Chapter 20. Back On The Ship

It didn't take long for Edmund and Angelina to run into the middle of the forest, looking back once in a while just to see if any guards were following them. To their big surprise, dead silence filled their surroundings only to be disturbed by their hastened breaths as they tried to slow down.

The woods were the darkest place she had ever been in. Of course, it was always dark in the library she used to sneak into in London. Suddenly, Angelina started missing London, her mom, her life. She knew that she was destined for adventure, but a completely different world was not what she expected. Her thoughts were scattered all over the place, thinking about how she wanted to go back home only a few weeks ago and now she was saving the king who rescued her. She wasn't able to catch her breath and leaned against a tree, he did the same, joining her. Noticing the excitement in his eyes, she wanted to hug him for she was finally reunited with her best friend.

"Angelina, are you alright?" His concerned voice sounded as he put his hand on her shoulder, trying to comfort her.

Not expecting his touch her body naturally shivered, "I'm fine." Now looking up at him, she replied.

"Nonsense, you are shivering." Edmund's hand managed to pull her into a hug.

Out of the dead silence of the woods and their breathing, a small growl was heard. Angelina quickly turned her head to the noise, Edmund following her lead soon after. He realized that all he had was his bare hands and that was not enough to protect her. At that moment she was the only one he was concerned with, forgetting that he was also in danger. The Narnian wilderness was strange, but the only wolf he had ever met was one that talked to him, these wolves, however, came from the real world, their masters abandoning them in the woods whenever they didn't need them. These wolves could not be reasoned with.

"Stay close to me." He pulled her in closer, holding her hand tighter.

A pair of yellow eyes emerged from the bushes of the dark woods, followed by what seemed like millions of the same glowing eyes. There was no mistake, these were wolves, and not just any wolves, but wild Narnian wolves rumored to tear a person's heart out in one bite. Who was Edmund to be frightened by them, he was a king and the option for fear was not on his list. However, even Edmund gulped with fear as he stared into the sharp teeth of the animal which was about to attack him at any second.

As the wolf growled and prepared to charge at them, Angelina closed her eyes and prayed for a miracle. She opened them only to be met with a green glow coming from the corners of the trees. Being sure that it was a combination of fear and adrenaline, she didn't even bother to look down as her hand was no longer holding onto Edmund's. Her hand was glowing with a light brighter than the stars. Aslan's light. Without putting much thought into it, she directed her hands towards the hungry wolf. The animal quickly backed away from the king he was about to attack. The green fog also departing from them, as if it were scared of her.

Without Conscience whispering encouraging words into her ear, she would not have enough strength or bravery to even try and defeat the wolves.

Edmund only now noticed that it was Angelina the pack was backing away from as she walked up closer and closer to them. Soon enough the wolves scattered and ran away. The light started to dim as it was almost completely gone, and she turned her face to him, nose bleeding. It took all her strength, using it the first time. It drained her because she didn't know the limits of the power inside of her.

Almost falling onto the cold ground of the woods, Angelina was instantly caught by two strong arms which refused to let her head touch the leafy floor. Instead of the moon to which she looked, Angelina could see his worried eyes, fingers running through her hair.

"You're gonna be alright, love," was the last thing she heard before blacking out completely in his arms. Angelina wasn't sure if it was conscience or Edmund who said it, but it didn't matter at this point.

Whatever happened after that she couldn't remember, but she remembered his concerned expression before she blacked out. Although her eyes were closed, her mind was thinking about whatever surrounded her. She felt a soft surface around her, unlike the rough ground of the woods. Wherever she was, the room was spinning, or at least in some sort of motion as if rocking back and forth on waves. The sensation reminded her a lot of the train rides she took when she was a child back in her own world. She heard rain in the distance, hitting the glass of a window. Wiggling around in the spot where she lay, she furrowed her eyebrows and grabbed her head, which still hurt from all the action she had.

She was woken up by Susan who had entered the room. Angelina groaned as she opened her eyes and noticed the unfamiliar room she was in.

"You have to lie down!" Susan jumped to her side, stopping Angelina from getting up.

"What happened?" Angelina asked Susan.

Shaking her head the Pevensie girl answered, "I don't know when Caspian and I joined you and Edmund you were on the ground and he was trying to wake you up."

For a second, Angelina was confused, then she remembered, "I-I had this light in my hands." She couldn't believe her own words. She knew that sparks could come out of her hands, but nothing close to a big bright light shining from her flesh. She had so many questions, like how did the light not burn her?

"You need rest," Susan blew on the candle that was on the bedside table next to Angelina and the light disappeared. The only source of light was the lanterns hanging at the window. When Angelina looked outside the window her eyes were met with waves that were calmly flowing around. The Pevensie girl left her room, wishing Angelina a peaceful rest.

Angelina couldn't rest. Her mind was running again, she couldn't sleep and the constant sensation of being thrown from wave to wave made her feel sick. She realized that much that she was on a ship, probably the one she and Susan saw in the harbor if only she could remember what it was called. Curiosity got the best of her and she stood up, grabbing the lantern that was on her bedside table. Angelina was still dressed in her jeans and t-shirt, thankful that her rescuers didn't see it necessary to undress her. Cracking the door open a little bit, she peeked into the moving hallway and walked out when she saw that no one was there.

