Chapter 23. Nightmares

"Land Ho!"

Caspian heard one of his crew members scream from the distance. Picking up his telescope he quickly looked into the direction the sailor was looking. His eyes did not deceive him, there was in fact land ahead of them. Swiftly, the Telmarin king called his king and best friend, Edmund, to see the land for himself.

"I didn't expect us to be here so fast, Ed," Caspian confessed passing the telescope to Edmund.

The young king looked through the device, a smile growing on his face. "Well, now we can finally help the army."

Susan and Angelina joined them as they both looked out into the distance. Susan Pevensie was a bit worried, she didn't like how fast everything was moving. Angelina leaned out to look at the waters that seemed to be screaming for them to turn back around. She too did not feel comfortable with land being this close.

"We will arrive there in no time, perhaps even early tomorrow morning." Caspian was excited.

Edmund turned his gaze to his sister and then Angelina, both seemed to be bothered with something. "What's wrong?" He whispered to Angelina.

"It's just all weird, a battle awaits us right there just a few hours away." She was still getting used to the feeling of worry in her gut.

He tried to comfort her, "it's going to be okay."

His simplicity did not give her comfort, she wanted results and she wanted them as fast as possible. Angelina started thinking about home again, memories of her mother surfaced. "You can't say everything will be fine when you might die." She naturally intertwined her fingers with his, feeling the warms of his hands.

"I am the best swordsman in Narnia, I highly doubt that." Edmund tried to hide his fear and mask it with confidence. The truth was, he too feared for his life. The powers of the white witch were strong, even when she was dead. There was also something else he knew, something that was prophesied by the great book of Narnia.

"Alright, let's all eat some supper and discuss our further plans." Susan was the one distracting everyone from the land they wanted to see through the telescope.

"Splendid idea!" Caspian agreed and grabbed Angelina by the arm, "would you allow me to escort you to the dining area?"

Edmund raised his eyebrows and rolled his eyes, "I guess I'll have to accompany my sister then."

"Sorry, Ed," Caspian teased.

Angelina smiled at Edmund and then turned to Caspian, "it would be a pleasure."

Susan shook her head and took her brother by the arm as he watched Caspian depart with Angelina on his arm. Guessing exactly that her brother was a bit jealous, Susan smirked to herself. Her little brother Edmund, liking a girl, this was something not completely new, but good to witness. She had hoped that he moved on from his life in London and how his heart broke for the first time.

"So tell me, brother, how are you going to woo her now if Caspian is already making his evil plans?" Susan joked, knowing that Caspian's behavior was completely innocent.

Edmund laughed, "what makes you think I want to woo her?"

"Because I see the way you look at her. Dare I say you look at her more lovingly than you looked at Isabella." Susan decided to address what she was witnessing, knowing her brother's poor luck in love. Edmund frowned and he looked thoughtfully at her.

"Did you have to remind me of her?" Edmund asked, annoyed with his sister's attempt to talk about his past.

Susan breathed out, "you can't keep the past hidden Edmund. What exactly happened between you two? I thought you both liked each other?"

"We did-or at least I did." Edmund looked down at the ground.

"And she?" Susan kept asking.

With laughter escaping his lips Edmund turned his face towards his sister, "she thought I was insane."

"Well, for this one, I don't think she will think you insane. To be completely honest with you, she thinks nothing but good things of you. Goodness, that girl even wrote you a letter. You should talk to her." Susan decided to help her brother who she thought was clueless.

Edmund lifted his head up again, "she wrote me a letter? how often does she uh-talk about me?"

She could already see the smile creeping onto his face, "quite often actually, as often as you talk about her."

He sighed, knowing his sister caught on quite quickly. Yes, Edmund did talk about her a lot, but out of the goodness and love in his heart.

They approached the dining room and took their seats. The cooks brought in the food and Caspian thanked all of them. He began yet another conversation with Susan about the battlefront. For this conversation, as much as he tried to, Edmund couldn't avoid either.

Angelina was horribly bored with the conversation, her mind again started wondering about home and how she missed her mother. Life in London didn't seem so fun to her at first, but now she missed it terribly. Facing a dilemma of wanting to go back home and wanting to be with Edmund, Angelina finished her food and sighed as she listened to the two Pevensies and Caspian talk business. Sometimes Edmund could be so serious that she would not recognize the young bright-eyed king she knew before. He was no longer making jokes, he was talking about war.

Caspian stood up and led them to the map room, Angelina was forced to follow out of boredom. He took out a map from a drawer and started showing the king and queen some army positions he was notified about.

"We could trick the witches army into following us to sea, then maybe they will get eaten by sea serpents!" Caspian tried to offer one of his genius plans.

Angelina turned to the party with wide eyes upon hearing what he just said, she couldn't imagine that peaceful seas like these possessed horrible creatures like sea serpents.

"Sea serpents?" Edmund asked, smiling and raising his eyebrows, not really believing Caspian.

"Oh yes, they are very frightening creatures!" Caspian lowered his tone as everyone looked at him. It was as if he was preparing himself to tell a horror story near a campfire. Imagining him doing that made Angelina laugh. The three of them were staring at her as she cleared her throat and decided not to try to explain to them what a campfire was.

She returned to exploring the map room as the others continued discussing their next moves. The battlefront was near and Angelina feared that someone will die. She was not ready to witness her friends die. Being born in a century of comfort, she couldn't imagine losing someone close to her. Life finally caught up on what she was missing out on and decided to give her the official death tour. Hating the fact that Narnia was even involved in a war, she tried to get her mind off of what was going on.

