Chapter 42. Keeper Of Darkness
She had almost forgotten her home, until it came to her in a dream. That familiar London street that she wished her mother never moved to. The street felt somber and sad, with cold rain washing the sins of people living on it away. With those people, it washed her mothers sins away, and so it tried to wash hers. For some reason, she clenched to them, not wanting them to go just yet, knowing they were the only source of release she had. To her surprise, she remembered that she was safely tucked away in a royal bed of Cair Paravel, in a completely different world called Narnia.
Angelina shot her eyes open and looked around the dark room. It wasn't a small apartment in London like she dreamed, it was a huge royal room that surrounded her. Tall walls, a big balcony right in front of her bed. She missed her mother, who was very wise and would always help her with big life decisions that she had to take. The room she was now in was much larger than any room she had ever lived in, but it was missing that particular feel of coziness, it was missing the exact aspects that a small room would have.
Breathing in and out, she tried to fall back asleep but found that she couldn't. The crisp air filling the room from the window made it harder on her, the quite was distracting her from sleep. The air was so fresh, for the first time she thought of how not used to it she was. Not hearing the sound of cars zooming through the streets made her wish she could, at least to their sound she could fall asleep quickly. White noise helped her sleep.
Frustrated, she threw the covers off her and stood up from the bed. Pacing around the room and trying to think of something other than home, she still couldn't feel tired to fall asleep. Instead her mind went flying to her childhood and how her mother would carry her around at night just to help her sleep, how she would fall asleep on her shoulder in the dead of night. She missed her mother even more with each second she thought of her. The pull was stronger than ever, Angelina promised herself that when the war was over, she would do all in her strength to go back. Her mind didn't even go wondering to Edmund and what she would do about him, she figured that he would be against the idea.
Thinking a little bit more, she realized that the next day was supposed to be her birthday. It was strange, no one knew that it was her birthday, but she did. Would she have to tell them, or should she keep it a secret. Besides, turning 19 was quite a big deal, probably in Narnia it was a big deal as well. Without a clear decision, Angelina figured she would sleep on it and solve things tomorrow.
The next day, her mood was not very different from any other day. She didn't feel older, she didn't feel any change. Looking in the mirror, in the face of an adult, she still felt like a child. Taking a breath, she cleaned herself up and walked out of the room into the main dinning area where all the Pevensies and guests were gathered.
The men stood up greeting her, and the ladies smiled. Edmund pulled out a chair like a real gentleman and Johanna only gave her an angry glance.
"Good morning, Angelina." Lucy smiled at her.
Angelina bowed her head down, "good morning Lucy, and how are you this morning?"
"Very good, and yourself?" Lucy smiled even brighter, as if that was possible.
"Good as well, considering it is my birthday." Everyone stopped eating. Edmund put his spoon full of porridge down and Peter turned to Angelina in shock.
"Your birthday?" Edmund mumbled, barely letting anyone hear.
Peter stood up from his chair, "well goodness gracious this is unacceptable! You deserve a ball. How old are you now?"
"Nineteen." Angelina laughed at his outburst.
"Well heavens! Even more unacceptable! You need a ball right away. I will command the servants to throw one." He raised his hand signaling the staff.
"No-no!" Angelina stopped him by grabbing his risen hand, "if you will throw me a ball it will only be for us, no big deal people. Just us, the castle family!" She asked.
Peter smiled, "you don't really like huge parties do you?"
"No, not really." Angelina smiled weakly.
"That's quite alright then! We will still throw you a ball, the only guests invited are the ones sitting at this table! Edmund, you are white as a ghost, say something brother." Peter turned to his younger brother.
Edmund cleared his throat, "you didn't tell me it was your birthday."
"You never asked." Angelina raised her eyebrow and gave him a soft smile.
Susan rolled her eyes and laughed to herself. She never really did like the way her younger brother flirted, she thought it was so old fashioned. He did grow up in Narnia more than London, but she hoped that basic curtsy rules would stay with him. She always tried to make the perfect gentleman out of him without actually seeing that he was like that on his own. He didn't need a handful of roses to win a girls heart, he had his own heart for that.
Johanna stood up from the table and asked to be excused. There was a moment of silence and glances at each other, but Peter permitted her to go. She went flying out the door and up the steps to the dark tower. Falling onto the ground she sobbed into her arm until some force picked her up. Johanna felt the coldness of the tower wall behind her, her head hit the stone. She watched a mass of green fog gather around the room.
