. It flung open and Camila stood there with a wild expression on her face. Tears were flowing from her eyes.
"Is everything okay?" Lauren whispered.
Camila nodded, ushering Lauren inside. She sat on the floor. Lauren wrapped her arms around her as sobs wracked Camila's small body.
"What happened?" Lauren asked softly.
"It's just... they got a letter, or warning, more like it. It was signed 'J,' so they think it's him, James," Camila said shakily.
"James? Who's that?" Lauren asked.
Camila looked up, staring into Lauren's eyes.
"James is the vampire who killed my parents,"
~~
"Are you sure she doesn't want to come?" Alexa asked. "It's the Thanksgiving football game, a tradition!"
Lauren pursed her lips. "She had a pretty rough night, I think she just wants to sleep,"
"Is she okay?"
"I think she will be, she doesn't want us to miss the game though. We'll probably end up leaving at half-time anyways,"
Alexa shrugged and grabbed her keys. Lauren adjusted Camila's beanie (that she stole from her) on her head before following her out.
Football games usually bore her, it was the social part that she enjoyed. She would never admit to any of her old classmates that she was a cheerleader in Georgia, mainly because she used to be the kind of girl who would yell about how sexist the role of cheerleaders had become in pop culture.
Leaning on the railing of the football field, Lauren felt someone walk up next to her. She assumed it was Alexa, since Vero had to stay home to help cook.
"Hey, Lex, did you-" Lauren's face fell when she realized it was not her friend.
"Where's your girlfriend?" Keana asked, pushing her hair back.
"At home," Lauren said, emotionless.
"Now why would she let someone so hot out of her sight?" Keana smirked. "Did she finally find out that you're way out of her league and deserve better?"
Lauren clenched her fists. "Actually, she's sleeping cause I really wore her out last night,"
Keana's mouth dropped open. "Wha-"
"I mean, at least she lasted longer than three minutes, unlike some people," Lauren turned to look at Keana. It was an obvious lie but Keana didn't need to know that.
"You're sleeping with that little-"
"Careful, remember that she's my girlfriend," Lauren warned.
Keana grit her teeth. "I could be a better girlfriend,"
"Yeah, no. You tried, once. And you're not," Lauren smirked. "Sorry, not sorry,"
Alexa walked up to the two with coffee in her hand. She looked at Lauren, confused.
"What are you talking about?" Alexa asked.
Keana screamed in annoyance and stomped her foot, causing Alexa to freak and Lauren to smile amusedly. She stormed off.
"Jesus Christ," Alexa said. "What is her problem?"
~~
Coming home, Lauren and Alexa were met with Camila and Vero in the kitchen.
"Are you sure we're making this right?" Camila asked Vero, uneasy.
"It's mashed potatoes, how hard is it suppose to be?" Vero said.
"I am almost positive you don't put the potatoes in the blender to mash them," Camila scratched the back of her head.
"Hey guys," Alexa said, walking in.
"How was the game?" Vero asked, trying to shove the lid on the blender.
"Dunno, we left at halftime,"
"Hey, Camz," Lauren said, wrapping her arms around the other girl's waist.
Camila stilled in her arms. "You were with your ex, weren't you?"
Lauren paused. "Um, how did you know?
"I can smell hoe on you,"
Lauren cracked a smile, placing her head on Camila's shoulder and chuckling.
"Lo, I'm serious,"
"Relax, I just talked to her for like, two seconds,"
Camila still looked displeased, but noticed that Lauren was wearing her beanie. She smiled.
"I like it when you wear my clothes," Camila murmured, wrapping her arms around Lauren's neck. "It's like I'm marking my territory,"
Lauren giggled. "Are you sure you're not a dog?"
Camila's eyes widened. "I am a wolf! There is a distinct difference-"
Lauren rolled her eyes and pressed her lips to the werewolf's to shut her up.
