Chapter 50. Rebellion

It was easy for Nicolas to hype up a crowd while Johanna did all the dirty work in the shadows. For her, it was the spell that mattered, the very feeling of darkness going straight through her that filled her and then left her completely empty. She would look out the window and envy as Angelina played with the children, as if time itself was not a master to her. The children surrounding her would laugh and cheer as the keeper of light let in a little bit of Aslan to everyone's heart. Johanna would look, but she wouldn't let any tears fall from her cheeks, for tears were for the weak.

The darkness was now cloaked under the most powerful spell, and she already knew where the tree to other worlds was. All she had to do, was wait for Nicolas to start a rebellion. Questioning her morals, Johanna finally sat down on a chair to rest from the magic she had been doing day and night, to finally clear her head. She had not seen the kings and queens for a while now, knowing that Peter would be worried about her, as he is for every other guest of his kingdom. Johanna finally decided to step away from the shadows and into the light of day. Pulling herself off the chair and taking a charge at the door, there was an unspoken force that seemed to stop her from going outside. She felt like an old hag locked up in her own prison, when she could be enjoying the rays of the sun.

"Let me out!" She screamed at the door as it instantly cracked open. Yes, even wood learned to obey her.

Slowly taking her foot out the front door and letting the sun which was coming through the windows in the hall reach it, Johanna furrowed her eyebrows and proceeded with her way out. Around every corner, another shadow would be watching her, hating that she could be in the light. She stepped out of the room completely and made her way towards a silhouette of a little girl who was making herself a doll out of the twigs and leafs she found outside. As the girl slowly started to turn around, her eyes widened until she screamed in fear at Johanna. She covered her face, only seeing the little girl running further away from her. She knew that the screams would attract people, so she quickly crawled back into her room and looked at herself in the mirror. Silver all over her face, sparkling like a curse.

Her last drop of anger was spilled and she could not take the sight of the happy Narnians anymore. Looking out into the window, Johanna didn't care to turn around to face Nicolas who walked in a few seconds after her incident.

"What's wrong?" He looked at her cautiously.

"Start the rebellion." Johanna raised her hand and then swung it down in a swift motion.

Nicolas bowed his head and walked out of the room, a bit frightened by her. Of course, he had a plan of his own, but she still possessed the power to destroy him just by saying one word. She was too powerful, and he needed her. Naturally, he was afraid that she wasn't sane enough to start anything. Like all things, his selfishness and need for success forced him to do whatever it takes.

Starting with small uprisings in the village around Cair Paravel, Nicolas managed to quietly convince some of the Narnians to go against the kings and queens. He would tell them that the only reason they are here was to rule over the Narnians and they had no intention to protect them. The fear of the people drove them to do whatever it takes to be safe. Even if they had to overthrow their own king. Nicolas knew that he could only get his power if one king falls, the most important king, the high king Peter.

In Cair Paravel, none of the kings and queens suspected the rebellion. However when word came from Reepicheep that an army is gathering around the castle with Peter did not call, all of them were worried. Susan said that it might be an army to protect them and Lucy agreed, however the men were not so positive. Their main priority was to keep each other safe.

"We might even have to leave Cair Paravel," said Caspian, looking outside the window.

Lucy sat down and crossed her arms, she didn't want to leave, " why are we afraid of our own people?"

"We need to keep Peter safe Lucy, he needs to get out of Cair Paravel because he is the high king, and if they want to take out anyone, it will surely be him." Edmund stood up and spoke. It was true, and they did trust Edmund's judgement.

Angelina did not say a word as they all discussed what to do. It was agreed that the keeper of light was to go wherever Peter would go. The two of them were the most important people in Narnia. Their deaths would mean the death of all good itself.

"Lucy and I will stay behind to not raise suspicion, and you three will leave the castle walls." Edmund pointed at Susan Peter and Angelina.

Standing up from her chair, Angelina furrowed her eyebrows, "I am not leaving!"

"You have to, there is no other way." Edmund wouldn't listen.

"We don't even know if these soldiers are doing anything bad, maybe they are-"

"There are already rumors of a rebellion, Angelina. They're killing anyone who stands against them!" Edmund cut her off with a raised voice.

