Being tortured sucks and it could cause a lot of pain, "which can leave people feeling both emotionally and physically traumatized." Take Neville from Harry Potter as an example. A death eater named Bellatrix, Barty crouch jr, and some other death eaters tortured his parents until they looked their minds because they refused tell to tell them about the proficiency about a boy being born as the seven month dies would end lord Voldemort. After they were done torturing Neville's parents leaving them physically traumatized in a state where they could not talk to their son. And it left Neville emotionally traumatized, because in DADA class professor Moody (Barty crouch jr) used the tortured curse, and it brought Neville back bad memories of his parents being tortured to insanity. 

So yeah that was the torture spell/ curse.
