Chapter 39. Remember Me When You See Me

"Aslan." Edmund smiled seeing the Lion for the first time in a very long time.

The Lion bowed down extending his paw to the king of justice whom he named himself. To Aslan, Edmund was still the boy who he died for. Nothing had changed about his brown hair and pale features to the mighty Aslan of Narnia.

"My dear Edmund, the boy who knows the price of justice." Aslan smiled.

He guessed why Edmund came, figured that it was because he wanted to remember and only the mighty Lion could lift up a curse thrown at him by the white witch.

"Are you ready to remember Edmund?" The Lion asked, looking at the letter in the boys hand.

Running his eyes through it he looked at the Lion, "I am."

"Very well then, Edmund of Narnia. Remember my child, and never forget." The Lion breathed on him and instantly Edmund felt something lifted off his soul, he felt free again, as if he wasn't trapped by his own head and mind.

Memories made their way into his head like billions of waves crashing on the shores of his mind. He remembered the first time he felt his heart skip for her, the day they danced in the rain. The first time he kissed her, the second time he kissed her, and how he continued kissing her as if it was their last moment together before the war. The battlefield and how she fell onto the grass sending his mind into oblivion and worry for her life. The last memory he had was holding her hand, praying that she's not dead. He remembered everything. He remembered that he was in love with her.

"Angelina," he whispered and opened his eyes. Aslan was gone without even a trace of the Lion ever being there. Still, Edmund knew that it was only because of Him he could remember. His presence lingered for a while near Edmund's soul, and then left the boy to run down the steps of the castle in search of the woman he loved. Sprinting down the long halls of the third floor of the castle, where all the royalties lived, Edmund started remembering every step he took when she was by his side in these very halls. Wondering where she would be at such an hour, Edmund slowed down and made his way to the library, a place where even he would go once he was distressed. He felt horrible for making her feel rejected only a few hours ago.

Like always, he found her in the library, stopping in awe of her sitting on the settee contemplating her life. He could tell that she was unhappy and wanted to do nothing but wrap his arms around her and tell her she was going to be alright. He slowly approached, his eyes running around the room, palms sweaty like he had never seen her before this moment. Putting his hands in his pocket, he let himself be known by standing right in front of her.

She shifted upon seeing him, putting on her best fake smile for him. Not yet knowing that he remembers her, she thought that he wouldn't be concerned with her tears and the need for his presence. She didn't want to leave, she didn't want to marry Nicolas.

"Why are you crying?" Edmund furrowed his eyebrows and sat down next to her, taking his hand out of his pocket and letting it rest on her shoulder.

Angelina couldn't think of a good excuse, "of course, I am forced to marry someone I don't love, and someone I do- well it's a story for another day!"

Smiling to himself he looked at her, "you love someone else?"

She didn't want to cause him any confusion, he was already lost in his own memory, she didn't want to add more chaos to his already chaotic mind, "no, I am happy with what I have."

"You're not happy. You can't be happy. If you truly are, well then that will break my already shattered heart." He averted his eyes from her and turned them to the many shelves of books in front of them. The cold of the air that got inside through the window reached his bones and he wanted her to warm him.

"You don't want me to be happy?" She raised her eyebrow a bit confused by his muffled talk. The least he can do is wish her happiness, since he doesn't remember her.

Edmund sighed. He got down on his knees in front of her, cupping the side of her face with his cold hand. She could feel his thumb wipe off the salty tear from her cheek. His eyes filled with as much worry and question as hers. They frantically ran back and forth around her face, trying to uncover the mysteries of her corners.

"You know you're wrong about me. A lot of people are. I'm not some great example, I'm a child with a sword playing king when he doesn't even know the extent of his own heart." He couldn't look her in the eyes, anywhere but her eyes.

Angelina shook her head, "I don't understand. What does this have to do with anything?"

"It has to do everything with me. I am a horrible choice. You might even call me a mistake later on, but you are not supposed to be with him. You are not supposed to be marrying him. Thinking of him. He doesn't love you. I do. You are not his, never his. Because I can't stand the thought of you being anyone's but mine." His voice almost cracked in the end of his sentence, as his lips formed into a strange frown, or was it a smile that he was trying to show her? He didn't know anymore, all he knew was that they were frozen in a moment.

"And when you kissed me-" He spoke, afraid that she would not and the moment would be ruined by awkward silence.

"You love me?" She was confused, but it was a good kind of confusion.

"I do-" he smiled down at the ground, "I remember everything. I remember you, my dear Angelina." His hands fell to her shoulders, their foreheads connecting.