Taking her by the hand, Peter led Angelina and Susan away. They had to prepare for the journey ahead, and as much as it pained her to leave Edmund's side, she knew he would not let her stay. Being the keeper of light was a very stressful thing, people put down their lives for your sake. She had never felt this important before, and it was very overwhelming.

They were to leave at night, that was the safest time to quickly get to the port and board the Dawn Treader once more. Somehow, she still felt unsafe. Her mind was scattered. Something was happening, she could feel it. Repeating to herself over and over again that things would be alright, she closed her eyes to clear her mind. Then suddenly came a fateful knock on her door.

She opened it, peering into her room was Edmund, who grabbed her by the hand and pulled her out into the hallway. At first she was happy to see him, but his lack of explanation and hasty decision worried her. He didn't explain, just kept dragging her somewhere.

"Edmund, what's wrong?" She asked, as she tried to loosen his grip on her wrist.

He turned back to glance at her, "they have breached the castle, you three are leaving now."

His alarming words made her head spin. It was all happening far too quickly. She could hear the sounds of swords clinking against each other, guards screaming as metal blades poked through their armor and into their flesh. Feeling her whole body start to shake, she forgot that she was holding onto Edmund. He pushes her up against the wall as a couple of guards ran past them. Peeking through the ending of the hall to look out for something, he retracted.

"That way isn't safe anymore, we shall have to go through the summer balcony," he pulled her back with him. The summer balcony Edmund was talking about was large. It was meant for special occasions such as wedding ceremonies or the visits of Aslan. Edmund opened the large glass doors that were guarding it. There was a set of outside stairs which lead to the port-side of Cair Paravel. In the middle of the balcony stood a tree, tall and large, it's branches falling to the ground as if weeping.

Suddenly, she twirled out of his grip and stopped walking right before they reached the stairs, "I am not leaving. I can fight. I was meant to fight, remember!"

"Not like this," Edmund turned back. His foot was reaching down to the top steps of the stairs. He held his hand out for her to grab, but he noticed her firm demeanor. Arms crossed and eyebrows furrowed. A part of him didn't want to deal with her childish nonsense, he could always pull her down by force, but Edmund couldn't.

"Edmund, I have Aslan's light, I can stay here with you and-"

"I'd rather have you safe than here with me. If your life depends on it, than I will sacrifice time with you for your safety," Edmund stopped her from talking.

"Have you ever bothered to ask what I want? I mean sure I can't fight as well as you can, but I can defend myself, and you need me. You need Aslan's light." She tried to prove her point.

"I don't really care about what you want right now, your safety is all that matters." He wouldn't back down.

Grabbing her by the arms and spinning her around, Edmund looked her right into the eyes until the both of them gasped and turned to the strange person in the distance who cleared their throat. They both looked into the direction of the castle from which they just ran out of.

"What a pitiful sight, you are finally fighting." Johanna emerged out of the shadows like a ghost.

Instantly Angelina pulled her hands away from Edmund so she could make the light of Aslan work. To her surprise it worked, and she no longer felt as weak as she did. As it shined from her hands, creating a magical force, the large tree in the middle started moving until it created a gap in its bark. It looked strangely like a portal, and Edmund instantly recognized it as the door Aslan sent him and his siblings back to London once.

Smiling widely, Johanna let her darkness out to battle Angelina's light. Edmund was about to grab Johanna to stop her, when Nicolas attacked him with a sword, knocking Edmund down to the ground.

"Edmund!" Angelina screamed and turned around, creating the time for Johanna to pull her closer to her.

"What do you want from us?!" Angelina looked into her eyes filled with silver.

Johanna smiled, "I want you to go back to where you came from," she pushed Angelina into the gap between the tree.

The girl tumbled into the transparent portal, letting out a last ray of light from her hands as she stared at Johanna's evil smile and heard Edmund's broken scream. Angelina's head started spinning and Narnia was further and further away from her. She could hear the sound of a coming train and closed her eyes as her head collided with the cold ground of the underground train station.

Just like that, the light was gone from Narnia, back to her own world and there was nothing Edmund, nor the rest of the Narnians could do, for such was the deep magic. It was scary and unpredictable.
