Chapter 14. Aslan, The Lion
Out of nowhere, the roar came again. Turning away from the trolls, Angelina looked at a cliff that was in front of her. Behold, a lion stood there with the sky as bright as morning behind him. The lion roared again and the trolls scattered, afraid for their own lives. They pointed at him in terror and the troll who was holding her, dropped Angelina to the ground. She humphed as she looked back up at the Lion, she couldn't take her eyes away.
There was one in a million chances that this lion in the wild was actually the great king Aslan of Narnia. Angelina herself feared being faced with the lion. He jumped off the cliff and walked up closer to her. His pace was slow and didn't exhume any danger. She looked into his eyes filled with kindness and compassion, she realized that this lion had no intention of hurting her. Something so majestic, and intimidating, Aslan was a mystery to her. His mane flowed down the sides with the motion he walked in. His paws fell soft to the ground and grass grew on every naked piece of land he stepped on, the land destroyed by evil. Aslan was the creator of Narnia, and it bent to his will.
"Why have you come, my child?" The lion asked with a voice of a thousand whispers as if He was speaking in her head. She heard the wind again the second He spoke.
"I came here for you!" Angelina found the strength in her voice to speak.
The lion walked around in circles and then said, "I know for whom you have come, now tell me why?"
"I think you already know if you are Aslan the Great. I came here in search of my destiny." Angelina bowed down in front of him.
"I am what I am. Arise, child," He stretched his paw and put it on her shoulder, breathing on her as she stood up. "So, you are the warrior? The one who will keep the light in her. I was expecting you." Aslan smiled and started slowly walking deeper into the woods. "You have grown much since the last day I saw you."
"But the trolls? And you knew me before?" Angelina was skeptical about following him.
"They shall not hurt us anymore. Yes, I knew all of you. The Pevensies, Caspian, you. I asked someone to look out for you, visiting you from time to time." Aslan turned around and gave her a reassuring smile, "I can see now, he did a very good job."
He led her to a cave made of pure gold and diamonds, a cave that reflected all of the lights. It was the breath of Aslan that opened the gate to the cave. The cave itself was not dark like your usual cave, on the contrary, it was filled with brilliant light. She was almost blinded when she came in, and the lion followed. He seemed to absorb the light as He came in contact with it. Angelina closed her eyes unable to see in the cave, and Aslan put His paw on her eyes. When she opened her eyes she could see inside, as if she was allowed to see inside by some force inside of her.
"What is my purpose?" She turned around and asked the Lion.
Aslan sat down on his throne and looked at her, "so eager to find out, so passionate. Patience is key, child."
"I do not have time! I need to know now, to stop the war!" Angelina walked up closer to him, sitting down on one of the steps before Him.
"Why are you so hasty to stop the war, all come in due time." Aslan's eyes looked straight at hers, the eyes of a lion. He already knew the answers to all of the questions she would ask Him, but making her say them out loud would make her admit them to herself.
"I want to save king Edmund," Angelina confessed, fearing for Edmund's life.
"Ah," The lion breathed out, "I have not heard that name in a while. Edmund, the boy who's soul I died for." Aslan looked at a wall as if remembering exactly who Edmund was. "He was always one of my favorites you know, possessed the most human qualities. Only Edmund knows the price of betrayal." Aslan spoke calmly.
Angelina looked down at the ground. "What happened to Edmund?" She wanted to know the truth. He had always told her that he did something horrible before, but he never came around to telling her what exactly he had done.
"He betrayed his family, sided with the white witch. She claimed his soul, I claimed it back. Edmund is free now, he knows justice like no one else." Aslan remembered that day he died. He remembered many days after that, the way Edmund knew the powers of the witch and would do anything to stop them. On the pure golden wall of the cave appeared a life-like portrait of Edmund. He was wearing his crown and looking off into the distance as if on a battlefield. On his crown, she noticed some specific leaves.
"What do the leaves mean?" She asked Aslan, tracing her fingers around his crown.
Aslan walked up to her, "those are birch leaves, they symbolize redemption and a new beginning."
"He never told me that. Any of it." Angelina felt terrible that he had to hold his dark past in him.
"There was no need to. That is not who Edmund is. He is a king and an excellent swordsman. His sins do not define him when I washed them away." Aslan stood up from his throne and walked up closer to her. "I shall help you, Angelina, daughter of Eve. You shall be what you are meant to be." Aslan breathed on her again.
Aslan proceeded to explain to her that she is the keeper of His light. Only she has the power to hold it, for He gave her that power. Not yet understanding how that was possible, or how to control this light, she just patiently listened as the lion explained to her everything about Narnia, everything she had to know. Her powers were given to her before the time she was even born. Aslan knew exactly of the child that was going to be strong enough to bare everything that was going to come, He knew that only her mind can understand the war between good and evil. She was chosen by Him specifically, and that is why she never felt like she belonged anywhere. She was an outcast living in a world of people who had great destinies they were always denied.
"Of course, I cannot promise you that you won't stumble, the darkness is alluring, it is your choice to make. Choose good, Angelina, instead of evil." Aslan ended with this explanation.
"Then why give me this power, knowing I can choose the darkness?" Angelina asked, not understanding the Lion's logic.
"Because I have faith in you, child. I trust you will make the right decision, it is all up to you. You have to choose to fight the darkness in you, I cannot make that choice for you. Anyone can stumble, do bad, but you were made to be my warrior. Even the kings and queens of Narnia do bad, but it is because they are human, and your nature is attracted to darkness like no one else's, that is why I trust you; to make conscious choices." For a second she wished she had Aslan's confidence and trust in her.
"When will I fight?" Angelina looked up at him.
"You will fight with purity, my love. Patience, you have to wait for the right time to use this power given to you. I will teach you." Aslan walked up to a lake and looked into it. The lake was on the other side of the cave, a side that she had not yet been to, although the cave itself seemed endless.
It was strange that a lake flowed inside a cave, but then again, this was Narnia and things were strange here. This place shouldn't even exist, but it does. This changed her entire life and understanding of the world.
"Look at the waters, they flow with the most peaceful motion. One touch and the water that surrounds it goes mad like a million birds flying away from danger. So are you, like this river. Everything in life affects you personally and makes out the flow of future events, just like a river. There are many things to learn child, but the battle is already won." Aslan spoke in riddles that she didn't yet understand, not that she could, talking to a Lion was new to her, something she had never experienced.
"Now, go back to Cair Paravel, do not tell anyone you know of me or what I have told you. Come here tomorrow, your training starts now." The Lion led her out of the cave and before leaving Angelina tried to remember the way there.
"How does my training begin now? I am leaving." She stated.
"Patience child, you will understand." When she turned her head, the Lion and the cave both disappeared as if they weren't there, to begin with. Everything was happening so quickly, the second Edmund left she had discovered who Aslan was as if it was all falling into play, and she had to lose him to find herself. It was selfish to think of him as someone who was stopping her, but maybe he wasn't so much stopping her as his absence was pushing her. Everything that happened was necessary for this key moment to happen, and she understood that. Being in the Lion's presence changed the way she thought of things, she saw more of things now, understood more.
Being cautious in the woods, Angelina tried to not make any noises knowing that the trolls might come back. She made her way out of the woods safely, the castle was ahead of her and she breathed in the fresh air preparing herself for the huge walk she was going to take back to the castle. All the while she was contemplating everything Aslan had said to her. Her story was much bigger now, her duty much more important. Although she wanted to tell Peter, ask him for advice, she couldn't. She promised the Lion she would keep herself a secret.