"We should all prepare for the battle tomorrow. We might die because of the witch's dark magic." Caspian put his hand on Edmund's shoulder.

"Or get eaten by a sea serpent." Edmund tried to joke even though his own heart was overtaken by fear.

"I think it's been enough of staying up late for you little brother, as well as the rest of us. I bid you all goodnight." Susan bowed down in front of the two kings and took Angelina by the hand. They both departed.

"Goodnight," Edmund smiled at Angelina.

Caspian shook his head and smirked, "since when did the almighty king become a man in love?"

"What are you talking about?" Edmund turned away from him praying that the darkness of the room covered his blush.

"I'm talking about you and the way you look at our new friend Angelina. You do know that she has a mission and Peter forbade you from distracting her right?" Caspian was more relaxed than Peter when it came to any matters.

"I am not distracting her! Why does everyone seem to think that?" Edmund defended himself.

"Quite down Ed, it's fine. It's a good thing she's distracted, which means she pays attention to you. Look, I believe that Aslan's timing is always right, if he believed that you were bad for her, well he would already get rid of you a long time ago." Caspian reassured his friend.

Edmund nodded and followed the Telmarin king to their room. Caspian was afraid too, he feared that he might not breathe after tomorrow. The battle had to begin at some point and end at another. He feared that it would also mark his end. Of course like he said, he believed in Aslan's timing.

Soon enough, Caspian closed his eyes and drifted off to a long sleep. However, Edmund couldn't sleep. He kept thinking about the white witch and how she tricked him once. His fear was that he wouldn't be strong enough to defeat her once again. Of course, every time he was faced with her he was able to, but this time he feared he was too weak.

"You are right to be afraid," blueish gray smoke appeared out of nowhere sending shivers through his body.

Edmund drew his sword from the ground and pointed at the ghostly image of the woman he wished to never have met.

"Get out of my head!" Edmund screamed.

"Dear poor son of Adam, your heart is completely redeemed yet you still fear me." He could hear her evil laugh.

"Do you want to know why?" She smiled.

"No!" Edmund protested.

"Because you are afraid of what you are capable of doing. Once a traitor always a traitor. Your past haunts you Edmund Pevensie." With silence she appeared and a sword through her chest she disappeared, Edmund's sword.

He didn't want to think about her words, anger took his heart and Edmund fell face down on his pillow. Looking over to Caspian he noticed that the king was still sleeping. If only there was a way to erase the white witch completely from his mind, he would do it in a heartbeat.

Instead of trying to go back to sleep, Edmund felt an uneasy sense of wickedness inside of him, he had to be around something that was good. Wondering if Angelina was still up, he put on his boots and marched out of his room. Her room was only a few doors away, and he knocked on it knowing that she might be already asleep. To his luck, the door cracked open and her face peeked out, greeting him.

"Edmund?" She asked, not at all surprised to see him.

Smiling, he wasn't sure how to explain his strange visit, "may I come in?"

Thinking for a second, she let the door open wide enough for him to slip in. Edmund sat down on a chair that was at her desk, and he tried his hardest to not think of the covetous thoughts the witch sent his way. Although it wasn't too bad to desire someone, he knew that him desiring her as an object diminishes her value as a woman that he is falling in love with. Sitting down beside him, Angelina pulled up another chair.

Just being in her presence was already good enough and stopped him from thinking about the evil white witch. He watched her lips curl into a smile and wished he could dive into them.

Edmund cleared his throat, clearing his thoughts with it, "Susan tells me you wrote me letters?"

She blushed, looking away. Of course, how could his sister not tell him about that, but she didn't know whether it was the right time to show the letters to him. Instinctively, Angelina reached into a drawer in the desk and pulled out a piece of paper giving it to him. Edmund took it out of her hands, mindful of how shy she seemed. He undid the paper and read the first two lines, smiling down at her as he did so, my dearest Edmund, I am not sure how to start.

Edmund read attentively, he reread each line after he read it the first time to never forget what she was writing to him about. When he got to the part of her professing her love for him, his heart raced and his own butterflies started to flutter their wings in his stomach. What delightful words she used, he almost wished that he could write her a letter as a response, which he promised himself he would do eventually. He read the last line, I think I am falling in love with you, and put the letter on the table, taking her hands into his.

"You're gonna laugh at me, aren't you. It was too cheesy?" She asked, her lips forming an uncomfortable smile.

Edmund furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, "why would I ever laugh at such a beautiful thing like that? Is that what 21st century boys do? Well, I assure you, I am a man and I shall never laugh at you for those sweet words." He cupped her face with one hand, "that was the single most extraordinary thing that has ever happened to me. I only wish that I could write something half as better next time."

She chuckled, "there will be a next time? And you don't have to write me anything."

"There will be a next time and a time after that, and after that. I will pamper you with letters and sweet words, whisper them in your ear, or write them down on paper. You need to be told, shown, that you are loved and that you are very important." He rubbed the top of her hand with his thumb, gently, in a soothing manner. Closing her eyes, she applied a kiss to the inside of his palm that he still kept applied to her face.

Fearing that they might have rushed some things, he pulled his hand away and looked down at the ground. There was so much light and life in her, he filled himself with the goodness exhuming from her for the whole night. When she said goodnight and walked him to the door, he wished he could stay with her a bit longer. But sleep called both of them, besides there was a battle to fight in the morning.

"Would you mind terribly if I hang onto this letter as well? It is addressed to me after all," he asked.

Angelina smiled, "knock yourself out, in other words, yes."

Edmund didn't tell her about the vision he had, he didn't want to. He went back to his room smiling because of how lucky he happened to be.