In the moment actual fear of losing her chilled him to the bone, he didn't know what to do about it because she was about to leave him on his own. In a sense, Edmund didn't even know what he was without her.

"Do you really remember?" She didn't let a smile cover her face just yet, fearing that it all might be a dream, even a tiny breath cruelly waking her up.

Edmund smiled, "yes I do. My keeper of light, lady of my heart. I knew the second you kissed me on that beach that everything was going to change-"

"Please don't tell me that the Sleeping Beauty effect actually work?" She laughed.

He laughed too, "actually Aslan showed up later and restored my memory."

"Okay that's better," she smiled.

When she finished her sentence she knew, knew that he was back. Everything was going to be alright, and she was sure of it now. Without saying a word she wrapped her arms around his neck, not wanting to ever let him go. He breathed in the familiar smell of her hair and knew that he was finally where he had to be.

"Come with me," Edmund took her by the hand and lead her out of the library, both of them not taking their eyes off each other as they walked into the throne room hand in hand. He was leading her and heads turned, wondering what was going on. A smile covered some peoples faces, others gave them furrowed eyebrows. Nicolas crossed his arms on his chest and waited for an explanation. Johanna nervously breathed in and out. Lucy Pevensie smiled, and so did her sister Susan.

Upon noticing them, Peter was hoping that something changed in Edmund's memory and he could finally be happy. A smile covered his face as his brother walked up with Angelina's hand in his and bowed down to him.

Peter nodded, motioning Edmund to explain himself in front of all the people and especially Nicolas. His demeanor was clam, but Peter could tell that the Telmarine prince was worried.

Looking up at his brother with child-like eyes Edmund spoke, "I love her Peter. I'm begging you, spare us. You can't let her marry someone else."

The warmth on the high king's heart increased and he smiled at his brother. "I knew you did. It took you long enough to remember. From the beginning, you were hers and she was yours. The wedding is cancelled, you are spared."

A genuine smile filled both their faces as they turned to each other. Nicolas quickly started protesting, but Peter wouldn't listen. Johanna angrily stormed out of the room. Caspian took Susan by the hand, happy that her brother remembered and Lucy smiled at how innocent her brother looked.

Grabbing his brother by the shoulders, Peter pulled him into a hug. "Welcome back, little brother!" He pulled away and looked at him.

"Thanks Pete," Edmund smiled.

Susan and Lucy quickly surrounded him as well and he got lost in the crowd of people congratulating him. He lost sight of Angelina who smiled at how happy the Narnians were for Edmund who regained his memory. They all cheered and one of the centaurs picked him up, everyone wanting to shake his hand and touch the king. Edmund smiled widely, he was not new to being treated like a hero, but at the moment he did not love the attention. The Narnians threw rice into the air as a sign of good fortune and Angelina walked out of the throne room, smiling at how happy they all were. She slowly made her way down the hall, looking at the big marble columns.

Opening the big throne room doors and escaping the crowd that cheered for him, Edmund caught up with her, grabbing her by the hand.

"Leaving so soon?" He tried to catch his breath from the running. "I never thought I'd have to run away from my own people just to catch a glimpse of you." He laughed out, pushing her towards the wall. Edmund connected their foreheads and cupped her face.

"They are happy for you, they have their king back. A king who remembers." She smiled at him, wishing that they were not in the middle of the castle hall where guards lurked around.

"Are you not happy?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows. Something he started doing regularly.

Angelina sighed, "I am happy, your majesty."

"Good. Because I forgot something." He looked at her with innocent eyes.

Her worried look made him smirk, "what did you forget?"

"I forgot that I haven't kissed you in a very long time." With a wide smile he applied his lips to hers, connecting them for a while and closing his eyes. Finally, everything was back to normal for him. There was nothing he had to remember, the unpleasant thoughts of Johanna left his brain and he was free.

"Everything is going to be alright." Edmund let go and pulled her towards him as he started walking away from the throne room with her by his side.

Johanna stumbled into the dark tower of Cair Paravel, pulling herself towards the huge mirror in the center of the room. "I want to be her! I want him!" She screamed, even she was terrified of her own voice filled with anger. Her innocence which she once possessed disappeared with her thirst for power. She looked into the mirror, noticing silver marks growing on her hands.

"What is this?" Johanna turned to the reflection of Jadis in the mirror.

"The anger is taking over you, dark magic is taking over you." The white witch explained.

Johanna tried to wipe the silver off her arms, but it didn't work. "Did this happen to you too? Did you turn into who you are now because of dark magic."

Jadis walked up closer to her, grabbing Johanna by the chin and turning her towards the mirror, "child of Eve, I was always this way. Can't you see, I am dark magic."