The halls were wooden, all representing the proud colors of Narnia. Each step made her wonder even more about this ship and its maker. The designer put so much detail and dedication, she wondered if they knew what the ship's purpose was going to be. Finally, a cold breeze hit her and Angelina knew she was close to being outside. Hurrying her pace she found herself on the deck. Grabbing the rails of the huge ship, she looked out into the calm waters.

No soul alive or dead was on the deck that night, leaving Angelina in silence to ponder on the greatest thing of life. Her thoughts were no longer scattered, they seemed collected into one tiny drop like the waters. The sickness that she once felt in her body was long gone. The never stopping motion of the ship didn't help though, she could feel her stomach's discomfort coming back again.

As she continued thinking of her purpose and Aslan, she heard footsteps and someone softly clearing his throat. Turning around she saw Caspian standing in the middle of the doorway leading to the wooden hall. He leaned on the side of the doorway and raised his eyebrows, surprised that she was up and about.

"Couldn't sleep?" He asked, joining her.

Angelina turned back to the sea that crashed into the ship with its waves and tried to ignore his presence. Not knowing Caspian too well, she was cautious around him. But there was something inviting about him, something exhuming safety and care, even when he didn't know her too well himself.

"No." She spoke as quietly as possible. In a strange moment, as if something horrible took over her, all her insecurities surfaced. She was standing in the presence of one of the kings after all. The ship was rocking back and forth, flying on the surface of the never calming waters.

Caspian laughed, "I saw what happened to you in the woods with Edmund, and Susan told me about who you are. I can see why Ed hid it from us, he was trying to protect you from everyone."

"I am grateful to all of you for saving me, but I don't think I need protection. Besides, I was safer in the castle with Peter," she said, looking out into the distance where no surface was spotted by now.

"You're welcome. I think you would have been in even more danger back in the castle with Peter. He doesn't understand your destiny, he's too ambitious-"

Angelina cut Caspian off, "why does everyone doubt Peter so much, he is the high king after all!"

Caspian didn't know how to answer, "we don't doubt Peter, he's just known for doing things on impulse, he sent Edmund off to war-"

"Yes, and he agreed to go. Besides, he's a king who loves war right? He wouldn't have been happy spending all his time in the gardens with me." She didn't let him finish.

"On the contrary," Caspian looked at her stubbornness sternly, "I think he would have much rather preferred being around you. And yes, Edmund does love to fight more than anything." He didn't bother to wait for her reply and walked off back to his cabin. Angelina wished he would never have started talking to her, she didn't understand the resentment she harbored towards him when she didn't even know him.

Waiting a couple of minutes, she herself decided to leave the deck and make her way back to her room. Then she realized that she didn't remember which room was hers. Sneaking around the hall she tried to retrace her steps and guess which room was hers. Figuring that she found the right one, she twisted the door handle, but to her surprise, the door opened without her pushing it and she slammed into someone's body as they were coming out of the room. Her nose hit their chest, and she pulled away, rubbing her head.

Edmund chuckled at her, of course, it was him out of all the people she would bump into. His smirk slowly turned into a frown as he looked at her concerned. When her eyes met him, he doubtfully pulled her into a hug, happy to see her alive and well, but not sure what her reaction would be. Getting used to his arms around her, she slowly wrapped her own around his torso. He must have thought her to be a freak since he saw her glow in the woods.

He looked at her, his eyes scanning every corner. There was something perfect in her imperfections. His mind wondered why she would be given the great light of Aslan, inside he knew that the answer was not in her appearance, it was her mind that was strong enough to handle whatever came at her. This regular sized teenage girl, who didn't really stand out much, was going to save his world. She was his best friend, and Edmund found himself perplexed in wondering why she became so important to him.

"What a surprise bumping into you here," Edmund smiled.

A little bit nervous, she blurted out, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world."

He looked at her with a smile and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion at the same time, "pardon, is that something I am supposed to understand?"

"Sorry, Casablanca, I guess you haven't seen the movie," she looked down.

"How are you?" He asked hastily.

She smiled and felt compelled to lie, "never been better," she was scared that his opinion changed on her. She was now more important and he saw it with his own eyes how important she was. He would surely put his duties before her and protect her as a job and not out of friendship or dare she think love.

He grinned, noticing the uneasiness in her demeanor and wondering what caused such a shift in behavior, "I am glad to hear that."

"Well, goodnight your majesty." Angelina bowed down and made her way back to the hall slowly. She didn't want him to say anything to stop her, but at the same time, she desperately wanted his hand to grab hers, to pull her back and ask her if she was truly alright, for she wasn't. Everything she heard about became real, she was the keeper of light and no longer just a guest from another world.

"Goodnight," she heard him say after her and the door closed behind him.

Although dumbfounded by her strange behavior, he couldn't help but thank his lucky stars that somehow they were reunited. He would have to show her that he cared as much as possible, there was no wasting time anymore.

Edmund slowly walked back to his bed, not sure why he wanted to leave in the first place, still replaying a few moments ago in his head. His mind started imagining better scenarios where he, even with all his majesty, would be courageous enough to finally claim her as his own. She was more than just Aslan's soldier to him, she became so much more. He knew that there was no more denying it, he started to slowly fall for her as he hoped that those feelings flowed both ways as he lied down on his hammock.

In her mind, she feared that all he saw in her was a warrior of Aslan whom he had to devote his body to for protection, but not his heart for love.

"you know that's not true," she heard and didn't even bother to look at the old man who stood beside her. Who was she to listen to her Conscience?
