Chapter 15. Writing Is A Gift
She always had the talent of putting pretty words on paper, the only person in her class who enjoyed writing poetry. Angelina never thought of that skill as a gift, she only knew that rhyming came easy to her, and putting a confession on a piece of paper was easier than telling face to face.
Waking up and thinking about how much her life has changed, Angelina took out a piece of paper and started writing. At first, the ink dripped from the feather onto the blank piece of paper, she didn't know where to start or what to start with, yet her paper was already ruined. The words came to her with the wind that blew through her window: Dear, Edmund. She started and heard the Lion calling her back to the place where she would train.
After those two words, the rest flowed from her naturally. She told him everything, informing of every single detail. Not missing to write about the fact that she missed him, she put the words down on paper and prepared to close the envelope.
Today her first training with Aslan began, she marked the day on her wall and ran from the castle into the woods. Before going to Aslan's, she ran into the stables where the strong horse Philip was left without a king to ride him. She didn't see him before, he was probably being cleaned the day before. The horse stood in his place, staring out into the window, lonely from the uneventful days he was living.
"Good evening." Angelina greeted the horse politely, knowing that it talks.
The steed stopped chewing and turned his brown head towards the girl, "miss Angelina, how may I be of service."
"I was wondering if you would like to go out for a ride today?" She asked, hoping that the horse would agree since it was the best battle horse in the entire kingdom of Narnia, he was bored staying locked up in the lonely stables.
The horse's hooves clicked on the ground as he neared Angelina, "I would be honored to, it has been a while since I was out."
"I can't promise that it will be safe, I am going into the deep woods," she warned him.
"That's even better, it's been a while since I've had some action!" The horse shook his head in happiness, "hop on."
The moment she was on the horses back, it galloped out of the stables and through the huge castle doors on its way to the woods. The air felt fresh on her face and she couldn't help but smile from the increased speed.
In no time was Philip at Aslan's cave, and both of them could already see the Lion walking out with a bright light behind him. Aslan had a smile on his face, the kind a Lion could actually have. When Angelina got down from Philip, the horse instantly bowed to the One King Of Narnia.
"Your Majesty." He spoke as his neck was lowered and his knees were slowly making their way to the ground.
Angelina did the same, following everything the horse did. Aslan walked up to them and spoke, "rise brave warriors of Narnia."
The fact that Aslan called her a warrior scared her, she didn't yet know how to fight and defeat the evil everyone was talking about. The doubt that she could actually do it was stronger than her faith in her own and Aslan's strength. It was growing deeply around her heart, killing her confidence.
"Do not fear child, all will come in due time." As if reading her heart, Aslan reassured her.
The rest of the day was spent training, and Angelina couldn't wait to fight with a real troll instead of the fake stuffed ones that Aslan trained her with. Philip was there by her side, giving her a ride whenever she needed to train with a horse. It reminded him a lot of the training he watched Edmund have. Edmund was a natural swordsman. He saw the same power and spark he saw in Edmund once.
She wrote every day, everything that happened to her was put on paper. She never sent him any of the letters, just kept them to herself. Perhaps she would show them to him one day when she was brave enough to do so. Angelina was writing so fast that she didn't even have time to check it twice for any mistakes. Ending every letter in, I wish you the best, she stashed it into a box. The box that kept many secrets of her heart.
Running down the stairs to another one of her training sessions, she didn't forget to stop by Philip's stables and inform him that she was ready to go. The horse would always turn around, make a happy sound, and let the girl saddle him. Together they were out on great adventures, defeating small and big dolls that Alsan sat up for her to train with. It made both Philip and Angelina feel alive. Him doing something he had always loved, and her training the abilities that were always deep inside of her.
Watching as she rode the horse which galloped around, Aslan smiled, "You are almost done with your training."
Angelina got off the horse, "am I doing well, your majesty?"
"Very well young one. Now for the real task, you will have to face the trolls." Aslan made his way to his cave and Angelina followed, signaling Philip to wait outside. The horse helped himself to some leaves that grew on a nearby bush.
When Aslan walked in, Angelina felt the presence of someone powerful, as if she was in a holy place. He made his way to a book which was standing on top of a stool, opening it Aslan scrolled to the middle page. She recognized the book, it was the book of Narnia, and the page was her story.
"Come closer, child," Aslan called her.
Angelina walked up to the book and looked at the page where she was standing without any sword, facing a troll. She didn't understand what this meant, how is it possible to defeat someone without a weapon. Looking at the Lion for guidance, Angelina furrowed her eyebrows.
"You don't understand, but you will soon. To defeat the darkness you should use your mind and the light. Remember that your power comes from me, you are guarded by my name." Aslan closed His eyes and bowed his head as if agreeing with Himself, reminding Himself of the great battles that are to come.
"Your light? What does this mean?" Angelina was still confused.
Aslan didn't say anything, he just opened his eyes and his mouth. Warm breath escaped the Lion's lungs as it filled the entire cave lighting every dark corner. Something filled Angelina, some unearthly power which the great Lion possessed. Something that was there deep inside of her turned on. She felt strong, stronger than she was before.