"Do not cry, it is pathetic!" Jadis' voice was heard.
Johanna pushed herself off the wall, her anger gave her enough strength, "he doesn't love me!"
"And he never did." Jadis rolled her eyes.
"But you told me-"
"Never mind what I told you, we have greater things to do. Prince Nicolas, you need to marry him, that way I-we can have the south boarders of Narnia. We can have Telmar." She looked at the map of Narnia hanging on the wall.
Wiping her eyes Johanna spoke, "I can't marry anyone, I am not in the right state of mind!"
Jadis paced around, "you are such a selfish child, you don't understand that this is much bigger than your love life. You will get everything you wanted in the end if you only listen to me-"
Johanna interrupted Jadis, "sometimes I feel like you are using me for your own good."
Jadis turned around, angry, "you ungrateful child, I gave you power and this is how you repay me, accusing me. We have a common goal and enemy; the keeper of light."
"You killed my parents didn't you?" Johanna asked, realizing that it was the witches army that attacked her kingdom.
Slapping her across the face, Jadis spoke quietly, "I did what I had to do to save you from the cage you lived in. In due time, you will have all you wish for."
"You saved me, how, by killing half of my people including my parents!?" Johanna ran her hand across her cheek in a poor attempt to stop the pain. "I thought you were a ghost, how are you physically appearing in front of me?" She felt an itch on her arm, and the more she scratched it, the more she could see her skin starting to glow a little. It was like a disease that glistened instead of being ugly.
"To you I am physical, because you have summoned me, each day, you make me stronger and stronger. One day, I will return. Now, it is time for your destiny, I give you my power, the power of dark magic. Cold magic. You Johanna, are the keeper of darkness." The witch touched her, and a greater darkness started to fill the young woman. A cloud of smoke started to cover her, and she took off her gloves, letting her silver skin show. She looked into the mirror once again and saw that half her face was covered in silver, but she whispered a spell into the mirror to cover her marks.
In the castle, where no one knew what was going on in the dark tower where Johanna was getting her powers against the keeper of light, Edmund sat on a chair in front of a fireplace, reading a book. His brother Peter walked into the room, back from planning the small ball he was throwing for his friend.
Peter noticed how taken Edmund was by the book and snatched it out of his grip, "what is this about?" He asked, looking the book over.
Edmund reached out for it, "give it back!"
"How to please a woman?" Peter read the title and his eyebrows jumped up from their calm state above his eyes.
Edmund's face reddened, "it is not what you think Peter, the book is about courting!"
Peter laughed out loud, "good, for I was about to scold you, brother. Why do you need a book about courting?"
"I don't know what to give Angelina, since it is her birthday," he sighed.
"Well, why don't you give her yourself, I am sure me and Lucy can find a big enough box and wrapping paper," he joked, playing at his brother's narcissism.
Edmund rolled his eyes, "very funny Peter."
Peter put his hand on his brother's shoulder and sat down in a chair beside him. It had been a while since he could relax with his brother in the same room, it seemed like they were always in the same room planning, but never just enjoying each others company like before. Peter liked the fireplace, it reminded him of all the old fireplaces in London, a place he never imagined going back to. He never noticed till that second how much his brother grew up. He was no longer the annoying nine year old who had to always be checked on, he was a twenty year old king, and a good one at that.
"You know, Edmund, I never really have told you how proud I am of you," Peter said, looking down at the stone ground of Cair Paravel.
Edmund looked at his brother, "what do you mean?"
"I mean, we have survived so much, the war in our world, and not counting the many Narnian wars, but you managed to stay sane through all of it. I can't possible imagine not having anyone to lean on." Peter said, shaking his head.
Edmund smiled and patted his brother on the back, "yes, but I had you Peter."
It warmed Peter's heart that after all that happened, Edmund did see him as a helping hand. Peter smiled and turned to his brother for a long hug.
"So, tell me," Peter said, breaking the hug, "what made you fall for this wonderful creature that appeared in our world so mysteriously."
Edmund looked away, a bit shy of telling his big brother what was on his heart, "it was her soul, that absolutely lovely and beautiful soul, the one that strove to help people, despite being confident in herself. She stayed, to help Narnia, even though she owes us nothing."
