Short Story

•SUNSETS•

The painted evening sky. A perfectly blended pallet of purples and oranges and blood red hues. The colors that were so different seemed to all merged, not by force, but will. Violent, strong scarlet held hands with bright happy dandelion and connected to royal, majestic violet. A harmony so perfect it was placed in the sky to be looked up upon. Peace so different from the world around her. Although, admittedly, the rooftop was pretty perfect too. Rea tilted her head down the slightest bit and tilted it side to side to rid herself from the stiffness that had bunched up in her neck muscles. Next time, she noted, don't look up for so long. Her eyes widened and her fluffy mei'fwa ears perked up at loud chaotic sounds coming from inside. The young half-cat had never heard such distress in a voice as now. She shortly after heard footsteps quickly scaling the stairs and bade the rooftop goodbye, promising a later return. She was sitting innocently on her bed with a book in lap when her mother came in.
"Sweetie, it's time for supper!" She said in a light voice. "You're still reading that same book?" She asked with a burst of laughter.
Rea looked up and giggled.
"Yeah." She responded shortly. Her mom the walked over and ruffled her hair.
"Make sure to be down stairs in five, cupcake!" Then with a peck on her cheek her mother left the room.
Rea had easily seen past her mother's cheerful voice and bubbly attitude. She had first seen her eyes, broken like shattered glass and holding in an ocean of tears she refused to cry. Rea, in the moment, found new respect for her mom. She was strong. She was the scarlet that held violet and dandelion together, always perfectly red. Rea smiled and pushed the haunting memories of a couple minutes ago behind. She had always vowed to be happy like dandelion, the bright color that lit up the sky. Rea, with a smile on her face, started down the stairs to their kitchen. Halfway down she stopped and realized her sagging mei'fwa tail would give her away. She thought happy thoughts and adjusted it so it was upright, and the tail was slowly flicking from side to side.
While eating Rea came to the startling conclusion that her dad was violet. A royal purple dangerously close to darkness, yet not quite there. And today he was fading into midnight, his eyes grim and still, the calm before a storm. Rea knew there would be no stars tonight, for with the storm came clouds.
Rea had gone to sleep easily that night, comforted by the thought that her family was the sunset. Her mind had strayed from the storm, and she was no longer ready for it. If it had come, Rea was not awakened by it. She knew it had, something was wrong this morning. She wasn't quite sure she wanted to find out. Slowly she sifted through her memories for a hint or a warning she hadn't noticed, something that would illustrate what could have happened last night. A few times she remembered hearing yelling through her window when she got off the bus, and remembered the week when her parents both ignored each others existences.
Rea couldn't believe she took so lightly to it.
Slowly, surely, silently, like melting ice Rea crept down the stairs.
Or, perhaps, like the sun. Sinking into a far away horizon. With this comforting thought, Rea rounded the corner into her mother and father's room. Her eyes widened and she stared into the half empty room.
"D-dad" Rea stuttered
"Wh-where is m-mom?"

I will post a part two cause i dont feel like writing the whole thing at once and that lovely cliffhanger above was a perfect spot to end.
