Chapter 2: Summer Letters

Having gone through her daily dance classes and a walk through the park with Harry, Lily showers and puts on some comfortable clothing, sitting down with a book. Tapping on her window draws Lily's eyes away from her book. Looking up she sees a regal-looking eagle owl sitting outside, tapping on the glass. Walking over she opens the window slowly, wondering who it could belong to. The owl takes a step forward toward her over the window stool holding out its leg. She takes the letter looking at the neat green script spelling out Draco's name.

She excitedly tears open the envelope, pulling out the letter inside she sits back in her comfy chair.

Smiling, she grabs some parchment paper and her favorite mauve pen, setting up her lapboard she pets Draco's owl while she writes a response.

Folding the letter she takes one of her pink-tinted envelopes and puts the letter inside. She peels the wax seal off of Draco's letter and holds it under a match. She watches as the emerald wax slowly gets shiny and droopy until it drips onto her envelope. Waiting for it to become slightly more solid and moldable she looks around her room for something to seal it with. Finding the necklace Harry gave her in her jewelry box she quickly presses it into the wax looking at the heart-shaped seal. She rushes to Harry's room and grabs an owl treat next to Hedwig's cage, the owl hoots at her gently. Feeling bad, Lily gives her a treat and a little pet on the chest feathers before rushing back to her room. She feeds the eagle owl while she ties the letter to his leg. The owl lets out a happy shriek and takes off through the window.

Happy with the way things have gone so far today Lily walks out of her brightly lit room into the hallway. The smell of tea drifts up the staircase as she walks closer to the sitting room. Entering the room she can see her aunt crocheting some long something while her cousin sat quietly on the ground watching tv. Looking up, Petunia smiles at her angel when she sits next to her.

"Hello my dear angel, how are you?" Petunia inquires, holding her crocheting in one hand as she hugs her niece.

"I am a good auntie. I just got a letter and my friend was wondering when we are going to Diagon Alley to get new school supplies. He's hoping we could meet up." Lily broaches the subject softly.

Petunia's face falls from her gentle smile to a scowl, Dudley whips around, eyes wide. "You've been getting letters?" Petunia asks, voice quivering with something Lily cannot comprehend. "That owl is not supposed to leave this house, BOY!" Petunia begins calling for Harry but Lily quickly waves her hands.

"No, no, no, Auntie, she moves closer, stopping Petunia's call. "Harry didn't send out Hedwig, my friend sent me a letter using his owl. Most everyone at school has an owl and if they don't their family does."

Before anything else can be said, Harry runs into the room, panting heavily. "Yes, Aunt Petunia?" He asks, standing straight and looking at his family.

Petunia glances at Lily before giving Harry a stern look. "Never mind, go do the dishes."

"Yes aunt Petunia," Harry says, leaving.

Petunia and Lily continue to talk about the possibility of going to Diagon Alley as Petunia slowly gets more and more irritated. Not wanting to talk about magic, much less about her beloved niece going to shop for magical school supplies or going meeting up with any magical freaks. A phone rings in the background and they hear Vernon answer it. They pay no mind until he is suddenly shouting.

"THERE IS NO HARRY POTTER HERE! I DON'T KNOW WHAT SCHOOL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! NEVER CONTACT ME AGAIN! DON'T YOU COME NEAR MY FAMILY!!"

Petunia rises from the couch and turns to both of the children seated in the living room. "I am going to ask Vernon what that was about, Dudley dearest you might want to go upstairs, you don't want to hear this." She then turns to Lily. "And Lily darling, I haven't seen you practicing your ballet at all since getting back. You should probably go practice." Petunia then leaves the room.

Rising from the couch, Lily goes back upstairs to her room. She pulls on stretchy pants and a nice shirt then begins doing her stretches. She goes to do her splits but when she goes down she finds that she is not as flexible as she was at the beginning of the summer. Well, I guess that's what happens when we don't stretch. She continues to do stretches that will help with her splits until she feels properly stretched. She then pulls out her ballet board. Pulling on her pointe shoes she begins her regular warm-ups, struggling just a little from a lack of practice.

Amid her practice her aunt walks into the room, sitting at her desk. When she goes to stop her aunt tells her to continue. "I'm just watching."

She begins practicing pirouettes and struggles a little with spotting and getting as many turns as she used to be able to get. She falls out of them twice before her aunt speaks up.

"Hmm, I thought so." Petunia stands and goes to stand in front of her niece, setting her hands on her shoulders. "Lily, how often did you practice while at that school?"

Lily thinks about how much she practices and looks down at the ground. "Well, I practiced a lot in the beginning but not so much near the end of the year."

"What was that?"

"I-I practiced a lot at the beginning of the year, but a-as year went on I, well I didn't practice as much." She feels disappointed in herself.

Petunia hums, "I can tell. Your ankles are much weaker and you aren't as good as you were when you left. I will call Mrs. Matelyn and see if she has any class openings at her studio. You need to keep practicing for a few more hours. I'll call you when dinner is ready." Petunia leaves the room, going to prepare dinner for everyone.

"Yes ma'am," Lily mumbles after her aunt, turning on some music and continuing her practice.