"Now you have my light," Aslan said calmly.
"What do I do with it?" Still confused, Angelina asked.
"You will defeat enemies with this. Search deep within your mind to find the strength to use the light. Your first test will be the trolls, go child." Aslan smiled and made his way out of the cave. Angelina followed and without any words saddled the horse and instructed him to go.
"Good luck, Angelina." Aslan spoke, he turned around quietly as the girl rode away and whispered, "queen Angelina of old." On the golden wall where the portrait of Edmund was, the color started to fill the picture. Edmund was looking onto the wall in front of him, and on the wall in front of him was a portrait of Angelina, a great light flowing from her hands like streams of pure water. Her eyes were staring into his.
It was not a hard task finding the trolls, their stench led Philip right towards them. They were sitting in a circle discussing their next meal strategy.
Angelina got off the horse and her heart skipped beats. She didn't know how to get their attention, so Philip did it for her, making a loud noise. The trolls instantly turned around and gazed at the young woman who was standing a few inches away from them, not too close yet not too far. One of the trolls stood up and walked to her, "so, the girl returned." He laughed out as the rest joined his side.
"I have come to defeat you!" Angelina tried to sound confident.
"You!" The troll pointed his greasy finger at her and started laughing. The other trolls joined him again and another walked up closer to her, "you and what army?" He asked, pointing at Philip. In anger, she lifted her hand, a small spark escaping from her fingers.
"Aslan's light!" The trolls suddenly stopped laughing.
After Angelina tried to extract the light from her hands like she was supposed to do, it didn't work. The trolls joined in their laughter again, one even wiped a tear from his eyes.
"Alright girl, enough." The other tried to grab her to put her in their pot of hot stew. Out of nowhere, the light from her hands shined as she ran up to the troll and touched him. The ugly thing quickly turned into glass and the other watched in amazement. One of the trolls bowed down to her, indicating that he was giving up. The light came out of her with her confidence and how she remembered that her power comes from someone else, she was His instrument. Her victory was His.
"Now, are you going to defend the castle woods, or destroy them with your tyranny?" She asked the rest of the trolls.
The others quickly tried to grab her, but she pointed the light at them, turning them into glass instantly. "You wanna fight me too?" She asked the remaining troll who was on the ground bowing.
"No your majesty!" He screamed out in fear.
"Majesty?" She asked, still holding the light near him so he wouldn't try any tricks.
"You are the prophecy! I will serve the castle woods, I will not destroy them anymore." The troll looked scared like she had power over him.
"Good. If I hear that you are up to no good-" She pointed the light at him.
"You won't your majesty! In the name of Aslan, you won't!" The troll screamed out.
Leaving him Angelina got back onto Philip and instructed him to go back to Aslan's cave. The troll watched her in amazement as she left, and then looked at his friends, sighing. The mud off his skin started to slowly drip down and he looked into the pot of boiling soup to reveal his perfectly clean tan face. The troll was no longer disgusting and smelly, he was just a giant that got deep into the power of evil, which dirtied him on the inside as well as outside. The giants of Narnia were cursed by the witch, to do her will. But he was freed by the light from Aslan, through His keeper.
The great Lion was gone, and so was the cave, and the book. The woods seemed more empty without the cave and the Lion. She wondered where He could have gone at such a desperate hour. The only thing that was left on the plain grasses where the cave used to stand was a piece of paper that read. "You are ready, now you must save Narnia." She did not feel ready, but she had defeated the trolls that she had to, perhaps her training was truly over. Now, a much more important task stood in front of her. Focusing on what she had to do next, Angelina didn't notice how someone was sitting on a rock behind her. The person cleared his throat and she jumped, raising her hand in defense.
"Wow!" The man spoke, putting his own hands up in defense. He was old and rigid, wearing a suit that could classify like a suite from any time period.
Angelina looked at Philip who was just as confused and neighing, "who are you!?"
"I believe," the man slowly lifted his hands away from his face to reveal himself, "I am your conscience, the last parting gift from Aslan, to ensure that you make the right decisions."
Raising her eyebrows she put her hand down, "why would my conscience be a rigid old man?"
"I beg your pardon!" Conscience protested, "I am only 54, and you're the one who had me as your conscience, daddy issues I believe?" He proceeded to sit back down on the rock and took a sip out of his small teacup which he had in hand.
"Hey," she snapped at him, "don't push your luck."
He nodded his head, "so then, what's next?"
"Oh yes, I am supposed to remind you that I am only seen by you and other intelligent animals around you, so if you think of talking out loud to me don't, you will seem crazy to everyone else," he said.
"Good to know," she nodded, "I guess now we go back to Cair Paravel and figure out how to save Narnia?"
She wrote it down in another letter, her experience with the troll and Aslan, retelling Edmund in detail how everything happened. She mentioned stealing his horse and how much fun she had with him. Putting this new letter into the wooden box, she wondered how Edmund would read them if there was no way of her sending the letters to him. What if he would never get to read them? Consciously forgetting to mention that she now had an old man stuck in her head whom only she could see, Angelina sealed off the letter in an envelope and gave it to the man who was supposed to deliver them.
