Chapter 1: The strange monsters in hoods

"That'll be £15.00," the checkout lady said to the man in robes, with her hand held out.

He grunted and buried his hand into his robe pockets, then picked out the muggle money he had left aside on the kitchen table earlier. He tossed it into her hand and without a mutter of thanks, the man strode out of the woman's clothing store. He recieved curious looks from every by stander he passed. Well, It's not every day you see a man dressed in black robes wandering around your local woman's clothing store.

Of course, this man had a name. His name was Snape. Severus Snape. The most loved potions master in the whole world...Not really, in fact, if there was a top one hundred list for the best teachers, he wouldn't have even made the vote. His greasy hair flowed as he walked through the muggle crowd and into the outskirts of Canterbury. Making sure no one was looking, he turned into a near dead black alley way and stopped. Checking for any life again, he took out his wand and murmured a couple of words. There was a flash of light as the Professor vanished into thin air and landed outside a cold park.

To any normal person this place looked like a decrepit wreck. The houses were falling to pieces and the evening mist curled round like a bomb had gone off. You could have mistaken that it was a world war two set. But to Snape, this was his neighbourhood home. Spinners end was the most unforgiving place anyone could go and yet here he was, walking through without any trouble at all.

For anyone wondering what the hell Snape was doing in a woman's clothing store (if you didn't I'd advise you see a doctor...) It was because of a girl named Lucy. They had never have meant to have met but their lives had become intertwined after Snape took a casual walk into the muggle universe.

She had needed new clothes after going to the playground with her best friend Shona. Shona was not the type of person Snape would ever be friends with, if he had his way, he would have personally kicked her up the ass by now.

Lucy and her 'foolish friend' had been messing around, when Shona had started to tell her about all the cool defence against the dark arts spells she had learnt over summer. Lucy clearly keen for Shona to show her the spells (even though it was an act of underage wizardy.) Shouting the words as loud as she could, Shona said: 'stupefy!'

Of course, Shona was facing Lucy... Lucy was caught by total surprise and flew right into a nearby swing. Lucy had bled a lot and had to have a blood reviving potion (made by Snape, of course. We've already established that he's the world's most hated potions master.)

Snape growled at the thought of that bloody child returning to Spinners end in a few days time. And would find any small malfunction of the girls behaviour to chuck her out. Smiling at the thought, Snape turned to his left.

Snape froze.

Now, many wizards are used to seeing un-ordinary things happening to them, from spells to polyjuice potion. But Snape had never seen anything like this.

He saw monsters. Full blooded monsters. They were humans but their faces were etched with boils, spots and scars. Their faces all together distorted and vile. There was at least ten of them, all shrouded in navy hoods, as if waiting for someone. Some had wands while others had axes and clubs. Only one had claws which were dripping in blood. The toxic fumes that floated off them made Snape gag. They hadn't noticed him standing there on the other side of the street, instead they seemed pre occupied with something dead in the corner.

Snape's stomach lurched at the sight of two measly looking pigs, peeping out of the alley way on the opposite side of the road to him. His stomach flipped when he noticed that there was a large amount of blood spewing out. They spoke in a bizarre language, while Snape could hear only three speaking English. It was poor and it seemed that only one of them could speak English fluently. Even though Snape must have been one hundred meters away he could still hear them because of the echo from the narrow street.

"This zis not the girl!" One of the monsters spoke, it seemed as if his voice was contorted, as if it had been scarred.

"Damn!" Said the fluent man," I promised master we would find this girl."

"We have failed!" Said the whined.

"Shut up you moron, we haven't failed!" He pulled the creep closer. "The girl lives here at 'Spinners end' and if you lot don't find her; you'll all be in trouble. Remember what happened to Gredit?"

The whole crowd turned at the thought, then quickly went back to scuttling around, looking for something...Or someone.

Suddenly the clawed monster let out a blood curdling roar. Snape who had been totally engrossed in the others, had not noticed the monster staggering closer to him. He stepped back in fright as it shouted at him, saliva spurting over him. He tripped over and saw the others running towards him.

"It's him! Get him!" Shouted one of the monsters, probably the well spoken one.

Snape's face was full of terror. He was trying to back away while trying to get onto his feet, but they seemed to have failed on him. He reached for his wand and pointed it at the clawed one. Snape heard more shouts as they advanced closer...

"Stupefy!" Snape shouted. The monster was taken by surprise and was hit in the shoulder, it recoiled in pain and shook it's head, as if waking up from a nightmare. At the moment this was Snape's worst nightmare.

"Wizard!" One of them shouted as Snape finally got to his feet.

Snape used his time well by pelting down the misty road, his heart thumping against his chest, as though dementors had appeared and he desperately had to get away from them, as if they had only left him with memories that he feared. He had dropped the bag of clothing and was running as fast as he never thought was possible. (He was careful, though, he didn't trip on his long black robes.) Snape was full to the brim with fear as he ran back round the corner.

As he ran around another corner, the monsters were behind him full flight. Snape needed to get away, back to his house and to safety...No! Lucy was at home, he couldn't go there! If they followed him Lucy and Snape could both get killed. And that was a chance he could not afford to take.

He slid on the floor as he placed a wrong footing, but he got up instantly. His breathing hard and he didn't know how long he would last. When he turned round he saw nothing. Snape was all alone in the middle of a pavement. All the houses looked identical and all had alley ways between them except for Snape's . As His house was joined to many others.

Snape went round in circles. Peeping into every crack and down the two roads that crossed under his feet. It was eerily quiet and Snape was dying of fear. He started to think about Lucy being alone in his house. He cursed himself for leaving her there on her own after her constant begging and saying how mature she was. Snape swore under his breath and blamed Shona. It was her bloody friends fault!

'She's too outgoing!' He thought. But why was he blaming someone else for his mistake? Confused, he decided to look around one more time before proceeding onwards.

THWAT! The sound of a club hitting Snape's ribs was unmissable. Hit from behind, Snape had been taken by complete surprise by the blow. He fell face first onto the concrete. Snape shouted loudly as one of the trolls lifted him off the ground and threw him to the other side of the street. He hit a bundle of dustbins and fell silent. The gang swooped towards him like a pack of wolves.

"This will be over very quickly, Professor..." One of the monsters said to the semi conscious man.

Blood dripping from his chest, Snape sleepily looked up at the claws about to swipe him to pieces. Snape knew the man was lying, this was going to be unbelievably painful. He braced himself for what he knew could be a very traumatic experience. The monster lifted his claws, ready to strike him with full blast. I can tell you now, all the monsters were laughing.

But Severus Snape is a clever man. I mean hanging out with the Dark Lord and working with dozens of foolish warlocks had it's advantages, sometimes. As the claws swept down on him, he flashed his wand at the monsters. The flash blinded them temporarily just before the stunning spell went to work. The claws were stopped in their tracks and the monster flew backwards onto one of the trolls.

"Just thought i'd pay back the favour..." Muttered Snape, as he very slowly got to his feet. He had time on his side again and limped away through the unconscious bodies. He didn't want to stay around. He just wanted to go home.

But Snape didn't have peace for long.

Snape found himself limping away minutes later. The spell somehow had little effect on the hoodies and they were running after him again. He didn't need this. The blood coming from his chest had given them a clear route to him. He was going to apparate but he couldn't do it in the middle of the street. He frantically limped into an alley way and prepared himself. The plan was simple. Apparate into his front yard and get help from Lucy.

He heard the gang running past and knew it was now or never. Before he could even think about leaving a cold hand grabbed his shoulder. He was spun round and punched in the mouth. Snape stood up instantly and apparated. A split second before he could disappear he was rugby tackled in the chest, taking a wand carrying creep with him.

The troll who punched Snape realised what the man had done. He ran outside the alley way and shouted at his commander.

"Sir, the wizard apparated somewhere. I don't know where."

"Where is Donbi?"

"He intercepted the wizard before he could vanish."

"Good..." The leader walked slowly towards the alley way. "He has intercepted him. Snape has been delivered to a town called Worthing. He should be easy to defeat" he said as though he was reporting the news.

"What sheel wee doo?" One of the not so fluent men asked.

"Did you not hear me!" The commander shouted in rage. His eyes glowed violently, but suddenly calmed. "You five follow Grambi While the rest follow me, we shall pay a visit to Lucy..."

"What do wee doo wen wee find him?"

It took all the commanders strength not to hit the thing. He spoke the last words dangerously.

"Kill him."

He spun on his feet and walked into the distance with half his clan following him, while the rest stayed. One of the wizard trolls took charge and ordered them all to apparate. He would not disappoint his master again.
